Oyo State governor, ‘Seyi Makinde, has stated that his administration will continue to do everything possible to transform markets across the state and ensure that traders are able to carry out their businesses in safe and secure spaces.

The governor, who was represented by the Deputy Governor, Barr. Bayol Lawal, stated this during the commissioning of the Omituntun Ultramodern Market, Omi Adio, Ibadan.

He maintained that the market, with 406 lockup shops, 56 open stalls, administrative office, security post, clear walkway and toilets, among other facilities, is the fourth of its kind in the governor’s two terms of office, with the Akesan Ultramodern Market, Oyo; Akinyele Farmers’ Market, Ibadan and the Kajola Ultramodern Market, Ogbomoso South Local Government, having come earlier.

According to the governor, the idea of building ultramodern markets is important to the government, as it intends to replicate the initiative across the state so that Oyo State traders won’t continue to ply their trades by the roadside.

He said: “I am happy that everybody here knows the history of this market and we thank God that the dream is now a reality.

“Planning is very key and essential; what we have come to commission here today will be replicated in many places so that our traders won’t stay on the road selling their things. If you go abroad, this is the standard and that is the same thing we are replicating in our state.

“I believe it will be easy to regulate the activities of traders here. These shops would not be allocated to people based on double standards. It will be on a one-man, one-shop basis. Also, there will be market management here to ensure that there is no abuse.

“Those who have been displaced will have the opportunity of right of first refusal. They would be the first set of people to come and the needful will be done for them. We must let sanity prevail.

“There will also be provision for security, because we all know the insecurity situation across the country.”

Speaking earlier, the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters, Hon. Demola Ojo, said the project is a testament to the governor’s commitment to creating a conducive environment for businesses.

He said: “This project is a testament to this administration’s pledge and commitment to creating an enabling environment for business, commerce and community development.

“The construction of the ultramodern market at Sasa in Akinyele Local Government; Akesan ultramodern market in Oyo and Kajola ultramodern market at Arowomole, Ogbomoso are some related achievements to be proud of under this administration.

“To our traders and business owners, this market has been built with you in mind. It is equipped with 406 lockup shops, 56 open stalls, office complex, clear walkway, adequate water supply, clean toilet and sanitation facilities, proper waste management systems, fire safety installations, spacious parking areas and other security features.

“To everyone that will use this facility, I would like to say that to whom much is given, much is expected. It is your duty to ensure that the project is well-managed and maintained and that the aim for which it was constructed is not defeated.

“Without any iota of doubts, I believe the State Government under His Excellency is still on course as regard the four (4) pillars of the Roadmap to Sustainable Development, Omituntun 2.0; which are Economy, Education, Healthcare and Security and I can assure you that the dividends of democracy will be extended to all and sundry.”

Asiwaju of Ido Local Government and Bashorun Bamofin of Ibadanland, Chief Niyi Akintola, who welcomed dignitaries to the event, said the ultramodern market “will truly make life better for our people.”

He noted that the local government has experienced massive transformation under Governor Makinde’s leadership, which genuinely cares about the welfare of the people of Ido and the entire Oyo State.

Akintola listed some of the projects executed by the governor in Ido Local Government, including the Ilaju Garri Processing Factory in Ido; the 10.3 km Ido-Omi Adio Road, which was last constructed in 1992: the Eleyele–Ologuneru–Ido Road; the ongoing 48km Ido–Eruwa Road connecting Ibadan and Ibarapa zones; the Apete–Akufo Road.

The Akufo to Alabata Road; the Owode Housing Estate road from Ward 7 to Akala Way; Ward 10 to Challenge and the boundary with Oluyole Local Government; the Ultra-Modern Motor Park at Owode Housing Estate, easing transportation for commuters and the rehabilitation of the Omi-Adio to Alakaso Village Road, which houses the Ultramodern Ladoke Akintola Railway Station.

Similarly, the Chairman, Ido Local Government, Hon. Sheriff Adeojo, said the construction of the ultramodern market by the local government was a fulfillment of Governor Makinde’s campaign promise and a delivery of the dividend of democracy to the people.

He declared that the Makinde administration has impacted positively on the people of the state through various programmes and policies.

He said: “It is, indeed, a feeling of joy for me to welcome our shining light, the Executive Governor of Oyo State, His Excellency Seyi Makinde, to Ido Local Government.

