Breaking: Teacher killed, students writing NECO kidnapped

Gunmen suspected to be Boko Haram/ISWAP terrorists have invaded Government Day Secondary School in Lassa town, Borno State, killing a teacher and abducting an unspecified number of students writing the National Examinations Council (NECO).

The armed assault occurred on Monday morning in the Askira/Uba Local Government Area of Borno State, reports said.

According to available information, the heavily armed gunmen rode into the town around 9:00 am on motorcycles, dressed in military camouflage.

They opened fire sporadically, triggering mass panic across the school and local communities before whisking away an unknown number of candidates into the bush.

A teacher was reportedly killed during the attack, while another sustained injuries.

Confirming the incident, the spokesperson of the Borno State Police Command, ASP Nahum Daso, said some students remain unaccounted for.

“At about 9 a.m., an unspecified number of Boko Haram and ISWAP terrorists attacked a secondary school and shot sporadically into the air.

“During the attack, an unspecified number of students were abducted, while some are still missing,” Daso said.

He added that the command could not immediately confirm reports of fatalities among the victims.

The PRO added that security operatives, including the military, the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF) and the area commander in Askira/Uba, have launched a coordinated search-and-rescue operation.

Daso confirmed that the joint security forces are combing the surrounding forests in an effort to locate the abducted students and apprehend the attackers.

    81% drop in terror-related deaths, a landmark achievement in Tinubu’s counter-terrorism efforts – TDF

    By Iyiola Olalere
The Democratic Front (TDF) has identified a drop in terror-related deaths in Nigeria by 81% as a major achievement in the ongoing war against terrorism in the country.

In a statement signed by its Chairman, Mallam Danjuma Muhammad and Secretary Chief Wale Adedayo, TDF said the revelation, which first emerged in President Bola Tinubu’s National Democracy Day speech, was an indication of the administration’s great strides.

The statement read in part: “We are heartened to welcome this remarkable landmark achievement in the ongoing counter terrorism efforts of the Tinubu administration, especially at this crucial period when the spate of insecurity is being weaponised by the opposition against the government.

“This significant drop in the number of Nigerians who have died from terror-related attacks has brought back sad memories of the bombardments of a Catholic Church in Niger state, Nyanya Motor Park, Kano Central Mosque, Maiduguri Central Mosque, the Sani Abacha Military Cantonment in Abuja, and several other civilian targets where scores of innocent people were murdered by terrorists.

“Despite the fact that continuous abductions and sporadic banditry in the ungoverned spaces are still creating security concerns and public apprehension, we pay kudos to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s introduction of non kinetic approach to counter terrorism, as well as the ongoing shift towards “precision targeting” that has led to improved military operations against terrorists.

“Furthermore, the reduction in the number of terror-related deaths in Nigeria aptly explains the monumental success recorded in military operations, which have neutralised over 13,000 insurgents and also led to the surrender of over 124,000 low-level terrorists. And we believe that the immediate impact of these commendable strides is the reduction in terror-related deaths by 81%, as noted by the President.

“It is equally pertinent in this particular regard to note President Tinubu’s cautious, consistent, and effective coordination of the ongoing Deradicalisation Rehabilitation and Reintegration (DRR) programme.

“We, however, urge the managers of the programme to remain focused and vigilant in ensuring that repentant insurgents do not bypass it to infiltrate civilian communities to cause fear and uncertainty among residents.

“The fruitful partnership between the Tinubu administration and the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA), Ibadan, is also yielding impressive results by providing repentant fighters, widows, and displaced victims of terrorism with agricultural and economic opportunities to make a decent living.

“Finally, we laud President Tinubu’s diplomatic partnership with other countries like the United States, Turkey, and France in his result-oriented multifaceted counterinsurgency moves. It shows that the President fully understands the true nature of terrorism as a local crime that is fueled by international dimensions.”

The group also called on Nigerians to ignore the rantings of the opposition and continue to give their moral support to the President and the Armed Forces in the unwavering determination to eliminate terrorism in Nigeria.

The Federal High Court in Abuja on Thursday convicted and sentenced five men, including a Nigerien citizen, to a 25-year imprisonment for terrorism offences.

Justice Binta Nyako handed down the judgment after the convicts pleaded guilty to the four-count charge preferred against them by the Department of State Services (DSS).

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the convicts are Yusuf Mohammed (aka Bature), Goni Ibrahim Bindi (aka Goni Mutuwa), Sani Tulur (aka Danladi), Mubarak Ibrahim and Musa Alhaji Adamu (aka Gado Banufe).

After their guilty plea, the prosecution sought to tender items recovered from the defendants.

