The Government of Oyo State has assured its residents that it will leave no stone unturned to ensure the safety of everyone in the state.

The assurance came against the backdrop of news that some bandits from the northern parts of the country were infiltrating the state.

Governor Seyi Makinde during a press briefing after the state’s Joint Security Council meeting said all hands were on deck to fish out the bandits and use the instrumentality of the law to deal with them.

Compol Fatai Owoseni (Rtd), Special Adviser on Security to Oyo State Governor, while briefing the media on the resolution of the Security Council, urged the people to go about their lawful activities without any fear.

He assured them that the state government would pull out all stops to secure the life of everyone in the state.
Owoseni said that with the robust synergy among the security agencies in the state, the bandits and other criminal elements had nowhere to hide.

He noted that to strengthen the security network in the state, the Council would hold expanded meetings that would incorporate local government chairmen as well as traditional rulers.

“The essence of this is to ensure that we take security to the grassroots. The local government administration is the third tier of government and is the closest to the people.

“In the same vein, traditional rulers are close to the people and know most people in their domains. By integrating them into the security network, we are taking security to the grassroots and carrying everyone along.

“Security is everybody’s business and we all have a role to play in ensuring that our state is safe from the antics of bandits and other criminal elements.”

He said that the council also discussed the issue of decongesting correctional centres, adding that the state would invoke its power of prerogative of mercy to set free some of the inmates.

Similarly, the Council discussed the issue of the health and wellbeing of inmates of correctional centres with a recommendation that they should be enrolled on the Oyo State Health Insurance Scheme to ensure that they have access to good healthcare.

“A decision on the health insurance scheme for correctional centre inmates would be taken at one of the subsequent Council meetings,” Owoseni said.

Others present at the briefing were the Commissioner for Justice and Attorney General of the State, Mr Abiodun Aikomo; Commissioner of Police, Oyo State Command, CP Ayodele Sonubi.

Others were the Comptroller, Nigerian Correctional Service, Oyo State Command, CC Jaiyeoba Babafemi and the Comptroller Immigration Services, Oyo State Command, Joseph Dada.

Assault: Lagos Commissioner clears air, says Onikeku operating illegal business in state facility

    By Taiye Olayemi

The Lagos State Ministry of Tourism, Arts, and Culture has set records straight and clarify the events that led to the viral video, where its Commissioner, Mrs Toke Benson-Awoyinka, was accused of an assault.

The ministry, in a statement on Thursday, said that the viral video was concorted to misrepresent the commissioner and misguide the public.

According to the statement, Mr Qudus Onikeku, the Creative Director of the J.Randle Centre for Yoruba Culture and History, and other non state actors had been perpetrating illegal businesses in the facility without state government approval.

The commissioner in her routine oversight visited the centre and found out that the director was operating illegal business not known to the government.

The statement reads “The attention of the Lagos State Ministry of Tourism, Arts, and Culture has been drawn to a viral video circulating on social media regarding an incident at the J.Randle Centre for Yoruba Culture and History.

“It is imperative to set the records straight and clarify the events that led to the said video.

“The commissioner has the statutory responsibility of oversight over all facilities under the Ministry’s purview. In line with this mandate, she embarked on an inspection visit to the J.Randle Centre.

“During the inspection, it was discovered that the Centre Director , Qudus Onikeku, was illegally operating a canteen within the premises without the knowledge and approval of the ministry.

“This prompted Mrs Benson-Awoyinka to question the presence of the establishment and initiated an eviction that the Centre Director violently resisted and had his team attack officials of the Ministry.”

According to the statement, the non-state actors who are neither recognised by the Lagos State Government nor authorised to attend the meeting, who accompanied the Centre Director, barged in.

While the meeting was ongoing, Onikeku ordered the non state actors to record the proceedings.

“This, the Honourable Commissioner objected to. It must be emphasised that recording any meeting without the consent of the presiding authority is unacceptable and a breach of protocol.

“For clarity, Mrs Benson-Awoyinka did not assault anyone, instead a senior female member of her team was physically assaulted by the non state actors which then escalated as seen in the viral video depicting a totally false narrative.

“The video posted ostensibly to blackmail her speaks for itself.

“The Commissioner maintained her stance that unauthorised persons should not participate in the meeting or record its discussions, which is in line with standard administrative procedures.”

The statement stated that an investigation has been ordered into the occurrence, and appropriate actions will be taken as the ministry remained committed to upholding transparency, accountability, and efficient management of all its facilities.

“The commissioner would continue to discharge her duties in the best interest of Lagos State and its citizens.

