Eruwa Obaship: Laribikusi Ruling House Accuses Powerful Individuals of Tradition Violation”

    By Adewale Owoade

A bitter dispute has erupted in Eruwa town, Oyo State, over the selection of the next Eleruwa. Prince Olusegun Adewale Oke of the Laribikusi Ruling House has appealed to Governor Seyi Makinde to prevent some powerful individuals from violating the sacred institution of Obaship in Eruwa.

At the heart of the controversy is the rotation of the throne between the two ruling houses: Akalako (female line) and Laribikusi (male line). The 1958 Eleruwa Chieftaincy Declaration established this rotation, which has been maintained until the demise of Oba Bolanle Olaniyan (Gbajumola II) from Akalako ruling house in 1994.

However, Prince Oke claims that the chairman of Ibarapa East local government, has disregarded this tradition by shifting the nomination process to Akalako ruling house, paving the way for the return of deposed Oba Samuel Adegbola. This move, Prince Oke argues, would be a gross injustice, as Laribikusi ruling house is next in line to produce the Eleruwa.

The Laribikusi family has appealed to Governor Makinde to intervene and ensure that the due process is followed, as enshrined in the Eleruwa Chieftaincy Declaration. The family is seeking the governor’s assistance in stopping what they perceive as a violation of their heritage and tradition.

The controversy has sparked concerns about the potential consequences of disregarding the established rotation of the throne. If left unchecked, this could lead to a disproportionate representation of the Akalako ruling house, with nine occupants of the throne compared to Laribikusi’s five.

PAN Proposes Solutions to Save Nigeria’s Poultry Industry from Collapse.

    By Adewale Owoade

The Poultry Association of Nigeria (PAN) has sounded the alarm on the precarious state of the Nigerian poultry industry, which is grappling with skyrocketing feed costs and policy dilemmas.

In a bid to mitigate the crisis, PAN’s Central Working Committee, led by National President Ichie Sunday Ezeobiora, presented a paper outlining the way forward to the Honourable Minister of the Federal Ministry of Livestock Development, Idi Mukhtar Maiha.

According to PAN, the poultry industry’s fortunes are dwindling, resulting in the closure of some farms. Despite past government initiatives to boost poultry production, the industry’s growth momentum appears to have stalled.

Key Challenges Facing the Industry include –  Insufficient soybean production, with the country’s annual requirement standing at 1 million metric tons, far exceeding the current production level of less than 700,000 metric tons.

Exorbitant maize prices, which account for approximately 80% of poultry production costs, alongside soya.
    – Ambiguity surrounding fiscal and monetary policies, as well as the responsible government agencies.

To address these challenges, PAN has urged the government to halt Soybean Exports, Immediately stop the export of soybeans, seeds, and soybean meals, particularly maize, to ensure national food security.

Zero Duties on Imports; Exempt tariffs on imported micro-inputs for poultry production and equipment to reduce production costs.

Streamline Taxation:  Abolish multiple taxation on agricultural commodities and products by state internal revenue boards.

Enhance Quality Control: Reinforce quality control measures for feeds and inputs to guarantee standard supplies to poultry farmers.

Promote Rural Poultry Development: Increase investments in rural infrastructure, agriculture, research, and development to reduce rural-urban migration.

PAN also recommended the creation of a special Poultry Development Fund under the National Agricultural Development Fund to drive sustainable livestock growth and transformation

The Government of Oyo State has assured its residents that it will leave no stone unturned to ensure the safety of everyone in the state.

The assurance came against the backdrop of news that some bandits from the northern parts of the country were infiltrating the state.

Governor Seyi Makinde during a press briefing after the state’s Joint Security Council meeting said all hands were on deck to fish out the bandits and use the instrumentality of the law to deal with them.

Compol Fatai Owoseni (Rtd), Special Adviser on Security to Oyo State Governor, while briefing the media on the resolution of the Security Council, urged the people to go about their lawful activities without any fear.

He assured them that the state government would pull out all stops to secure the life of everyone in the state.
Owoseni said that with the robust synergy among the security agencies in the state, the bandits and other criminal elements had nowhere to hide.

He noted that to strengthen the security network in the state, the Council would hold expanded meetings that would incorporate local government chairmen as well as traditional rulers.

“The essence of this is to ensure that we take security to the grassroots. The local government administration is the third tier of government and is the closest to the people.

“In the same vein, traditional rulers are close to the people and know most people in their domains. By integrating them into the security network, we are taking security to the grassroots and carrying everyone along.

“Security is everybody’s business and we all have a role to play in ensuring that our state is safe from the antics of bandits and other criminal elements.”

He said that the council also discussed the issue of decongesting correctional centres, adding that the state would invoke its power of prerogative of mercy to set free some of the inmates.

Similarly, the Council discussed the issue of the health and wellbeing of inmates of correctional centres with a recommendation that they should be enrolled on the Oyo State Health Insurance Scheme to ensure that they have access to good healthcare.

“A decision on the health insurance scheme for correctional centre inmates would be taken at one of the subsequent Council meetings,” Owoseni said.

Others present at the briefing were the Commissioner for Justice and Attorney General of the State, Mr Abiodun Aikomo; Commissioner of Police, Oyo State Command, CP Ayodele Sonubi.

Others were the Comptroller, Nigerian Correctional Service, Oyo State Command, CC Jaiyeoba Babafemi and the Comptroller Immigration Services, Oyo State Command, Joseph Dada.

Makinde promises to review pensioners’ wages.

    By Adewale Owoade

Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has promised to review pensioners’ wages and gratuities, clear the backlog of arrears and revisit the Contributory Pension Scheme in the state.

Gov. Makinde made these remarks at the 2025 Annual Interfaith Thanksgiving Service, the 6th edition since 2019, held at the Secretariat, Agodi, Ibadan.

