Workers turn out enmasse at eagle square to commemorate 2025 May Day

Workers drawn from the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, and Trade Union Congress, TUC, are currently gathered at the Eagle Square, Abuja in their large numbers to commemorate the 2025 May Day festivities.

This year’s festivity comes barely a few months after the Federal Government, under the leadership of President Bola Tinubu, increased the National Minimum Wage to N70,000.

The struggle for a review of the minimum wage followed the removal of fuel subsidy by the Tinubu administration on May 29th, 2023.

Despite the increase, some workers have called for further review of the minimum wage, especially with the high inflationary trend in the country.

May Day, which is usually observed on May 1st, is set aside globally to commemorate the efforts of workers, especially their contributions to nation building.

At the Eagle Square Abuja, on Thursday, morning, workers were seen in high spirit, with some chanting solidarity songs.

Many of the affiliate union members making up the Trade Union Congress, TUC and Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, were seen putting on colourful branded attires showcasing their unions.

As of the time of filing this brief report, it was not clear if President Bola Tinubu will be attending the event personally or will be sending a representative

Osun Begins Marking of Iwo Major Road Dualisation

Osun State surveyors commenced work at the site of Odo-Ori/Adeeke Road earmarked for expansion and dualisation by the government of Governor Ademola Adeleke.

A Ministry of Works delegation which visited Oba Abdulrasheed Akanbi, the Oluwo of Iwo, on April 17 for consultation had assured the monarch and community leaders that the work would start on the road in a matter of days.

Keeping its words, the surveyors started the marking of the road and delineation of structures to be potentially demolished for the project to meet specifications.

Leading the surveyors was Mr. Taofeek Oyebamiji. He explained that the Odo-Ori roundabout would have a roundabouts of 30 metres with a 15-metre-long radius.

Although the project was designed to start at the roundabouts, it would extend by junction, it would extend by 125 metres to Agbowo Road, 136 metres to both Osogbo and Ibadan Roads.

He went further to say that the main road would be widened by 35 metres. When divided into two, each carriageway would be 17.5 metres (~57 Feet)

“It is our mandate to carefully mark the road so as to delineate the curves, alignment and the structures to be touched by this project. This is the preliminary stage of the construction and what we are able to achieve here will give a clear direction to the construction engineers that would handle the work,” Oyebamiji said.

“We are glad that community people are calm and they seem to be cooperative. It shows that they already have an understanding of why we are here.”

“We will conclude our own part of the work in few days time. I am sure that the contractors would immediately mobilise their equipment once we are done and file our technical report.”

“It is important to state that the first phase will begin at Odo-Ori junction and terminate at the Post Office in Oja-Ale. The phasing of the work will ensure a speedy completion and reduce the stretch of period the road would be blocked and open it up for public use.”

Road users appeared to be excited about the possibilities and ease of commute the project would bring to them.

When speaking, Mr. Babatunde Wasiu, expressed what seemed to be in the minds of the people. “This will definitely add more beauty to our community. But more importantly, it will enhance transportation and public safety. Placed side by side, the benefits obviously outweigh any temporary inconvenience we will witness,” he said.

“For me, if buildings are demolished, it is for the greater good and I am fully ready to cooperate with the government. The government should also do justice to property owners by paying them compensation for their properties.”

Following the first visit to the Oluwo, the monarch convened a town hall on 21st of April where he formally intimated residents of the project and the proposed demolition of some roadside structures for public good.

Osun monarch suspends chief over land grabbing allegations

The palace of the Timi of Ede in Osun State, Oba Munirudeen Lawal, on Monday, announced the indefinite suspension of the Loogun of Ede, Chief Jimoh Kabir, from office.

A statement made available to The PUNCH by the Timi’s palace said Kabir had allegedly disregarded the authority of Oba Lawal and engaged in land grabbing.

It was also stated that the decision to suspend Kabir was taken by the Timi-in-Council, the highest traditional decision-making body in the town, following a series of complaints against the now-suspended chief.

“The Timi-in-Council, the highest traditional body in Edeland, has suspended Chief Jimoh Kabir as the Loogun of Edeland.

The decision to suspend the Loogun followed a series of allegations of land grabbing, flagrant disrespect for law and order, as well as disrespect for the stool of Timi Agbale Olofa Ina of Edeland.

“The Timi-in-Council said it is unbecoming of a subject of His Majesty, the Timi of Edeland, to be engaged in illegal land grabbing unrepentantly, as several attempts to check him have proven unproductive,” the statement read.

The Council further stated that its action became necessary to restore sanity, insisting that the suspension remains in effect until further notice.

The Council also warned other chiefs against using their positions to exploit other subjects in the town, noting that no effort would be spared in restoring sanctity to the traditional institution in Ede.

“The Timi-in-Council emphasised its resolve to uphold the sanctity of the traditional institution in Edeland.

“The Council equally warns all other chiefs in Edeland not to allow the euphoria and privileges of their offices to lead to misconduct or the oppression of subjects,” it further stated.

Efforts to get the suspended chief’s reaction were unsuccessful, as calls to his line rang out. He also had not responded to a text message sent to him by The PUNCH as of the time of filing this report.

NAFDAC DG Cautions Nigerians Against Use of counterfeit Aflotin drugs

    By Flowerbudnews

The Director General of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye has cautioned Nigerians against use of counterfeited Artemether/Lumefantrine tablets with the brand name Aflotin 20/120.

