The cleric called on people living in various communities to support security agencies and the government in the fight against insecurity, adding: “They should stand up against banditry.”

According to him, Nigerians can do better by expose bad eggs and kidnappers through discreetly sharing information/intelligence about unscrupulous elements and revealing their hide-outs as most of these criminals are not strangers.

He said, “So the citizens should realise that, it is collective duty to secure, and protect lives in the society and everyone has a role to play.

I-G decries loss of personnel during duties, to increase deployment to Enugu

The Inspector-General of Police (I-G), Mr Olatunji Disu, has decried increasing number of police officers being killed in the line of duty, while battling insecurity across the country.

Disu said this in Enugu on Wednesday while addressing newsmen shortly after the commissioning of a state-of-the-art Forensic and Investigation Centre in Enugu built by the Enugu State Government.

The I-G said that police personnel had continued to make sacrifices in the fight against crime, insurgency and banditry, adding: “We are trying our best, and we are losing our men while doing it.”

Disu recalled the recent death of three officers of the Police Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Unit in Maiduguri, who were killed while attempting to detonate an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) planted by insurgents.

“They were dedicated officers who wanted to save lives. Unfortunately, they fell into the trap laid by the insurgents, and we lost them,” he said.

The police boss also assured Nigerians that security agencies had been working tirelessly to tackle insecurity across the country.

“We are not sleeping on our oars. We are working day and night. What we are doing may not be made public, but very soon Nigerians will hear good news,” he said.

On preparations for future elections, the I-G said that the police remained fully committed to ensuring peaceful, credible and violence-free polls.

According to him, as the lead agency in election security, we must continue to update our thinking, procedures and training especially going with changes as the new electoral act stipulates.

On the debate over state police, Disu disclosed that the Force had already developed a framework on the issue, which had been submitted to the Presidency and National Assembly for consideration.

He added that contributions from the police framework had featured prominently in ongoing discussions on policing reforms.

On manpower shortage, the I-G admitted that the Force was currently overstretched, adding: “We do not have enough personnel.”

He noted that President Bola Tinubu had approved the recruitment of 50,000 police personnel, noting that the process was already at the medical screening stage, while police training institutions were been refurbished ahead of the exercise.

“Plans are underway to recruit even more officers beyond the approved number,” he said.

Disu also pledged to increase police manpower in Enugu State following discussions with Gov. Peter Mbah, who recently procured additional operational vehicles for security agencies.

He said, “The governor has acquired a large number of vehicles, and we need personnel to deploy them.

“I have given him my assurance that we will increase manpower in Enugu to sustain the relative peace being enjoyed in the state.”

Speaking, the state Commissioner of Police, Mr Mamman Giwa, said that the state continued to enjoy a relatively stable security and remained one of the most peaceful states in the South-East and the country at large.

Giwa said that the command remained vigilant and proactive in addressing emerging and evolving security threats, including kidnapping, armed robbery, cult-related violence, farmer-herder conflicts, “one-chance” robberies, human trafficking, and other forms of organised crime.

“The Command has, therefore, sustained intelligence-led and coordinated operations aimed at identifying, disrupting, and dismantling criminal networks, while denying criminal elements the liberty to operate.

“These sustained operational efforts have yielded significant results, including the arrest and prosecution of criminal suspects, the recovery of firearms, ammunition, stolen vehicles and other exhibits, the dismantling of criminal camps and hideouts, and the rescue of victims of kidnapping and other violent crimes.

“To further strengthen public safety and public confidence, the Command has intensified visibility policing through strategic deployments, confidence-building patrols, targeted stop-and-search operations, and continuous operational assessments.

“We have also deepened community engagement, particularly in rural and vulnerable communities, to enhance intelligence gathering, strengthen partnerships with the public, and promote community participation in policing,” he said.

Recognising that contemporary security challenges require collective responses, the commissioner said that the command had institutionalised robust inter-agency collaboration with sister security and law enforcement agencies.

