Pa Akinkunmi Burial: The Wait, The Call and The Response

Pa Akinkunmi Burial: The Wait, The Call and The Response
     By ‘Dayo Adu
The Yorubas in their norms have a way of instilling messages in their clans to engender oneness, inclusivity and discourage over-reliance on family therefore the popular mantra : “ẹni ọmọ sin l’obimọ” (only he who’s given a befitting burial has children).
This has over the years sharpened the horizon of people in the race that, collective and communal living is the best, hence the need to collectively work for the good and progress of all, with the mindset that when death comes calling, anyone, not necessarily ones biological offspring will swiftly rise to accord the dead a befitting burial.
It’s also the belief of the Yoruba people that whenever a person dies, he or she is not finally rested until the body is committed to mother earth, reasons the instructions from some old parents who dole out warnings that” they should not be embalmed or kept in the mortuary, saying they should be buried immediately their breathe ceased”.
From findings, it’s not a taboo that their passing is unworthy of the talk-of-the-town celebration laced with pomp and ceremonies but an attempt to attain early rest in the land beyond.
Their request, though may be out of their wish of final rites, also depicts a parent’s love and concern for their children to cover up their economic status so as not to land them in debts and disgrace that may accompany the preparation for the lavish ceremony.
Also, the psychological trauma, the children often faced having the knowledge of their dead being kept in the Morgue without any burial plan is undescribable.
Nigerians became worried, when the corpse of this national hero seemed to be abandoned in the Morgue, after several months of waiting with itching ears to hear the government’s announcement as nothing was forthcoming.
Many questions were posed as to what could have caused the delay  knowing well that government have the wherewithal to articulate the rite of passage within 24hours.
Why are the children helpless? What are the church , the Southwest governors and those who made heartwarming promises of befitting burial to the late designer of the national flag doing?
Different groups, individuals made outcry to the federal and state governments to remember their promises and pledges to give the London trained Electrical Engineer, who at age 22 in his ingenuity gifted Nigeria the green-white-green flag , a national symbol of unity which the nation has not have the cause to change unlike the national anthem.
Responses after my piece entitled: Pa Taiwo Akinkunmi, A Hero Abandoned in the Morgue” to sensitise the government about the continued stay of the man in the morgue and the dilemma of the implications of abandoning such a national figure.
Almost on daily basis I get accosted by people expressing all manner of fear in their minds , chief among is how will he be remembered when his death clocks one year and he’s still not buried?
They expressed worried and did not want pa Akinkunmi’s case to be like that of the Late Dr. Joseph Wayas, former second republic senate president who died in London, over two years, nine months ago and yet to be buried.
At the 10th month of pa Akinkunmi’s stay in the morgue, the National Institute for Cultural Orientation, NICO, on June 8, 2024 reacted on the instance of trending news on social media platforms over the seeming neglect of the burial arrangement of the late national hero.
The agency through Executive Secretary/CEO , Otunba Biodun Ajiboye, assured the family and concerned Nigerians that their cry had reached the government and promised to take up a major role and responsibility in coordinating and collaborating with other agencies that may be necessary in giving a befitting burial to this hero.
According to Otunba Ajiboye, “It is a prominent part of our culture as a people not to neglect our heroes.
“Characteristically, our culture does not ignore this kind of cry. To which extent, the cry of the family of Late Pa Michael Taiwo Akinkunmi, the man who designed the Nigerian flag has come to the attention of the federal government and
“NICO has compassionately, considered taking up a major role and responsibility in coordinating and collaborating with other agencies that may be necessary in giving a befitting burial to this our fallen hero”
“As we know, the flag remains one of the greatest tangible heritages of this country, and NICO has the mandate to promote both tangible and intangible cultural heritage”.
From Pa Michael Taiwo Akinkunmi’s case, It’s now on record that organising a state burial could take up to a year and more which is now a shift from the usual short term arrangement practice
To refresh our memories, Former First lady,  Stella Obasanjo, former Vice President Alex Ekwueme, former Ondo state governor Rotimi Akeredolu,SAN,  Gani Fawehinmi, SAN,  former Governor of Eastern Nigeria, Chief Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu,  and Ex-Abacha Deputy, Oladipo Diya, all got prompt befitting burial rites within few days and months.
On Friday 2nd August, 2024, The Oyo State Governor, Engineer ‘Seyi Makinde, in his usual character, again, scored the golden goal in history by releasing funds to the family so as to set the burial arrangements in motion.
This ingenious gesture by Gov Makinde, put a halt to the endless wait by  Nigerians, as the family,  in few days, rolled out a-three-day programme of activities slated for 4th – 6th September , 2024
Although, a year has passed and the body of the late Akinkunmi patriarch will be buried in few days time , healing has come the way of the helpless children and the message of reward for patriotism has again being passed that no individual’s contribution to the unity of Nigeria will go unnoticed and unrewarded.
People who share the same thoughts and belief with the late designer of the national flag who at every October 1st annual celebration of the nation’s independence Day, whenever speaks to the press, always admonish the citizens, especially the youths to “Think of what they can do for the country and not what the country can do for them.”
For this admonition to take it’s foot in the subconsciousness of the active younger generation, government needs to up its game by improvising on its recognition and rewarding system, including prompt organisation of state burial for deserving Nigerians with exceptional services and contributions to the country.

