Introduction

Dr. Tunji Isiaka Adelabu (also referred to as Dr. Isiaka Tunji Adelabu) represents a distinguished figure in Nigeria’s polytechnic education system; a scholar-administrator whose career embodies the intersection of academic excellence, professional accounting practice, and institutional leadership. His appointment in August 2026 as the substantive Rector and Chief Executive Officer of the Federal Polytechnic, Ayede, Ogbomoso, Oyo State, marks a significant milestone both in his personal career trajectory and in the history of the young institution. As only the second substantive Rector since the polytechnic’s establishment in February 2021, Dr. Adelabu carries the weight of building upon a pioneering foundation while charting a course for sustained growth and academic excellence.

Early Life and Educational Foundation

While specific details of Dr. Adelabu’s early life remains private, his professional journey reflects a deep and sustained commitment to education and professional development. He pursued higher education in accountancy, a discipline that demands precision, analytical rigour, and unwavering ethical standards. The attainment of his doctoral degree established him as a scholar of considerable standing, equipping him with the research capabilities and intellectual depth that would later distinguish his academic contributions.

His choice of accountancy as a profession was not merely a career decision but a foundational commitment to financial integrity and institutional accountability. In Nigeria’s polytechnic system, where resources must be prudently managed to maximise educational outcomes, a leader with professional accounting credentials brings an invaluable perspective to institutional governance. The Chartered Accountant qualification, which Dr. Adelabu earned, represents one of the most rigorous professional certifications in the financial world, requiring mastery of complex accounting standards, taxation principles, auditing procedures, and financial management frameworks.

Professional Journey at Federal Polytechnic, Ede

Academic Career Progression

Dr. Adelabu’s professional home for the better part of his career was the Federal Polytechnic, Ede, in Osun State, one of Nigeria’s established polytechnic institutions. At this institution, he rose through the academic ranks to achieve the position of Chief Lecturer in the Department of Accountancy. In Nigeria’s polytechnic system, the rank of Chief Lecturer represents the pinnacle of the academic ladder, a position reserved for scholars who have demonstrated exceptional teaching ability, significant research contributions, and sustained service to their institutions.

As Chief Lecturer, Dr. Adelabu bore responsibility for advanced instruction in accountancy, mentoring both undergraduate and potentially postgraduate students. His role extended beyond classroom teaching to encompass curriculum development, academic quality assurance, and the advancement of knowledge in his discipline through research and scholarly publication.

Administrative Leadership

What distinguishes Dr. Adelabu’s career is the seamless integration of academic excellence with administrative acumen. At the Federal Polytechnic, Ede, he served in several administrative capacities, each representing a progressive elevation of responsibility and trust:

Head of Department: As Head of the Department of Taxation, Dr. Adelabu provided academic leadership for one of the institution’s core programmes. This role involved overseeing curriculum delivery, managing departmental staff, coordinating academic activities, ensuring programme quality, and representing the department in institutional decision-making forums.

Dean of School: His elevation to Dean of School expanded his purview to encompass broader academic oversight across multiple departments. As Dean, he was responsible for inter-departmental coordination, programme harmonization, academic policy implementation, and the strategic development of academic programmes within his school.

Dean of Students Affairs: At a time, he was the Dean of Students Affairs of Federal Polytechnic Ede between 2017 and 2019 with remarkable achievements on students administration and welfare.

Deputy Rector (Administration): This represented the culmination of his administrative career at Federal Polytechnic, Ede. As Deputy Rector (Administration), Dr. Adelabu served at the highest echelons of institutional management, involved in strategic planning, staff administration, policy formulation, and the coordination of the polytechnic’s entire administrative machinery. In this capacity, he gained invaluable experience in institutional governance, resource management, and the complex dynamics of leading a large educational organisation.

His role as Deputy Rector (Administration) also brought him into the public eye. In 2020, he represented the Rector in responding to sensitive institutional matters, demonstrating his ability to handle challenging situations with professionalism and diplomatic skill.

Scholarly Contributions and Research

Dr. Adelabu’s academic credentials are further validated by his research contributions to the field of accountancy and finance. One of his notable scholarly works is titled “Effects of Tax Planning Strategies on The Firm Value of Listed Manufacturing Firms in Nigeria: An Empirical Analysis,” co-authored with Abdul Ganiyu Salaudeen of the Department of Business Administration, Federal Polytechnic, Ede.

This research, published in 2025 in the International Journal of Latest Technology in Engineering, Management & Applied Science, examined the relationship between tax planning strategies and firm value among listed manufacturing companies on the Nigerian Exchange Group. The study employed rigorous empirical methodology, analysing secondary data from audited financial statements and utilising descriptive and inferential statistics. The research concluded that while tax planning strategies demonstrated an insignificant relationship with firm value, specific tax variables—including income tax rate, effective marginal tax rate, and effective tax rate, showed varying relationships with firm value.

The study’s recommendations; encouraging both individuals and corporations to adopt thorough tax planning policies, maximise credits and deductions, and consult knowledgeable tax professionals; reflect Dr. Adelabu’s commitment to bridging academic research with practical application. This scholarly output demonstrates his engagement with contemporary issues in accounting and finance and his ability to contribute meaningfully to the academic discourse in his field.

