Nigeria’s blue economy is witnessing monumental growth on President Tinubu’s watch-Group

    By Iyiola Olalere

The Tinubu Media Volunteers (TMV) has hailed what it described as the monumental transformation and growth being witnessed in the country’s maritime sector under President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope agenda.

In a statement signed by its Chairman Chukwudi Enekwechi and Secretary Segun Ogedengbe, the group argued that the Tinubu administration was not wrong to create a ministry targeted at reaping benefits from the blue economy.

The statement read in part, “This development is targeted at unlocking the estimated $3 trillion blue economy using the economic reforms of the administration as the driver.

“Also as part of the significant impacts of the reforms is the zero piracy incidents in the Gulf of Guinea for over four years running under the Deep Blue Programme.

“Another major result of the reforms is the disappearance of the age-long gridlock at the Apapa port thereby bringing tremendous relief to businesses and port users, which was absent over the last two decades.

“We also acknowledge that as a result of the renewed global confidence being experienced in the sector, the federal government has recently secured £746 million for the modernisation of Apapa and Tin Can Island Ports.

“As a result of the reforms, the sector has also witnessed a significant improvement in revenue generation with the figure rising from N700.79 billion in 2023 to about N1.83 trillion in 2025, and this is driven by transparency, automation and stricter regulatory oversight.

“We also note that fish production has grown from 1.1 million tonnes to 1.4 million tonnes thereby enhancing food security and the creation of jobs along the fisheries value chain.
Furthermore, we applaud the federal government for Nigeria’s recent return to the Council of the International Maritime Organisation after a 14-year absence. Definitely, this reflects a renewed global confidence in the country’s maritime sector.”

The group insisted that the visionary leadership of President Tinubu has helped to unlock various sectors of the economy for the progress and prosperity of Nigerians.

    By Stellamaris Ashinze

Lagos:   The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) and the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) have activated coordinated cybersecurity measures following concerns affecting aspects of CAC’s digital systems.

This was made known in a statement by Mrs Hadiza Umar, Director, Corporate Communications and Media Relations Department on Friday in Lagos.

Umar said the measures were in line with national cybersecurity frameworks, aimed at safeguarding critical infrastructure and ensuring the integrity of government digital services.

She reiterated the need for all Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) to adopt proactive cybersecurity measures in compliance with the National Cybersecurity Policy and Strategy (NCPS) 2021.

Umar noted that MDAs had been directed to immediately review and strengthen their cybersecurity architecture to address emerging threats targeting government systems and sensitive data.

According to her, MDAs are required to conduct comprehensive security assessments, identify and remediate vulnerabilities, and reinforce access control mechanisms across critical platforms.

She added that government institutions must also enhance data protection measures, maintain effective backup and disaster recovery systems, and improve monitoring capabilities to detect and respond to suspicious activities.

The spokesperson emphasised the need for functional incident response frameworks, including prompt reporting of cybersecurity breaches to enable coordinated intervention.

Umar noted that detailed cybersecurity guidelines had already been issued to MDAs as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen resilience across public sector digital infrastructure.

The director said the measures were aimed at improving the overall security posture of government institutions and ensuring the continued protection of national digital assets.

She reaffirmed the commitment of the agency to supporting MDAs in safeguarding digital systems and advancing cybersecurity best practices across the public sector. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

How we arrested man, who threatened to attack Abuja schools–DSS operative

An operative of the Department of State Services (DSS), Michael Jego, on Friday told the Federal High Court in Abuja how a man, John Agbo, who threatened to attack some elite schools in Abuja, was arrested.

Jego while testifying as the 1st prosecution witness (PW-1) in the ongoing trial of Agbo told Justice Joyce Abdulmalik that several messages were sent by Agbo to the schools, threatening to kill their students and teachers.

The witness narrated how the defendant was trailed and apprehended by the service.

He said his agency received petitions from three schools in Abuja in 2024 about text messages from some telephone numbers, with threat to kill students and teachers, and destroy property in the affected schools.

He said Agbo was found with a Techno android phone, allegedly used by the suspect, to send the threat messages.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Agbo was arraigned on March 17 on a two-count charge bordering on terrorism.

The DSS had filed the charge marked: FHC/ABJ/CR/06/2026, under the Terrorism (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022 and the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc) (Amendment) Act, 2024, against the defendant.

The security outfit, in the case summary, said the defendant is “standing trial on charges of using the instrumentality of his GSM numbers: 08124412783, 08069781274, 08105715028 and 09139681108 to send SMS to some schools in Abuja.”

The secret police listed Premier International School, The Regent Secondary School and Oakland International British School as the schools Agbo sent the threat messages.

The defendant was said to have, in the text messages, “threatened to attack the schools and kill both students and teachers,” stressing that it wouldn’t take them up to a minute to achieve that.

The DSS stated that the act constituted offences contrary to terrorism and cybercrime Acts.

Led in evidence by lawyer to the prosecution, Dr Calistus Eze, Jego said his team was instructed to investigate a petition received from Oakland International School on Nov. 28, 2024.

The witness said his team, in the course of investigation, deployed technology to track the suspect to Otukpo in Benue, where he was arrested and a mobile phone and a SIM card recovered from him.

Jego further told the court that the defendant was brought to Abuja and interviewed, following which he volunteered his statement in the presence of a lawyer from the Legal Aid Council of Nigeria (LACN).

The prosecution subsequently tendered the recovered mobile phone, a Techno android phone and petitions from the schools.

It also tendered a compact disc containing audio visual recording of the defendant’s interview and statement making sessions, and a copy of the defendant’s extra-judicial statement, among others.