Baptist Seminary advocates sanity among clerics for societal transformation

    By Olatunde Ajayi

The Nigerian Baptist Theological Seminary (NBTS), Ogbomoso, has called for sanity amongst gospel ministers to guarantee the nation’s transformation.

Its President, Rev. Stephen Ayankeye, made the call in Ogbomoso on Monday during a news conference to announce the forthcoming 2024 NBTS Ministers’ Conference.

The conference, with the theme, “The Gospel Minister and His Call”, is scheduled for Sept. 9 to Sept. 12.

Ayankeye says the theme is apt, following Nigeria’s current situation where some gospel ministers demonstrate a lack of understanding of what it means to be called into ministry.

He said gospel ministers were expected to know the purpose of the call and how to sharpen it to promote the gospel.

“The result of the ignorance is the disgraceful behaviour found among some pastors.

“A cursory look into this theme will help in restoring ministerial sanity that can result in the transformation of society,” he said.

Ayankeye urged political officeholders and others in government to be more intentional in ensuring the restoration of economic, social and educational vibrancy in Nigeria.

He enjoined the government to direct more efforts to ensure the security of lives and property for the people to experience a conducive atmosphere to face their work in peace.

“The citizenry should also be law abiding and be praying for our leaders regularly. Time has come when everyone should work hard to restore the glory of Nigeria,” he said.

According to him, the conference will help gospel ministers to be further equipped and reinvigorated for godly living and effective ministries.

Ayankeye said the conference, embedded with a continuing education programme, would help to update the academic and professional knowledge of gospel ministers.

This, he said, would also sharpen their ministerial skills and provide them with opportunities for fellowship and denominational promotion.

He listed the following as highlights of the convention: African praise, hymn singing, instrumentals, messages, Bible teachings, group discussions, intercessory prayers, witnessing and football matches.

The conference is an annual programme for Baptist Ministers of the Nigerian Baptist Convention. The year 2024 edition marks the 64th annual gathering of Baptist Ministers.

Scholars Dismiss Education Minister’s Claim About Fake Certificates From Universities In The Republic Of Benin, Togo.

    By Adewale Owoade

Recently, the Nigerian Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman, announced that degrees earned from universities in the Republics of Benin and Togo would be void.

This announcement has raised serious concerns among students, parents, and educational institutions.

In a statement released and signed by Gabriel Kona, an education consultant and president of Nigerian Lecturers in Benin, on behalf of stakeholders criticize the minister’s action, calling it false and misleading information that does not accurately portray these universities or the certificates they award.

The minister’s announcement followed a report from a Nigerian investigative journalist that revealed the existence of a racketeering network that facilitated the acquisition of a certificate from ESGT University in Benin Republic.

This report raised concerns about the validity of these certificates and led to a broader inquiry by the Nigerian government.

Premised on this, the Nigerian education minister stated that only five universities in Benin and three in Togo are accredited to award degrees, and that degrees obtained from other institutions in these countries are invalid, throwing a lot of past and present students in turmoil, thus threatening their academic and vocational pursuit.

“However, a thorough investigation and contact with the official site and office of the ministry of education in Benin and Togo republics into the validity of these claims has revealed significant inaccuracies in the minister’s statement.