With the court’s permission, the prosecution tendered a forwarding letter, accompanied with the investigation report and the statements of the defendants.

The prosecution also tendered 15 units of AK 103 rifles complete with its magazines and 1434 rounds of 7.62mm live ammunition, to which the defence raised no objection.

Justice Nyako admitted the items as exhibits and proceeded to convict the defendants.

The judge then asked the defendants to make a plea of allocutus each, which they did.

The prosecution, therefore, applied that a Volkswagen car, used in transporting arms and ammunition, be forfeited to the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

In her judgment, Justice Nyako found the defendants guilty as charged and convicted them.

She sentenced them to 25 years each on count one.

On counts two and three, she sentenced the 3rd, 4th and 5th defendants to seven years jail term each while, on count four, only the 1st defendant bagged 25 years imprisonment.

The judge ordered that the sentences shall run concurrently, beginning from the date of their arrest.

She ordered that the convicts should serve their terms of improvement in a place designated by the Minister of Interior.

Justice Nyako equally ordered that the exhibits recovered from them be forfeited to the Federal Government.

NAN reports that in count one, the convicts between April 23 and April 24 were alleged to have committed the offence.

They were alleged to have jointly conspired “to render assistance to a terrorist by agreeing and intentionally playing various roles towards conveying 15 AK 103 rifles as well as about 1,434 rounds of 7.62mm live ammunition from Diffa region, Republic of Niger, to one Malam Ahmad.”

Ahmad is said to be a member of the Boko Haram terrorist group based in Borgu LGA of Niger State.

The offence is contrary to Section 26(1) of the Terrorism (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022, among other counts.

Court fixes June 3 for judgement in Owo attack that killed 41 worshippers

The Federal High Court in Abuja has fixed June 3 for judgement in the trial of five men being prosecuted for the terrorist attack in Owo church that killed no fewer than 41 worshippers.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Department of State Services (DSS) had filed terrorism charge against the suspects for their alleged involvement in the June 5, 2022 attack on St. Francis Catholic Church in Owo, Ondo State.

Justice Emeka Nwite had, on May 26, reserved the judgement after lawyers to the prosecution and the defence adopted their final written addresses and presented their arguments for and against the case.

Justice Nwite had said that judgement would be reserved to a date to be communicated to parties.

NAN, however, gathered on Monday that the matter is now fixed for June 3 for judgement.

In his final submission in the last adjourned date, lawyer to the prosecution, Ayodeji Adedipe, SAN, urged the court to convict the defendants and impose the maximum sentence of death in view of the enormity of the crime they allegedly committed.

On his part, the defendants’ lawyer, Abdullahi Mohammad, prayed the court to discharge and acquit his clients on the grounds that the prosecution was unable to establish its case against them.

A total of 41 worshippers were killed during the terror attack on the church, while over 140 others suffered various injuries.

The DSS had called 11 witnesses to establish the allegations against the defendants in the trial that began on Aug. 1, 2025.

The trial court had admitted the confessional statements of the defendants following the conclusion of the trial- within-trial conducted to establish that the witnesses’ statements were voluntarily given.

The five defendants are Idris Abdulmalik Omeiza (25 years), Al Qasim Idris (20 years), Jamiu Abdulmalik (26 years), Abdulhaleem Idris (25 years) and Momoh Otuho Abubakar (47 years).

The DSS had, in the commencement of the trial, sought an accelerated hearing which was granted by the court.

The wife and daughter of the Alagamo of Agamo, Oba Kehinde Jacob Falodun, have recounted how suspected bandits hacked the monarch to death after invading his palace in Akure North Local Government Area of Ondo State on Wednesday evening.

The attackers stormed the palace around 6pm, firing gunshots that sent residents of the Agamo community running for safety.

The Olori (wife of the monarch) said the gunmen arrived shortly after the king returned from Akure, the Ondo State capital, and sat outside the palace to rest.

“He was seated in front of the palace. He went to Akure and came back, saying he would want to rest a bit, so he sat outside,” she said in tears.

She said about 10 armed men entered the palace, with some positioned at the entrance and others moving inside, forcing her to run into a nearby bush while being chased.

She added: “The bandits just came and started shooting.

“They were about 10 in number.

“Three of them were at the entrance while about seven came inside.

“I ran away; one of them chased me but he did not know how I escaped into a nearby bush.

“I was shot at but it did not affect me.”

According to her, the attackers dragged the monarch away while she cried for help and later struck him on the head and stomach.

She added that they were speaking Hausa.

She said: “They kept dragging my husband and I kept shouting, but nobody could come out to rescue him.

