‎International Museum Day: Stakeholders Advocate Preservation of Nigeria’s Cultural Heritage

    By Seyi Oduneye-Ogunwomoju

‎The Oyo State Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Dr Wasiu Olatunbosun, has appealed to the Federal Government to provide adequate funding for the National Commission for Museums and Monuments (NCMM) to ensure the preservation of Nigeria’s history and cultural heritage.

‎Olatunbosun made the appeal on Thursday during the 2026 International Museum Day celebration organised by the National Museum of Unity, Ibadan.

‎The theme of this year’s celebration is “Museums: Uniting a Divided World.”

‎International Museum Day is observed annually on May 18 to highlight the role of museums in cultural preservation, education and societal development.

‎The commissioner also commended the Curator of the National Museum of Unity, Ibadan, Mrs Pamela Otuka, for the remarkable transformation taking place at the museum.

‎In his message to the event, the Director-General of the NCMM, Mr Olugbile Holloway, said that movable and immovable artefacts, archival documents and other historical materials play vital roles in promoting shared humanity and preserving collective memory.

‎Holloway, who was represented by Otuka, said the theme underscores the role of museums in fostering societal development and uniting communities across the world in the pursuit of peace.

‎“As we all know, the National Commission for Museums and Monuments in Nigeria has consistently fulfilled this role over time.

‎“The museum world, guided by the International Council of Museums (ICOM), has always been sensitive to global developments and has shaped its annual themes accordingly.

‎“Continuing this tradition, ICOM has focused on the disruptions in human relationships caused by crises, conflicts, wars and other troubling developments that threaten the progress humanity has made in recent times.

‎“While various groups continue to address these challenges with varying degrees of success, ICOM’s goal for 2026 is to redirect museum efforts toward leveraging resources through activities, events and dialogue that promote peace and understanding among individuals and communities,” he said.

‎The NCMM boss called on individuals, government agencies, non-governmental organisations and the private sector to partner with the commission in harnessing the vast resources available in museums nationwide and within the creative industry to promote peace and cultural understanding.

‎“The National Commission for Museums and Monuments, which is responsible for establishing public museums and facilitating private museums, has continued to introduce innovations aimed at enhancing visitors’ experiences.

‎“We have launched the country’s first digital museum and upgraded our Lagos exhibition facilities to meet international standards.

‎“These efforts reflect the vision of the current management, with plans underway to elevate selected museums across the country to similar standards.

‎“It is important to remember that museums, regardless of their location, belong to the public and should be supported and protected,” Holloway added.

‎Also speaking at the event, renowned artist and culture promoter, Prince Tunde Odunlade, stressed the need to preserve Nigeria’s history and cultural heritage.

‎“We must preserve our history with all the resources at our disposal. Greater efforts are needed to safeguard our heritage for future generations.

‎“This museum is very important. We have only four National Museums of Unity in Nigeria — located in Ibadan, Enugu, Maiduguri and Sokoto.

‎“Every ethnic group in Nigeria has a part of its identity represented in these museums. They serve as important centres for education and the preservation of our history.

‎“A society without art is like an asylum,” he said.

Makinde Accepts APM Presidential Ticket, Promises Security Reforms and Economic Renewal

    By Adewale Owoade

Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has pledged to pursue a governance agenda anchored on security reforms, economic transparency, accountability and inclusive development after emerging as the consensus presidential candidate of the Allied People’s Movement (APM) for the 2027 general election.

Makinde made the commitment while accepting his nomination at the party’s presidential affirmation ceremony held in Ibadan, where he outlined what he described as a competence-driven vision for rebuilding Nigeria.

The governor said the nation’s current challenges require courageous, compassionate and accountable leadership rather than what he called “recycled approaches” to governance.

Reflecting on the country’s worsening security situation, particularly the recent wave of kidnappings and abductions, Makinde promised to champion far-reaching reforms aimed at decentralising Nigeria’s security architecture and empowering sub-national governments to respond more effectively to security threats.

“I stand before you today with deep humility and a profound sense of responsibility as I accept the nomination to serve as the Presidential Candidate of the Allied People’s Movement for the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

“Ordinarily, this would be a moment purely for celebration. However, recent security challenges in Oyo State and across the country have turned it into a moment of sober reflection.

“Today, innocent schoolchildren and citizens abducted by criminals remain in captivity. As Governor of Oyo State, I bear the responsibility of being called the Chief Security Officer of the state, yet I do not have constitutional control over the security agencies required to fully address these threats.

