Gov Mbah Celebrates Tinubu at 74, Hails His Courage in Leadership, Selflessness

Gov Mbah Celebrates Tinubu at 74, Hails His Courage in Leadership, Selflessness

The Governor of Enugu State, Dr. Peter Mbah, has paid a glowing tribute to President Bola Tinubu as he clocks 74 today, March 29, 2026.

Mbah, in a statement issued by his media aide, Mr Uche Anichukwu, on Sunday in Enugu, described Tinubu as a visionary and courageous leader whose love for the country had been demonstrated beyond any shred of doubt.

He said that at 74, Tinubu’s life’s journey had continued to stand as a testament to an enduring dedication to the development of Nigeria, while “his leadership continues to reflect resilience and a bold commitment to reform, inclusivity, and national renewal.”

According to him, President Tinubu has always risen to the occasion at the toughest times in the nation’s history, recalling also his days in the trenches to restore democratic rule and his tough decisions to rescue and reboot the nation’s economy.

“President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s 74th birthday is an important moment to reflect on the life of a man whose journey has been deeply intertwined with Nigeria’s democratic evolution and economic transformation.

“Courage in the face of adversity is a defining feature of leadership. The President’s life’s journey boldly encapsulates this quality.

“From his role in the pro-democracy struggle to his stewardship in public office, there has never been anything convoluted about his vision.

“He has consistently demonstrated courage, resilience, and a firm belief in the Nigerian project. His selflessness and love for country are not performative. Neither are his actions driven by a quest for validation.

“So, we are celebrating not just the man, but what he has done for us – how he has deftly pulled our nation’s economy from the precipice,” he said.

Mbah noted that the impacts of his policies are not mere abstractions; they are all around us, adding that the reforms we are witnessing today are not easy choices, but they are necessary steps towards building a more resilient and competitive economy.

“We have seen macro-pressures ease, a huge rise in our foreign reserves, and unprecedented unification of our exchange rates.

“At moments of great national reform, leadership requires vision and resolve. President Tinubu has shown both, and history often vindicates leaders who have the courage to confront long-standing structural challenges.

“When the results of his reforms fully crystallise, there can be no doubt that the president is indeed a man made for this moment – a man for all seasons!” Mbah said.

Mbah said that the milestones remained an opportunity for reflection, adding: “We owe him a measure of gratitude for the sacrifices and responsibilities he has taken upon himself in steering the country through a critical phase.”

The governor called on Nigerians to continue to support the President, noting that nation-building calls for collective action and responsibility.

“But beyond celebrating the man, the most meaningful gesture Nigerians can make is to support the difficult but necessary journey of national renewal that his administration has embarked upon.

“Nation-building is never the task of one individual. It requires collective belief, shared sacrifice, and sustained support from citizens.

“So, as we celebrate President Tinubu at 74, my prayer is that he continues to be guided by wisdom and strength, and that Nigerians across all divides rally behind the vision of building a stronger, more prosperous nation,” he concluded.

The Oyo State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening its partnership with the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO) to enhance agricultural productivity and improve food security across the state.

The Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Musbau Babatunde, gave the assurance on behalf of Governor Seyi Makinde while receiving the newly appointed FAO Country Representative at the SSG Conference Room, Secretariat, Ibadan.

Prof. Babatunde said the administration remains focused on leveraging strategic partnerships with international development organisations such as the FAO to drive innovation, boost productivity, and achieve sustainable rural development.

He described agriculture as a key pillar of the state’s economic agenda, noting that collaboration with global bodies would support farmers with modern techniques, capacity building, and access to improved inputs.

The SSG also highlighted ongoing government interventions in the sector, adding that the state is open to further technical support and knowledge exchange to strengthen value chains and promote food sufficiency.

In his remarks, the Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development, Barrister Olasunkanmi Olaleye, said the administration has recorded significant progress in agriculture.

He listed key initiatives to include the promotion of mechanised farming through a 50 per cent tractorisation subsidy, distribution of improved seedlings and farm inputs, and provision of fertilisers at subsidised rates.

Other interventions, he said, include rehabilitation of rural farm roads, irrigation support programmes, and the strengthening of extension services to reach farmers at the grassroots.

Olaleye added that the government has intensified efforts in livestock development, fisheries support, youth engagement in agribusiness, and the promotion of agro-processing and value addition to reduce post-harvest losses and increase farmers’ income.

Also speaking, the FAO Country Representative, Hussein Gadain, commended the Oyo State Government for its proactive approach to agricultural development and expressed readiness to deepen collaboration in climate-smart agriculture, agribusiness development, and food systems transformation.

Gadain highlighted FAO’s contributions to agricultural development in Nigeria, including support for smallholder farmers through capacity building, provision of climate-resilient seeds, promotion of sustainable farming practices, pest and disease control, and food systems strengthening.

He added that the organisation is also supporting farmers with early warning systems, digital agricultural solutions, and resilience-building programmes aimed at mitigating the effects of climate change and improving food security nationwide.

Election should not be a trigger of conflicts, says NOA

NOA Kwara Director, Alhaji Abdulganiy Dare at the sensitization programme on ‘Election without bitterness’

    By Bushrah Yusuf-Badmus

The National Orientation Agency (NOA) has said that electoral participation in Nigeria should be a means of promoting national peace, and not a trigger for conflicts.

The State Director, NOA in Kwara, Mr Abdulganiy Dare, stated this on Thursday in Ilorin during a sensitisation workshop with concerned stakeholders on ”Election without bitterness”.

Dare said “as we anticipate the 2027 General Elections, it is imperative that we begin to lay the groundwork for peace now.

