In its bid to modernise agricultural practices, boost crop yields, and ensure food security, the Oyo State Government has launched a comprehensive digital soil testing initiative across 100 communities.

The initiative, in collaboration with OCP Africa, aims to provide farmers with precise soil data to optimize their farming practices and increase productivity.

At the pilot scheme and official flag-off ceremony held at Onitiri Village, Ipapo/Iseyin Farm Settlement, Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development, Barr. Olasunkanmi Olaleye, explained that the program involves deploying advanced soil testing technology to analyze soil samples and educate farmers on best practices for high yields and profitability.

The initiative includes training and registration of farmers to gather data on soil health status, identify challenges, and tailor interventions.

Olaleye highlighted the government’s efforts to expand the state’s economy through agriculture and agribusiness, including empowering farmers with farm inputs.

He emphasized the importance of soil health in agricultural success and encouraged farmers to participate in the registration process.

The government has implemented measures to mitigate the effects of fuel subsidy removal on farmers, including the Sustainable Actions for Economic Recovery (SAfER) initiative.

He said: “As we gather here today, we recognise the crucial role that farmers play in ensuring food security and sustainable agriculture in the State. No farmer, no nation!

“And as we all know, soil is the foundation upon which the success of all agricultural endeavours rest. Healthy soil not only supports the growth of crops but also contributes to environmental sustainability and ecosystem resilience.

“Through the training and registration of farmers on soil health, we aim to empower agricultural communities with the knowledge and resources necessary to optimise soil fertility and productivity.

“By understanding the unique characteristics of the soil and implementing appropriate soil management practices, we can enhance crop yields; improve farm profitability and safe-guard long term viability of agricultural lands.

“The training and registration of farmers will enable us to gather valuable data on the soil health status of our farming areas, identify potential challenges, and opportunities and tailor interventions to address specific needs.

“By collaborating with OCP Africa, targeted strategies to promote soil conservation could be developed and the use of appropriate soil amendments could also be achieved.

“As we embark on this exercise to improve soil health and advance sustainable agriculture, I call upon all extension agents and farmers to actively participate in the registration process and to take advantage of the opportunities it offers.

“This present administration acknowledges the efforts of OCP AFRICA in striving to build a resilient and thriving agricultural sector that meets the needs of current and future generations.

“Let me say without equivocation that the recent removal of fuel subsidies has presented our farming communities with unprecedented challenges.

“The increased expenses for fuel and tractorisation are added burdens to our farmers already grappling with various other operational costs.

“Recognising these challenges, the Oyo State Government under the leadership of Engr. Oluseyi Makinde has swiftly moved to implement measures to mitigate the effect of this policy change. Thus, the birth of Sustainable Actions for Economic Recovery (SAfER) initiative.

“May I inform you that the state government has distributed maize grain to poultry farmers, feeds to fish farmers, pig farmers, free vaccination of cattle, distribution of feeds to sheep and goat farmers, distribution of inputs to crop farmers (like hybrid maize seeds, herbicides, pesticides, fertilisers which is ongoing as well as putting in place a subsidy on the use of tractor.

“The government has not relented in its commitment to increasing farm produce hence the need to embark on soil testing in 100 hundred communities.

‘We need to reaffirm our commitment as stakeholders to stewardship of the land and responsible agricultural practices.

” Together, we can harness the power of healthy soil to nourish our communities, protect our environment and secure a prosperous future for all.”

Participants, including farmers and stakeholders, expressed their belief that the initiative would address long-standing soil management issues and increase yields.

The President of All Farmers Association of Nigeria (AFAN) in Oyo State, Adewumi Abass Adekunle, lauded the initiative as timely and long overdue.

He maintained that farmers would be better equipped with requisite farming knowledge that would help them minimise risks and challenges associated with recording high yields at harvest time.

Earlier in her welcome address, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, Mrs. Christiana Abioye, said the initiative was crucial to sustainable and profitable agricultural practice.

And the efforts geared towards food security in the state, describing it as the future of agriculture.

