‎Women in Music Day: Nigerian Artistes Push for Mentorship, Funding, Safe Spaces

    ‎By Oluwaseyi Oduneye-Ogunwomoju

‎Female musicians in Nigeria on Saturday joined their counterparts worldwide to mark the 2026 International Women in Music Day, highlighting persistent challenges and calling for greater inclusion in the industry.

‎In separate interviews, the artistes said thriving in a male-dominated space requires resilience, consistency and strong support systems.

‎Ashionye Ekemode, popularly known as Ashny, said female artistes often face underestimation and must work harder to prove themselves.

‎“Being in a male-dominated industry comes with challenges, from being underestimated to constantly having to prove your worth,” she said.

‎“I have learnt to stay focused on my craft, trust my voice and surround myself with supportive people. I believe in my music and vision, and that confidence has helped me break barriers.”

‎She identified funding, rejection and moments of hopelessness as common struggles for emerging artistes.

‎“To overcome these, I stayed determined and saved every penny to push my career,” she added.

‎Ashny noted that women are increasingly making bold strides in the industry but stressed the need for more intentional support.

‎“There is a need for mentorship, funding and platforms that deliberately uplift female talent. The industry must also create safe spaces where women feel respected and heard,” she said.

‎Similarly, Funmilayo Ayedogbon, known as ÒDÈRÉ, described her journey as both challenging and empowering.

‎“The music industry has long been male-dominated, meaning women often have to work twice as hard to be seen and respected,” she said.

‎“I have chosen to stand confidently in my identity, letting my work speak for itself.”
‎She cited limited access to funding and difficulty in building the right team as early challenges.

‎ÒDÈRÉ said consistency, faith and self-investment helped her overcome obstacles, adding that she created her own platform through her annual music event, “Odere Live.”

‎“There is more visibility and diversity among women in music now, but gaps remain, especially in production, sound engineering and executive roles,” she said.

‎She called for deliberate efforts by stakeholders to create inclusive opportunities and support young female talents early.

‎Also speaking, Doyinsola Akinola, popularly known as Doyinsola, said the journey has not been easy but noted steady progress.

‎“Funding and access to platforms were major challenges at the early stage, but I kept pushing,” she said.

‎“Social media has created diverse opportunities for promoting music.”
‎She added that female participation in the industry has improved significantly.

‎“We will keep encouraging one another. The sky is big enough for everyone,” she said.

‎In the same vein, Oladele Olajumoke, known as Bayonle, said the challenges of the industry have motivated her to work harder and remain confident.

‎“My early challenges included limited resources, lack of exposure and balancing creativity with industry expectations,” she said.

‎“I overcame them by staying consistent, believing in my talent and continuously improving my sound.”

‎Bayonle acknowledged increased visibility for women but stressed the need for more structured support.

‎“There should be stronger support systems, mentorship and more opportunities. Creating safe spaces and promoting female talent will boost participation,” she said.

‎The artistes advised aspiring female musicians to remain focused, embrace their uniqueness and persevere despite challenges.

NAFDAC unveils 24/7 call centre to boost its  regulatory functions and services

    –  The call centre would provide timely information on procedures, including product registration timelines and requirements, thereby facilitating trade – DG

    By Aderogba George

Abuja:  The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has established a 24-hour call centre in partnership with Interra Networks Ltd to strengthen the Agency’s regulatory services.

The Centre, which was commissioned on Friday,  would be managed by the telecommunications company, to handle complaints from customers on food, drugs and other regulated products in real time.

Speaking during the inauguration, NAFDAC Director-General, Mojisola Adeyeye, said the call centre would enhance the regulatory functions of the Agency and also Nigerians at large.

She noted that the platform would improve service delivery, given the agency’s engagement with thousands of customers across various sectors.

“We have thousands of customers dealing with food, drugs, vaccines, medical devices, water, cosmetics and herbal medicines.

“The services we render are such that customers may not always know what to do or where to go, especially when it comes to product registration.

“As we continue to digitise our processes, some customers may find it difficult to navigate the system, and we must meet their needs,” she said.

Adeyeye explained that the call centre would provide timely information on procedures, including product registration timelines and requirements, thereby facilitating trade.

“This timely registration will translate into increased trade, so the call centre is a great initiative for the country,” she added.

On sustainability, the NAFDAC boss emphasised the importance of financial discipline in maintaining the facility.

“If we cannot pay what it takes to sustain this project, then it will not be sustainable. Part of our quality management system involves financial responsibility,” she said.

She disclosed that upon assuming office in 2017, she inherited a debt of N3.2 billion, which had since been cleared through prudent financial management.

Adeyeye added that trained NAFDAC staff, including mid-level officers and directors, would support the call centre by handling escalated issues.

She further said the centre would help curb the circulation of substandard products by improving intelligence gathering.

“If someone calls in to report a suspicious product, whether food or drugs, we will act swiftly. The call centre will greatly enhance our surveillance efforts,” she said.

