FLOWERBUDNEWS: Nigeria’s Prof. Mojisola Christian Adeyeye, the Director General of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), has been conferred with the prestigious Special African Leadership Commendation Award.

Prof. Adeyeye bagged the honour at the 16th African Business Leadership Awards (ABLA) in London, United Kingdom, for transforming Nigeria’s pharmaceutical regulatory system into a global benchmark.

The award ceremony, which brought together heads of state, ministers, parliamentarians, and Africa’s most distinguished business and public sector leaders, was held at the historic Cholmondeley Room and Terrace, House of Lords, Palace of Westminster, London, on 3 July 2026.

The recognition, conferred by the Global Advisory Board of the African Leadership Organisation (ALO), the publisher of African Leadership Magazine, was awarded following a rigorous, merit-based screening and vetting process spanning several years, during which Prof. Adeyeye’s leadership trajectory and institutional impact were independently tracked and assessed by an international panel.

The award tells a story that every Nigerian should know. When Prof. Adeyeye assumed office as Director General of NAFDAC on 30 November 2017, she inherited an agency in deep institutional distress, a statement on the historic event disclosed.

    It recall further:
The agency carried a debt burden of over ₦3.2 billion. Between 70 and 80 per cent of the equipment across NAFDAC’s seven laboratories was non-functional.

There were no vehicles for inspection. Staff morale had collapsed under repeated industrial strikes. No Director had a NAFDAC-issued laptop. Digitisation was non-existent. And on the World Health Organisation’s Global Benchmarking scale of one to four, NAFDAC was rated below Level One. One international observer had described the agency bluntly as a “good-for-nothing agency.”

Less than a decade later, the same agency stands as one of the most credible regulatory bodies on the African continent.

Through fiscal discipline alone, Prof. Adeyeye cleared the inherited debt of over ₦3.1 billion within her first year in office, discovering in the process that ₦200 million of that debt was fictitious. She procured over 150 utility vehicles, invested over ₦7 billion in laboratory equipment, and equipped more than half of NAFDAC’s 2,000-plus workforce with laptops and desktop computers.

She digitised 90 per cent of the agency’s regulatory processes, instituted standard operating procedures across all functions, and pursued ISO 9001 certification, which NAFDAC achieved by 2019 and has maintained through recertification to date.

The global recognition that has followed is remarkable by any standard.

NAFDAC attained WHO Global Benchmarking Maturity Level 3 in March 2022, a distinction held by only 35 per cent of regulatory agencies worldwide, and was successfully re-benchmarked in June 2025.

The Central Drug Laboratory in Lagos achieved WHO Prequalification in September 2023.

Nigeria attained Pre-Accession Pre-Applicant status in the Pharmaceutical Inspection and Cooperation Scheme (PIC/S), a membership shared by only 50 countries globally.

In 2025, Nigeria became the 24th member of the International Council for Harmonisation (ICH), one of only 25 members among 194 regulatory agencies worldwide.

Through the Five Plus Five regulatory directive, Prof. Adeyeye drove a 70 per cent reduction in the importation of pharmaceuticals already being manufactured in Nigeria, significantly strengthening the domestic pharmaceutical industry.

International pharmaceutical companies that left Nigeria in 2017 are now investing and reinvesting in the country, bringing technology transfer and global partnerships.

NAFDAC is now working towards WHO Maturity Level 4 and World Listed Authority status, milestones that would enable medicines manufactured in Nigeria to be traded freely across the African continent and globally, positioning Nigeria as a pharmaceutical export nation of international standing.

The two-day ABLA programme, themed “From Vision to Velocity: Driving Africa’s Next Wave of Growth and Leadership,” was held across two iconic London venues.

Day One took place at the GMT Suite, Hilton London Metropole, where Prof. Adeyeye delivered a keynote address on “The African University of the Future: Innovation, Relevance, and Global Competitiveness,” calling for the urgent alignment of African university curricula with global regulatory standards and the integration of digitisation across all academic disciplines. Her address drew wide commendation from the assembled leaders.

Day Two, the awards ceremony at the House of Lords, was hosted by Baroness Sandy Verma, with Lord Dolar Popat and Baroness Lindsay Northover attending as special guests.

The ALO International Advisory Council, chaired by H.E. Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete, former President of the United Republic of Tanzania, was represented by H.E. Chief Dr. Jewel Howard Taylor, former Vice President of Liberia, Gen. William Kip Ward, First Commander of US Africa Command, Hon. Nomvula Mokonyane, former Premier of Gauteng and Deputy Secretary General of the African National Congress of South Africa, and Dr. Victor Oladokun, Communications Advisor to the President of the African Development Bank, among others.

Speaking after receiving her award, Prof. Adeyeye said:

“I accept this honour not for myself alone, but on behalf of the dedicated men and women of NAFDAC whose tireless work makes every achievement attributed to my leadership possible.

When I assumed office in November 2017, NAFDAC was rated below the first rung of the WHO Global Benchmarking ladder.

