60 Former UK Ambassadors Warm of Israel’s West Bank Annexation Moves

A group of former British diplomats has called on the UK and its allies to take stronger action against Israeli settlement expansion in the occupied West Bank, warning that current policies risk enabling annexation and undermining international law.

In a letter published in the Financial Times on Friday, more than 80 former diplomats – including 60 ambassadors, high commissioners and senior officials – said Israel’s expansionist activity and policies in the occupied Palestinian territories amounted to “accelerating annexation.”

“America is indeed falling out of love with Israel. So is Europe. While the world watches Iran and Lebanon, Israel extends control over the West Bank and Gaza. Its accelerating annexation is unmistakable,” the letter said.

They argued that Israel is in breach of both the EU-Israel Association Agreement and the UK-Israel Trade and Partnership Agreement, which require respect for human rights and democratic principles.

“Israel is in breach of both agreements,” the letter said, citing expanding occupier placements, discrimination against Palestinians and what it described as “systematic state-supported settler violence.”

The signatories called for the EU to suspend its association agreement with Israel, ban trade with settlements, halt arms transfers and restrict Israel’s participation in EU programs. They also urged the UK to ban all trade with settlements and review its agreements with Israel.

“Israel’s settlements project aims to kill the viability of the Palestinian state – Gaza, East Jerusalem and the rest of the West Bank – which Britain recognized in September 2025. That aim needs to fail, for the sake of long-term stability and a just peace.”

The diplomats warned that continued occupier settlement construction, including planned projects in the E1 area of the West Bank, could further undermine the viability of a future Palestinian state.

“Mere words of condemnation are ignored. While the world is distracted, grave contraventions of international law continue in occupied Palestine. We have drawn the EU letter to foreign secretary Yvette Cooper’s attention. Government action is now needed,” the letter added.

The Jewish leader of the United Kingdom’s Green Party has called on the government to sever trade and diplomatic ties with Israel in response to Israeli strikes on Lebanon.

Zack Polanski made the comments during the first minutes of a speech on Thursday that launched the Green Party’s local election campaign in London. Polanski, who has led his left-populist party to major wins since taking over in September, hopes the Greens will benefit from protest votes against the Labour government in local elections on May 7.

“It is outrageous that Israel are still enjoying diplomatic and trade privileges from the international community, and as a Green Party, we are calling on this government to make much more robust sanctions, to withdraw the UK-Israel trade agreement, and to end the genocide,” said Polanski.

Israeli airstrikes on Lebanon killed over 250 people on Wednesday, marking the deadliest day of the war between Israel and Hezbollah, an Iranian proxy, and threatening the fragile ceasefire between the United States and Iran. The Israeli army is fighting across southern Lebanon, and government officials have signaled that it plans to occupy the area.

Polanski also said the United Kingdom should block the U.S. military from using U.K. airspace to ensure the U.K. has no involvement in strikes on Iran.

“We still have U.K. soil and U.K. bases where U.S. bombers are flying over to Iran,” he said. “What we need to do is disentangle the U.K. military and the U.S. military, ban the U.S. from using our airspaces.”

In a statement on Thursday, Polanski added that the British government “must suspend diplomatic ties and stop all arms sales to this increasingly rogue state.” He accused Prime Minister Keir Starmer of being “too cowardly and complicit to condemn Israeli atrocities.”

Polanski has said that he grew up in a “Zionist household” and attended King David, a Jewish school in Manchester. He said in an interview with the BBC that his views on Israel began to shift after he encountered Breaking the Silence, a group of Israeli veterans who say they are morally obligated to recount their experiences of military control over Palestinians. Polanski also said that the war in Gaza solidified his staunch criticism of Israel.

Polanski is a member of Na’amod, an organization of British Jews who say they seek “to end our community’s support for Israel’s occupation and apartheid, and to mobilise it in the struggle for freedom, equality and justice for all Palestinians and Israelis.”

