Okechukwu says no realistic prospect of harmonising opposition presidential candidates as ‘horse has bolted’

The former Director-General of Voice of Nigeria (VON), Mr Osita Okechukwu, has advised opposition parties that there is no realistic prospect of harmonising opposition presidential candidates ahead of the 2027 General Elections.

Okechukwu, who is a Chieftain of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), said this in a statement he issued on Sunday in Enugu.

He made the statement in reaction to His Excellence Atiku Abubakar’s Media Aide, Mr Paul Ibe, recent press release.

Atiku’s side said: “It is not too late for the opposition to harmonize their strengths ahead of 2027 if the Yar’Adua 2.0 President Tinubu is to be retired to either Bourdillon or Iragbiji.”

It would be recalled that Atiku’s media aide issued the statement following the decision of the Federal High Court sitting in Lokoja, which reversed its earlier ruling relating to the registration of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).

Okechukwu noted that for now, “the horse has bolted” following what he described as Atiku’s serial unstatesman-like breach of Nigeria’s north-south presidential rotation convention.

He lamented that paradoxically Atiku made this self serving statement when all democrats and opposition political parties were questioning the rationale for the decision of the Honourable Justice.

According to him, Atiku should accept responsibility for the irreversible fragmentation of the formidable opposition coalition which the African Democratic Congress (ADC) then represented.

“Albeit many had initially likened ADC coalition to the 2013 APC merger before Atiku converted it to Special Purpose Vehicle.

“Only to today, choose to haul blame darts at President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GFCR, who has no hand in neither dismantling PDP in 2023 nor ADC in 2026,” he said.

Okechukwu maintained that President Tinubu’s administration had made unforced errors resulting in public criticism.

“However, Atiku’s determination to pursue the presidency, despite widespread concerns over the zoning and rotation convention, was the principal factor that precipitated ADC coalition’s present conundrum,” he said.

He noted that only a few months earlier, Atiku had expressed great confidence in the coalition.

Okechukwu argued that the recent developments demonstrate that political coalitions cannot be sustained merely by scatter-diagram opposition to an incumbent government.

He said, “But must also be anchored on statesmanship and respect for established democratic conventions, particularly the rotation of the presidency between the North and the South.

“As an APC foundation member, I have nothing to say but to thank Atiku immensely for once deliberately saving his friend, Tinubu, in the forthcoming 2027 Presidential Election as he did during 2003 Governorship Elections in the South-West.”

Okechukwu noted that Atiku by omission or commission had reinforced the long-standing political relationship between Atiku and Tinubu, by disorganizing the ADC.

“This self-inflicted injury cannot be resolved through calls for harmonisation after the coalition has already fractured and Obi/Kwankwaso’s horse had bolted,”: he said.

NSC pledges regulatory support for Sealink Project implementation
Lagos, June 27, 2026, The Nigerian Shippers’ Council (NSC) has reaffirmed its commitment to providing the regulatory guidance and institutional support required for the successful implementation of the Sealink Project.
The Executive Secretary of the council, Dr Pius Akutah, gave the assurance during a courtesy visit by a high-level delegation from the Nigerian Export-Import Bank (NEXIM Bank), supported by the European Union (EU) and in partnership with the Port of Antwerp-Bruges, at the council’s headquarters in Lagos.
The council’s Head of Public Relations, Mrs Rebecca Adamu, disclosed this in a statement on Saturday.
Akutah described the Sealink Project as a strategic intervention capable of transforming Nigeria’s maritime and coastal shipping sector, saying the council remained committed to supporting initiatives that enhance trade facilitation and regional connectivity.
The delegation, led by Mr Hope Nyongo, Technical Adviser to NEXIM Bank, presented the project to the council and identified the NSC as a critical stakeholder in its implementation.
Nyongo also conveyed the readiness of the Port of Antwerp-Bruges to collaborate on the rehabilitation and upgrade of Burutu Port as a key component of the project.
He said the project, co-funded by the EU and technically supported by the Port of Antwerp-Bruges, was designed to strengthen Nigeria’s coastal and inland waterway transport systems while enhancing regional trade connectivity.
Nyongo noted that the NSC would play a pivotal role in freight logistics development and the protection of shippers’ interests.

Responding, Akutah commended the initiative but stressed the need to address critical operational and regulatory issues to ensure its sustainability.
He said dredging costs should be integrated into the project’s financial framework, noting that efficient navigation channels were essential to the viability of coastal and inland shipping operations.
According to him, the existing fleet operating along the proposed corridors may be inadequate for the project’s objectives, calling for the deployment of suitable vessels to ensure seamless operations.
Akutah also underscored the need for a robust security architecture, particularly in the Niger Delta, to guarantee the safety of vessels, cargo and personnel.
He disclosed that the council would establish a dedicated technical team to provide regulatory guidance throughout the implementation of the project.
The NSC boss also assured the delegation that an appropriate regulatory framework would be developed and reviewed before any concession arrangement was undertaken.
He expressed optimism that the Sealink Project would boost trade facilitation, maritime connectivity and economic growth.
He added that Nigeria was strategically positioned to emerge as a major trade and maritime hub in Africa under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).
Akutah further called for the establishment of a clear dispute resolution mechanism to address potential commercial and regulatory issues during the implementation of the project, describing it as critical to investor confidence and programme stability.
He said the meeting marked another step toward strengthening institutional collaboration and advancing the Sealink Project as a catalyst for regional trade and maritime development in Nigeria and across Africa.