He said, “Furthermore, the establishment of the Distress Response Squad (DRS) and the Command-and-Control Centre by Gov. Peter Mbah, has significantly strengthened the state’s security architecture.”

    By Opeyemi Gbemiro
    Lokoja, June 15, 2026.

The Kogi Government will reclaim the state’s forests from criminal elements, Gov. Ahmed Ododo, has said.
Ododo made the declaration during a visit to the training camp of the newly recruited Forest Guard trainees on Sunday in Lokoja
”There will be no safe haven for terrorists, bandits and other violent criminals operating within the state.
”We are determined to rid Kogi of criminal elements and we will deploy all lawful resources necessary to guarantee the safety of residents and visitors,” he said.
The governor urged the guards to discharge their responsibilities with discipline, patriotism and a strong commitment to service.
”The vast and largely unguarded forest areas in some parts of the state has become a major security challenge, providing hideouts for criminal groups and enabling attacks on innocent citizens.
”The recruitment and training of Forest Guards form a key component of the state’s security strategy is aimed at strengthening surveillance, denying criminals access to safe havens and improving the capacity of security agencies to respond effectively to threats.” he said.
Ododo said that the initiative was part of the Forest Guard Programme approved by President Bola Tinubu and it is being implemented through the Office of the National Security Adviser in collaboration with the Department of State Services and other security institutions.
He commended Tinubu for his commitment to strengthening national security and empowering states with innovative measures to tackle emerging security challenges.
The governor also expressed appreciation to the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, for his support and leadership in advancing security reforms across the country.
Ododo further lauded the Director-General of the DSS, Adeola Ajayi, for supporting security operations in Kogi.
He noted that the DSS was overseeing the profiling and training of the Forest Guard recruits to ensure professionalism, competence and accountability.
The governor stressed that while his administration was committed to expanding security manpower, it remained focused on ensuring that only individuals of proven character, integrity and loyalty were entrusted with the responsibility of protecting lives and property.
He expressed confidence in the trainees, describing them as a valuable addition to the state’s security architecture and urged them to take their training seriously in preparation for the task ahead.
The visit to the training camp came a day after the governor inspected the first batch of Armoured Personnel Carriers procured by the state government to enhance the operational capacity and combat readiness of security agencies.
He reaffirmed that security remained a top priority of his administration and pledged sustained investment in personnel, equipment and intelligence-driven operations to make the state safer and more conducive for investment and development.
The governor assured residents that the government would continue to intensify efforts until all parts of the state were secured and citizens could pursue their lawful activities without fear.

Okechukwu calls for 3% federation account funding for state police

The former Director-General of the Voice of Nigeria (VON), Mr Osita Okechukwu, has called for three percent Federation Account funding for the proposed state police meant to stem spate of insecurity in the country.

Okechukwu, who is a foundation member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), advocated this in a statement he issued in Enugu on Sunday.

He commended the unprecedented consensus among Nigerians and bipartisan consensus on the urgent need for the establishment of state police as imperative response to contain the security mess nationwide.

The APC chieftain, however, warned that the success of state police would depend largely on the dedication of the three per cent funding mechanism to sustain our patriotism.

“Going through bill passed by House of Representatives: A Bill for an Act to Alter Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 to Provide for Establishment of State Police and for Related Matters (Sixth Alteration) Bill, 2026

“One couldn’t locate specific percentage to adequately fund state police.

“I, therefore, advocate that three per cent of the Federation Account should be dedicated specifically to the funding of state police.

“Without proper financial backing, the nation risks unleashing official toll collectors and police thugs on the populace,” he said.

Okechukwu noted that poor funding remained antithetical to modern gadgets and essential ingredient in asymmetrical warfare.

He said that the devolution of police powers and other synergy paradigm were not enough to address poor funding, which rendered Federal police prostrate.

According to him, the realities on the ground have made state police an unavoidable national necessity.

The APC chieftain noted that the creation of state police without a clearly defined funding framework in the Bill and synergy paradigm with other security agencies would amount to chasing shadows.

