Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has presented the 2025 Appropriation Bill to the House of Assembly tagged: “Budget of Stabilisation”, with infrastructure development and education getting the lion’s share.

The governor, while presenting the budget estimate of N678,086,767,332.18 to lawmakers at the Oyo House of Assembly in Ibadan, said education would gulp N145,354,783,399.80, representing 21.44 per cent.

“We are proposing a budget of six hundred and seventy-eight billion, eighty-six million, seven hundred and sixty-seven thousand, three hundred and thirty-two-naira, eighteen kobo (N678,086,767,332.18).

“Of this, N343,028,948,216.20, which is 50.59 per cent is for capital expenditure while N335,057,819,115.98, which is 49.41 per cent is for recurrent expenditure.

“Having looked at the data, including current inflation trends and projections for the year 2025, our Budget of Economic Stabilisation is just about 35 per cent higher than our 2024 Budget of Economic Recovery.

“We strongly believe that this budget will live up to its name as the economic stabilisation that will support our Oyo State Roadmap for Sustainable Development 2023-2027.

“My prayer, Mr Speaker Sir and the Honourable Members of the House, is that you extend the same hand of fellowship and union that we have enjoyed over the years as you deliberate on the 2025 Appropriation Bill and grant its passage to the benefit of residents of our dear state.”

In his address, Speaker of the House of Assembly, Adebo Ogundoyin, commended Makinde for promoting collaborative efforts of stakeholders for the benefit of residents.

“The 2024 budget proposal achieved an impressive 64 per cent success rate, thanks to the collaborative efforts of government branches and stakeholders.

“Building on this momentum, we are hopeful that the 2025 budget proposal will surpass this performance.

“Let me assure that we will set the ball rolling immediately to ensure swift passage of the 2025 Appropriation Bill.” (www.nannews.ng)

Oyo monarch, Oloko of Oko loses land appeal at supreme court.

    By Suleiman Shehu.

Oba Solomon Akinola, the Oloko of Oko in Surulere Local Government area of Oyo State has lost his appeal in the land case he had been contesting with the Aagba kingdom for several years.

In a landmark verdict delivered by Justice I.N.M. Salauwa who led five other justices struck out oba Solomon’s appeal for lack of competence.

The supreme court pronouncement consequently put an end to the tussle which had lingered for a little over 100 years even before Oba Solomon assented the throne of Oko kingdom.

According to the judgment, Aagba land is not a custom tenant to Oko as earlier wrongly believed by the people of Oko, and that Aagba had its own distinct land as previously and rightly held by the Court of appeal Ibadan judicial division.

Earlier on, counsel to the appellant, Mr J.O. Abdulsalam, and Ahmed had moved a notice  of motion to amend their appeal.

However, counsel to people of Aagba,  Mr A.T. Kehinde, (SAN), opposed the amendment on ground that the original notice of appeal was incompetent and that it could not be amended.

Abdulsalam consequently withdrew the appeal after intense argument by both parties.

It would be recalled that Tropical Culture Ltd Farm is the first respondent in the matter and represented by Mr.A. Abdulmalik Esq and Mr O.Kehinde.

The Federal Road Safety Corps(FRSC), Oyo Sector Command took its 2024 ember months campaign against dangerous driving to Oluyole Local Government Area of the state.

The town hall meeting which had in attendance the drivers unions, religious and market leaders, youth groups, security agencies and other critical stakeholders was aimed at sensitising the public to speak up against drivers misconducts on the road.

The FRSC Sector Commander in Oyo State, Mrs Rosemary Alo, in her remarks, noted that passengers have the rights not to be injured, killed, harassed, or have their rights violated while on transit.

Alo disclosed that the theme of the 2024 campaign: “Speak-up Against Dangerous Driving; Crashes Kill More Passengers than Drivers,” was to advocate the rights of passengers to speak up against drivers’ negative attitude.

She added that the town hall meeting was part of FRSC’s public education strategies to engage passengers and encourage them to assert their rights, thereby curbing drivers’ excesses.

“The core of this approach is the alarming number of road traffic crashes in Nigeria, which claim many lives. While various factors contributing to these crashes are driver’s behaviour and passengers’ indifference to reckless driving.

“We are focusing on re-educating passengers and helping them understand their rights to speak up against dangerous driving and report reckless drivers when necessary, “she said.

On his part, the Chairman of Oluyole Local Government, Mr Akeem Olatunji, expressed the council’s readiness to build on existing synergy with the corps, Park Management System(PMS) and other security outfits within the council area.