Earlier this year, Polanski gave qualified support to a Green Party motion called “Zionism is racism,” saying he would back the resolution if its definition of “Zionism” was linked to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government and its actions in Gaza.

The Jewish Greens, a subgroup within the party, urged their colleagues to vote against the motion. “This is not your run-of-the-mill motion opposing Israel’s actions (something that Jewish Greens would have no problem with), but something much more problematic that is likely to make Jews feel unwelcome in the Green Party,” the group said.

The British outlet Jewish News reported that some of Polanski’s family members, including his mother, have expressed support for Israel on social media.

The “Zionism is racism” motion failed to pass in March after internal disputes, though it remains on the table for a later vote.

Polanski frequently speaks about his pride in being Jewish and says that pride led to his support for Palestinians. In a TikTok video last year, he said that being Jewish to him meant “standing against injustice” and “remembering our history.”

“When I speak out for Palestinians, I don’t do it in spite of my Judaism,” said Polanski. “I do it because of it. Because ‘never again’ for one group of people must actually mean ‘never again’ for anyone.”

Defense Shield Shattered: Iranian Ballistic Missile Slams Into Tel Aviv As Israel’s Iron Dome Crumbles

TEL AVIV – In a catastrophic failure of the world’s most advanced air defense network, an Iranian ballistic missile has completely bypassed Israel’s multi-layered shield, slamming into the heart of central Tel Aviv and leaving a trail of “massive craters” and shattered buildings.

Al Jazeera confirmed the direct hit on Thursday, April 2, 2026, marking a terrifying turning point in the five-week-old conflict. The strike, which hit a densely populated residential area, has sent shockwaves through the region as the myth of the “impenetrable” Zionist defense shield appears to have finally collapsed.

The Strike that Broke the Shield
Initial reports from the ground describe scenes of absolute chaos. The missile, reportedly carrying a heavy explosive warhead, carved a massive crater into the asphalt, leveling several structures and incinerating vehicles parked nearby. The blast was so powerful that it shattered windows for several blocks, sending glass rain down on residents who were scrambling for bomb shelters.

“The Zionist defense shield has completely collapsed,” noted one regional correspondent. “This wasn’t just a stray shrapnel hit; this was a direct, unhindered strike on the heart of the city. The systems simply did not see it coming.”

    A High-Tech Failure
The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) are currently facing a crisis of confidence as they scramble to investigate why the Arrow 3 and Iron Dome systems failed to intercept the projectile. Military analysts suggest that Iran has successfully transitioned to using advanced cluster warheads and “stealth” flight paths that are overwhelming the IDF’s tracking sensors.

This hit in Tel Aviv follows similar defense failures in Petah Tikva earlier this week, where Iranian missiles also bypassed Israeli defenses, causing significant structural damage. For the first time since the start of the hostilities, the IAF is admitting that its multi-billion dollar defense umbrella is no longer a guarantee of safety.

    Regional Fallout
The successful strike on Tel Aviv has shifted the psychological balance of the war. As Israel reels from the direct hit on its commercial capital, Iran has signaled that this is only the beginning of a “new phase” of precision strikes. The IDF has responded with a wave of retaliatory sorties, but with the “Iron Dome” now proven vulnerable, the fear of an unrestricted ballistic exchange is higher than ever.

    Politics

As of Friday morning, emergency crews are still working to secure the blast site in central Tel Aviv. While casualties were initially reported to be between four and five injured, the sheer scale of the building damage suggests the toll could rise as search-and-rescue teams dig through the rubble of the high-tech shield’s failure.

Five more people were killed overnight by Iranian missiles aimed at Israel: a man from Thailand in the country’s center, and four Palestinian women who had been preparing to break the Ramadan fast in their West Bank village. One was six months pregnant.

The deaths come as Iran has increasingly turned to cluster munitions, which break apart and shed smaller bombs along their path — making them much harder for Israel’s air defense systems to intercept.