Adeyeye reiterated that the ban on alcohol in sachets and PET bottles below 200ml remained in force, stressing that there was no reversal of the policy.

Earlier, the Managing Director of Interra Networks Ltd, Mr Emeka Okafor, said the company specialises in Business Process Outsourcing Services (BPOS), providing customer engagement solutions for organisations.

“With specific reference to NAFDAC, the agency has a strong regulatory mandate and is also customer-focused.

“It has entrusted us to manage customer complaints and enquiries. We receive calls, respond to them and escalate unresolved issues to the agency,” he said.

Okafor assured that the call lines would be available 24/7, adding that no customer call would go unanswered.

He also noted that the company works closely with network providers to ensure reliable, high-capacity connectivity for seamless service delivery. (NAN) www.nannews.ng

Beach Wrestling Debuts at National Wrestling Championship Flag-Off in Yenagoa

    By Dianabasi Effiong

The fourth edition of the Gov. Douye Diri National Wrestling Classic has begun in Yenagoa with the introduction of beach wrestling for the first time in a national championship.

According to Promise Okotoko, the Nigeria Wrestling Federation (NWF) Media Assistant, the week-long tournament runs from March 25 to April 1, 2026.

The championship is being organised by the Bayelsa State Ministry of Sports Development in collaboration with the Nigeria Wrestling Federation (NWF).

Okotoko also stated that athletes for the championship, which spotlights emerging talents, were drawn from across Nigeria.

Okotoko said that the historic inclusion of beach wrestling — a fast-growing global variant of the sport — marked a major highlight of the championship, with athletes competing on sand in fiercely contested bouts

Team Cross River emerged as one of the standout performers in the new category, recording impressive victories early in the competition.

Deborah Edet Ubana of Cross River opened the action with a notable victory over Blessing Apeh of Rivers State in the women’s 60kg category, setting the tone for an intense day of competition

Cross River further strengthened its dominance as Inah Johnson displayed superior technique and athleticism to overpower his opponent, securing another win for the team.

Other notable performances included: Gabriel Ubana Edet — Gold medal, Men’s 55kg category; Mbasekei Lawrence Ubi — Bronze medal, 57kg category; and Agoro Florence Sunday — Bronze medal, Women’s 49kg category.

The Commissioner for Sports Development, Bayelsa State, Daniel Igali, described the introduction of beach wrestling as a significant step for the sport’s development in Nigeria.

According to Igali, beach wrestling has already been featured in the Youth Olympics and is being considered by the International Wrestling Federation for inclusion in future Olympic Games.

“This is an opportunity for Nigeria to key into a growing global sport and develop athletes that can compete internationally,” he said.

Also, the NWF Vice President, Chris Amkpila, said the importance of the tournament in talent discovery and athlete development.

He said that competitions such as the Governor Douye Diri Wrestling Classic provided a platform for young wrestlers to showcase their abilities and attract national and international scouts.

“We are going to identify the talents here, nurture them, and take them to the international level,” Amkpila said.

Also speaking, Lt.- Col. Okou Femedein Timipre, an international referee and Executive Secretary, International Military Sports Council, described the event as a strategic effort to popularise beach wrestling.

He noted that beach wrestling, though relatively new, held strong potential for global growth.

“This competition is helping to introduce beach wrestling to the public and promote it as a sport that can gain worldwide acceptance,” he said.

The Governor Douye Diri Wrestling Classic has grown steadily since its inception, with Bayelsa State continuing to position itself as a major hub for wrestling development in Nigeria and Africa.

The Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Musbau Babatunde, gave the assurance on behalf of Governor Seyi Makinde while receiving the newly appointed FAO Country Representative at the SSG Conference Room, Secretariat, Ibadan.

Prof. Babatunde said the administration remains focused on leveraging strategic partnerships with international development organisations such as the FAO to drive innovation, boost productivity, and achieve sustainable rural development.

He described agriculture as a key pillar of the state’s economic agenda, noting that collaboration with global bodies would support farmers with modern techniques, capacity building, and access to improved inputs.

The SSG also highlighted ongoing government interventions in the sector, adding that the state is open to further technical support and knowledge exchange to strengthen value chains and promote food sufficiency.

In his remarks, the Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development, Barrister Olasunkanmi Olaleye, said the administration has recorded significant progress in agriculture.

He listed key initiatives to include the promotion of mechanised farming through a 50 per cent tractorisation subsidy, distribution of improved seedlings and farm inputs, and provision of fertilisers at subsidised rates.

Other interventions, he said, include rehabilitation of rural farm roads, irrigation support programmes, and the strengthening of extension services to reach farmers at the grassroots.

Olaleye added that the government has intensified efforts in livestock development, fisheries support, youth engagement in agribusiness, and the promotion of agro-processing and value addition to reduce post-harvest losses and increase farmers’ income.

Cotonou:  Benin Republic has expressed appreciation to ECOWAS for a donation of 150,000 US dollars to support the country’s presidential election on 12 April 2026.

