The Director-General of the Teachers Continuous Training institute (TCTI), Cross River, Professor Taoheed Adedoja has called on the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to collaborate on training opportunities for Nigerian youths and repentant internet fraudsters, diverting them from harmful pursuits to productive ones that benefit the nation.

During a courtesy visit to the EFCC headquarters in Abuja, Professor Adedoja led a delegation from the Institute and other interested parties. He expressed concern about the damaging effects of internet fraudsters, commonly known as ‘yahoo boys,’ citing social media reports on EFCC’s concerns.

“Mr Chairman, our Institute has a centre for digital literacy and emerging skills and about a year ago, we researched to find out the digital literacy levels of Nigerians using Cross River State as our sample.

“We discovered that less than 14 of the 1000 participants we sampled have the minimum digital requirements.

“So, when we saw in the news concerning your engagement, we discovered that internet fraudsters are incredibly clever and we know their intelligence needs to be positively deployed for their self-development and usefulness.

“We believe that our Institute, in collaboration with your Commission, can come up with various high-tech programs for their rehabilitation and integration.

“We want the youths to take over the country but the question is; do we want them to deploy their intelligence to destroy Nigeria or use the same for the development of Nigeria?

“I believe that with this collaboration, you are going to make lasting legacies in this country because we have a Chairman who is interested in these boys,” he said

In his response, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission’s Chairman, Ola Olukoyede, praised the collaboration proposal, pointing out that the Commission’s mandate is to eradicate economic and financial crimes from the nation and to inform the public about the effects and risks of cybercrime.

“It is good to also collaborate to achieve our mandate. When we are investigating these boys, I see crime and see opportunities in it and I think we can focus on prevention which is always better.

“The challenge is that a lot of them do not have the means to train themselves, so If we can reduce the possibility of crimes by training the youths to be gainfully employed, then we can salvage our country.

“That is why we need people like you (Adedoja) to give us the platform. We are also trying to open a Cyber Crime Training Center, which I believe will be the best. We look forward to a more beneficial relationship”, he said.

Other delegation members included Special Adviser to the Governor of Cross River State on Intergovernmental Affairs, Barr. Chris Njar Ogar, and Director of Academic and Professional Services at TCTI, Dr. Godwin Ogar.

The Oyo State government has opened a part of the reconstructed Olodo bridge to ease the movement of people and vehicles on the route, as earlier promised.

Gov Seyi Makinde of Oyo State represented by the Commissioner for Public Works, Infrastructure and Transport, Prof. Dahud Shangodoyin, opened the completed right side of the bridge, which serves as a link to Osun State, on Saturday.

Recall that the completed half had been opened to pedestrians about two weeks ago, with the state government promising that the facility would be opened to vehicles in 14 days.

Declaring the bridge open to vehicular movement, Prof. Shangodoyin said the completion of the first half of the bridge is a further demonstration of governor Makinde’s commitment to the delivery of dividends of democracy to the people of the state.

He said this was regardless of political inclination, religious affiliation or socio-economic status.

“The need for construction of 35.6km Iwo road Olodo bank Elesingodogbo – Odo-Oba (Oyo/Osun State boundary) was borne out of the passion of the current administration to provide projects with potential for expansion of the economy and engineering a modern Oyo State.

“The economic importance of this 35.6km stretch road which links Oyo State to Osun State cannot be overemphasised. The road was awarded to Messrs Peculiar Ultimate Concern Limited in September, 2022.

“However, the heavy rainfall of July 4th, 2023 in which Egberi river overflew its banks at Olodo area due to the inadequacy of the existing 3.0m x 3.0m single box culvert rendered the road impassable.

“The anguish and economic losses that the state and her citizenry incurred in the wake of the flooding were better imagined than experienced.

“The successful completion of the first half of the bridge will enhance seamless movement of people, vehicles, goods and services and also serves as a link connecting Osun State.

Earlier, the representative of Peculiar Ultimate Concern Limited, Engr. Adeleke Olanrewaju, thanked the residents of Olodo area for their patience and cooperation, explaining that the completed bridge was made up of three lanes to ease movement of vehicles.

Adeleke appealed to the residents and road users to always obey the traffic management guidelines put in place to avoid traffic congestion on the bridge.

Speaking with newsmen, some residents of Olodo Bank Area, including the chairman, Olodo Baale Quarters, Adebayo Adeniji;  and Mrs Felicia Oyelakin,  appreciated Governor Makinde for the quick intervention.