Shrapnel from interceptions also fell at Ben Gurion Airport in recent days, damaging private planes and causing the airport authority to extend the cancelation of regular flights and limits on the number of people who can travel on “rescue flights” meant to allow travelers to leave and Israelis abroad to return. Several foreign carriers, including Delta and United, announced the cancellation of flights to and from Israel until at least June.

Nearly three weeks of fighting, launched jointly by the United States and Israel against Iran, have thrown the Middle East into turmoil and shocked the global economy. Under pressure over rising gas prices, U.S. President Donald Trump distanced himself early Thursday from an Israeli attack on an Iranian oil field, but in a post on Truth Social, he reserved the right to attack the site himself if Iran continued to target energy infrastructure elsewhere in the Middle East.

The developments come as questions mount about how long Israel can continue to intercept Iran’s ballistic missiles. Semafor reported this week that U.S. officials believe the Israelis are running low on interceptors, but Israeli authorities tamped down those concerns on Wednesday. A combination of increased use of cluster munitions and a shortage of interceptors would put Israelis at increased risk.

TEL AVIV, Israel (AP) /— When sirens and cellphone alerts blare warnings of missiles incoming from Iran, people in Israel stream into shelters, turning parking garages, metro stations and basements into temporary communities.

These images show how surreal the scenes can become when life is interrupted at any moment day or night, and how, after constant waves of conflict, Israelis have found ways to quickly adapt, snatching a few moments of relief even as tensions rise.

Inside one shelter, a bride-to-be poses with her family, continuing the wedding photo shoot they’d been doing above ground. Their big dresses take up much of the dark, cramped space. During the Jewish holiday of Purim, revelers in costumes — a Shrek, a horror-film nurse splattered with fake blood — crowd into an underground station, almost dreamlike against the gray walls.

For many Israelis, heading to shelters is a familiar response shaped by past wars. Israel has an extensive system of private safe rooms and public shelters, unlike other nations across the region, including Iran and Lebanon, where residents are also seeking shelter from strikes. While the occupied West Bank is not being directly targeted, missiles can pass above the territory that has little access to shelters, and four Palestinian women were recently killed.

When warnings around Israel blare, shelters swell with people for 15 minutes, half an hour, however long the alert lasts.

Some have moved completely underground because they don’t have access to shelters in poorer neighborhoods or have mobility issues.

Under Tel Aviv’s decrepit bus station, dozens of families have moved full-time into tents. Many are Filipino and Eritrean migrants from the surrounding area, Tel Aviv’s most decrepit, which lacks sufficient shelters. They go home for a few hours every day to cook and bring it back to share with others, creating an impromptu soup kitchen with ice coolers, microwaves and Tupperwares of food.

Israel’s hospitals quickly instituted their underground emergency procedures on the first day of the war with Iran. At Sheba Medical Center, a staffer blows bubbles to entertain a young patient in a makeshift ward set up on a parking level.

In the cavernous parking lot under Tel Aviv’s Dizengoff Center mall, each day brings new, incongruous moments as thousands crowd within the echoing, concrete walls and pillars, where in normal times mallgoers wander in search of their cars.

One corner becomes an impromptu prayer hall, where a circle of men in shawls bow their heads among the shadows. In another section, kids watch TV at a children’s play zone.

The photos give a look at daily life transplanted into sometimes claustrophobic spaces – down to the pets. A dog lies across the lap of a sleeping man. Another waits patiently in the darkness as people sit worried, bored, impatient, under a shelter’s neon light and the glow of a mobile phone.

Netherlands says Starvation, Aid Obstruction key in Proving Genocidal Intent in Gaza

    – Dutch ICJ intervention highlights role of acts against children in determining genocidal intent

    Selma Aksunger

    THE HAGUE

The Netherlands, in its intervention submission to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in the genocide case filed by South Africa against Israel, stated that starvation and the deliberate obstruction of humanitarian aid may play an important role in determining genocidal intent.