“We urge members of the public to disregard any misrepresentation of the incident and focus on the Ministry’s unwavering commitment to excellence in service delivery.”

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that Qudus Onikeku was appointed the Creative Director of the John Randle Centre for Yoruba Culture and History by Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Oct. 29, 2024. (NAN) (nannews.ng)

  • Breaking: Court orders detention of suspected terrorists planning to launch ISWAP cell in Osun for 60 days

Breaking: Court orders detention of suspected terrorists planning to launch ISWAP cell in Osun for 60 days

A Federal High Court in Abuja has given the Department of State Service (DSS) the go-ahead to detain 10 suspected terrorists, who had planned to launch a Boko Haram/ISWAP cell in Osun, for 60 days pending conclusion of investigation.

Justice Emeka Nwite, in a ruling on the ex-parte motion moved by DSS lawyer, Y.I. Umar, held that the application was meritorious and accordingly granted.

“An order is hereby made enabling the State Security Service (aka DSS)/applicant to detain the respondents for sixty (60) days pending the conclusion of investigation,” he ruled.

Justice Nwite adjourned the matter until March 3 for mention.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the DSS had, in the motion ex-parte marked: FHC)ABJ/CS/1942/V/2024, listed Adamu Abubakar (aka Abu Aisha), Babagana Bashuli, Muhammed Adam, Mustapha Abacha Katuru Muhammed as 1st to 5th respondents.

The security agency also listed Babakura Mallam Abacha, Muhammed Ciroma, Ali Gambo,
Muhammed Umoru and and Muhammed Bundi as 6th to 10 respondents respectively.
The DSS, in the motion dated Dec. 18, 2024, but filed Dec. 20, 2024, sought one prayer.
The DSS, in the affidavit deposed to by Yamuje Benye, a personnel of the agency attached to the Legal Service Department at the national headquarters, averred that the suspects were arrested in llesa East LGA in Osun.
It said they were arrested on Dec. 16, 2024, upon reasonable suspicious of their involvement in terrorism.
The security.outfit said preliminary investigation revealed that the respondents were members of Boko Haram/ISWAP terrorist group,
    “Intelligence at the disposal of the applicant revealed that the respondents were planning to launch a Boko Haram /ISWAP cell in Osun State;
“That the respondents were arrested while undergoing training on how to manufacture and detonate improvised explosive devices (IEDs),” it said.
The agency alleged that the suspects were members of the late Abubakar Shekau terrorist group, who escaped from Sambisa Forest to Osun because of the series of onslaught being carryout by the Nigerian Army against them.
It said the respondents are aiding the applicant to unravel other members of the terrorist group who are stil at large.
According to the DSS, releasing the respondents at this stage of the preliminary investigation will be detrimental to the applicant’s efforts to arrest other members of the terrorist group.
It said the activities of the respondents constitute potent threat to national security and corporate existence of Nigeria.
“It is in the interest of justice and national security to grant this application,” it prayed.
In a related development, Justice Nwite equally granted an order enabling the DSS to detain Ayomide Akintunde and Nurudeen Adesiyan for a period of 60 days pending the conclusion of investigation.
The judge made the order after Umar, who also appeared for DSS, moved the motion ex-parte marked: FHC/ABJ/CS/1933/V/2024 to the effect.
The matter was subsequently adjourned until March 3 for mention.
The DSS, in the affidavit deposed to by Mercy Ebo, averred that the suspects were arrested on Dec. 19, 2024, by the Service Tactical Team at Ajape Lane 3, Modakeke, Ife East LGA of Osun.
The agency said they were, thereafter, transferred to its headquarters over intelligence report from a foreign Intelligence Service, linking them with Moroccan Terrorist.
“Preliminary investigation and intelligence report revealed that a Moroccan Terrorist currently in custody of the Spanish National Police Service, communicated with Ayomide AKINTUNDE (F) and Nurudeen ADESIYAN on GSM numbers: 08168359934 and 08168542908, respectively.
“That the Moroccan terrorist is being investigated for making jihadist publications and for acquisition of firearms with the intent of conducting terrorist attacks against identified targets in Nigeria,” it said.
It said that preliminary investigation revealed that the suspects admitted ownership of the identified GSM numbers which they had been using for more than ten (10) months.
According to the agency, the release of the respondents at this time would jeopardise the investigation, as investigation has assumed a wider dimension.

The DSS said there was need for a thorough Investigation of the suspects to ensure that they do not pose any security threat to Nigeria or the world at large.
It said the suspects are helping with vital Information that would lead to the arrest of other members of the gang who are at large, hence the need to grant the application.