She said: “It is with great pleasure and honor that I stand before you today as we embark on this vital journey of soil testing, training of farmers on Good Agricultural Practices (GAP), and registering farmers into a comprehensive database.”

Oyo State Acting Governor, Barr. Bayo Lawal, has stated that the administration of Governor ‘Seyi Makinde will continue to prioritise efforts that will enhance the status of the royal system in the state and make it a worthy reference point for other South-West states.

Barr. Lawal said this during the elevation Otun Olubadan of Ibadanland, High Chief Senator Rashidi Ladoja, to a beaded-crown-wearing Oba in line with the amended Olubadan Chieftaincy Declaration.

The event was held at the Olubadan-in-Council Chamber of the new Olubadan Palace, Oke Aremo, Ibadan.

The Acting Governor maintained that the occasion put an end to all the controversies surrounding the issue of beaded crown in Ibadanland and has shown that the traditional system is capable of reinventing itself without external interference.

Presenting the Staff of Office and the Certificate to Oba (Senator) Rashidi Ladoja, the Acting Governor congratulated him on the acceptance of the beaded crown.

He said: “On behalf of the governor of the state, I greet the people of Ibadan.

“We thank God that, today, all the controversies surrounding the issue of the beaded crown have come to an end even without external interference.

“I want to use this avenue to also thank the CCII President-General, the Aare Musulumi of Oyo, Edo and Delta and other dignitaries here present.

“Ibadan, as we all know, is a city of elites. If the city is peaceful, we believe the entire Yorubaland will be peaceful.

“In Oyo State, we believe that if we want to make progress, there must be little changes in how things should be done. Part of it is what we are doing here today. We want the royalty, monarchy to be well-founded and well-established in Oyo State.

“We believe if this is established in Oyo State, it will be a reference point in the entire Yorubaland.

“So, on behalf of the Governor of Oyo State, I have the opportunity of presenting the instrument of office to HRM Oba Rashidi Ladoja, the Otun Olubadan of Ibadanland, following the conferment of Obaship on him by His Imperial Majesty, Oba Akinloye Owolabi Olakulehin 1, the Olubadan of Ibadandland.

“In exercise of the powers conferred on me by Cap 28 Volume 1 of the Chiefs Law of Oyo State of Nigeria, 2000, and any other powers in that behalf, I confer on you the title of Royal Majesty, Oba Senator Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja, the Otun Olubadan of Ibadanland.”

Shortly after receiving the beaded crown, staff of office and the certificate of office, the newly-elevated Oba, Senator Ladoja thanked Governor Makinde and the state government for their efforts in ensuring that peace reigns in Ibadanland.

He equally thanked the indigenes of Ibadanland for their support, praying for the progress of Ibadanland and Oyo State.

The Minster of Sports, Sen. John Enoh, has decried Nigeria’s disappointing performance at the ongoing Paris Olympics, stressing the need for repositioning of the sport sector for better performance in future events.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Enoh said this on Friday in Paris, while briefing Nigerian journalists at the event.

He said the nation should learn from the Paris experience and plan better by giving the sector priority attention.

The minister also identified the deteriorating level of infrastructure and poor funding of sports in the country as challenges facing the ministry.

“How much this challenges us, for me, I wish I was speaking with you with records of results and outcomes that are better.

“Let us turn what has happened to positive for Nigerian sports, there are lots of takeaways even though we didn’t get the medals.

“The basketball team achieved what has never been achieved before, in long jump, we may not have won any medal, but we had three Nigerians taking part in the finals.”

The minister expressed worries with the commitment and the patriotism of some of the athletes at the event.

He pointed out that in preparing for the competition, many variables responsible for impressive performance at the Olympics were not followed.

“Olympics requires many variables, talking about the training and preparation, how much of it took place.

“The commitment of the athletes and their level of patrotism, I’m by no means trying to drag any of the athletes, as young men and women, they have done well for their country.

“I remain proud of our athletes despite the outcome of the Olympics, it is not easy. In the word of people in those days, the fun is not in winning but in participation.”