The cheque was presented to officials of the Benin Ministry of the Interior as part of assistance to Member States holding elections, under the provisions of the ECOWAS Supplementary Protocol on Democracy and Good Governance.

Receiving members of the ECOWAS Long-Term Election Observation Mission (LTEOM) to Benin, on Friday, 27th March, on behalf of the Minister, the Permanent Secretary, Eric Agossounon, assured that the financial support would be prudently utilised and commended ECOWAS for its solidarity with Benin.

Mr Serigne Ka, Acting Head of the ECOWAS Electoral Assistance Division (EAD), who led the delegation to the meeting, briefed the Permanent Secretary on the Mission’s objectives.

Accompanied by senior officials of the Ministry, including the police, immigration and other security agencies, Mr Agossounon also thanked ECOWAS member States – Nigeria, Ghana and Cote d’Ivoire, which supported and continue to assist Benin following the December 2025 foiled military coup attempt.

He said the Ministry of Interior was coordinating and also partnering with security agencies to provide adequate security and protection for citizens, polling officials and observers across the country’s 12 Administrative Districts through the National District Command Centres.

Mr Agossounon said the three-layered national security arrangement under the Joint Operational Order is headed by the Chief of Defence Staff, and involves the police as the lead agency during elections, which would intervene only at the invitation of authorised polling officials.

According to the Permanent Secretary, the National Guard and the military would only be involved where necessary, depending on the seriousness of the situation.

Following the beginning of political campaigns, he said that no violence had been reported so far. However, he identified the northern part of the country as a potential flashpoint, noting that adequate arrangements had been made to secure the area.

The two candidates cleared for the 12 April presidential contest are Mr Kossi Mbuèke Romuald Wadagni, the Finance Minister, who is the ruling presidential coalition’s flag-bearer, and the opposition candidate M Paul Hounkpè.

The meeting with the Interior Ministry officials is part of the LTEOM’s ongoing confidence-building consultations with Benin political stakeholders toward ensuring a credible election and consolidating democratic principles for regional peace and stability.##

  • Foreign investors express confidence in financial system, invested 28% in banks’ recapitalisation – CBN

Foreign investors express confidence in financial system, invested 28% in banks’ recapitalisation – CBN

Foreign investors express confidence in financial system, invested 28% in banks’ recapitalisation – CBN

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) says foreign investors have continued to express confidence in the country’s financial system by recent 28 per cent investment in the ongoing bank’s recapitalisation.

Mrs Sidi Hakama, acting Director, Corporate Communications and Investor Relations Department of CBN, disclosed this on Friday during CBN Special Day at the ongoing 37th Enugu International Trade Fair.

Hakama said that the ongoing bank recapitalisation with a deadline of March 31, 2026, had progressed positively.

“As of March 17, 2026, 32 banks have met new capital requirements, with about 28 per cent of recapitalisation investments coming from foreign sources, reflecting renewed confidence in Nigeria’s financial system,” she said.

She said that as part of the ongoing reform agenda, “the bank is transitioning to inflation targeting, which is a significant shift towards a more transparent, forward-looking, and rules-based monetary policy system anchored in long-term price stability”.

Hakama noted that the policy would also help shape market expectations and limit the disruptive effects of supply-side shocks.

“These reforms, anchored in orthodox monetary policy, institutional transparency, and market-driven foreign exchange frameworks, have earned the CBN the Central Bank of the Year 2026 Award from the Central Banking Awards Committee, London.

“The award is part of the Committee’s celebration of excellence among central banks worldwide.

“Collectively, these reforms have increased transparency, supported disciplined price discovery, and strengthened the transmission of monetary policy,” she said.

Hakama said that the apex bank’s fight against inflation had been steadfast, and the tight monetary policy stance it adopted had played a key role in reducing headline inflation.

She noted that there was a drop in inflation from a peak of 34.80 per cent in late 2024 to 15.06 per cent by the end of February 2026.

The director said, “We have almost a 200 per cent increase in capital and investment inflows between 2023 and 2025 into the country.

“And an increase in external reserves from less than $10 billion to $50.45 billion, all while maintaining our focus on achieving a single-digit inflation in the near term”.

She noted that the CBN’s priorities in 2026 would include: strengthening the banking system; ensuring durable price stability; modernising payments and promoting financial inclusion; fostering responsible fintech innovation; enhancing institutional capacity and operational efficiency; and deepening partnerships.

Hakama said that the apex bank remained dedicated to providing timely, credible, and reliable information, urging members of the public to rely solely on information disseminated through the bank’s official and verifiable communication channels.

Earlier, the President of Enugu Chamber of Commerce, Mr Nnanyelugo Onyemelukwe, commended the CBN for its policy measures to rebuilding stronger business confidence and ensuring stability in the economy particularly in the financial/banking sector.

“The chamber appreciates the CBN Governor, Dr Olayemi Cardoso and the entire management of the apex bank for participating in the fair and using it to reach out to Nigerians on the bank’s activities touching their lives positively,” Onyemelukwe said.

The theme of this year’s fair is: “Empowering Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMES) for Global Competitiveness”