He urged drivers to avoid drinking while driving, adding that “driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol could lead to loss of life and properties,”

Also, the Chairman of Park Management System in the state, Mr Tomiwa Omolewa, warned drivers against planning multiple trips during festivities, noting that fatigue from multiple journeys could lead both driver and passengers to their early graves.

The chairman who was represented by PMS motorcycle branch chairman, Mr Saheed Omo-owo, urged the drivers to always obey traffic rules and be civil in their conduct with passengers.

The event featured lecture and safety tips from representative of various government security agencies, special marshall and National Orientation Agency (NOA) among others.

“Things are very tough, Nigeria is not funny right now, it depends on the angle in which you’re hit by this economic situation.

“Nigeria is a very peaceful country, we’ve seen in a country where violence springs up just because of little inflation but still Nigerians absorb it, we’ve that adaptation to absorb things and change.

“The economic situation we currently have in the country, it is everybody that is feeling it, I pray people at the helm of economy should be able to think out of it.”

Beneficiaries of the five million naira, who consisted of petty traders and artisans, appreciated the Oyo State Government and urged other leaders to emulate Open-Salawu’s empowerment initiatives.

World Elders’ Day: Oyo Govt. distributes cash, food items to more than 1,000 elderly residents

    By Adewale Owoade

The Oyo State Government has distributed cash and food items to more than 1,000 elderly residents of the state, restating its commitment to catering to the welfare of the elderly in the society.

Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Inclusion, Mrs Toyin Balogun, made this known at an event to commemorate the International Day for the Elderly, themed “ageing with dignity”, in Ibadan.

She said that Gov. Makinde’s administration has put in place several interventions aimed at making life more meaningful for all segments of the society.

“This government is putting in place interventions that are in the best interest of the people.

“We consider our elderly ones as a valued source, because these are people who have lived their lives in the service of their families, children and society at large. We think it is very important for us to make sure that we support them in their old age.

“For this intervention, which is a commemorative event, we feel that instead of dancing, we should do something that will add value to the lives of our elderly demographic.

“Also, we are working in collaboration with a number of NGOs and agencies that have competencies in the care of the elderly.”

Balogun also disclosed plans by the state government to set up a social intervention scheme for the elderly.

“We have put in place plans that are going to be sustainable even beyond the lifetime of this government. One of them is social welfare intervention and we are hoping to be able to take action next year such that the elderly will benefit from stipends once every two or three months.

“In addition to that, we are going to be designating one PHC as an elderly-friendly health care centre. And in the last discussion we had, we said it is better for us to scale our intervention so that we can monitor and measure the result.

“So, our plan is to deploy to the first nine local government areas and after six months, we re-assess and expand,” Balogun said.

Also speaking, the guest lecturer and Nutritionist, Dr Tunde Ajobo, charged members of the society to take care of their old ones so that they can enjoy their old age, just as he called on the government to organise sensitisation programmes for the aged across wards and local government levels.

“Most of them think old age is for sickness. Old age is to be enjoyed and not endured.

“Some of the things that happen in old age are that there is pronounced dehydration. If they don’t take enough water, it will affect them.

“If an elderly begins to skip meals, it’s another thing to actually look into. It will surely have a long term effect, because it can lead to nutrient deficiency.

“As one is ageing, his stomach gets compacted and not as wide as when we are at youth. Even if they are going to take a small meal, it must be adequate and nutritious,” Shobo stated.

Two of the beneficiaries, Mr Olugbenga Jegede and Evangelist Modupe Samuel, who spoke to Journalists at the end of the event, commended the state government for organising the event, which they described as timely.(NAN)

