Troops neutralize suspected killers of 4 soldiers in Rivers

    By Flowerbud News

The Nigerian Army has announced that its troops have shot dead two suspects accused of killing four soldiers on protection duty in Rivers.

Lt.-Col. Danjuma Danjuma, spokesman of the Nigerian Army 6 Division in Port Harcourt, disclosed this in a statement on Tuesday.

He revealed that the unidentified gang members were neutralised by troops of 5 Battalion during a raid on their hideout in Kalaogbokolo, Ahoada West Local Government Area of Rivers.

“The gang killed four soldiers and abducted two Korean expatriates working for Daewoo Nigeria Limited on Dec. 12, 2023.

“Two of the gang members were apprehended during the operation but were neutralised after attempting to escape into the bush following a lengthy chase by the soldiers,” he stated.

Danjuma explained that the suspects were captured following credible intelligence that revealed their return to the community from their hideouts.

He said that troops recovered an AK-47 rifle, a Fabrique National rifle, and a pump action shotgun.

Other items seized included two locally made rifles, three AK-47 magazines, three rounds of 7.62mm Special ammunition, and 13 rounds of 7.62mm NATO ammunition.

“The Nigerian Army reiterates that, regardless of how long it takes, criminals involved in such heinous acts will face severe consequences for their actions.

“We assure citizens of the division’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property, and we encourage them to continue providing actionable intelligence on the activities of criminal gangs,” he added.

  • Pipelines vandalism: Expert urges FG to explore modern technology

Pipelines vandalism: Expert urges FG to explore modern technology

Oni, who is also a partner at Bloomfield Law Firm, recommended the deployment of drones, pipe-in-pipe systems, fibre-optic sensors, and pressure-drop-controlled flow stations to enhance pipeline monitoring and functionality.

He gave the advice in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Friday in Lagos.

He said this recommended strategies would safeguard the nation’s pipeline system from continuous vandalisation.

According to Oni, strenghtening security measures is essential for curbing illegal activities and ensuring a steady revenue flow from oil and gas, which are critical to the country’s development.

He further explained that ensuring a steady supply of feedstock was essential for achieving optimal refinery production, which would help meet domestic fuel demand and reduce dependence on fuel imports.

He said, “Local refineries must explore various options to ensure continuous access to feedstock, which is necessary to maintain optimal refining levels.

“The distance from the feedstock source and its type can affect refining economics, and refineries must minimise dependency on the government for supply.”

Oni said that establishing strategic partnerships with upstream oil producers and situating refineries near crude sources, could guarantee steady supply of crude.

He noted that conventional refineries with larger crude requirements might consider sourcing from international markets.

The expert added that for modular refineries, co-locating them within existing refineries or onshore marginal fields could prove beneficial.

Oni, however, stated that damaged pipelines, shallow water channels, and inadequate logistics and infrastructure were significant challenges facing the refining sector and the broader oil and gas industry.

He explained that pipeline damage had consistently disrupted crude supply, while the country’s rail and inland waterway systems remained suboptimal for transporting large volumes of oil and refined products.

To address these issues, Oni called for significant investments in rail system, dredging and barges, to facilitate efficient transportation.

He stressed that a robust intermodal transport system, combining rail, inland waterways, and road transport, would be essential for optimal refined product distribution,

He also advocated for Public-Private Partnerships (PPP), to bridge Nigeria’s infrastructure gap.

On boosting domestic production, Oni lauded the Dangote Integrated Refinery, which has a refining capacity of 650,000 barrels per day (bpd).

He said that the 20 billion dollars refinery, which began operations in January, had already started producing products such as naphtha and jet fuel.

According to OPEC’s 2021 World Oil Outlook, Africa’s medium-term oil outlook is more optimistic, with 1.2 million bpd of new capacity expected by 2026, half of which will come from the Dangote refinery.

He said that since its commissioning, the Dangote refinery had reduced fuel imports, saved foreign exchange and alleviated fuel shortages in the country.

He said that with an estimated production of 330,000 bpd of petrol, the refinery accounts for over one per cent of global petrol demand.

Oni also mentioned that the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Ltd. (NNPCL),  had announced the re-streaming of the Port Harcourt refinery, signaling the government’s commitment to enhancing crude oil processing and delivering petroleum products to the market.

He noted that this project involves engineering, procurement, construction, installation, and commissioning (EPCIC) efforts, aimed at restoring the refinery’s full functionality.

He stated that in the final quarter of 2024, Nigeria achieved a significant milestone, with crude oil and condensate production reaching 1.8 million barrels per day (bpd).

Oni described this achievement as a major step towards meeting OPEC’s production quota, which Nigeria had struggled to fulfill for several years.