Today, we stand at Maturity Level 3, successfully re-benchmarked in June 2025, a distinction held by only 35 per cent of regulatory agencies worldwide.

NAFDAC DG presents 7-year scorecard, signs Africa medicines treaty

-Africa Medicines Agency treaty, Adeyeye will strengthen collaboration and  battle against falsified drugs across Africa – Prof. Adeyeye

    By Aderogba George

Abuja:   The Director-General of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, on Tuesday presented the agency’s seven-year scorecard, highlighting reforms in food and drug regulation.

Adeyeye also unveiled Nigeria’s treaty with the African Medicines Agency (AMA), aimed at strengthening regulatory systems and curbing substandard and falsified products across Africa.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the event, titled “Safeguarding the Nation’s Health, Empowering Progress,” also highlighted the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Agenda on healthcare transformation and pharmaceutical sovereignty.

Adeyeye said the event was to showcase NAFDAC’s progress since November 2017.

According to her, “the overall crown of the event is the joining of force with AMA to further strengthen the system to curb the movement of substandard and falsified food and drugs within the Africa sub-region”.

She urged Nigerians to avoid unapproved drug vendors.

“Buy medicines from pharmacy. Get your receipts. The manufacturers are now better sensitised that they cannot just take their medicines to open market.

“If they do, they better know the open market because we will be coming after the open market,” she said.

Adeyeye noted improvements in compliance within the sector.

“In terms of change, the manufacturers are already changing. We have low risk, medium risk, high risk. The high risk are becoming medium risk. The medium risk is becoming low risk, and the health of our people will be better for it”.

She emphasised that reform is gradual and requires public cooperation.

“In terms of substandard falsified medicines, you don’t deal with companies that are not registered with NAFDAC. Don’t buy medicines from them.

“Please ask them to show you their registration. If it is retail, go to pharmacies where you get receipts. When you feel the medicine doesn’t work, bring it to NAFDAC, we will take it up,” she said.

On the treaty, Adeyeye said it would strengthen collaboration across Africa.

“If a country doesn’t have manufacturing facility, they can come to another country that has manufacturing facility to buy or do contract manufacturing.

“We are working together as a continent to harmonise and ensure African standard, not Nigerian standard but international standard,” she said.

Also speaking, the Director-General of AMA, Dr Mimi Darko, said the agency, backed by the African Union (AU), would benefit from Nigeria’s participation.

“With Nigeria joining strength with AMA, we believe we will witness better administration, we will achieve our goals. Nigeria is a strong ally in the Africa continent,” Darko said. (NAN) www.nannews.ng

Abuja (FLOWERBUDNEWS): The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has clarified that the indomie Noodles Vegetable Flavour recalled by the French Authority (Rappel Conso of France) did not originate from Nigeria and was never registered by the Agency

NAFDAC Director General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, who gave the clarification in a press release on Sunday disclosed that the product was recalled due to the presence of undeclared allergens.

The specific allergens, Prof Adeyeye said, were milk and eggs, ”which may pose significant health risks to consumers with allergies or intolerances.”

The NAFDAC Boss disclosed that since the Agency became aware of the recall of unwholesome indomie, it undertaken some proactive measures, which included increased vigilance actions to guard against the possible entry of the recalled product into Nigeria.

Prof. Adeyeye said that, as a responsive regulator, ”surveillance has been directed across all zones and states, adding that all NAFDAC zonal directors and state coordinators have been mandated to mop up the product if found within their jurisdictions.

”The public is hereby informed that the Indomie Noodles Vegetable Flavour in question is not registered with the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) for sale in Nigeria,” Prof. Adeyeye stated.

    Prof. Adeyeye declared further;

” This significantly reduces the likelihood of the affected product entering the Nigerian market.

”Further, the Indomie instant noodles products (and other brands of noodles) registered by NAFDAC for sale in the Nigerian market are manufactured locally in Nigeria and are only granted NAFDAC registration status following a strict regulatory regime covering all aspects of Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP).

”The Ports Inspection Directorate (PID) is also on heightened alert to guard against the importation of the implicated product into Nigeria,”

She strongly advised onsumers ”to exercise caution, discard the recalled product if found, and report any suspicion of its sale or distribution to the nearest NAFDAC office or call 0800-162-3322.”

Prof. Adeyeye also urged the public to ensure that ”Adverse events or side effects related to consumption should be reported via NAFDAC’s E-reporting platforms available on www.nafdac.gov.ng.

”NAFDAC wishes to reassure the public that the Agency is proactive and remains alive to her responsibilities of safeguarding the health of the public, including Nigerians who may travel abroad or purchase products online.NAFDAC,” She concluded.

”Through the development of harmonised technical guidelines, the ICH safeguards public health by ensuring the availability of safe, effective, and high-quality medicines worldwide,” the NAFDAC Boss disclosed.