Media Group Calls For Continuous Strengthening Of Security On Nigeria’s Maritime Domain

    By Dianabasi Effiong

Uyo (FLOWERBUDNEWS): The Energy and Maritime Reporters of Nigeria (EMR), Akwa Ibom State Branch, has called for continuous strengthening of security on Nigeria’s maritime domain.

The group made the call in a communique at the end of a one-day training Workshop in Uyo, organised to strengthen the capacity of journalists reporting activities in the energy and maritime sectors of the state.

The workshop, with the theme: “Understanding The Operations Of International Oil Companies (IOCs) And Their Marine Logistics Service Companies In Akwa Ibom State Waterways” was organised by the state’s branch of the EMR.

The communique also stated that International Oil Companies (IOCs) remain critical contributors to Nigeria’s economic growth through investment, employment generation, and revenue.

According to the communique, marine logistics also constitutes the backbone of offshore oil and gas operations by facilitating the movement of personnel, equipment, and essential supplies.

It stated that the Nigerian Oil and Gas Industry Content Development Act had significantly enhanced indigenous participation and created opportunities for local businesses and skilled professionals.

It also stated, “Akwa Ibom State possesses enormous comparative advantages, including its strategic coastline and offshore assets, positioning it to become a leading marine logistics and energy services hub in Nigeria and West Africa.

“The Nigerian Oil and Gas Industry Content Development Act has significantly enhanced indigenous participation and created opportunities for local businesses and skilled professionals.

“Security remains indispensable to sustainable offshore operations, as piracy, crude oil theft, kidnapping, pipeline vandalism, smuggling, and other maritime crimes continue to pose threats to national assets.”

It stated that accurate, balanced, and ethical journalism was essential for promoting transparency, accountability, investor confidence, and public understanding of developments within the energy and maritime sectors.

It also added: “Journalists covering energy and maritime activities operate in high-risk environments and must prioritise personal safety, obtain necessary authorisations, and strictly comply with safety and security protocols.”

The communique stated that environmental sustainability, pollution prevention, oil spill response, and community engagement were fundamental responsibilities of operators within the oil and gas industry.

“Journalists covering the energy and maritime sectors should continually build their professional knowledge to improve the quality, accuracy, and depth of reportage. EMR should sustain regular capacity-building programmes to keep members abreast of emerging developments in the energy and maritime industries.

“The government should continue strengthening maritime security through improved collaboration among the Nigerian Navy, the Nigeria Police Force, NIMASA, NSCDC, DSS, NPA, and other relevant agencies.

“International Oil Companies and marine logistics service providers should deepen engagement with host communities while promoting environmental sustainability and corporate social responsibility.

“Government at all levels should invest in marine infrastructure and policies that encourage indigenous participation, employment generation, and private sector investment.
Journalists should maintain professional relationships with relevant security agencies without compromising editorial independence.

“Media practitioners should refrain from publishing sensitive operational information capable of endangering national security or ongoing security operations,” the communique stated.

It urged all journalists covering offshore operations to conduct risk assessments, use appropriate personal protective equipment, verify access permissions, and observe all maritime safety procedures during assignments.

The workshop commended the Executive members of EMR, Akwa Ibom State Branch, under the leadership of Comrade Harrison Ndifreke, for organising the timely and impactful training.

Participants also expressed their appreciation to the resource persons for their practical presentations and valuable contributions toward enhancing professional competence among energy and maritime reporters.

The workshop ended with a renewed commitment by participants to uphold professionalism, ethical journalism, safety consciousness, and responsible reporting in support of the sustainable development, security, and economic prosperity of Akwa Ibom State and Nigeria.

The EMR workshop, held at Plot 51 G-Line, Ewet Housing Estate, Uyo, brought together select media practitioners, security experts, and industry stakeholders to deepen understanding of the operations of IOCs, marine logistics services, and maritime security within Akwa Ibom State.

Participants received insightful lectures from Mr. Sunny Udom, a maritime expert and EMR stakeholder, on the operations of International Oil Companies and marine logistics services, and from DCP Joseph A. Udoh, PSC (Rtd), on Marine Logistics Operations, Security on the Akwa Ibom waterways, and safety measures for journalists covering the sector.

    The communique was signed by Comrade Solomon Okpo, Chairman, Communiqué Drafting Committee;
Comrade Iniabasi Umo, Secretary; Comrade Uyime Ekwere, member; Comrade Harrison Ndifreke, Chairman, EMR Akwa Ibom State Branch; and Comrade Mabel Ekanem, Secretary, EMR Akwa Ibom State Branch.

Open defecation: Nasarawa arrests 42 residents over lack of toilet facilities

    By Sunday John

Lafia:  Nasarawa State Government has arrested 42 residents for living in houses without toilet facilities, as part of efforts to curb open defecation and improve environmental sanitation across the state.