“No governor should bear responsibility without the authority needed to act.

“As President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, by the grace of God, I will work to reform our national security architecture so that states are no longer left helpless in moments of crisis.

“The decentralisation necessary for effective security management will be prioritised. The safety and security of Nigerians will never be treated as a political slogan. Under my leadership, it will be a sacred national responsibility,” Makinde said.

He added that Nigeria possesses the capacity to rebuild its economy through honesty, fiscal discipline and practical reforms capable of stimulating growth and restoring public confidence.

Earlier, APM National Chairman, Yusuf Dantale, formally affirmed Makinde as the party’s consensus presidential candidate, describing him as a courageous leader, political strategist and proven administrator.

According to Dantale, Makinde’s record in Oyo State demonstrates his capacity to provide purposeful leadership at the national level.

“With his emergence today as the APM Presidential Candidate, the long-awaited journey to the Presidency has begun.

“The destiny of Nigeria is at stake. This is the time to reset the nation and redirect it toward justice, equity, prosperity, dignity and sustainable development.

“It is time to return power to the people from whom sovereignty truly derives.

“It is time for compassionate leadership that will address economic hardship, insecurity, unemployment and social inequality.

“It is time to create opportunities at home so that Nigerians will no longer be forced to seek survival abroad under difficult circumstances,” he said.

In his welcome address, the APM governorship candidate in Oyo State, Abimbola Adekanmbi, said the coalition involving the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), APM and other progressive political forces was united by a common vision for national transformation.

Adekanmbi noted that the achievements recorded under Makinde’s administration in Oyo State could be replicated across the country.

“We are confident that the leadership qualities demonstrated by Governor Makinde in Oyo State can be brought to bear at the national level.

“In the areas of infrastructure development, security, economic growth, good governance and improved standards of living, his administration has delivered tangible results.

“We believe that with the same commitment and vision, he can provide effective leadership for the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

“That is why we are gathered here today—to affirm our support and send a clear message to Nigerians that through unity and collective effort, we can build a more prosperous, secure and united nation,” Adekanmbi stated.

Also speaking, Bauchi State Deputy Governor, Mohammed  Jatau, and the APM governorship candidate in Lagos State, Laja Adeoye, expressed confidence in Makinde’s leadership credentials, saying the party was proud to present him to Nigerians as its presidential candidate for the 2027 election.

The event attracted party leaders and political stakeholders from across the country, including Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed, represented by Deputy Governor Jatau, APM state chairpersons, representatives of the PDP, as well as officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).(NAN)

Gov. Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has charged residents of Oyo State and Nigerians at large to de-emphasise ethnic and religious differences and instead focus on the shared values that unite the people.

Makinde, who noted that the general elections would hold within the next eight months, called on politicians and citizens alike to place the interest of Oyo State and Nigeria above partisan considerations.

Speaking on the security challenges confronting the state, particularly the recent abduction of schoolchildren in Oriire Local Government Area, the governor assured families of the victims that the government was working tirelessly to secure their safe return.

Earlier in his remarks, the Deputy Governor of Oyo State, Bayo Lawal, who led the delegation, commended the governor for what he described as purposeful and visionary leadership.

He said Makinde’s style of governance had continued to attract recognition beyond Oyo State, describing him as a strong political force in the country.

Lawal urged residents, particularly Muslim faithful, to continue praying for the success of the administration and for lasting peace in the state, stressing that the government needed the support, understanding and prayers of the people to further deepen stability, unity and prosperity in Oyo State.

‎The Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, in collaboration with the National Horticultural Research Institute (NIHORT), has trained 67 farmers on rapid multiplication and orchard management of the newly released HORTIPLAN and HORTIBAN plantain and banana varieties in Ile-Ife, Osun State.

‎The beneficiaries, drawn from the Agric Mate Farewell to Poverty Association of Nigeria, participated in the training held at Akogun Olusidodo Hall, Ondo Road, Ile-Ife.

‎HORTIPLAN and HORTIBAN are newly developed, registered and released plantain and banana varieties by NIHORT.

The varieties are high-yielding, possess high suckering ability, are tolerant to nematodes and weevils, and have long shelf life.

‎The improved varieties are also suitable for boiling, frying, roasting and flour production, while adapting well to diverse agro-ecological zones across the country.

‎The training brought together stakeholders in the plantain and banana value chain, including men, women and youths from Ile-Ife and surrounding communities.