The NOA director said the gathering of stakeholders was to make commitment and take a proactive stand toward having a rancour free election in Kwara.

“The moment we allow bitterness to take roots in our political engagements, we lose the moral high ground to call ourselves a civilized society.

”A responsible state is built when political actors stop seeing opponents as enemy, but as partners in the quest for a better world.

”In the past, elections have sometimes been viewed as a do or die affair, creating deep seated divisions within our communities.

”However, we must realize that a peaceful election is not a miracle.

“It is a choice made by the political office seekers who choose this world over weapon and by the voters who chooses peace over provocation.

”We must embrace tolerance and moral high ground, because the strength of our democracy is found in our diversity of opinion, not in our ability to silence those who disagree with us,” he said.

According to him, the agency is committed to engaging every corner of the state through town hall meetings, media advocacy, and grassroots dialogue to ensure that every citizen understand their role in maintaining order.

Also, the INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner in Kwara, Dr Gabriel Longpet said that the communities are in need of growth, jobs, infrastructure, and hope and not endless quarrels.

Longpet said when bitterness is allowed to dominate the political space, ordinary people become the greatest victims.

”In every society, politics is meant to serve as a tool for progress, unity, and the advancement of common good.

”However, experience has shown that when politics is driven by bitterness, grudges, and unhealthy rivalry, it loses its true purpose and becomes a stumbling block to development.

”My conviction is that leadership should be about inclusivity, tolerance, and open-mindedness.

”We may not always agree on ideas, but disagreement must never breed enmity and constructive criticism should replace destructive attacks, and dialogue should replace hostility,” he said.

The Convener of the Coalition of Civil Society Organizations in Kwara, Abdulrahman Ayuba said the media should not be partisan in reportage as this would not allow them perform their watchdog role in the society.

He also urged citizens to be cautious of posts that could cause problems and always verify information before putting them out in the social media.

Chairman of SDP in Kwara Mr Ibrahim Saheed appealed to INEC to maintain neutrality, as it is very important to achieve politics or election without violence.

He said a political party must not be seen as a favorite of the INEC.

Other stakeholders at the programme include representatives of the NPF, NSCDC, EFCC,LP and others.

CCIDESOR calls for collective efforts to rescue comatose LG system

The Citizens Centre for Integrated Development and Social Rights (CCIDESOR) has called for collective efforts of stakeholders and Nigerians to rescue the Local Government (LG) system from it present comatose state.

The Executive Director of CCIDESOR, Dr. Emeka Ononamadu, made the call in a media briefing on Wednesday in Enugu.

Ononamadu noted that the root cause of this failure lied in the absence of true financial, administrative, and political autonomy for LGA as evidence from CCIDESOR’s and Situationroom field monitoring of capital projects analysis across selected LGAs in South-East.

He said that the recent analysis revealed that: allocated funds are not translating into visible development capital projects; but are limited, poorly prioritised, or misaligned core constitutional responsibilities—primary education, primary healthcare, and agriculture—are neglected.

The executive director called for urgent constitutional reforms, particularly in the amendment of Section 162 of the 1999 Constitution, to guarantee full autonomy of LGAs and establish a citizen-driven accountability framework.

He noted that current delay in local government autonomy is not a neutral decision—it actively sustains a system that enables: fraud, waste, abuse, poverty and underdevelopment.

Ononamadu, however, said that conversely, timely constitutional reform would block major leakages of public funds, strengthen accountability systems and deliver measurable development outcomes at the grassroots.

He made a call to action on President Bola Tinubu to drive structural and constitutional reforms and champion the urgent amendment of Section 162 of the 1999 Constitution to abolish the State Joint Local Government Account and guarantee direct allocation to LGAs.

“The president should provide executive backing; issue clear policy directives supporting LGA autonomy and zero tolerance for state interference in LGA funds and mobilise political consensus on the matter among others,” he said.

Ononamadu urged the national assembly to fast-track constitutional amendment of Section 162 and other relevant provisions affecting LGA autonomy and legislate transparency mechanisms.

“Enact laws mandating compulsory publication of LGA budgets, allocations, and expenditures; strengthen oversight functions; conduct regular public hearings on LGA funding and utilization; and facilitate inclusive public consultations to ensure citizen input into the reform process.”

He urged state governments to transit from control to support of LG systems, immediately cease diversion or control of LGA funds through joint accounts and allow elected LG officials to operate independently without intimidation or undue influence.

“Review and amend state laws that undermine LGA autonomy, offer capacity-building support rather than financial control, and focus on state-level responsibilities while allowing LGAs to handle grassroots development,” he said.

The executive director said that Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) should play critical watchdog and mobilisation role; intensify national and grassroots advocacy for LGA autonomy and accountability reforms, and expandibg independent tracking of LGA allocations, budgets, and project implementation.

“The CSOs should educate communities on their rights and tools for demanding accountability, produce evidence-based reports, generate and disseminate credible data to influence policy decisions, and strengthen alliances across CSOs, professional bodies, and community groups to amplify impact.”

Ononamadu called on the media to drive transparency and public awareness through investigative reporting: expose misuse, diversion, and underperformance in LGA fund utilization and educate citizens on LGA budgets, allocations, and their rights to accountability.

“Provide platforms for CSOs, experts, and citizens to discuss LGA autonomy; monitor and report on government commitments and actions regarding constitutional amendments and use data to tell compelling stories about gaps between allocations and development outcomes,” he said.

He called on citizens and communities to request access to LGA budgets, projects, and financial reports, attend town hall meetings, budget sessions, track implementation of local projects and report discrepancies.

“Leverage petitions, social media, and community platforms to demand accountability, elect leaders committed to transparency, service delivery, and community development,” he added.