The Federal Polytechnic Ayede: Institutional Context

Establishment and Early Development

To fully appreciate the significance of Dr. Adelabu’s appointment, one must understand the institutional context. The Federal Polytechnic, Ayede, was established in February 2021 by the administration of the late President Muhammadu Buhari. The institution was strategically sited in Ayede village, Ogo-Oluwa Local Government Area of Oyo State, with the deliberate intention of de-congesting the nearby urban centre of Ogbomoso and bringing higher education opportunities to a rural community. The establishment was accompanied by a take-off grant of N2 billion to facilitate the institution’s initial development. Senator Adeseun, who facilitated the project, secured an additional N500 million for the polytechnic’s establishment, reflecting the political and community support that underpinned the institution’s creation. The Governing Council was inaugurated, chaired by Prof. Dakas C.J. Dakas, to provide strategic oversight.

The Pioneer Rector and Transition

The institution’s pioneer Rector was Engr. Dr. Taofeek Adekunle Abdul-Hameed, who laid the foundation upon which the polytechnic has been built. Under his leadership, the polytechnic commenced academic activities with the 2022/2023 session and began to establish its academic programmes, infrastructure, and administrative structures.

Following the conclusion of the pioneer Rector’s tenure, the institution entered a transitional period under acting leadership. In March 2026, the Chairman of the Governing Council, Hon Yakubu Datti, approved the appointment of Engr Dr. T. M. Adepoju as Acting Rector to avoid any leadership vacuum. During this period, the Council also appointed substantive Registrar and Bursar positions, forwarding nominees to the President for the appointment of a substantive Rector.

The Historic Appointment

Presidential Approval

On August 5, 2026, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu approved the appointment of Dr. Isiaka Tunji Adelabu as the substantive Rector and Chief Executive Officer of the Federal Polytechnic, Ayede. The appointment was formally announced by the institution’s Registrar, Mr. Akinlolu Akinpade, and made public by the Acting Director of the Centre for Information, Communication and Public Relations, Mr. Sunday Adepoju.

The appointment carries historic significance: Dr. Adelabu becomes only the second substantive Rector of the institution since its establishment in 2021. This places him in a select group of leaders entrusted with shaping the destiny of a young and growing institution. His appointment formally ends the period of acting leadership and provides the Federal Polytechnic, Ayede, with a substantive Rector to lead its next phase of institutional development.

The Registrar’s Statement

In announcing the appointment, Registrar Akinlolu Akinpde emphasized the confidence placed in Dr. Adelabu, noting that his “wealth of experience, academic contributions and administrative competence would contribute significantly to the continued growth and development of the Federal Polytechnic, Ayede”.The Registrar called upon the entire polytechnic community; management, staff, and students, to extend their full support and cooperation to the new Rector, emphasising that such support would be crucial to enabling Dr. Adelabu to advance the vision and mission of the institution. He also conveyed the goodwill of the Governing Council, management, staff, and students, wishing the new Rector “wisdom, strength and the capacity to provide purposeful leadership and take the polytechnic to greater heights”.

A Unique Skill Set

Dr. Adelabu brings to his new role a distinctive combination of qualifications that positions him uniquely for effective leadership. His experience as a Chief Lecturer and academic researcher ensures that he understands the core mission of the institution, teaching, learning, and knowledge creation. His administrative progression through Head of Department, Dean of School, and Deputy Rector (Administration) has equipped him with comprehensive experience in institutional governance at every level.

Areas of Expected Impact

Several areas are likely to benefit from Dr. Adelabu’s leadership:

Academic Programme Development: With his experience as Chief Lecturer and Dean of School, Dr. Adelabu is well-positioned to strengthen academic programmes, ensure curriculum relevance, and enhance the quality of instruction at Federal Polytechnic Ayede.

Financial Management and Institutional Administration: His background in accountancy and his experience as Deputy Rector (Administration) place financial management and institutional administration among the key areas where his expertise is expected to have a transformative impact.

Staff Management and Institutional Planning: His administrative experience provides him with familiarity with staff management, institutional planning, and the coordination of polytechnic programmes.

Infrastructure Development: As the institution continues to strengthen its physical infrastructure, Dr. Adelabu’s administrative competence will be crucial in managing development projects and expanding the polytechnic’s facilities.

Challenges and Opportunities

Dr. Adelabu assumes leadership at a pivotal moment. The Federal Polytechnic, Ayede, while young, has already established a foundation through the work of its pioneer Rector. The challenge now is to build upon this foundation, expand academic offerings, strengthen administrative structures, and consolidate the institution’s reputation within Nigeria’s technical and vocational higher education system.

The polytechnic sector in Nigeria faces broader challenges including funding constraints, infrastructure deficits, and the need to align curricula with industry demands. Dr. Adelabu’s experience in financial management and institutional administration positions him to navigate these challenges effectively. His professional accounting background suggests an appreciation for transparency, accountability, and prudent resource management—values essential for sustainable institutional development.

His appointment marks not merely a change in leadership but a new chapter in the institution’s development—a chapter that holds promise for students, staff, and the broader community that the polytechnic serves.
