    Work resumes in Enugu as official activities picks up after Easter festivities

    Workers have resumed duty, while official activities have picked up in Enugu after the two days holidays to mark the Easter festivities.

    A visit at the Federal Secretariat,, Enugu, it was observed that some offices were opened with staff for the official business of the day.

    Mr Chimezie Nweke, a civil servant who simply identified himself as working under Federal Ministry of Health, said that it was worthwhile to resume work and attend to some un official businesses before the holidays.

    .

    “After the Easter holidays and rest; I am here to continue with official duties to Nigerians,” Nweke said.

    Another civil servant, Miss Chinelo Ugwu, who is with the Federal Fire Service, said though she was on standby duty during the holidays, it was gratifying to see the Federal Secretariat come alive again.

    A service provider, Mr Olu shola, who provides car wash services at the Federal Secretariat, said that business had picked up this morning, throughout the holidays it was “so dull here”.

    At the State Secretariat, some commissioners and even the Enugu State Head of Service, Dr Godwin Anigbo, had resumed duty and started official engagements as early as 8a.m..

    One of the civil servant, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said that the Easter break was good as she reconnected fully with close family members and friends.

    He said, “For now, we are back to work and we thank God for health and sound mind.

    “I wish to request the state government and head of service to look into providing civil servants with free transportation to ameliorate the current cost of transport to and fro the state Secretariat.”

    Another civil servant, who simply gave his name as Obi, said that he resumed at about 8a.m. and he is looking forward to a great working week ahead.

    Reacting, Dr Anigbo urged civil servants to be focused, resilient and passionate on their duties, which is formulation of government policies and its implementation to deliver the goods to the government and people of Enugu State.

    “I will enjoin workers to continue to be passionate and dedicated to their duties bearing in mind that their inputs in terms of service delivery and level of productivity keep government functions running,” he said.

    On the issue of transport cost, Anigbo said that the CNG buses rolled out by the state government remained a reasonable clean energy and far cheaper in fare charge compared to the usual commercial buses.

    “The state government is rolling out additional 100 CNG buses and taxi cabs very soon.

    “The state government has concluded plans to ensure workers welfare remain paramount with the initial N80,000 minimum wage being paid monthly.

    “Workers interest will be duly captured as the state government rolls out more CNG buses in due time,” he said.

    An Enugu-based philanthropist, Dr Ejikeme Odumegwu, has felicitated Christians on completion of 40 days fasting and subsequent Easter celebration that follows it.

    Odumegwu, who is the Executive Director of Owelle Ejikeme Odumegwu (OEO) Foundation, said this in an Easter Goodwill Message he issued on Saturday in Enugu.

    He called on residents of Enugu State especially the people of Nsukka to exemplify the spirit of unity and peace this Easter.

    Odumegwu, who holds the title of Owelle of Nsukka, also called on residents to ensure that they have their Permanent Voter Cards (PVC) to actively vote and support the re-election of the performing Gov. Peter Mbah.

     

    “As we celebrate and thank God for another Easter; we should not forget the major task ahead, which is re-election of our hardworking and innovative governor, Gov. Peter Mbah.

    “Mbah is currently envisioning a modern Enugu State for us and our children through massive infrastructural works as well as people-oriented programmes and initiatives,” he said.

    The philanthropist, whose foundation had awarded scholarship to scores of secondary and tertiary students, admonished residents to vote in frontline politicians who have penchant for modernity and development just like Mbah.

    MainPower confirms electrocution of staff

    The MainPower Electricity Distribution Limited (MEDL) has confirmed the electrocution of one of its staff, Mr Issac Dike, a linesman attached to its Ogui District.

    The Head of Communications, MEDL, Mr Emeka Ezeh, disclosed this in a statement issued on Friday.

    According to him, the incident occurred on Wednesday, April 1, at about 3:25p.m., while the deceased was carrying out a yet-to-be-established activity within a 300KVA/11KV/0.415KV distribution substation located on Giraffe Street, Ekulu East Estate (Zoo Estate), Enugu.

    Ezeh said that his lifeless body was subsequently brought down from the high-tension pole and taken to the Emergency Unit of the Enugu State University Teaching Hospital (ESUTH), Colliery, Enugu, where he was confirmed dead.

    The spokesman noted that the incident was reported at the Abakaliki Road Police Station, Enugu, and his remains were later deposited at the morgue.

    Ezeh said that a detailed investigation into the incident would be conducted.

    “However, preliminary findings revealed that the deceased had gone to the location with a driver assigned to his team, who claimed he was unaware of the specific work activity that took them to the estate.

    “The driver also said he was unaware of the identity of the customer who allegedly requested the service.

    “Further investigation indicated that the deceased did not inform any member of his team about his movement to Ekulu East Estate (popularly known as Zoo Estate) for any work-related activity.

    “Checks on the company’s fault report log and its Complaint Management System (CMS) showed no record of any complaint from customers in Ekulu East Estate prior to the incident,” he said.