He cautioned that leaving the financing of state police entirely to the discretion of individual state governments might undermine the objective of the reform.

“Therefore, appropriate adjustment to the Federal Government’s share of the Federation Account, should accompany the Bill.

“Effective policing is the foundation of peace, economic development, growth of our democracy and citizens’ confidence in government.

“All stakeholders should support three per cent funding model that will make state police professional, accountable and sustainable,” he added.

Gen. Rabe: MACBAN calls for renewed national action against insecurity

    By Salisu Sani-Idris

Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN), has urged the Federal Government and security agencies to renew national security strategy against insecurity in the country.

The National President of MACBAN, Baba Othman-Ngelzarma, made the call in a statement on Sunday while reacting to the death of Maj.-Gen. Rabe Abubakar (rtd), in captivity.

Othman-Ngelzarma emphasised the need for security and law enforcement agencies to strengthen intelligence gathering, inter-agency collaboration and community-based security initiatives.

This, according to him, will enable them to dismantle criminal networks, rescue victims still in captivity and ensure that all perpetrators and their collaborators are swiftly brought to justice.

He stressed that the fight against banditry must remain a national priority, which requires unwavering commitment and collective resolve.

“MACBAN received with profound grief and deep sorrow the tragic news of the death of Maj. -Gen. Rabe Abubakar (rtd).

“Rabe lost his life following his abduction by armed bandits on May 30, while travelling with his wife from Kaduna state to Katsina.

“Our members nationwide extend heartfelt condolences to the immediate family of the late distinguished officer.

” The Government and good people of Katsina, his colleagues, the Nigerian military community, and the Government and people of the Federal Republic of Nigeria over this painful and irreparable loss.”

Othman-Ngelzarma said that the deceased served Nigeria with honour, courage and unwavering dedication throughout his military career, adding that his tragic demise under such distressing circumstances is a painful reminder that insecurity continues to threaten the lives of ordinary citizens.

He stressed the urgent need for intensified and sustained national action against criminal elements.

” MACBAN unequivocally and in the strongest possible terms condemns banditry, kidnapping and all forms of organised violent crime.

“These reprehensible acts have inflicted immeasurable suffering on communities across the country, devastated families, disrupted livelihoods and undermined national cohesion and economic progress.

“No grievance or circumstance can justify the senseless taking of human lives or the terrorisation of innocent citizens, ” he said.

Othman-Ngelzarma prayed for the safe recovery and wellbeing of the late Gen. Rabe’s wife and all other victims who may still be in captivity.

He expressed solidarity with every Nigerian family affected by the scourge of insecurity.

“May the Almighty Allah (SWT), in His infinite mercy, forgive the shortcomings of Maj.-Gen.Rabe, expand and illuminate his grave, admit him into Al-Jannatul Firdaus and grant his family, friends, military colleagues and the entire nation the fortitude to bear this profound loss.” (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

  • Insecurity thrives where local governments are weak – Defence manufacturer

Insecurity thrives where local governments are weak – Defence manufacturer

    By Sumaila Ogbaje

    Abuja, June 14, 2026.

The Chairman/CEO of Equipment & Protective Applications International Limited (EPAIL Nigeria), Mr Kola Balogun, says weak local government administration remains one of the major factors fueling insecurity and insurgency across Nigeria.

Balogun stated this during the Nigerian People’s Strategic Conference and Defence Exhibition 2026 in Abuja, where he highlighted the importance of grassroots governance in addressing security challenges.

According to him, insecurity often thrives in areas where citizens have little or no visible presence of government institutions and services.

“One of the root causes of insecurity and insurgency is the disconnect between governance and the grassroots.

“In many local government areas, citizens have little or no visible presence of government. Where government presence is weak, insecurity finds fertile ground,” he said.

Balogun said strengthening local government administration would help address poverty, unemployment and other socio-economic conditions that often create opportunities for criminality.

He noted that effective governance at the grassroots level could improve citizens’ confidence in government and contribute significantly to national security and development.