The Netherlands, which intervened in the ongoing genocide case at the ICJ, presented its views on the interpretation of acts of genocide and the determination of genocidal intent in the submission it filed on March 12.

The Netherlands said that acts of genocide could take the form of starvation and the deliberate withholding of humanitarian aid and that these could play a significant role in determining genocidal intent.

The country stated in its submission that, considering the prohibition of genocide as a peremptory norm of international law (jus cogens) and the obligations under the Genocide Convention as erga omnes partes, all states have a common interest in ensuring the realization of the Convention’s objectives.

Referring to the ICJ’s statement in its first provisional measures decision in the case regarding the interests of all states parties to the Genocide Convention, the Netherlands said that its intervention concerns the interpretation, application, and implementation of the Convention.

Forced displacement may constitute an act of genocide

The Netherlands stated that forced displacement, depending on the facts, may correspond to or lead to one of the underlying acts of genocide and may play an important role in determining specific intent.

It argued that forced displacement may lead to one of the underlying acts listed in Articles 2(b) and 2(c) of the Genocide Convention and may also constitute evidence of specific genocidal intent.

It stated that forced displacement may cause or contribute to serious bodily or mental harm prohibited under Article 2(b) of the Convention and may also correspond to or lead to the creation of conditions of life calculated to bring about the physical destruction of a group under Article 2(c).

The Netherlands emphasized that forced displacement may not only lead to or correspond to underlying acts of genocide but may also serve as evidence of specific genocidal intent.

Acts against children should be assessed differently

The Netherlands stated that acts committed against children should be assessed differently and that such acts may play an important role in determining specific genocidal intent.

The Netherlands presented its view that, in light of children’s specific needs and vulnerabilities, a lower threshold should apply when assessing “serious bodily or mental harm” under Article 2(b) of the Genocide Convention when the victim is a child.

The Netherlands noted that conditions of life calculated to bring about the physical destruction of a group under Article 2(c) should be assessed in light of children’s specific needs and vulnerabilities and argued that the effects of forced displacement on children, under certain conditions, may correspond to an act of genocide.

The Netherlands also presented its views on determining specific intent, stating that when interpreting the requirements under Article 2 of the Genocide Convention, the court may consider the targeting of children, including killing, in several ways.

The Netherlands emphasized that the targeting of children may serve as evidence of genocidal intent and is relevant to determining specific intent and interpreting what constitutes the destruction of a group in whole or in part.

Starvation and obstruction of aid may constitute acts of genocide

The Netherlands stated that starvation and the deliberate withholding of humanitarian aid may constitute underlying acts of genocide and may play an important role in determining genocidal intent.

The Netherlands argued that, under Article 2(c) of the Genocide Convention, acts that create conditions of life calculated to bring about the physical destruction of a group are not limited to methods that cause immediate death.

The Netherlands noted that such acts must be calculated to lead to the eventual physical destruction of the group and that this does not require actual physical destruction to occur, but rather that the conditions are calculated to result in such destruction.

The Netherlands argued that, when interpreting the requirements of specific intent under Article 2 of the Convention, the court should consider starvation and the deliberate withholding of humanitarian aid, particularly when carried out based on a coordinated plan or a consistent pattern of conduct.

The Netherlands also stated that the obligation to prevent genocide is a due diligence obligation and therefore a duty of conduct.

Alongside the Netherlands, Colombia, Libya, Mexico, Palestine, Spain, Türkiye, Chile, Maldives, Bolivia, Ireland, Cuba, Belize, Brazil, Comoros, Belgium, Paraguay, Norway, Iceland, Namibia, the US, Hungary, and Fiji have also submitted declarations of intervention in the case against Israel.

While many countries’ interventions align with South Africa’s claims, the submissions of Paraguay, the US, Hungary, and Fiji partially reflect arguments similar to those presented by Israel.