In the historical statement, Prof Adeyeye declared:
The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), is pleased to announce a historic milestone in Nigeria’s regulatory space:

NAFDAC has officially been admitted into full membership of the International Council for Harmonisation of Technical Requirements for Pharmaceuticals for Human Use (ICH) from an Observer status.

The International Council for Harmonisation of Technical Requirements for Pharmaceuticals for Human Use (ICH) is a select body comprising leading regulatory authorities and the pharmaceutical industry.

It is dedicated to advancing the scientific and technical principles of pharmaceutical development. Through the development of harmonised technical guidelines, the ICH safeguards public health by ensuring the availability of safe, effective, and high-quality medicines worldwide.

NAFDAC’s journey toward full ICH membership commenced in the last quarter of 2022, when the Director General was advised to apply for Observership status.

Following the submission and approval of the application, NAFDAC was invited to p QAarticipate in the 2023 ICH meeting in Vancouver, Canada, where the Agency delivered a formal presentation as part of the evaluation process.

NAFDAC was subsequently granted Observership and provided with a set of membership requirements.Over the next two years, the Agency undertook a series of capacity-building activities, including training on multiple ICH guidelines to demonstrate effective implementation, as well as active participation in Expert Working Groups.

These steps formed the foundation of the rigorous membership pathway. The Agency fulfilled the necessary requirements in April 2025 following the successful international workshop on ICH M13A (Bioequivalence), during which NAFDAC convened stakeholders in Lagos—including manufacturers—and engaged virtually with Heads of regional regulatory agencies.

Our methodical and structured approach to meeting the criteria was central to this achievement. In addition, the support received from Northeastern University, Boston, USA, and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation for the training programs significantly contributed to the Agency’s attainment of ICH membership status.

This pronouncement was made by the Assembly of the International Council for Harmonisation t at the in- person meeting which took place on 18-19 November 2025 in Singapore.

The official announcement was later made through a Press Release by the ICH on 26th November 2025 on their website – https://ich.org/.

This achievement places Nigeria among global leaders committed to the highest standards of quality, safety, and efficacy of medicines. For our citizens,

it means better access to high-quality medical products. For our pharmaceutical manufacturers, it opens the door to improved competitiveness and greater confidence in Nigerian-made products at home and abroad.

There are 194 regulatory agencies globally, and Nigeria is now the 24th among the select group of 25 national regulatory authorities (NRAs) worldwide currently committed to implementing globally harmonised, science-based regulatory standards through ICH membership.

To be part of the 25 NRAs is significant and for our country, it represents a major step forward in strengthening the quality, safety, and efficacy of medicines available to our population.

The good news was shared with our H.E. Omayuli Francisca Kemi, the Ambassador of Nigeria to Singapore who warmly welcomed the NAFDAC Team to Singapore.

    5. Stronger Global PartnershipsFull membership reinforces Nigeria’s position as a strategic regulatory partner within Africa, contributing to stronger regional collaboration and supporting the African Medicines Agency (AMA) vision.Acknowledgment of Contributions

This achievement did not happen overnight. It is the result of years of sustained commitment, leadership under the Director General, Prof Moji Adeyeye, and technical excellence across the Agency.

We proudly acknowledge the dedicated NAFDAC staff who have served— and continue to serve— as members of the ICH Expert Working Groups (EWGs).

Their rigorous scientific input, countless hours of document review, expert contributions, and unwavering professionalism helped demonstrate that Nigeria possesses the competence and systems required of an ICH member.

Planning of the international trainings was facilitated by the current Director of Veterinary Medicine and Allied Products who was previously in Drug Evaluation and Research Directorate.

“The efforts of the staff have brought prestige not only to NAFDAC but also to the Commander-in-Chief, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, who in his wisdom extended the tenure of the Director General for sustainability of the achievements during her first term as part of the Renewed Hope Agenda.

The Director-General  described the AfCFTA as a defining milestone for the continent, noting that it presented both opportunities and responsibilities for NAFDAC as a key player in safeguarding public health.

She emphasised that as the volume of regulated products crossing African borders increases, vigilance at ports and enhanced intelligence-driven inspections will be critical to preventing the influx of substandard and falsified products.

Prof. Adeyeye also underscored NAFDAC’s strategic role as an enabler of the Nigerian industry, stressing the need for efficient export certification and streamlined regulatory processes that support manufacturers to compete effectively in the continental market without compromising safety and quality standards.

She further highlighted the importance of inter-regulatory collaboration among agencies within Nigeria and across Africa to harmonise standards, strengthen mutual recognition arrangements, and share intelligence on unsafe products.

Prof. Adeyeye encouraged NAFDAC staff to embrace continuous learning and deepen their understanding of AfCFTA’s implications for regulatory science, urging them to remain proactive as “regulatory ambassadors” for Nigeria and the continent.

She reaffirmed that with NAFDAC’s WHO Global Benchmarking Tool Maturity Level 3 (GBT ML3) status, the Agency continues to serve as a model for regulatory excellence across Africa. (FLOWERBUDNEWS)