“Strengthening local government administration is therefore critical to addressing insecurity.

“Effective governance at the grassroots level can help reduce poverty, create opportunities and improve citizens’ confidence in the state,” he said.

The EPAIL chairman urged governments at all levels to continue exploring ways of improving local governance and promoting competent leadership in local councils.

He stressed that strong local government institutions remained essential for sustainable peace, security and economic development.

“I believe we must continue to explore ways of improving local governance and encouraging competent leadership at the grassroots.

“Strong local government institutions are essential to national security and development,” he said.

Balogun also advocated a greater role for local governments in supporting community security initiatives through the procurement of locally manufactured security equipment.

According to him, such measures will not only improve security at the community level but also stimulate indigenous manufacturing and economic growth.

“In addition, local governments can play a major role in supporting community security initiatives by procuring locally produced protective equipment and other security-related tools.

“Such actions would not only enhance security but also stimulate local manufacturing and economic growth,” he said.

Balogun called for stronger collaboration between government and the private sector to build a self-reliant defence industry capable of meeting Nigeria’s security needs.

The conference has as its theme “Building a Modern Security Ecosystem: Integrating Private Sector Capacity into Nigeria’s National Security Architecture”.

It brought together top government and military officials, defence industries players, private security operators and youths from across the country to proffer solutions to the nation’s security challenges.

‎Two Suspected Kidnappers Nabbed as Iru Ekun Rescues Abductees in Osun Forest

    ‎By Adewale Owoade

‎Operatives of the Iru Ekun Security Network, founded by Chief Sunday Adeyemo Igboho, have apprehended two suspected kidnappers during a coordinated operation in Ora-Igbomina, Osun State.

‎The operation, carried out on Wednesday, June 10, 2026, also led to the rescue of two abducted persons, while efforts are ongoing to locate and rescue a third victim.

‎The intervention followed intelligence received on Tuesday, June 9, indicating that three residents of the community had been abducted by armed men and taken into a nearby forest.

‎Acting on the information, the Iru Ekun rapid response team mobilised immediately and launched a bush-combing operation in line with its mandate of securing communities and protecting lives.

‎According to the team’s leadership, the suspects confessed during preliminary interrogation that they were nationals of the Republic of Niger.

‎The suspects reportedly admitted to abducting the three victims and leading them into the forest on June 9.

‎During an encounter with Iru Ekun operatives, the suspects were overpowered and arrested after allegedly attempting to resist capture. The operatives subsequently rescued two of the victims, who were found unharmed.

‎A search-and-rescue operation remains ongoing to locate the third victim and ensure his safe return.

‎In compliance with established legal procedures and security protocols, the suspects were handed over to officers of the Nigeria Police Force at the Oke-Ila Division in Osun State on June 10 for further investigation and possible prosecution.

‎The Iru Ekun Security Network stressed that its operations are designed to complement the constitutional responsibilities of the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies.

‎Chief Sunday Adeyemo Igboho commended the discipline and professionalism displayed by the operatives during the operation.

‎He reiterated that the security outfit was established to support government efforts through intelligence gathering, early warning mechanisms, and rapid response services, particularly in rural communities where difficult terrain and long distances often hinder timely intervention by conventional security agencies.

‎”Our duty is prevention and protection, not confrontation. Iru Ekun exists to bridge the security gap at the grassroots, operate within the law, and ensure that our people can farm, travel and sleep without fear,” Adeyemo said.

‎He also called on traditional rulers, community leaders and residents across Osun and neighbouring states to remain vigilant, provide timely information to security agencies and support efforts aimed at preventing criminal activities, especially in border communities.

‎The incident in Ora-Igbomina highlights the growing security concerns in parts of the country, where criminal gangs have increasingly exploited forested areas and remote routes for kidnapping operations.

‎Iru Ekun assured members of the public that the ongoing rescue effort is being conducted with professionalism and caution to ensure the safety of the remaining victim.

‎The outfit pledged to provide further updates as the operation progresses.