NAN recalls that Nigeria had yet to win a medal as at the time of filing this report even though it was competing in12 events with 88 athletes. C(NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

Sports academies can nurture grassroot talents to stardom-Ex-international

    By Olatunde Ajayi

A former Nigerian international footballer, Dr Felix Owolabi, has described sports academies as veritable tools for nurturing raw talents into global sports professionals.

Owalabi stated this on Thursday in Ibadan, at the closing of a special August football camp for young talents organised by Femben PrepToPro Football Academy.

The ex-Green Eagles player and 1980 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) winner further described sports academy as a beacon of hope in shaping the future of sports development in Nigeria.

He said that the Femben PrepToPro Football Academy came at the right time when Nigeria was struggling in the development of its football and other areas of sports.

Owalabi noted that a great percentage of great players all over the world and generations of past legends came through grassroots sports development programmes.

“We have been clamouring for grassroots development; the obvious reason is that past football legends were able to get to the top because they started through such setups.

“The gradual disappearance of school sports competitions and other veritable sports programmes where grassroots talents could be discovered, groomed, and polished for future opportunities is worrisome.”

He commended the convener of the academy for his contribution to grassroots sports.

“I must commend the convener of Femben Football Academy for his dedication and commitment to the development of grassroots sports in Nigeria.

“We must embrace this kind of programme and have it spread all over the country among school children, particularly during the holidays and weekends.

“Doing so will lead to the discovery of the greatest and best talents that can represent Nigeria in both local and international games, “he said.

The guest speaker at the event, Coach Femi Amusan, charged the participants to set a projection of where they want to be in the next five years.

Amusan stated that through discipline, dedication, and determination, they would achieve their dreams.

One of the participants, Monjolaoluwa Are, said that the football camp gave participants the privilege to relate to internationally recognised licensed experienced coaches and ex-professional footballers.

Are, who doubles as the camp captain, added that the football camp was impactful and embedded with both on and off-field training.

The convener of Femben PreToPro Football Camp, Coach Femi Olatunji, said that the aim of the academy was to properly develop and prepare talents for professionalism.

Olatunji stated that it has always been a challenge for some talents to maximise opportunities to become accomplished athletes due to a lack of training to cope with the technicality and tactical aspects of the game.

“It is all about preparation for professionalism; we prepare the participants for what we expect that they will meet in the journey of football.

“We have been doing this since 2018 at our headquarters in South Africa; the August edition is the third one in Nigeria, “he said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that a total  of 25 participants graduated from the August edition of the football camp. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

    Oyo State records peaceful protest

    By Adewale Owoade

The Commissioner of Police in Oyo State, Ayodele Sonubi, says the nationwide protest against hunger has been peaceful in the state.

Sonubi told newsmen the protesters conducted themselves in a peaceful manner while exercising their rights, agitating for their demands without any hindrance.

He assured that the police and other security agencies would continue to provide an enabling environment for peaceful protests, adding that the government is aware of their demands.

The protest, which started under Iwo Road Bridge, proceeded through Agodi-Gate, University College Hospital, and terminated at Mokola Roundabout.

One of the protest leaders, Oyo State Coalition Against Hunger, Ademola Aremu, said the protest is to call the attention of government to the high cost of living.

“Our protest has been peaceful; we don’t have guns, the only thing that we have is our placards and banners.

“We are saying end to hunger and poverty, that is why we are here,” Aremu said.

Also speaking, Mr Yomi Ogunlola, a legal practitioner, who said the youths are expressing their grievances, praised them for conducting themselves well and adhering to the designated areas.

Ogunlola commended the government for providing security for the protesters and the security agencies for their adequate provision.

“I have come out to sympathise with them on this noble cause and we believe that by registering their grievances, perhaps government will have a rethink, so I’m here in solidarity.

“I want to commend the Nigerian government for what they have done in providing security for the protesters to carry out their protest peacefully.

“Here in Oyo State it is only the protesters that are on the street and they have conducted themselves very well and limited themselves to what government has allowed and the court judgment that restricted them to particular areas,” he said. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)
