‎The organiser of the “Believers Talent Competition”, Modupeola Awofolaju, has urged the government to create a more enabling environment for youth development programmes, rather than imposing restrictions.

‎Speaking at the Believers Talent Competition held at an Event Centre, Akobo, Ibadan, emphasised the need for collective efforts to nurture the next generation of talented Nigerians.

‎Awofolaju called on government agencies, parents, and private organisations to collaborate in empowering young people with skills and purpose.

‎” The teenagers, if we don’t catch them young now, they will do the otherwise, so am encouraging other people as well, to do this, because they are the future.

“Catch them young now let model them in the way of the Lord so that our future will be a safe place.

“If government can give us an open arm, there is still restrictions of religious crisis which is not even necessary to get to these children.

“I’m begging on the government to let us do this together, because if these children can turn out right, I can tell you Nigeria will be better.

“We have talented children, if government can really support us and let do this together, we can assure you that the children will turn out even far better than what we can expect‎,” Awofolaju said.

‎Guest speaker, Pastor Tayo Ogunleye of Harvesters Church, Ibadan, who spoke on “Unveiling the Power Within You’, challenged educators and policymakers to review Nigeria’s outdated school curriculum to accommodate creativity and practical skill development.

‎ “Education has gone beyond just following letters, it is time for us to begin to look beyond all of that. People and children particularly can do a lot of things.

“So, I believe the schools and institutions of learning should begin to look beyond the curriculum or already set standards that had been in place for decades which is what we keep following and is killing the giants that are on the inside of them.

“I believe that government would begin to look in this direction and help our children, when they do that am sure we will have a greater nation full of genius that can make our nation to be great,” he stated.

‎One of the participants, Mariam Usman of Angels College, who won a scholarship after topping the Art Category, described the experience as life-changing.

‎“My victory shows that my talent means a lot and I can do better,” she said.

The event showcased creativity across art, music, and dance, featured spirited performances from Angels College, Living Stone College, J Nissi College, and Akobo Baptist Church Teenagers Fellowship.

‎A highlight of the event was the unveiling of Mrs Awofolaju’s new book, “DISTRACTION — Overcoming the Subtle War Against Focus,” which she said was inspired by the need to help young people remain purpose-driven in an age of noise and confusion.

And so Ibadan dry port, Moniya dry port serves that assignment.

‎”The beneficial effect of the partnership would resonate on our people and the benefits would not tell anybody whether the person is APC or PDP or ANPP or whatever. It is to the people and that’s the focus of this administration,” Lawal emphasised.

‎Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Gboyega Oyetola, represented by Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Mr. Michael Olufemi, noted that the land allocation highlights the shared vision between the federal and state governments to expand the nation’s economy.

‎He pledged quicker advancement of the project without failing to partner the Nigeria Shippers Council as to fulfil its due target.

‎“This collaboration underscores how Federal and State partnership can drive sustainable development and deliver enduring value to our people.

‎”When operational, it will strengthen regional competitiveness, create jobs and enhance Nigeria’s logistic chain.

‎”We deeply appreciate the steadfastness of His Excellency, the governor of Oyo State, Engineer Seyi Makinde, FMSE, and the State Executive Council for this very patriotic gesture.

‎”It aligns with the renewed hope agenda of Mr. President, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR. Particularly in promoting blue economy as a driver of inclusive growth.

‎”Let me assure you, that under the leadership of Honourable minister, His Excellency Adegboyega Oyetola, CON, the ministry would ensure that this project advances swiftly through its design, regulatory and implementation phases.

‎”We are working closely with the Nigerian Shippers’ Council, and other stakeholders to make this vision a quick reality.”

‎Earlier, Oyo State Commissioner for Lands, Housing and Urban Development, Williams Akin-Funmilayo said the documentation will formalise the interest of the federal government in its quest for partnership with Oyo State on Blue Economy on 26th June, 2024 believing the partnership will enhance mutual benefits to the interest of the public..

‎”To be precise, 26th of June, 2024, we received correspondence from the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, showing interest in partnering with Oyo State for the development of the dry port.