  • National Park Service acquired 3 forest reserves in 2024- CG

National Park Service acquired 3 forest reserves in 2024- CG

    By Taiye Olayemi

The Nigeria National Park Service (NPS) says it has expanded its reach with the takeover of three forest reserves in 2024.
Dr Ibrahim Goni, Conservator General (CG), in a statement on Monday said that the forest reserves had been converted to national parks .
Goni named the new parks as Hadejia Wetlands, Oba-Hills and Marhai National Parks in Jigawa, Osun and Nasarawa states respectively.
He said the achievements of the service in 2024 showed its commitment to conservation, protection and community engagement.
“These achievements showcase the service’s efforts to protect Nigeria’s natural heritage and promote sustainable development,” he said.
The CG said the service had enhanced its anti-poaching efforts through the deployment of high-tech equipment such as drones, SMARTS, Power-chute and GSM technology.
According to him, this initiative had resulted in 621 arrests, with 466 prosecutions, 61 compoundments and 94 warnings issued.
“This significant increase in arrests and prosecutions demonstrates the Service’s dedication and renewed effort to combating wildlife crime,” he said.
Goni expressed excitement over partnerships with governmental, non-profit and international organisations which ,he said, had enhanced efforts of the service.
Goni noted that a number of these partnerships had facilitated donations to the Service.
He listed some of the partnering organisations as the Nigerian Conservation Foundation, United Nations Office on Drug Crime (UNODC), Sustainability and Conservation Education for Rural Areas (SCERA) and ACReSA.
Goni said the organisations supported the Service with essential equipment, training and funding.
He explained that the service prioritised training and capacity building in 2024,saying no fewer than 100 Park Rangers received tactical operations and counterterrorism training in collaboration with the Nigeria Army.
“30 forest guards from the Federal Capital Territory Forestry Department were trained in forest resources conservation and protection by the Service,” he said.
On research, Goni said a recent PhD research conducted in Cross River National Park showed that, “Low-intensity human activities such as foraging can significantly impact tree species assemblages in tropical forest, particularly for edible species, potentially leaving long-lasting footprints”.
“This research highlights the complex interplay that environmental, spatial and human factors have in shaping tree species dissimilarity in the Nigeria-Cameroon forest regions.
“Other researches in PhDs, MScs and BScs are ongoing in the fields at unit parks,” he said.
The CG lauded the election of Assistant Conservator of Park (ACP) Mohammed Dikko Bala as Africa’s regional representative in the International Rangers Federation (IRF) executive, saying the feat demonstrated the Service’s growing international recognition.
According to Goni, the service launched several conservation initiatives, including Nigeria’s first National Elephant Action Plan for 2024-2034 in collaboration with Elephant Protection Initiative.
He said that 25 rescued African Grey Parrots from wildlife traders were released back into the wild in Cross River State and 161 hectares of degraded land were replanted and maintained across the National Parks under the Green Bond initiative.
Goni said in spite these achievements, the service faced some challenges such as insecurity occasioned by banditry and terrorism.
He said the service also had problems with inadequate anti-poaching patrol equipment such as vehicles, arms and ammunition, vulnerability of protected areas around the National Parks and more.
To address these challenges, he said the service would work to review the National Park Service Act and Regulations as well as the management plan of all the National Parks and seek technical support and donor partnerships.
He reiterated that the service remained committed to protecting Nigeria’s natural heritage and promoting sustainable development.

Meanwhile, the death of the 35-year-old man, Tunji Jimoh, in police custody has sparked outrage in the State, with the Erubu-Asunnara community demanding justice and a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding his demise.

Jimoh, a father and poultry worker from the Erubu/Asunnara community in Ilorin South Local Government Area, was reportedly arrested on Friday, December 20, 2024, over a debt of ₦220,000 owed to a colleague, Mr. Peter, whose brother is allegedly a police officer.

Reports indicate that Jimoh was taken to the Special Investigation Bureau (SIB) at the Kwara State Police Command headquarters, where he was detained without bail. Family members, who left the station late Friday night after being denied access to him, were informed the following morning that Jimoh had died in custody.

Allegations of torture have emerged, with sources claiming that Jimoh was mistreated during detention due to an unresolved agreement with his creditor.

“It is heartbreaking that Tunji’s lifeless body was deposited at a mortuary without the family’s consent,” the statement read. The community described Jimoh as a hardworking and generous individual whose death has left his family and community in deep sorrow.

The community has called on the Inspector General of Police, the Kwara State Commissioner of Police, and Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq to intervene and ensure justice is served.

They have also appealed to the National Assembly, the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), human rights organizations, and civil society groups for support.

“Tunji’s death must not go unpunished. We demand justice for his family, our community, and humanity,” the statement concluded, adding a call for public support under the hashtag #JusticeForTunji.

The incident has drawn widespread condemnation, with activists and community leaders decrying the alleged abuse of power by the police. Many have taken to social media to demand accountability and reform within the police force.

As investigations continue, the family and community are urging authorities to ensure transparency and fairness in uncovering the truth behind Tunji Jimoh’s tragic death.