Germany, France, UK, Canada did not intervene

Similar arguments to those put forward by the Netherlands had also been defended in a joint intervention submission by Canada, Denmark, France, Germany, the Netherlands, and the UK in the case filed by The Gambia against Myanmar regarding allegations of genocide against Rohingya Muslims.

However, among these six countries, only the Netherlands intervened in South Africa’s genocide case, while Germany, Canada, France, the UK, and Denmark refrained from intervening, leading to comments on double standards and inconsistency.

The Israel Information and Documentation Center (CIDI), a pro-Israel lobby organization in the Netherlands, objected to the country’s intervention submission.

In a statement on social media, the CIDI said the intervention shows that the Netherlands has not distanced itself from South Africa and described this as highly concerning, adding that the Netherlands does not distance itself from South Africa’s attempts to broaden the definition.

The CIDI also argued that, although the Dutch government is not obliged to consult parliament on such a decision, it would have been more appropriate to do so.

South Africa’s genocide case against Israel at ICJ

The Republic of South Africa filed a case at the ICJ on Dec. 29, 2023, alleging that Israel violated the 1948 UN Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide.

South Africa requested provisional measures from the court due to the urgency of the humanitarian situation in Gaza.

The court issued three separate provisional measures decisions on Jan. 26, March 28, and May 24, 2024.

In these decisions, Israel was requested to take all necessary measures to prevent acts defined under Article 2 of the Genocide Convention, ensure that its military does not commit such acts, immediately implement measures to prevent genocide, particularly halt military operations in Rafah that may create a risk of genocide, and regularly report to the court on the measures taken.

Israel Deputy Attorney General Gilad Noam stated in a post on US social media company X that Israel had declared in its defense submission to the ICJ on March 12 that South Africa’s allegations are completely baseless and defamatory.

Noam said that Israel remains committed to its obligations under the Genocide Convention and that any claims to the contrary aim to undermine the right and obligation of states to defend themselves against terrorist armed groups determined to destroy them.

In a statement signed by South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, it was noted that South Africa will assess Israel’s response and decide whether to request permission from the court to submit additional written statements or proceed directly to the oral phase.

The statement added that despite the ceasefire dated Oct. 10, 2025, and three binding ICJ decisions ordering Israel to prevent acts of genocide and ensure the immediate and unhindered provision of essential services and humanitarian aid, Israeli attacks, casualties, and severe living conditions in Gaza continue.

MURIC Blasts Israeli Ambassador, Accuses Him of Terrorism Lie Against Iran

    –  “Israelis have no moral right to accuse any nation of terrorism .The whole world knows that aggression is in Israel’s DNA and terrorism is a state dogma. Israel flaunts state assassinations and revels in seas of blood. Arrogance, impunity and international criminality are the values and norms that Israel promotes. – MURIC

    By Iyiola Olalere

‎‎Lagos:  A rights group, the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has accused the ambassador of Israel to Nigeria of somnambulism. This was sequel to the ambassador’s allegation that Iran was behind terrorism in Nigeria.

The group warned the ambassador to keep his tales by moonlight to the fairy angels in Tel Aviv and Washington.

‎‎MURIC’s comment was made in a statement circulated on Monday, 9th March, 2026 by its Executive Director, Professor Ishaq Akintola.

    ‎‎He added the details below:

‎‎”Israel’s ambassador to Nigeria, Michael Freeman, on Friday, 6th March, 2026 accused Iran of being behind terrorism in Nigeria (https://www-vanguardngr-com.cdn.ampproject.org/v/s/www.vanguardngr.com/2026/03/iran-behind-terrorism-in-nigeria/amp/).

‎‎”We reject Israel’s allegation totally, completely and categorically. This allegation is baseless, audacious and fallacious. Israel’s ambassador to Nigeria must have been somnambulating at the time he made the allegation.

‎‎”This is kettle calling pot black. Now we know sleep-walkers do not see clearly.  Who is the terrorist between Israel and Iran? Who is the champion of state terrorism in the whole world?

