Military Uncovers Foreigners Among ISWAP Bandits Terrorising Nigeria

The Nigerian Military says preliminary forensic analysis has uncovered the involvement of a Moroccan and a Palestinian among foreign operatives fighting alongside the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) in the country.

The military said the discovery followed a failed ISWAP attack on troops of Operation HADIN KAI in Cross Kauwa, Kukawa LGA of Borno state.

Troops of 19 Brigade, Sector 3, Joint Task Force North East, Operation HADIN KAI, repelled an attempted infiltration of their location in Cross Kauwa on Friday night, inflicting what the military described as heavy casualties on the attackers.

The military said the terrorists attempted to loot cholera medical supplies, reinforcing intelligence reports of a cholera outbreak within ISWAP enclaves.

In a statement on Sunday, Captain Mohammed Goni, spokesman of Operation HADIN KAI, said a terrorist cameraman was neutralised during the encounter. He added that troops recovered a Sony camcorder containing operational footage and propaganda materials.

According to the military, preliminary forensic analysis of the recordings indicated that the failed attack was coordinated by four senior ISWAP commanders alongside three foreign terrorist facilitators.

The military identified one of the operatives as Abu Ishaq, described as a Palestinian and assessed to be ISWAP’s overall trainer. It also identified Abu Thaiba, described as a Moroccan medical doctor serving within the terrorist network. The military said the identity of a third Arab operative is yet to be established.

“The presence and active involvement of these foreign nationals further reinforces intelligence assessments that ISWAP continues to benefit from external support, specialist expertise and transnational terrorist linkages,” the statement reads.

The military said troops recovered the Sony camcorder, PKT ammunition, 7.62mm special rounds, terrorist uniforms and other combat items during exploitation operations.

It said satellite imagery and human intelligence indicated that the insurgents evacuated the bodies of some of their fighters after the failed attack, while several others sustained gunshot wounds.

The military added that two soldiers were injured during the exchange of fire and were evacuated by air for advanced medical treatment. It said both personnel are in stable condition.

The military said the failed infiltration represented another operational setback for ISWAP and reaffirmed its commitment to sustaining offensive operations against terrorist groups across the north-east.

Speaking at the passing-out parade of the recruits, Shaibu said the graduates represented a significant addition to the Nigerian Army’s manpower, in line with the Federal Government’s efforts to strengthen national defence and address the country’s prevailing security challenges.

He said the recruits had undergone rigorous military training designed to prepare them for the realities of modern warfare and Nigeria’s evolving security environment.

The COAS urged the soldiers to remain vigilant, disciplined and mission-focused, stressing that their loyalty to the Constitution and constituted authority must remain unwavering.

According to him, the nation has invested heavily in their training and expects them to justify that confidence through courage, professionalism and selfless service.

Shaibu described the establishment of the Depot Nigerian Army, Amasiri-Edda, as a strategic investment in the Nigerian Army’s training infrastructure and manpower development.

He said the facility was part of ongoing efforts to expand the Army’s force generation capacity, noting that the graduation followed similar recruit pass-out parades recently conducted at the Depot Nigerian Army, Zaria, and the newly established training depot in Osogbo, Osun State.

The Army chief commended the Commandant, instructors and support staff of the depot for their commitment to producing competent and combat-ready soldiers capable of supporting ongoing military operations across the country.

In his remarks, the Governor of Ebonyi State, Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru, commended the Nigerian Army for establishing the training depot in the state.

He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to sustaining collaboration with the Armed Forces and other security agencies to promote peace, stability and development.

NADCEL 2026: COAS Says Technology, Intelligence Key to Defeating Nigeria’s Evolving Security Threats

The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt.-Gen. Waidi Shaibu, has said the Nigerian Army is intensifying investments in technology, intelligence capabilities and modern combat equipment as part of efforts to strengthen its capacity to confront the country’s increasingly complex security challenges.

Speaking at the grand finale of the Nigerian Army Day Celebration (NADCEL) 2026 in Port Harcourt on Monday, the Army Chief said the changing nature of security threats demands a military that is not only professionally trained but also equipped with modern technologies capable of responding effectively to contemporary warfare.

He noted that the Nigerian Army has continued to adapt to emerging threats by modernising its operational capabilities while improving collaboration with other security agencies.

According to him, the Army has recorded significant successes against insurgents, terrorists, bandits and other armed groups through sustained operational pressure, enhanced intelligence gathering and the deployment of modern military assets.

