World Theatre Day: Industry Players Push for Revival of Nigerian Theatre.

    ‎By Oluwaseyi Oduneye-Ogunwomoju.

‎A Nollywood actor, Babatunde Ojobaro, popularly known as Mister Rain, has said Nigeria’s theatre industry is yet to reach its full potential.

‎Ojobaro made this known while commemorating World Theatre Day, observed annually on March 27.

‎The day celebrates theatre arts and their impact on society, highlighting the role of stage performance in storytelling, cultural expression and social change.

‎According to Ojobaro, although Nigeria boasts immense talent, compelling stories and willing audiences, the sector still lacks the structures required to thrive.

‎He identified key challenges as inadequate performance spaces, limited funding and weak audience development.

‎“The major challenges include few functional performance spaces, poor funding and sponsorship structures, as well as weak audience development from schools and communities.

‎“In addition, theatre is not yet treated as an economic sector, and many practitioners migrate to other industries or abroad.

‎“In short, we have the creativity but not enough infrastructure,” he said.

‎Ojobaro stressed the need for deliberate efforts to grow the sector, including the establishment of community theatre hubs, reintroduction of theatre in schools and stronger collaboration among practitioners.

‎He also called for improved digital visibility and proper positioning of theatre within the creative economy.

‎“These steps will strengthen the ecosystem and accelerate growth,” he added.

‎The actor further urged government at all levels to play active roles by providing accessible venues, creating production grants and reviving school theatre festivals.

‎“Supporting technical theatre training for youth employment and partnering with existing organisations are equally important,” he said.

‎He described theatre as a powerful tool for education, employment, cultural preservation and national storytelling.

‎Similarly, a 300-level Theatre Arts student at the University of Ibadan, Odama Bakari, described theatre as a dynamic and immersive art form that connects people.

‎“It is the magic of the stage, where raw emotions meet action. Whether it’s fantasy or realistic drama, theatre brings stories to life.

‎“It is a total art form involving script, movement and set design, all working together to build a world before an actor speaks,” he said.

‎Bakari noted that in Nigeria, theatre also serves as a bridge to cultural roots, transforming oral traditions and proverbs into modern expressions.

‎He added that World Theatre Day serves as a source of motivation for aspiring practitioners.

‎“As a student and aspiring actor, the day validates our commitment to the craft and reminds us of its global relevance,” he said.

‎While acknowledging improvements in technology and production quality, Bakari said more investment in infrastructure and creative spaces was needed.

‎“We need more functional theatres across cities to reduce the burden of centralisation, especially in Lagos,” he said.

‎He also emphasised the importance of strengthening links between academic institutions and the professional industry to make theatre a viable career path.

‎“When students see clear pathways to paid opportunities, the quality of output will improve,” he added.

‎Also speaking, a 400-level student, Awah Mfonobong, described theatre as a collaborative art that blends acting, directing, music, costumes, lighting and set design.

‎She said World Theatre Day offers practitioners a rare moment of recognition.

‎“Theatre is often misunderstood and underappreciated, but this day reminds us that our work matters,” she said.

‎Mfonobong called on policymakers to improve funding and infrastructure to make theatre more accessible and inclusive.

‎“If properly supported, theatre will not be limited to certain social classes but open to everyone,” she said.

‎World Theatre Day was established in 1961 by the International Theatre Institute (ITI) and first celebrated in 1962.

Coronation Asset Management Ltd, a subsidiary of Coronation Group, is set to list the Coronation Infrastructure Fund (CIF) on the Nigerian Exchange Ltd.

Aigbovboise Aig-Imoukhuede, Coronation Asset Management’s Chief Executive Officer, in a statement on Tuesday, said CIF would list 87.9 million units at N100 per unit, representing the proceeds from its successful Series I raise.

Aig-Imoukhuede said that the milestone followed strong investors’interest at launch, with CIF already earning recognition as Nigeria’s Best Performing Maiden Infrastructure Fund by Gazet International Awards.

According to him, the listing will enhance visibility, transparency, and accessibility to institutional and retail investors, enabling broader participation in long-term infrastructure development.

He further described the development as a bold move that followed the Fund’s record-setting debut as Nigeria’s highest-ever Series I capital raise for a local infrastructure fund, with ₦8.79 billion secured from institutional and retail investors.

“The Coronation Infrastructure Fund is not only a strategic investment tool; it is a nation-building mechanism.

“This listing on the NGX creates the access and liquidity required to enable Nigerian investors to participate in the structural transformation of the economy,” he said.

Aig-Imoukhuede noted that CIF invests across key priority sectors—including transportation, real estate, utilities, social infrastructure, telecommunications, and energy—to ensure diversification and deliver measurable economic value.