”Who surrounded Gaza, denying the legitimate citizens food and water? Who has been engaging in targeted killing of Palestinian activists? Who assassinated Hamas leaders assembled for peaceful negotiations?

‎‎”Israelis have no moral right to accuse any nation of terrorism .The whole world knows that aggression is in Israel’s DNA and terrorism is a state dogma. Israel flaunts state assassinations and revels in seas of blood. Arrogance, impunity and international criminality are the values and norms that Israel promotes.

“As at March 6th, 2026, at least 75,227 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza since the 7th October invasion. Who killed them? 21,283 of these are children. More than 25,000 are women! 248 journalists are among those killed. 120 are university lecturers. Just a few days ago, Israel killed 165 girls in an Iranian school. What do we call that? Is it not a war crime?

‎‎”Lest the ambassador forgets, the November 21, 2024 warrant issued by the International Criminal Court (ICC) for the arrest of Benjamin Netanyahu and former Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza is still valid. The charges include using starvation as a weapon of war, murder and persecution. What else can we call state terrorism?

‎”To Michael Freeman, the Israeli Ambassador, we have this to say, ‘Keep your tales by moonlight to the fairy angels in Tel Aviv and Washington.

”You can railroad the White House.  You can blackmail Arab leaders. Nigerians refuse to be hoodwinked. Sleep-walkers have no place here. Kudos to that journalist for shutting you up.”

  • 68% of ‘connected’ American Jews support the US-Israel war against Iran, survey finds

68% of ‘connected’ American Jews support the US-Israel war against Iran, survey finds

The results suggest U.S. Jews are more supportive than Americans overall but less than Israeli Jews.

About two-thirds of “connected” American Jews support the U.S.-Israel war against Iran, a new survey has found, even as they are concerned that it could exacerbate antisemitism and anti-Israel sentiment in the United States.

The results of the survey, taken last week by Israel’s Jewish People Policy Institute, suggest that American Jews are more supportive of the war than Americans overall. Multiple surveys last week found that about 60% of American voters opposed the military action, with support significantly lower among Democrats, historically the party of most Jewish voters.

A partisan shift was apparent in the JPPI survey, with near-total support for the war from those who describe themselves as politically conservative. Still, 57% of “leaning liberal” Jews said they support the war. Self-identified “strong liberals” were the only group of U.S. Jews to say they oppose the war, with only 28% backing it.

The survey of 692 American Jews drew from a panel maintained by JPPI that aims to reflect the denominational distribution of U.S. Jews. The institute says its polls reflect the sentiments of “connected” Jews because its panel includes fewer intermarried Jews, more Jews who are affiliated with denominations and more Jews who have lived in Israel than demographic data would suggest is representative of U.S Jewry overal

The JPPI survey finds that American Jews are more like Israeli Jews than like U.S. voters overall. An Israel Democracy Institute poll taken last week found that 93% of Jewish Israelis supported the military operations against Iran.

Iran has long waged a campaign against both Israel and the United States, but while it has struck at U.S. targets around the world, Israel is geographically in its crosshairs. Its missiles killed dozens of Israelis during a 12-day war last year and have killed more than a dozen already during the current war, which has expanded to much of the Middle East.

President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu have indicated that in addition to ending Iran’s nuclear ambitions and demolishing its military infrastructure, they want the nearly 50-year-old Islamic Republic regime to fall. The JPPI poll found that only a quarter of U.S. Jews say regime change should be a primary goal of the war, compared with 58% who say the war should seek to “eliminate nuclear program, ballistic missile capabilities, and support of terror.”

American Jews polled by JPPI also said they expected the war to increase both antisemitism (52%) and anti-Israel sentiment (45%) in the United States. Already, the war has sparked debate over whether Trump was forced into the conflict by Netanyahu — a narrative they both have rejected. The survey found that 72% of American Jews believe Trump needed no convincing, while only 14% believe Netanyahu was the primary driver of military action against Iran.