“The Ministry of Higher Education in the Republic of Benin has officially published a list of 95 accredited institutions authorized to award Licence (Bachelor degrees). Here is the link…

    https://enseignementsuperieur.gouv.bj/actualite/show/ACT-rzmG4X2a-870FE0A,” the statement reads.

The release reads further: “This list includes a wide range of private and public universities that are fully recognized and accredited by the Beninese government. The claim that only five universities in Benin are accredited is therefore incorrect and misleading.”

Similarly, the Republic of Togo has accredited several universities, contrary to the minister’s statement that only three are recognized. The misinformation provided by the Nigerian Minister of Education has caused unnecessary panic and distress among students and parents, many of whom have invested significant resources in their education abroad.

Mr Kona further stressed that “in Benin Republic, all private universities are called “EPES” (Ecole Privée d’Enseignement Supérieur), which means Private School of Higher Learning in English.

All EPES are duly authorized to run Licence (Bachelor) and Master Degree Programs; and all accredited EPES are published in a Handbook tagged “Guide d’orientation” in English “Orientation Guide” every year. (downloadable at https://enseignementsuperieur.gouv.bj/actualite/show/ACT-rzmG4X2a-870FE0A).

This list of accredited schools are also forwarded to the Nigeria Embassy in Cotonou and the Federal Ministry of Education so that students can verify if their schools of interest are accredited or not.

    For international students like Nigerians, the basic entry requirements are O’Level Result (including Mathematics & English);

The Ibadan College of Medicine Alumni Association (ICOMAA) Worldwide, has urged other alumni to support government efforts at uplifting the education sector.

Prof. Olayinka Omigbodun, the immediate past provost of the College of Medicine, University of Ibadan (CoMUI), made the appeal at an event in her honour in Ibadan.

The event was organised by the Abib Olamitoye Foundation and founded by a former President of ICOMAA Worldwide, Dr Abib Olamitoye.

“But I must say that I had an excellent team of people.  Particularly, I must commend the Deputy Provost, Prof Fatai Adeniyi, a professor of physiotherapy.

“Another aspect that I must say was very helpful was the fact that we have an excellent group, the Ibadan College of Medicine Alumni Association.

“Our members are all over the world. We had 100 per cent support from our alumni.

“I think that the way to go when you have a problem of funding in any institution is to get the alumni on board.

“I feel relieved because I think we tried our best. We have a lot of landmark achievements that God gave us.”

The new Provost of the College, Prof. Temidayo Ogundiran, acknowledged the limitations in government funding of education and stressed the vital role of alumni in sustaining institutional legacies.

“In the University of Ibadan, especially in College of Medicine, we already know that different groups of alumni of the college have been doing a lot to support the college administration in pursuing its goals.

“So, we need the alumni and we should recommend this to all institutions in Nigeria. But each institution should liaise with their alumni and bring them on board so that they can contribute to the growth of these institutions.

“There is nowhere that government can fund all of education, especially Tertiary to be frank. So, we need other people, philanthropists, sponsors and more importantly alumni to contribute to the running of their alma mater,” Ogundiran stated.

Prof. Emmanuel Otolorin, President of ICOMAA Worldwide, noted that while the government bears the primary responsibility for managing institutions, alumni can provide crucial support.

“It is the responsibility of the government to manage is own institutions not to pass them on to other entity.

“Alumni are there, we are trying to help as much as we can, but we cannot carry the whole burden,” Otolorin emphasised.

Dr Abib Olamitoye, the event organiser, praised Prof. Omigbodun’s dedication and achievements, expressing appreciation for her progress during her tenure.

“She has done a lot for the college, and invariably for the University, so we want to use this occasion to really let her know that we love her.

“We appreciate her and we treasure the achievements she has been able to make during her tenure,” Olamitoye said.

In attendance at the event were Prof. Akinyinka Omigbodun, husband of the honoree; Prof. Mary Ogundiran, wife of the new provost; and Mrs. Olubunmi Olamitoye, wife of the organiser, among others. (NAN)

Nigeria needs new mapping to address insecurity – Surveyors

    By Olatunde Ajayi

The Nigerian Institution of Surveyors (NIS), has called for new mapping of the country, to address insecurity.