‎”His Excellency, Engineer Seyi Makinde, on 2nd of August, gave an approval that 90.26 hectares of land should be given to them for that project. I once again want to appreciate you for coming.

‎”Thank you for partnering with Oyo State and I hope and I believe at the end of it all, it’s going to be a mutual benefit exercise and program for Oyo State,” he said.

‎ Also, Director of Nigeria Shippers Council, Ahmadu Yahaya Gatta said the marine economy will further serve an extension of seaports, direct services to import and exports with positive impacts on regional economy including agriculture, logistics, among others.

‎””This event marks a significant milestone in our collective effort to expand Nigerian Transport infrastructure, strengthen our logistics team and bring shipping activities closer to the hinterland,” he said.

‎Dr. Yinka Ayefele, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Fresh FM Nigeria, has urged the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) to thoroughly vet applicants before granting broadcasting licences.

‎He said this was necessary to maintain professionalism and high standards in the industry.

‎Ayefele made the call at a press conference to mark the 10th anniversary of Fresh 105.9 FM, held at the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Secretariat, Iyaganku, Ibadan.

‎“I started transmitting, then a time came that the NBC came, they bombarded my office with DSS and they said Mr Ayefele, where is your licence and I said do I need a licence. They said yes. It took me seven years before I was given the licence.

‎“Ranti Akerele started the journey. If they investigate owners of radio stations the same way I was investigated for seven years, I don’t think that most of these radio stations will exist today. My vision is to change the face of broadcasting,” he said.

‎Ayefele expressed gratitude to those who have supported him, including Gov. Seyi Makinde of Oyo State and his predecessor, late Abiola Ajimobi.

“We have different people in the industry. I have over 400 staffers and I never owe them salary. I prefer impacting lives and building people,” he said.

‎In his address, the Zonal Director of NBC, Jude Ajayi, represented by the Assistant Director, Alhaja Sherifat Mohammed-Koro, charged Fresh FM to continue its good work.

16- year threshold for university admission appropriate, says Education Consultant

    By Adewale Owoade

An Education Consultant, Dr Nelson Ayodele, has stated that 16 years is not too early, rather appropriate for a child to gain admission into a tertiary institution in Nigeria.

He said this during the 9th Annual lecture and award ceremony in commemoration of Abadina College Old Students Association (ACOSA) 48th anniversary in Ibadan with the theme: “Academy Readiness vs Age: Unpacking Nigeria’s University Admission Policy.”

According to him, he supports the federal government’s recent affirmation of 16 years as the general threshold for entry into Nigerian tertiary institutions for the 2025/2026 cycle.

Ayodele, who is also the guest speaker at the event, advised parents to avoid raising children through a “microwave” education system.

“We must maintain a baseline age safeguard: We should retain the 16 years as the minimum entry age for Nigerian universities.

“We should also introduce Readiness-Based Exceptions: Allow academically gifted students below 16 years to apply through a special admission pathway.

“Nigerian Universities admission reflects a deeper question about what higher education should prioritise; protection or potential.

” Age thresholds provide safeguards, but readiness provides opportunity. A hybrid framework that blends both approaches offers a fair, inclusive, and future oriented solution.

“Ultimately, the real question is not whether a student is old enough, but whether a student is ready enough. The shift in focus will strengthen Nigeria’s capacity to protect its students, harness its brightest minds, and advance its national development agenda.

“In this way, Nigeria can move beyond oscillating debate and adopt evidence-based admissions policy that prepares its students for academic success, personal growth, and national development,” Ayodele said.

Also, a Professor of Industrial Education and Training in the Department of Adult Education, University of Ibadan,

Prof. Kehinde Kester identified parents being in a hurry to push their children into the university as one of the problems.

“The parents will always say that the child is supper brilliant, they will allow him/her to jump class, this is also where we have a problem.”

‎Oyo State Commissioner for Education, Science, and Technology, Hon. Olusegun Olayiwola appreciated the alumni of the school for their contributions towards the development of the school.