Mr Abubakar Mohammed, Chief Prosecution Officer, Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources, disclosed this while briefing newsmen after the June monthly environmental sanitation exercise on Saturday in Lafia.

Mohammed said the arrests were made during a joint enforcement operation by officials of the ministry and security agencies.

He said that the operation also led to the arrest of 88 other persons across the 13 Local Government Areas (LGAs) of the state for engaging in business activities during the sanitation exercise, in violation of the state’s environmental sanitation law.

According to him, the offenders contravened Section 9(2) of the Nasarawa State Environmental Sanitation Law.

He said all the suspects were prosecuted by mobile courts in their respective LGAs to serve as a deterrent to others.

“The government will no longer tolerate practices that endanger public health because the state sanitation law makes it mandatory for every household to have a functional toilet.

“Open defecation is not only unhealthy, but it is also illegal. Today, we apprehended 42 persons whose homes were found without any form of toilet facility,” he said.

Mohammed explained that the enforcement exercise followed sustained public sensitisation campaigns urging residents to provide basic sanitation facilities in their homes.

He noted that the absence of toilets in many households contributed to the spread of water-borne diseases such as cholera, typhoid and diarrhoea, particularly during the rainy season.

“When people defecate openly, rainwater washes the waste into water sources and drainage channels. Children and other vulnerable groups suffer the most. Government cannot fold its arms,” he said.

The prosecution officer reaffirmed the state’s commitment to achieving open defecation-free status by 2028 in line with the National Roadmap on Sanitation.

Also speaking, Princess Margaret Elayo, Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, represented by Mr Illiya Yusuf-Adeka, General Manager of the Nasarawa State Environmental Protection Agency (NASEPA), expressed satisfaction with the level of compliance recorded during the exercise.

She attributed the success of the sanitation exercise to the support of security agencies, traditional rulers, the media and inspection teams of the ministry.

The commissioner urged residents to sustain proper environmental sanitation to prevent disease outbreaks and promote healthy living.

“If the environment is kept clean, it will guard against possible outbreaks of diseases and ensure healthier living for the people,” she said. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

VICTIM OF GUNSHOT WOUND A MEMBER OF ACCORD NOT APC – Accord Chairman

    By Adedeji Ishola

Contrary to the lies by Osun APC members, Mustapha Taoreed Faronbi is a member of Accord in Ward 8, Osogbo Local Government. The fact that the Osun APC wrongly addressed him as Taofeeq Mustapha gave it up and raises questions about the narrative it is peddling.

According to the victim, he is not a member of APC nor his attackers were members of the Accord. He went on to identify some of his attackers by names, which does not in any way support the Osun APC’s false narrative, a statement by Pastor Victor Akande,
The Chairman, ACCORD Osun has disclosed.

He added that it was after the attack that he was forced to wear the APC branded cap and forced to record that video under duress, which APC members are made to broadcast.

A careful review of the two videos shared by the Osun APC showed that the cap on the victim was different from one another, indicating that the two different caps used in the two videos were deliberately planted to smear the Accord and distract attention away from violence targeted on Osun people.

This is one of many other harassments of Accord members by APC thugs. They have now gone further to attempt to twist the narrative posing as the victims.

Seven Suspected Boko Haram, ISWAP Commanders Arrested at Katsina Airport After Returning From Hajj

Nigeria’s security agencies have arrested seven suspected commanders of Boko Haram and the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) at Katsina Airport after they returned from the Hajj pilgrimage in Mecca, Saudi Arabia.

The Federal Government described the operation as a major success made possible by Nigeria’s newly integrated digital identity and border security system.

The Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, announced the arrests on Friday shortly after President Bola Ahmed Tinubu signed the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) Act, 2026, into law.

According to the minister, the suspects were identified as they arrived in Nigeria last Thursday and were immediately arrested before being handed over to the Department of State Services (DSS) for further investigation.

Tunji-Ojo said the breakthrough was achieved through the integration of the National Identity Management Commission database with the Nigeria Immigration Service and international security platforms, including Interpol.

He explained that the connected system enabled authorities to detect and flag the suspects as they entered the country through Katsina Airport.

“We inherited a fragmented identity management system where government databases operated independently. Today, our immigration database is fully integrated with NIMC and linked to Interpol’s 24-hour security network,” the minister said. He added that the new system has improved intelligence sharing and strengthened the country’s ability to identify high-risk individuals at border entry points.

President Tinubu signed the NIMC Act, 2026, at the Presidential Villa in Abuja in the presence of top government officials, including Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu, Attorney-General and Minister of Justice Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), and NIMC Director-General Dr. Abisoye Coker-Odusote. The government said the new law is designed to strengthen Nigeria’s identity management system, improve cooperation among security agencies, and support efforts against terrorism, identity theft, financial crimes, and other cross-border offences.

The government also said the reforms have made passport issuance more secure by ensuring applicants are verified through the NIMC database before passports are issued. While officials described the arrests as a significant security breakthrough, authorities have not yet released the identities of the suspects or announced any formal charges, as investigations by the DSS continue.