They also expressed great relief on the opening of the first section of the bridge to pedestrian and vehicular movements. (NAN)

Gov. AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq of Kwara says the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) is an authentic news source of repute in Africa.

AbdulRazaq said this when he received the Managing Director of NAN, Malam Ali Muhammad Ali in Ilorin.

The governor commended NAN as a reliable source and voice of Africa in propagating Nigeria at national and international levels, adding that one cannot go wrong listening to NAN.

He encouraged the agency to strengthen its ties, propagate Nigeria to garner investments and investors, adding that Kwara State is ready to collaborate with NAN.

“Obviously NAN’s mandate then and up till now is to propagate Nigeria at the sub-national, national and international levels.

“You will recall moments after 1976, in the apartheid era, Africa did not have a voice, the voice of Africa then was NAN.

“NAN is investment tools for Nigeria and we are looking forward to working with the agency.”

He commanded the agency for planning to open district offices in Omu-Aran and Kosubosu in Kwara-South and North respectively.

“Who would have thought of Kosubosu which is next to Chikanda, from Chikanda to Benin Republic, so this tells you that NAN’s footprint is all over the place.

“If you go to remote places, you will get all the right information,” the governor said.

Earlier, NAN MD, Ali, commended Gov. AbdulRazaq for his development strides in infrastructure, healthcare, workers’ welfare, among others in the state.

“Since yesterday that we arrived in the state, we noticed a huge repositioning in the whole state.

“Your re-election is a testimony of what you did in the first tenure.

“Your re-election in Kwara watered the political temperature of Kwara State.”

He said that NAN is the only resident News Agency from Africa, resident in the United Nations.

“We are present in all the 36 states of the nation and in Kwara we have a 12-man team and we hope that with the support of the state government we plan to open our district offices in Kosubosu and Omu-Aran.

“Your Excellency, we will take you as a natural ally of NAN, which prides itself as ‘if you talk to NAN, you are talking to all, and we say, no one knows Nigeria better’.

PDP’ll reclaim Ondo, Makinde, Adeleke boast

    By Adewale Owoade

Oyo State governor, ‘Seyi Makinde, has declared that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) will reclaim Ondo State from the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the November 2024 governorship election.

The governor stated this on Monday, when he hosted leaders of the party from the South-West geopolitical zone, who converged on Ibadan to kick-start the process of reconciling PDP tendencies in Ondo State.

Governor Makinde noted that the PDP family has begun to speak with one voice and that the PDP governorship candidate, Mr. Agboola Ajayi and other parties would team up to ensure that the party has a strong showing at the polls.

According to the governor, all PDP leaders and stakeholders from across the six South-West states are behind the Ondo PDP candidate.

He said: “Our candidate HE Agboola Ajayi is here and the first step forward for us is to reconcile all the tendencies in Ondo State. This is because once we have a unified PDP in Ondo State, we have a path to the Alagbaka Government House.

“To God be the glory, we have spoken as one family. Our candidate has also been able to key into that process.

“So, for us, people should expect a very strong showing from the PDP in Ondo State in November by the grace of God. With our leaders from across the South-West standing behind our candidates in the state, I think it is a strong signal to the present occupier of the Ondo Government House. The PDP is coming and it will happen.”

Similarly, Osun State governor, Senator Ademola Adeleke, said the South-West PDP came together to deliberate on the affairs of the party regarding the forthcoming election in Ondo State.

He added that the South-West PDP leaders congratulated Ajayi, who won the party primary in a transparent process that showed that the PDP is a democratic party that follows due process.

Adeleke said: “As you can see, everyone is happy as it is a family affair. We came over to Oyo State to meet with our brother, His Excellency, Governor Seyi Makinde, to deliberate on the PDP affairs as touching Ondo State.

“Of course, we congratulate our brother, Agboola, who won the primary, which went very well. Everybody now knows that PDP is a democratic party because we followed due process.

“We also want to begin the reconciliation process, because we know some people are upset and we believe our leaders will go back home to bring everybody together. Even Governor Makinde and I would be invited to Akure to see how we can move forward in the state ahead of the election in November.”

Also speaking, the PDP governorship candidate, Mr Agboola Ajayi, thanked Governors Makinde and Adeleke as well as the PDP leaders for their support ahead of the election.