“The Fund has already distributed over N1.7 billion in dividends across two income distribution cycles, underscoring its performance and reliability as an infrastructure-focused product.

“CIF delivers more than yield; it offers transparency, liquidity through the exchange listing, and consistent market engagement through quarterly infrastructure newsletters that deepen investor education,” he said.

Also, Mayowa Ikotun, Head, CIF at Coronation Asset Management, added that “Infrastructure is the bedrock of inclusive economic growth.

“With CIF, we are deploying capital with intention, targeting high-impact projects that deliver long-term returns while solving real developmental challenges.”

CIF is a purpose-built financial product designed to channel long-term capital into Nigeria’s most pressing infrastructure needs while offering investors access to steady income and capital appreciation.

Guinness World Record: I was inspired by Kaffy, says Solaru
    GWR

    By Oluwaseyi Oduneye-Ogunwomoju

Oluwatosin Solaru, who recently completed the Guinness World Record (GWR) for the longest dance marathon by an individual, has traced her inspiration to Kafayat Shefau, also known as Kaffy.

Solaru told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Ibadan on Wednesday that when Kaffy and her team broke the record in 2006, she got inspired to be a record breaker.

“Then, I thought it had to be arranged and organised by an organisation like Silverbird or those who did hers.

“When Hilda Baci did hers last year, I met a friend who had also attempted a wash-a-thon, and I discovered it was something I could apply for; and it’s done,” she said.

Solaru alleged that Nigerians hardly understand talent, let alone embrace talented people.

“I had to do my part of making a clear statement that dance is beyond just a hobby,” she said.

NAN recalls that Solaru commenced her GWR on June 22 and ended it on June 29 at the Nile Cinema, Royal Roots Mall, Ikota, Lagos.

She added that, contrary to popular belief, not all dance categories with the GWR have the same title, explaining she applied for the longest dance marathon by an individual.

“There was very little support prior to the event, but as soon as the second day of the attempt, we started seeing more support from home and online.

“I am a professional actor and writer, a spoken words artist and an entrepreneur.

“In a rough estimate, it costs N3.5 million to put together the GWR performance,” she said.

The 30-year-old said she was considering collaborations with more dancers.

“I’ll be starting with my alma mater; I would love to have a series of workshops and seminars with at least 30 schools in Ogun and 20 in Lagos,” she said.

She said that her father was supportive from the beginning, as he had always shown interest in her career, while her mother was a little sceptical.

NAN reports that the current GWR for the longest dance marathon by an individual is 127 hours, achieved by Srushti Jagtap, from India, in 2023.

Jagtap danced for five days straight at Dayanand College in Latur, Maharashtra, India.

Meanwhile, Solaru recorded 157 hours to beat the existing record, though still awaiting GWR ratification

Chioito releases new single, ‘Kalo Jaiye’

    By Taiye Olayemi

Nigerian-American pop artiste , Tochi Opara, popularly known as “Chioito”, has released a new single titled ‘Kalo Jaiye’.

Chioito, who is also a legal practitioner, disclosed this in a statement on Wednesday in Lagos.

She described the song as an afro-pop fusion which draws a lot of inspiration from the need to unwind during the Yuletide.

Chioito said Nigerians must cultivate the habit of unwinding in spite current challenges.

She said that ‘Kalo Jaiye’ which was produced in the United States by ‘Okithewizard’, was coming on the heels of her two earlier songs, ‘Hold The Melody’ and ‘Right Here’

According to her, the music can be accessed on major music streaming platforms.

“With this song, I wanted to create something fun to end the year, because ‘omo’, we deserve it. I want Nigerians to unwind despite challenges.

“With my last song, ‘Right Here’, I showed a lot of my passionate side, and with this song, I just leaned into my Nigerian side because at the end of the day, I have to have fun.

“I love Yoruba and our pidgin and how it really just lights any mood you are in, so, I decided to pay tribute to Nigeria and make the hook.

“I am a pop artiste as well, so, people can see my pop influence in my verses. I really wanted to create a space of both hardcore Afro and hardcore pop without watering either down.

“I am a Nigerian girl and having fun is five-and-six with me. And that doesn’t even necessarily mean clubbing.

“Anyone can kalo Jaiye. You can be vexed in your office and say ‘omo ka lo jaiye’ and that means your smoke break, or prayer break. I have a very busy life and having fun and bringing the party in my every day thing is important,” she said.

Chioito noted that her performance styles had been influenced right from childhood by musical legends like Michael Jackson and Shakira.

According to her, observers have likened Chioito’s vocal skills to that of Rihanna’s.