Shaibu explained that investments in intelligence and technology have become central to the Army’s operational strategy, enabling troops to identify threats more accurately, respond faster and conduct operations with greater precision.

He said the service would continue to acquire and effectively deploy modern combat equipment and force enablers to enhance battlefield effectiveness and improve the safety of personnel during operations.

The COAS said the Army’s modernisation drive extends beyond the acquisition of equipment to include improved training programmes designed to ensure that officers and soldiers are able to effectively operate sophisticated military platforms and adapt to evolving security environments.

He stressed that the Army remains committed to maximising the operational value of recently procured assets by ensuring they are efficiently integrated into ongoing counter-insurgency, counter-terrorism and internal security operations across the country.

The Army Chief also highlighted the importance of intelligence-driven operations, noting that the increasing complexity of terrorism and other forms of organised violence requires timely intelligence, inter-agency cooperation and the application of advanced technologies.

He said the Nigerian Army would continue to deepen collaboration with the Nigerian Navy, the Nigerian Air Force and other security agencies to improve information sharing and coordinate joint operations against criminal and terrorist groups.

Shaibu observed that modern warfare is increasingly shaped by innovation, intelligence fusion and rapid decision-making, making technology an indispensable component of military success.

He added that while equipment and technology are vital, they must be complemented by professionalism, discipline and adherence to ethical standards.

The COAS reaffirmed the Army’s commitment to transforming itself into a more professional, adaptable, combat-ready and resilient force capable of effectively discharging its constitutional responsibilities within a joint and multi-agency operational environment.

He also appealed for continued public support, stressing that meaningful security outcomes require cooperation between the military and citizens, particularly through the provision of credible and timely intelligence.

According to him, the Army’s investments in technology, intelligence and human capacity development are intended not only to improve operational performance but also to ensure the protection of lives, territorial integrity and national stability in the face of evolving security threats.

An advocacy group, the Social Advocacy Forum (SAF), has commended the Federal Government and Nigeria’s security agencies for their sustained efforts and sacrifices in protecting lives and property across the country.

In a statement issued by its Chairman, Alhaji Tahir Ibrahim Tahir and Secretary Hon. Shehu Atta, the group noted that the increasing collaboration among local security operatives, hybrid Forces under the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA), the Department of State Services (DSS), and the Armed Forces has continued to produce significant results in recent weeks.

According to the group, the gains recorded underscore the importance of maintaining intelligence-led operations and enhancing inter-agency coordination.

“Among them was the June 20, 2026, clearance operation conducted under Operation Hadin Kai, which led to the rescue of 47 women and children who had been held captive by ISWAP terrorists in Kangarwa, Borno State. The operation followed sustained ground and air offensives that compelled the insurgents to abandon their positions,” it said.

The group also noted that combined military operations in the North-West led to the elimination of notorious bandit leaders and another terrorist commander, Sani Wala Burki.

“In Zamfara State, the Multinational Joint Task Force, supported by newly acquired Nigerian Air Force fighter aircraft, dismantled several terrorist enclaves and neutralised numerous bandits.

Similarly, in Kogi State, coordinated operations involving federal security forces and local vigilante groups targeted armed kidnapping syndicates operating within the state.

“We are aware that the operations resulted in the elimination of more than 150 suspected criminals, including identified kingpins Kachalla Battijo and Ibrahim Bastuji, following intense exchanges of gunfire.

“Security agencies also acted on credible intelligence regarding the movement of illegal arms, leading to the arrest of suspects and the seizure of a vehicle used to transport the weapons in Kabba, Kogi State,” the statement added.

The Forum observed that security forces have continued to record successes across several parts of the country and urged Nigerians to complement the efforts of security agencies by remaining vigilant and providing credible intelligence when necessary.

SAF further commended the recent launch of the Nigeria Police Force’s “Handshake Patrol,” which covers strategic routes linking the North-West and South-West regions.

The initiative, according to the group, represents a significant step towards strengthening inter-state security cooperation and restricting the movement of fleeing criminal elements.

The group also expressed concern over what it described as indications that the ongoing political season may be contributing to the recent rise in security challenges in parts of the country. It therefore advocated greater synergy among relevant security institutions and called for a comprehensive and coordinated strategy aimed at addressing emerging threats before they escalate.

While acknowledging the progress made by security agencies, SAF emphasised the need for sustained operations, improved intelligence gathering, and stronger collaboration among stakeholders as essential elements in the effort to consolidate recent gains and enhance national security.