He described the PDP as a formidable party in Ondo State, stating that all PDP members are one family and that they will deliver the state to the PDP fold in the November election.

“The leaders have spoken. They are leading and we will follow. I thank them for their massive support, especially the two South West governors; Governors Seyi Makinde and Adeleke.

“They have been of tremendous support and encouragement for the party in the states, particularly as it affects the forthcoming governorship election in Ondo State. I thank all of them. By the grace of God, I believe victory is ours.

“PDP is very formidable. All of us are here because we believe this is one family and we are going to deliver. Victory is certain for us in the next election,” Ajayi said.

The meeting had in attendance former Governor of Osun State, Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola; former Governor of Ondo State, Dr Olusegun Mimiko; 2023 PDP governorship candidate in Ogun State, Hon. Ladi Adebutu, and a former PDP governorship candidate in Ondo State, Barrister Eyitayo Jegede.

Also in attendance were former Deputy National Chairman of the PDP, Chief Olabode George; PDP Deputy National Chairman (South), Ambassador Taofeek Arapaja; and South-West Chairman of the PDP, Barr. Kamoru Ajisafe, among others.

  • All Nigerians have a role in food security —Obasanjo

All Nigerians have a role in food security —Obasanjo

All Nigerians have a role in food security —Obasanjo

    By Adewale Owoade

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo says everyone, from policy makers to consumers, has a role to ensure food security in Nigeria.

Obasanjo said this in his keynote address at an event organised by Oyo State government with the theme: “Agribusiness for Food Security Initiative”.

The event was organised in collaboration with the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA), in Ibadan.

Obasanjo, who is also an Honorary Ambassador of IITA, commended Gov. Seyi Makinde’s efforts in agribusiness in the state, adding it will play a vital role in Nigeria’s future.

He commended the efforts of women in agribusiness and encouraged them to do more as food security and nutrition would boost employment, foreign exchange and internally generated revenue.

“Everyone has a part to play in ensuring our resilience and sustainable food system, from policy makers to government agencies, seed producers to food processors, from logistics providers to retailers.

“Every point in the process is significant and that is why we are here today to look at how we can harness the potential that exist in agriculture as a business, not as a development project.

“We must join forces leveraging our collective resources to develop strategies and solutions to deploy innovation that exist in research institutes like IITA.

“The research institutes have done tremendous work, they have shown us what can be done, but any researched product that does not go into the hands of the farmer is of no use.

“That is where it is required, not in the shelves of a research organisation but in the hands of the farmers.

“The journey to all food security is a shared responsibility that demands collective action, unwavering commitment and innovative thinking,” Obasanjo said.

In his opening remarks, Gov. Makinde said that the state’s comparative advantage of arable land drives his Roadmap for Accelerated Development, to take the people from poverty to prosperity.

“It was clear that embracing agriculture was the way to go but it was also obvious that using the old method of farming would not produce the desired result.

“We need an economic solution driven by data. We need an achievable strategy powered in a new way of thinking about agriculture.

“One of the platforms set up to drive the new way of thinking about agriculture was the Oyo State Agribusiness Development Agency (OYSADA), headed by Dr Debo Akande.

“So, I will also say that Dr Akande has been instrumental in pushing the new way of practising agriculture in Oyo State and I can tell the whole world that this is yielding dividends.

“To achieve this, we will focus on partnerships to drive agribusiness, working with the private sector and development organisations,” Makinde said.

Earlier in his welcome address, the Africa Continental Director/Director General IITA, Dr Simeon Ehui, said the forum was aimed at addressing pressing issues on food security.

Moreso, to drive positive changes by leveraging major stakeholders to ensure a sustainable future for the present and next generations.

He added that collaboration, innovation and shared commitment are crucial to achieving food security, stressing that agribusiness development is necessary in the whole of Africa.

“In today’s world, the challenges facing our food systems are complex and multifaceted.

“Common change, rapid population growth and social economic disparities as it’s called needs urgent innovative solutions and collaborative action.

“The agribusiness for food security initiative is our collective response to these charges, aiming to harness the power of agribusiness and partnership to create a resilient, inclusive and thriving food system,” Ehui said.

In his presentation, the Executive Adviser to the Governor on Agribusiness, International Cooperation and Development, Dr Debo Akande, underscored the necessity of infrastructure development in achieving food security.

He said there could not be agricultural transformation without rural infrastructural transformation. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)