He also vowed to get rid of banditry and other crimes, charging traditional rulers to oversee and exercise authority in their domains with a view to helping the government improve security in the state.

The governor commended the state’s workforce and the labour union leaders for their support and cooperation since the inception of his administration, charging them to put in more effort towards validating their values as public/civil servants.

He also congratulated the 45 newly-appointed Permanent Secretaries, emphasising that most of them merited the appointments after going through rigorous examinations and screening exercises.

Makinde advised them to see their appointments as the beginning of good things in their lives.

He said: “I want to use this opportunity to say thank you to our Labour leaders. I sincerely thank you for what you are doing on behalf of our state.

“I have been extremely lucky to have met this set of Labour leaders. You have cooperated with us. Well, we are working towards the same purpose and you have demonstrated that over and over again. So, I sincerely thank you.

“To the workers, your disposition and support have given us a lot of encouragement and I want to urge you to keep it up. The way we lay our bed is the way we will sleep on it. Don’t relent and I believe tomorrow will be better.

“To the new Permanent Secretaries, I want to say congratulations to all of you. I can say it openly and you are there to validate this — 80 per cent of you emerged strictly based on merit. Gone are the days in Oyo State when Permanent Secretaries were appointed on the basis of who you knew or who knew the governor.

“You have done exams, passed in flying colors and you have been appointed Permanent Secretaries.

“By the grace of God, on Monday, I will swear you in. Take this as the beginning of good things in your life.

“This is also a validation of what Oyo State Civil Service stands for. We have said everyone will be rewarded for his hard work. So, those of you striving, your own time will also come.”
He added, “I want to make an announcement here today regarding the pensioners, because we negotiated minimum wage and consequential adjustments but yet to finalise that of the pensioners.

“We will do that this week. We will do it because pensioners must also survive. They have given their best to the state during their prime. The last time the Oyo State Government negotiated a pension review was in 2007.”

The governor also said that his administration would make an effort to fully address the issue of pensioners’ gratuities, which he noted is over N80 billion for state and local government pensioners.

Earlier in their separate remarks, the Speaker of the Oyo State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Adebo Ogundoyin, represented by the Deputy Speaker, Hon. Muhammed Fadeyi, commended the governor for his relentless efforts towards developing the state.

He assured that the 10th Assembly would not relent in performing its constitutional duties as expected.
The Chief Judge of Oyo State, Justice Iyabo Yerima, represented by Justice Olusegun Olagunju, also lauded the governor, charging the workers to rededicate themselves to the service of the state in 2025.

Similarly, in her welcome address, the Oyo State Head of Service, Mrs Olubunmi Oni (mni), appreciated the governor for his unwavering commitment to the welfare of the civil/public servants and pensioners despite the challenging economic situation in the country.

She noted that the governor had improved the quality of lives and also boosted the morale of civil servants by providing the much-needed stability and security for their households.

Oni equally commended the governor for the newly-approved minimum wage, the appointment of unprecedented number of Permanent Secretaries, Surveyor-General and Executive Secretaries in the public/civil service and the approval to conduct 2023 and 2024 promotion exercises for public/civil servants.

Mrs Oni also commended the governor for the mass recruitment across Ministries, Departments and Agencies as well as infrastructure development.

She urged the entire workforce to remain effective, efficient, transparent, disciplined, loyal and supportive towards actualising the Oyo State Roadmap for Sustainable Development, 2023-2027.

In their separate goodwill messages, the State Chairmen of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC), Comrade Kayode Martins and Comrade Bosun Olabiyi, respectively, appreciated Governor Makinde for enhancing the welfare of the workers through prompt payment of salaries, payment of 13th month salary, payment of wage award and the approval of N80,000 minimum wage and consequential adjustment.

They promised continuous and total support to the Makinde administration.

A former Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), in Oyo State, Pastor Benjamen Akanmu, has urged Christian bodies to avoid individualism, emphasising the importance of unity among Christians.

This call to action is reminiscent of Cardinal Robert Sarah’s warning against disunity among Christians, which he described as “counter-witnessing”.

Pastor Akanmu, Regional Superintendent of the Odubanjo Region of Christ Apostolic Church, Nigeria and Overseas, made the remarks while receiving the executive members of the Nigerian Association of Christian Journalists (NACJ), Oyo State Chapter, at his residence.

The delegation was led by the Chairman of the association, Lekan Shobowale.

Pastor Akanmu lamented the alarming level of disunity among Christian faiths, stressing that different denominations were intended to serve as interdependent components, collectively advancing the kingdom of God, rather than engaging in unnecessary rivalry.

The cleric appealed to the leadership of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) and other Christian organisations to foster unity of purpose, guided by the principles of fairness, justice, and equity.

He emphasised the importance of collective action in fulfilling their shared missionary mandate, which remains the cornerstone of their existence.

“Individualism is really causing a huge setback in Christiandom, and this is what is slowing down the progress of Christianity in Nigeria.

“Let’s all unite and fight as one body so as to retain our relevance in the scheme of things , otherwise we will be neglected.”

Mr. Shobowale, NACJ Oyo State Chairman, commended Pastor Akanmu for his visionary leadership and mentorship as the association’s Grand Patron.

He thanked Pastor Akanmu for his guidance and oversight throughout the year, praying for divine strength and wisdom to continue fulfilling his responsibilities.

    .

Shobowale sought Pastor Akanmu’s ongoing support for the Nigerian Association of Christian Journalists’ (NACJ) initiatives in 2025, while also pledging the association’s dedication to spreading the gospel through its coverage of Christian events and activities.

This commitment aligns with the association’s mission to promote Christian values and principles through responsible journalism.