Olayiwola, represented by the Local Inspector of Education, Ibadan North, Adewusi Akorede, said that the state government was ready   to transform and reposition the education sector in the state.

“Let me inform you that the present administration under the leadership of the Governor, Seyi Makinde (FNSE) is ever-ready to transform and reposition the state’s education sector

“As government and promoter of quality education, we have put in place measures to track the development of education. On behalf of the government, I wish to seek the cooperation and collaboration of education stakeholders in this regard.

‎In his welcome address, the President, ACOSA National Executive Committee, Andrew Oshiomogho, said that the annual event was to award the current students of Abadina College, who   excelled academically.

‎” In recent years it evolved to an avenue to honour members of the public for their tenacious and ingrained impacts in the society.

“It also allows for discussion on topical issues along the academic terrain and other pressing matters.

‎” This year’s event also aligns with the recent government policy on education at the Tertiary level as it discusses age restriction into the various tertiary institutions in Nigeria,” he said.

Highlight of the event was a presentation of 370,000 niara Cash Prize to Kareem Olagunju, who emerged as the best student in JAMB, Further Maths, Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry (NAN)

Oyo inaugurates MAMII Task Force to save mothers, newborns

    By Adewale Owoade

The Oyo State Government has inaugurated the Maternal Mortality Reduction Innovation Initiative (MAMII) Task Force to curb maternal and infant deaths across the state.

The state also received the Action Plan, Activation Plaque, and implementation strategy for the initiative during the inauguration at the Molete Primary Health Centre, Ibadan.

Gov. Seyi Makinde, represented by the wife of the Deputy Governor, Chief Ajibola Lawal, described MAMII as a renewed call to protect mothers, safeguard newborns, and strengthen the healthcare system.

“MAMII, as conceived by the Federal Ministry of Health and supported by the Oyo State Government, represents a bold step toward reversing this unacceptable trend.

“Through this initiative, we are bringing together innovation, data, and collaboration under the unified vision of SWAP (One Plan, One Budget, One Conversation).

“In Oyo State, the burden of maternal death is saddening, however, we are glad to be among the states selected to implement this landmark initiative. Our commitment is firm to strengthen our health facilities, empower our healthcare providers, and ensure that every pregnant woman and newborn receives the care they deserve.

“Together, we can make maternal and newborn deaths a thing of the past in Oyo State. Together, we can build a system where every birth is celebrated, not mourned,” he says.

Commissioner for Health, Dr. Oluwaserimi Ajetunmobi, said members of the task force are carefully selected from key health agencies, including the Primary Healthcare Board, Hospital Management Board, Health Insurance Agency, and Emergency Services, to ensure effective coordination.

“So, they are to see that we implement the plan for Oyo State, and what is the goal? The goal is to reduce maternal mortality rate and neonatal mortality rate in Oyo State.

“We want a significant reduction — now it is about 370 — and we aim for a 50 percent reduction in the next two years by the grace of God,” she says.

National Coordinator of the Sector-Wide Approach (SWAP), Dr. Muntaga Sodiq-Umar, represented by Iyahen Omoruyi, and Oyo State MAMII Coordinator, Dr. Oluwatunmise Adeagbo, expressed optimism that the task team will work with both national and state structures to bridge gaps in maternal health service delivery.

Permanent Secretary, Oyo State Ministry of Health, Dr. Akintunde Ayinde, described the initiative as a movement to restore dignity to motherhood and protect the most vulnerable.

“Let me emphasise that this initiative is not just a programme, it is a movement to restore dignity to motherhood, to protect the most vulnerable, and to fulfil our moral and constitutional duty to safeguard life.

“Our approach is both technical and humane — guided by evidence, sustained by empathy, and strengthened by collaboration.

“Let us continue together to build a future where no woman dies while giving life, no child is lost to preventable causes, and no community is left behind in the march towards equity and wellbeing,” he says.

Stakeholders at the event pledge their commitment to supporting the initiative, while pregnant women present receive cash gifts.

The event also features drama, songs, and moving testimonials from women who successfully deliver under the MAMII-supported care system. (NAN)