In a public alert on the Agency’s X handle, Prof. Adeyeye disclosed that the counterfeited product was discovered and reported to the Agency by the genuine manufacturer, Ajanta Pharma Limited from Mumbai, India,

”“Genuine Aflotin 20/120 tablet is a combination of Artemether/Lumefantrine (20mg/120mg) and is primarily used for the treatment of uncomplicated malaria caused by the Plasmodium falciparum parasite,” Prof. Adeyeye stated.

She said Ajanta Pharma disclosed that it manufactured the counterfeited product with batch number PA2128L in December 2018, with an expiry date of November 2020.

Ajanta Pharma said that the batch was created for Combisunate 20/120 (Artemether 20mg/Lumefantrine 120mg Tablets), with a pack size of 30 x 24 tablets, but had now been counterfeited and was being sold as Aflotin 20/120mg with a pack size of 1 x 18 tablets.

The company added that the overprinted matter did not match Ajanta’s overprinting style.

Prof. Adeyeye said that the company had confirmed that the Aflotin 20/120mg with Batch No: PA2128L available in the Nigerian market was a counterfeit, as determined by the investigation carried out and observations made on the product.

“The genuine Aflotin 20/120 tablet is a combination of Artemether/Lumefantrine (20mg/120mg) and is primarily used for the treatment of uncomplicated malaria caused by the Plasmodium falciparum parasite,”  She said.

The NAFDAC Boss emphasised that counterfeit medicines endangered people’s health because they do not comply with regulatory standards, which meant the safety, quality, and efficacy of these products are not ensured.

“The use of counterfeit medicines often fail to treat diseases or conditions effectively, leading to serious health consequences, including death,” the NAFDAC DG said.

She directed all NAFDAC coordinators to conduct surveillance and remove any counterfeit products found within their zones and states.

Prof. Adeyeye also urged distributors, retailers, healthcare professionals, and caregivers to exercise caution and vigilance within the supply chain to avoid the distribution, sale, and use of counterfeit products.

She advised that all medical products must be obtained from authorised/licensed suppliers. (

  • APC, Adeleke trade words over use of Tinubu-Adeleke billboard

APC, Adeleke trade words over use of Tinubu-Adeleke billboard

The All Progressives Congress, APC, in Osun State and Governor Ademola Adeleke on Thursday traded words over the placement of a Tinubu-Adeleke billboard in Iwo town in the State.

While the APC berated Governor Ademola Adeleke for what it described as fraudulent use of President Bola Tinubu’s picture in a billboard with the picture of the governor, Mr Olawale Rasheed, Adeleke spokesperson said the APC is battling with integrity crisis even at the Presidency, hence, afraid of the governor’s rising popularity.

The APC’s Director of Media and Information, Kola Olabisi in a statement disclosed, “the billboard bearing the inscription of Continuity of Progress’ sponsored by a faceless political body scripted as ‘Osun Leaders of Thought’ was sighted early yesterday which probably might have been erected in the early hours of Wednesday.

“This is the absurd playing of dirty politics taken too far as there could not be any acceptable reason for the sponsorship of the fraudulent billboard other than a flagrant display of irreverent attitude orchestrated by political Jews with a mission to compare the sky with the ground.

We want to tell the whole world that we are vehemently condemning and dissociating our party from the nose and eye sore which exemplified political heresy in the heartland of the core progressive politics in the affected part of the state.

“No matter the antics being played by Governor Adeleke and his cohorts in this regard, the crafty efforts of the reactionary elements to dubiously sell their unsellable and difficult political product have refused to fly and subsequently ended up in a total fiasco”.

However, the Olawale in a statement said the APC’s frustration exposed its weakness within the Presidency and frustrations about increasing breakthroughs of the Adeleke administration.

“The opposition is by now scrambling on what to say to another breakthrough recorded by Mr Governor – the deal on cultural tourism partnership at the British Musuem and the linkage between UK and Osun business through the Nigeria-UK Chamber of Commerce. The public awaits the lies and misinformation from Osun APC

“The opposition is confused about groundswell of support for Governor Adeleke across party lines and across local and national audience. The public at home and abroad are impressed by the huge delivery of the administration across sectors. Interestingly, the appraisal of performance is coming from federal and non-governmental bodies.

The shock of national and local endorsements create identifty crisis for Osun APC as its lost credibility from the Presidency to key national caucus. The opposition is therefore running amock, ranting over billboards from non-governmental groups, displaying ignorance over investment drive and wandering over reality of its unelectability”, the statement posited

  • NAFDAC’s new regulations promise safer, reliable drugs

NAFDAC’s new regulations promise safer, reliable drugs

Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, the Director General of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), has reaffirmed the Agency’s commitment to ensuring the quality, safety, and efficacy of generic medicines in Nigeria by enforcing stringent bioequivalence.

Speaking on Thursday in Lagos, Prof. Adeyeye, said that NAFDAC initiative, aimed at boosting public confidence in generic drugs, sought to prevent the circulation of substandard medications and ensure that generics provide comparable therapeutic effects to their branded counterparts.

Bioequivalence studies are vital scientific assessments that confirm the interchangeability of generic medicines with their innovator counterparts.

These studies guarantee that generic drugs deliver similar clinical outcomes, ensuring their effectiveness in managing health conditions

She said, “By mandating bioequivalence studies, NAFDAC is strengthening its regulatory framework to safeguard public health.

“This measure not only enhances trust in the pharmaceutical industry but also encourages rational prescribing practices.”

Adeyeye said that to align stakeholders and facilitate compliance, NAFDAC had outlined a strategic roadmap that included issuing comprehensive regulations and guidelines to the pharmaceutical industry.