‎A team of NIHORT scientists and technologists guided participants through both theoretical and practical sessions on rapid multiplication techniques, orchard management, pest and disease control, economics of production, record keeping and marketing strategies.

‎Speaking at the event, the Executive Director of NIHORT, Prof. Muhammad Lawal Attanda, represented by the Head of the Farming Systems and Extension Department, Dr. Iyabo Adeoye, said the initiative would strengthen the Federal Government’s agricultural development drive and improve food security.

‎She noted that the training would enhance plantain and banana production, reduce post-harvest losses and improve the incomes of farming households.

‎According to her, plantain remains a major food security crop and a reliable source of income for smallholder farmers because it is easier to cultivate and maintain than many other cash crops that require huge financial investments.

‎She described plantain farming as a low-capital but highly profitable agribusiness, adding that most Nigerian soils are suitable for its cultivation.

‎Adeoye further stated that plantain and banana serve as raw materials for several processed products, including confectionery flour, infant meals, plantain chips and banana chips.

‎She stressed that sustained capacity building and stakeholder engagement on innovations such as HORTIPLAN1, HORTIPLAN2, HORTIBAN1 and HORTIBAN2 are essential for increasing production, value addition and marketing within the plantain and banana value chain.

‎She urged participants to maximise the knowledge and skills acquired during the training.

‎The Chairman of the Agric Mate Farewell to Poverty Association, Chief Isaac Omidiora, and the Secretary, Mr. Abdul Haleem Sulyman, commended the Federal Government and NIHORT for the initiative, noting that it would significantly boost plantain and banana productivity in Osun State.

‎They also praised NIHORT for developing improved horticultural crop varieties aimed at enhancing food security in Nigeria.

‎Participants expressed appreciation to the Federal Government, the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, and NIHORT, saying the training would improve their production, management and marketing capacities.

‎Certificates of participation, training manuals and suckers of the newly released varieties were distributed to participants at the end of the programme.

‎The initiative forms part of NIHORT’s public engagement efforts in support of the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope agenda on food security and employment generation.

‎The former Minister of Sports and Special Duties, urged the aspirants to regard the primary election as a family affair and support whoever eventually emerges as the party’s candidate.

Protest Erupts in Oyo APC Over Alleged Candidate Substitution.

    ‎By Adewale Owoade.

‎Some members of the Oyo State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ward 12, Ibadan South West Local Government Area, staged a protest over the alleged substitution of the name of Hon. Rotimi Ajanaku.

‎Ajanaku contested in the APC primary election for the Ibadan South West/North West Federal Constituency held on Saturday, May 16.

‎The protesters, who gathered in large numbers, claimed that Ajanaku emerged winner of the primary election but that another name later surfaced as the party’s candidate.

‎They called on the national and state leadership of the APC to immediately recognise and officially announce Ajanaku as the party’s candidate for the constituency ahead of the forthcoming general election.

‎Addressing journalists during the protest, a House of Assembly aspirant, Hon. Adepoju Popoola, appealed to APC leaders in Abuja and Oyo State to urgently intervene in the matter to prevent further discontent among party members.

‎According to him, Ajanaku enjoys widespread acceptance among party members and residents of the constituency because of his consistency, accessibility, and contributions to the area.

‎“Hon. Rotimi Ajanaku was declared winner after the primary election, only for another name to emerge afterward. That is why we are calling on the party leadership to correct the situation,” he said.

‎Popoola added that the protesters were agitating to protect the party’s chances in the general election.

‎“We do not want APC to lose the election. This is an opportunity for the party to reclaim the constituency, and the wishes of party members must be respected,” he added.

‎Also speaking, Engr. Balogun Moyosoreoluwa urged the party leadership to carefully examine the complaints raised by members in Ward 12.

‎He noted that the ward had historically played a major role in determining electoral outcomes in both state and federal elections, including governorship contests, and should not be ignored in critical party decisions.

‎The protesters further urged the APC leadership to uphold fairness, transparency, and internal democracy by recognising Ajanaku as the duly elected candidate, warning that failure to address the issue could affect party unity and mobilisation efforts ahead of the general election.

‎Reacting to the protest, the APC Public Secretary in Oyo State, Olawale Sadare, said the party was not aware of any substitution.

‎He, however, advised aggrieved members to channel their complaints to the party’s appeal committee, which was established to receive grievances and make appropriate recommendations to the national leadership.