The court admitted all the documents and items in evidence in the absence of objection from the defence lawyer, Hamza Dantani.

The defendant, who confirmed being familiar with the Techno android phone, however denied being the owner.

While being cross-examined by Dantani, Jego said his organisation got complaints from the schools through petitions.

He said the petitions did not reflect the name of the defendant and that the phone numbers used to send the SMS were provided by the petitioners, who also provided the text messages.

Jego said he would not know if the phone numbers belonged to the defendant, but that the defendant admitted that he was part of those that composed the text messages.

The witness added that Agbo was arrested in possession of the mobile phone recovered from him and that he admitted being part of those behind the text messages.

At the conclusion of the cross examination, Eze sought an adjournment to enable the prosecution bring more witnesses and exhibits, a request Dantani did not object to.

Justice Abdulmalik then adjourned the matter until May 12 for continuation of trial.

  • Alleged $12m fraud: EFCC withess contradicts self in SunTrust MD’s trial

Alleged $12m fraud: EFCC withess contradicts self in SunTrust MD’s trial

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC)’s witness, Hassan Dantani, on Friday contradicted himself in the ongoing trial of the Managing Director (MD), SunTrust Bank Ltd, Halima Buba, and her co-defendant, Innocent Mbagwu.

Dantani, the MD of Ashrab Corporate Forex and BDC Ltd, had earlier testified that in the statement he made at the EFCC’s office, he did informed and wrote that his BDC’s licence was revoked by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) in 2024.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that part of the contention is that as at the time the transaction of the $12 million was done by Buba and Mbagwu, the Executive Director/Chief Compliance Officer of SunTrust Bank, the licence of the BDC company used had been revoked by the CBN.

However, while being cross examined by Buba’s lawyer, Johnson Usman, SAN, on Friday on his statement, which the court had admitted as Exhibit D1, Dantani admitted he did not state it in the statement.

Dantani, who is the 3rd prosecution witness (PW-3) in the case, also confirmed to court that he is a member of BDC Traders Association, Wuse Zone 4 in Abuja.

“In the course of the investigation in the case, you made a statement to EFCC. In making the statement, did you tell EFCC that your BDC licence was revoked?” the lawyer asked and the witness said: “Yes, I did.”

Usman then called for Exhibit D1, which is Dantani’s statement.

“Look at Page 48 to 52 of Exhibit D1, is that your statement?” he asked and Dantani responded in the affirmative.

The lawyer then asked the witness to read out the statement which he wrote on May 9, 2025, especially where he said his BDC licence was revoked in 2024 by CBN, to the court’s hearing.

However, after a thorough check of his statement, Dantani said: “I did not see it.”

“Therefore, I will be correct to say you did not state so at EFCC based on Exhibit D1, that your licence has been revoked?” the lawyer asked, and the withess admitted.

The PW-3 also admitted that his company, Ashrab Corporate Forex and BDC Ltd, is still operational and had not been wound up at the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC).

The witness told the court that he did not have any dealing or transaction with Buba and Mbagwu.

He said Suleiman Ciroma, who testified in the case as PW-1, is a BDC operator and a colleague in the business.

The lawyer then asked: “As at the time you sent people to collect USD from SunTrust Bank, did you tell the people that when you go to collect the money, they should tell the person given the money that your BDC licence had been revoked?”

The witness, who admitted that he did not tell those who went to collect the money, said though as at that time, his licence was revoked, he had already reapplied in 2025 and it was still under processing, and that his “deposit of N500 million is still with CBN till today.”

Dantani told the court that neither Buba nor Mbagwu is signatory to any of his companies’ accounts either corporate or personal.

He told the court that he received the sum of 9.947 million dollars by the order of Suleiman Ciroma and that all the monies were paid into his company, Ashrab Energy and Oil Services Ltd.

He said the money was received in dollars while $7 million was collected in cash.

Dantani told the court that the whole money was transferred to Oceangate Engineering Oil and Gas Ltd, which is owned by the businesswoman, Aisha Achumugu.

He said the money was transferred from Ashrab Energy to Oceangate.

According to him, the decision to transfer the money from Ashrab Energy and Oil Services Ltd was my personal decision.

He said in the transaction, he made a profit of N9.8 million.

While also being criss examined by Mbagwu’s counsel, Mustapha Ibrahim, SAN, the witness also confirmed Exhibit D1 as his statement.

Dantani said the transaction leading to the case took place in March 2025.

He said he could not recall making any other statement at the EFCC’s office apart from Exhibit D1.

The witness also admitted that in the statement he made, he did not mention that he told Ciroma, his colleague, that his BDC licence was revoked.

“Confirm that during the entire transaction, you never physically went to SunTrust Bank office either in Lagos or Abuja to receive US dollars,” the lawyer asked and Dantani responded in affirmative.

The PW-3 agreed that to the best of his knowledge, he complied with CBN’s guidelines, the regulatory agency of the business.

The witness, who agreed that Ciroma was not standing trial in respect of the instant transaction, also told the court that he was not standing trial in any court regarding the transaction either.

Justice Nwite adjourned the matter until April 30 for continuation of trial.

NAN reports that Buba and Mbagwu are being prosecuted on money laundering offences to the tune of $12 million.

The duo, in a six-count charge, was alleged to have aided high-value cash transactions without routing them through a financial institution.

The offence is said to be contrary to Section 21(a), 2(1), and 9(1)(d) of the Money Laundering (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022, and punishable under Section 19(2)(b) of the same Act.

The defendants were, on June 13, arraigned by the anti-graft agency.

They, however, pleaded not guilty to the counts, and admitted to a N100 million bail with one surety, each in like sum.