“They later hit something on his head and his stomach.

    “He has been killed.

    “They were speaking Hausa language.”

The monarch’s daughter said her father kept telling the attackers that he was a king as they beat him and tried to abduct him before killing him outside the palace.

She said: “They just invaded the palace and kept shooting at the king but the bullets didn’t penetrate.

“They carried him, but he kept telling them that he was a king.

“They kept beating him, wanting to take him away.”

She added that the attackers later brought out a sharp object and attacked him after carrying him several times while firing shots into the air.

She said: “They kept shooting sporadically.

    “Everybody ran for their lives.

“They carried him three times and baba kept telling them to drop him.

“Later, they brought out something like a knife and attacked him.

“The king was later killed outside the palace with blood gushing out of his head.

“He was with the Olori and a female guest when they came.

“They beat the guest and seized her mobile phone.”

The daughter also said the attackers wore clothing similar to that of Fulani herders, spoke Hausa, and entered through the Itaogbolu axis.

The Ondo State Police Command confirmed the incident, saying it occurred on February 18, 2026 at about 7:10pm.

Police spokesperson Abayomi Jimoh said officers received a report around 7:50pm that armed men had taken the monarch from his residence.

“The victim was later found a few metres away with gunshot wounds and was confirmed dead at the scene,” the police said.

The Divisional Police Officer and tactical teams, working with Amotekun, local hunters and vigilantes, have launched a search of nearby bushes for the suspects.

“Efforts are ongoing to track down and arrest the fleeing suspects. Monitoring and surveillance activities have been intensified to ensure the safety of residents,” the command added.

  • Suspect tells court how he joined Al-Barnawi’s terror group, Ansaru

Suspect tells court how he joined Al-Barnawi’s terror group, Ansaru

Mohammed Bashir Saleh, one of the suspects standing trial on alleged terrorism, on Wednesday, told the Federal High Court in Abuja how he joined the Ansaru terrorist group led by Khalid Al-Barnawi.

Saleh, in a video recording played before Justice Emeka Nwite, said he joined the terrorist organisation in Bauchi shortly before the attack on the United Nations (UN) Building in Abuja.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Abuja UN Building was bombed on Aug. 26, 2011, by the group where over 20 persons died and several others sustained varying degree of injuries.

Mohammed Usman, also known as Al-Barnawi, along with other suspected members of his group, were alleged to have carried out the attack.

Al-Barnawi, the alleged leader of Boko Haram dissident splinter group, Ansaru, and Mohammed Bashir Saleh; Umar Mohammed Bello, a.k.a Datti; Mohammmed Salisu and Yakubu Nuhu, a.k.a Bello Maishayi, are being prosecuted by the Department of State Services (DSS).

They are among others, accused of being members of Ansaru, also known as Jama’atu Ansarul Muslimina Fi Biladis Sudan.

The defendants are also alleged to have conspired among themselves to carry out acts of terrorism between 2011 and 2013 in Sokoto, Kebbi, Bauchi, Borno, Gombe and other states in the northern part of the country.

At the resumed trial-within-trial on Wednesday, Saleh, in the video, told the court that during the time he joined the group, he had a blossomed relationship with his members.

After the video recording of the interview session involving Saleh was played in open court, the defence counsel cross-examined the 3rd prosecution witness (PW-3), simply identified as “TSR-3.”

Under cross-examination by lawyer to the first defendant (Al-Barnawi), F. K. Kaigama, the witness said he works in the Technical Department of the DSS and that part of his functions include setting up of audio/video recording machine in the interview room.

The PW-3 said he also engages in audio/video record of suspects during interview sessions.

On what are his other functions, the witness said: “in addition to the stated functions, I also undertake computer forensic examinations, mobile phones forensic examination, crime scene investigation, like fingerprint collection from the crime scene and analysis at the laboratory.”

He said he did more than setting up of the forensic audio/video recording machine in relation to the 1st defendant.

He added that he did the audio video recording of the interview session of the 1st defendant in real time (that is, as it was happening).

He said the third thing he did in relation to the 1st defendant was the audio/visual recording of the statement taking session and the audio/visual recording of the translation of the statement of the 1st defendant.

On whether there is a person known as James in the Technical Department where he works, the witness said there are several James in the Technical Department of the DSS.

At that point, Justice Nwite directed the postponement of further proceedings on the grounds that he had other engagements.

The case was consequently adjourned until March 2 for continuation of the cross-examination of PW-3 in trial-within-trial.

Al- Barnawi was arrested by DSS in April 2016 in Lokoja, Kogi, five years after the attack on the Abuja UN Building.