NIS President, Dr Matthew Ibitoye, made the call at the 4th NIS Lasis Ali Memorial Lecture, on Tuesday in Ibadan.

Ibitoye, a fellow of NIS, said that the maps in the country were done since 1965 and were obsolete, and could not meet the present realities.

He urged the Federal Government to collaborate with NIS to carry out new mapping of the country as the step would help the security agents to tackle insecurity.

Ibitoye said that urgent action must be taken to produce new maps with modern technology for the country to win the war against insurgency, banditry, kidnapping and other crimes.

“The best mapped country is the best developed country. We have been advocating that Nigeria should be mapped with latest technology for long.

“The map we are using in Nigeria was produce in 1965 when many of us had not been born. This means we are giving wrong data to the people, and our communities are expanding everyday.

“We have what it takes as professionals to track some of these insurgents. The technology in surveying profession has gone beyond using old physical approach to curb banditry.

“We are ready to partner with government in the war against insurgency,” he said.

The NIS president decried the lack of interest in surveying by prospecting students in Nigeria, saying graduates were not interested in being lecturers in surveying departments of Nigeria universities because of poor renumeration.

“We have more than 10 universities offering surveying apart from polytechnics in states within South-West, Nigeria, but some of them don’t have more than two to four lecturers in the whole department.

“We are working to see that we encourage our surveyors, especially those with higher academic qualifications, to go into lecturing, so that we can produce more qualified surveyors for the country,” he said.

The Guest Lecturer at the event, Barrister Lanre Agoro, urged surveyors to sensitise the public to dangers inherent in the outright sale of their landed properties.

Agoro added that surveyors in countries such as France and other developed nations, always encouraged leasing of properties for economic development and to secure future for the unborn generations.

Speaking on the theme: “Empowering the Nigerian Economy: Grassroots Solutions to Counter Naira Devaluation”, he urged government to deploy strong political will in controlling trade deficit, monetary policies and inflation to boost the nation’s economy.

Agoro decried high taste for imported products at the detriment of locally produced products by Nigerians, saying it had contributed to the devaluation of the Naira.

Earlier, the NIS Chairman in Oyo, Surv. Waheed Lamidi, urged citizens to avoid accepting back-dated survey plans from quacks in surveying profession.

Lamidi said that the qualified members of NIS could be recognised through their unique registration number and seal.

He said that the lecture was organised in honour of an icon, Surv. Lasis Lasupo Ali, who distinguished himself as one of the past fellows of NIS and president, who upheld high ethical standards of the profession.

The Acting Governor of Oyo State, Mr Bayo Lawal, says Governor Seyi Makinde’s administration will continue to promote and support cultural and traditional heritages in the state.

Lawal stated this at the grand finale of the 2024 Isese Festival with the theme “Isese Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow,” held at the Lekan Salami Sports Complex, Ibadan.

The Acting Governor, who hailed the festival as being colourful and rich entertainment content, said the state government has also been working hard to develop culture and tourism and attract more investors to expand the economy of the state.

“In Oyo State, we asked for the cooperation of all religious leaders including Christians, Muslims and the Isese faithful, and we are happy as a government that you are all identifying with this government.

“Isese Day is not for tradition alone but for culture, entertainment and other features. Another thing that makes it meaningful is the fact that through its cultural tourism angle, it can help to increase our IGR.

“So, we are not just engaging in tradition for nothing, but for the fact that it is contributing to boost the economy of the state.

“Since this government started, you would realise that we have not been joking with tourism. An example is how we are promoting Iyake Lake at Ado Awaye, Bower’s Tower in Ibadan and other tourist destinations in the state.

“All of these are in a bid to make sure that our culture and tradition in Yorubaland don’t go down the drain.”

In his address, the Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Dr Wasiu Olatunbosun, charged Isese adherents to support the government and continue to promote unity and harmony among themselves and other residents.

Earlier in their address of welcome, the Aare Isese of Oyo State, Aare Omikunmi Egbelade and Araba/Olu Isese of Ibadanland, His Eminence Araba Ifalere Odegbola II, appreciated Gov. Makinde for not only acknowledging the importance of their faith, but also reinforcing the spirit of unity and respect among the diverse religious and cultural communities.