    The spokesman added that there was also no record of any approved outage request for work to be carried out in the area on the day of the incident.

    “This suggest that the accident may have resulted from an unauthorised or illegal activity.

    “It is unfortunate that we lost him under such circumstances. Our hearts go out to his family, and we pray for the repose of his soul,” Ezeh said.

    The Commissioner of Police in Enugu State, CP Mamman Giwa, has presented cheques totaling N52.9 million to families of deceased police personnel, who paid the ultimate sacrifice on duty.

    Presenting the cheques to 10 deceased families on Thursday in Enugu, Giwa said that he was performing the presentation on behalf of the Inspector General of Police, Mr Olatunji Disu.

    The commissioner also said that the presentation was part of activities marking the National Police Day 2026 Celebration with the theme: “Community Partnership: Building Trust.”

    “I am making this presentation on behalf of the IGP, Mr Olatunji Disu, and urge you to make judicious use of the money by investing it on geninue and profitable business ventures.

    “Please, be wary of close friends and families that we meet you and want to trick you into fraudulent and quick return on investment businesses.

    “Invest wisely and if possible relax and pray over the money to be divinely guided on where to investment the money since another money will not be given to you tomorrow.

    “Remember, you have dependants, who will call for school fees and other fixed expenses,” he said.

    Responding on behalf of the beneficiaries, Rev. Charles Ugwuagu, Reagent of Oboji Enugwo Autonomous Community in Enugu State, said that “the beneficiaries are grateful for the gesture from the IGP and command”.

    Ugwuagu, whose brother is a deceased police officer, appreciated the command for working as a family and remembering the families of the deceased.

    “We thank the IGP, the commissioner and entire command for due diligence, which has made this gesture possible. Thank you all,” he said.

    It would be recalled that the National Police Day 2026 celebration started with a environmental sanitation, health outreach and interaction with members of the public on Monday.

    There was a walkathon on Tuesday and followed with talk on shunning electoral violence and ensuring road safety on Wednesday.

    The grand finale of the celebration will take place on April 7, at Eagle Square, Abuja, featuring a ceremonial parade and procession.

    The Commissioner of Police in Enugu State, Mr Mamman Giwa, has pledged to uphold human rights and dignity of residents in all policing activities and operations within the state.

     

    Giwa said this on Wednesday in Enugu when Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers, and the Police Public Relations Officer of command carried out sensitisation on vital civic duties and obligations.

     

     

    The sensitisation, which is part of activities lined up for the celebration of the National Police Day 2026, centred on residents shunning election violence and related offences, and safe driving and compliance with traffic regulations.

     

    The commissioner appreciated the residents of the state for their cooperation during sensitisations, campaigns and other activities marking the National Police Day.

     

     

    He reassured the residents of the command’s unwavering commitment to serving them better.

     

    “In all we do, the command will uphold residents’ rights and dignity,” he assured.

     

     

    The sensitisation and interactive sessions were held simultaneously across Area Command Headquarters, motor parks, and bus stops within various police divisions in the command.

     

    Activities marking the police day would continue on April 2, with the commissioner presenting cheques to families of deceased personnel of the Nigeria Police Force on behalf of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Disu.

    Easter: FRSC deploys 569 personnel, 10 vehicles for Special Patrol in Enugu

    The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has deployed 569 personnel for the Easter Special Patrol to ensure free flow of traffic within major roads in Enugu State.

    The Sector Commander of FRSC Enugu State Command, Mr Franklin Agbakoba, disclosed this to newsmen in Enugu on Wednesday.

     

    Agbakoba noted that the personnel included: 309 regular and 260 special marshals.

     

    The sector commander said that the FRSC had made ready 10 vehicles to cover major road corridors within the state.

     

     

    According to him, the operational vehicles deployed included: seven patrol vans, one motor-bike, one tow truck and one intensive care medical ambulance.

     

    He said that the operation would last for 10 days; thus from April 1 to April 10; while FRSC personnel would work 24 hours on shift basis.

     

    “One positive development in this Easter is that the other lane of Ugwu-Onyeama axis of Enugu-Onitsha Expressway will be opened officially for traffic today by the Minister of Works, Chief David Umahi.

     

    “We anticipate that the latest development, which will make the two lanes functional, will eradicate traffic build-up and check accident around that axis of the expressway,” he said.

     

     

    Agbakoba, however, urged travellers to plan their journeys on time, leave early, exercise patience on the road as well as accommodate other road users.

     

    He called on commercial bus drivers to desist from human and goods over load, adding that FRSC officials would not tolerate such.

     

    “Commercial and private drivers should refrain from alcohol or any intoxicant in take before embarking on any journey in order to arrive their destinations peacefully and not to cause accident for positive behaved road users.

     

    “Everybody using the road should be careful and take things easy. Everybody will surely get to his or her destination peacefully.

     

    “FRSC wishes the residents of Enugu State and all Nigerians a safe and secured Easter festivities, celebrated with all loved ones, families and friends,” he added.