Officials of the Oyo State Government, experts across different fields and other stakeholders gave this advice  at the maiden edition of the Oluyole Economy & Security Summit 2024, with the theme: ‘Expanding Grassroots Economy, Enhancing Community-Based Security.’
Some of the stakeholders, who participated at the summit held at Oluyole Local Government Secretariat, Idi-Ayunre, included the Commissioner for Environment and chairman of the summit; Hon. Abdulmojeed Mogbonjubola; Special Adviser on Security to Governor ‘Seyi Makinde and Chairman of the Oyo State Security Trust Fund, Compol Fatai Owoseni (rtd); Executive Assistant on Security to Governor Makinde; Compol Sunday Odukoya (rtd); and Chairman of the Oyo State Board of Internal Revenue, Mr Femi Awakan.
Others were the Director-General of the Oyo State Mineral Development Agency, Mr Abiodun Oni; Chairman Oyo State Education Trust Fund; Barr. Abdulraheem Abdulrahman; Mr Sunday Aboriomoh and the Alayunre of Idi Ayunre, Oba Muritala Olumini, who represented traditional rulers and leaders.
The stakeholders indicated that an effective collaboration and cooperation between private firms as well as their commitment to corporate social responsibility are indispensable to achieving economic expansion and improved community-based security.
Speaking at the event, the executive chairman of Oluyole Local Government, Engr. Akeem Olatunji, maintained that the summit was organised because the council desired that companies and industries in the local government would be on the same page with the government, for the betterment of the people.
He added that the summit was put together to chart a different path from what the council used to experience in terms of revenue generation, corporate social responsibility, gainful employment for youths in the council and service delivery to the people.
“We want companies, industries to be on the same page with the local government for the betterment of our people in terms of CSR and IGR for the local government.
“You know that the issue of security and economy go hand in hand and there can’t be economic prosperity where there is insecurity. Security is local and we can only do this to complement the efforts of the state government to achieve a good result,” Olatunji said.
In his keynote speech, chairman, Oyo State Board of Internal Revenue, Awakan, highlighted the causes and implications of the current economic downturn in the country and suggested strategic ways of addressing these challenges to improve the economy at the grassroots.
He submitted that economic reform as being championed at the grassroots by the local government chairman was crucial for enhancing the performance of any economy, and therefore, called for careful planning in policy formulation, programme design, and project execution.
The event, which also featured a panel discussion, had experts exploring strategies for promoting collaboration between firms and stakeholders towards the actualisation of the economic expansion agenda of the government and the security of the people.
Speaking on the enhancement of community-based security, Compol Owoseni (rtd) lauded Governor Makinde’s administration for recording unprecedented achievements in the security sector, urging the members of the public to also play their part by providing timely and accurate information using dedicated security channels such as the 615 Code, for swift crime prevention.
He equally commended security agencies in the state for their cooperation and their gallantry in providing improved security.
Owoseni, who noted that Oluyole Local Government should be the richest local government if things were done rightly by corporate entities in the area, faulted the establishments for not exploring the option of cooperation and collaboration, calling on them to turn a new leaf.
Also speaking on community-based security, the Executive Assistant on Security Matters, Odukoya, said Governor Makinde’s unprecedented investments on security have been yielding the desired results with less incidence of kidnapping and other major crimes in the state.
He commended the council chairman for his foresight in organising such an economic and security summit, calling on stakeholders to deepen cooperation in order to engender sustainable development in the local government.
In his submission, the DG Operation Burst, Colonel James Ajibola, who was represented by Dr Oyinlola, described the council chairman as a humanist who combines elitist and local approach to public administration.
Also speaking, the Director General, Oyo State Mineral Resource Development Agency, Okunrinjeje Abiodun Oni lauded the chairman for organising such summit, urging other local governments to emulate such efforts “as it aligns with the vision of Governor Seyi Makinde under his sustainable development agenda particularly for grassroots development.”
Oni described the summit as timely and strategic, while urging the council chairman to dedicate another time towards comprehensively addressing issues bothering on mineral resources and mining activities in the council.
He assured that his agency was fully ready to deepen collaboration with Oluyole Local Government in its economic expansion drive to ensure a ‘win-win’ situation for all stakeholders.
Other stakeholders, who spoke at the event, lamented the dearth of corporate social responsibility from private firms operating in Oluyole Local Government, calling on the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN) to lead the charge by ensuring its members wake up to their responsibilities in order for their host community to experience economic emancipation and grassroots development.
In his contributions, the Operations Counsel for British American Tobacco (BAT), who came to represent the multinational outfit, lauded Engr. Olatunji for organising the summit, noting that he would take the resolutions of the gathering to the BAT management while also ensuring that their charity subsidiary (BAT Foundation) gets intimated with the need to execute some CSR projects and partnership with the council.
At the end of the summit, a communique was issued where stakeholders unanimously commended the quality of the maiden Economy and Security Summit aimed at deepening the economic and social integration process, while consolidating political and overall stability, peace and security in the council and Oyo State.
Addressing newsmen shortly after the event, Olatunji lauded Governor Makinde for transforming the economy of Oyo State through his investments on security and infrastructure.
“There is no gainsaying the fact that the Governor Makinde-led administration has provided unprecedented security logistics, which include vehicles, communication gadgets, and other support to our security agencies towards enhancing adequate security and these have culminated into the safe and business-friendly environment that we have in Oyo State.
“He has also made the whole of Oyo state a construction site through aggressive infrastructure development drive.”