The event had in attendance the Deputy Chief of Staff, Hon Fola Oyekunle, Commissioners and other top government functionaries. (NAN)

Sango Festival Promotes Culture, Tourism as part of Oyo State Economy drive – Ag. Gov. Lawal

    By Adewale Owoade

Ag. Governor of Oyo State, Bayo Lawal, says Gov Seyi Makinde’s administration is prepared to strengthen and promote the culture and tourism sector to achieve his vision of diversifying the state’s economy.

Lawal stated this at the closing ceremony of the 2024 World Sango Festival held at the Festival Arena, Aafin Oyo.

He noted that the designation of the festival as a UNESCO Heritage was a great achievement for the state.

“Today’s event is to mark the World Sango Festival. As you know that Sango is and was one of our leading spiritual gods.

“He was an Alaafin in Oyo Kingdom and he became a god, who is being worshipped by many adherents to date. That has become an important part of our culture.

“But, fundamentally, you will agree with me that culture and tourism are intertwined and interrelated and what we are doing today is an encapsulation of culture and tourism.”

Lawal further said the festival was also important because of it’s potential to generate revenue for the state.

“The benefit of this event is that it adds more to our revenue generation drive; adds fun to our environment and tells us about history and our culture.

“We are happy that UNESCO has recognised the Sango Festival as part of the heritage that must be protected and observed.

“And, to this end, Oyo State will lend stronger support to that recognition. Whatever is required to lift this culture higher, the Governor Makinde-led administration is ever prepared to do it.

“We know that for us to have distinguished personalities among us this afternoon eloquently tells the history that Sango is one of the recognised gods worldwide, Lawal stated.

Minister for Art, Culture and Creative Economy, Hannatu Musawa, at the event, affirmed that President Tinubu administration’s remained committed to safeguarding and promoting Nigeria’s cultural heritage.

“The government is “determined to support initiatives that protect traditions, encourage cultural expressions, and harness the power of our heritage for the benefit of all Nigerians.

“This recognition by UNESCO is not just a milestone for Oyo State, the Yoruba people, and the Kingdom of Oyo but a victory for Nigeria.

“It affirms my Ministry’s commitment to the global significance of our rich traditions, our stories, our values, and our way of life.

“This tells the world that the Sango Festival is not just an event, but a living testament to the vibrancy and resilience of our culture,” she said

Don’t force a career on your child – Association urges parents

    By Suleiman Shehu

Parents and guardians have been advised to stop enforcing careers on their children and wards but allow them to exhibit their potential for the nation’s development.

The Association of Muslim Women in Business and Profession (The Criterion), Oyo State District, gave the advice at a lecture organised in Ibadan on Sunday.

The association’s Global Amirah, Alhaja Sururah Abdulmojeed, said it was better to guide and engage rather than enforce their decision as parents on the children’s chosen careers and future.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the lecture is entitled, “Pathway to Career Development of Nigeria: Engaging Youths Positively”.

Abdulmojeed said many parents had wrongly chosen careers for their children without considering their potential and ability to cope therein, thus leading to academic failure.

“Parent should be able to identify the weaknesses and strengths of their children and guide them appropriately and not to enforce,” she said.

Also, the Amir of the Association of Muslim Men in Business and Profession (The Companion), Malam Nureen Sakariyau, called on parents to allow their children to pursue positive careers as they grow.

According to Sakariyau, parents should erase the mindset that a child can only be successful by studying medicine, law or engineering.

“Each child has his or her potential and as parents, we need to relate with them to find the potential, unlock it and the child will do well,” he said.

He, however, urged the children to also listen to their parents because they had seen it all and understood what they, as children, wouldn’t understand.

“They should allow their parents to guide them because they have seen it all and can lead them to a good career progression,” Sakariyau said.

The guest lecturer at the event, Malam Lawal Yusuf, urged parents to imbibe good morals and integrity in their children, engaging them in their overall development.

“Be cautious of things that will discourage them from achieving their goals; don’t focus only on their Western education, but also inculcate good morals for their behavioural progression.

“Study the children’s uniqueness and show them the way because many things shield them from the pathway of development as they grow in life,” Yusuf said.

The lecturer identified age and maturity as major factors determining a child’s career development.

He then urged parents to engage positively to prevent them from being distracted on getting to higher institutions. (NAN)