“I also welcome my father, His Imperial Majesty, Oba Senator Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja, and everyone else to this noble gathering to the commissioning of Omituntun Ultramodern Market, Omi Adio, executed by the present administration in the Ido Local Government.

“The commissioning of this project is to enable the masses to enjoy the dividends of democracy, as encapsulated in the campaign promises of Governor Makinde in ensuring safe and secure marketplaces for traders within the state.

“Now, on His Excellency’s directive, we will move from the roadside to the Omituntun Ultramodern Market, which has 406 lockup shops in Block 8A and 56 open stalls.

“This Omituntun Ultramodern Market is built on a parcel of land containing an area of approximately 9,000 square metres donated by the Olomi Traditional Council, Ido Local Government.

“My appeal to the traders is to make the best use of this great opportunity. There is no gainsaying the fact that today’s programme is a great testament to Governor Makinde’s high sense of responsibility to and great love for residents of the state.

“I make bold to say that the present administration in Oyo State has greatly impacted positively on the lives of the people in the state. The government is executing many laudable and landmark projects and programmes, including maintenance of peace and security, improvement of the economy, construction and renovation of primary health centres and general hospitals, urban renewal projects, repositioning of public services, resuscitation of water supply systems, among others.

“Distinguished ladies and gentlemen, while thanking you for your noble presence here today, please permit me to remind you once again that the present government in the state is a people-friendly government, a government that wants progress for all and sundry, a government that is doing everything possible to make sure all live happily and benefit maximally from government and its activities.

“I want to urge you all to continue to give your maximum cooperation and support to the governor’s leadership.”

The event was attended by the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Ladoja and other traditional rulers; commissioners; Chairmen of Local Governments in Oyo State and other dignitaries.

Oyo Govt Vows to Secure Owode Estate Phase II, Revoke Undeveloped Plots

    By  Adewale Owoade

The Oyo State Housing Corporation has conducted a fact-finding mission to the Owode Housing Estate Phase II, Apata, Ibadan, urging those yet to develop their allotted lands in the estate to do so in order to avoid losing such lands.

This is sequel to an outcry by residents over insecurity and constant attacks by men of the underworld using the area as a hideout.

Residents of Owode Estate Phase II had earlier sent a Save Our Soul message to the Corporation, decrying the spate of insecurity in the estate, noting that the massive forest in the estate had become a criminal hideout and that the few residents, who had developed the plots,  could not sleep with their two eyes closed.

Speaking shortly after conducting newsmen round the wide expanse of land, chairman of the Oyo State Housing Corporation, Hon. Demola Omotosho, pointed out that though the estate was inaugurated close to 50 years ago, only about 20 per cent of it had been developed.

He noted that the fact-finding mission to the estate with newsmen became imperative following protests from residents, who reported cases of burglary, rape, and violent attacks.

Omotosho pointed out that a recent incident involving a 76-year-old man who was brutally attacked, triggered the latest round of protests from residents, who had developed their plots but were made to live at the mercy of allottees, who failed to develop theirs and whose lands have become criminal hideouts.

He decried that despite the estate having been established in the 70s, there are close to 1,000 hectares of undeveloped lands.

Omotosho maintained that in order to curb the insecurity in the axis, the state government had called for a Public-Private Partnership to transform the Owode Phase II into a residential district.

Assuring residents that significant development would take place between now and June 2026, Omotosho noted that the Corporation would put up a Police Post, an Amotekun security base and also install solar-powered streetlights across the estate.

He added that similar interventions are underway in Ajoda New Town, where the first batch of 1,000 housing units are expected to be completed and delivered by June next year.

Fielding questions from newsmen on the likelihood of an outcry from allottees, Omotosho noted that many allottees have held the lands for decades without developing them, despite the laws of the Housing Corporation indicating that any plot that is not developed to a habitable level within two to three years would be revoked by the government.

Omotosho stated that the failure to develop the allotted plots had resulted in a grave danger for residents of the estate, with incessant attacks on residents including armed robbery, rape and other crimes perpetuated by criminals who are using the thick bushes, which a larger part of the estate have become, as hideouts.

He declared that the Corporation would revoke the undeveloped plots, while those who are ready to develop immediately should approach the Corporation for a discussion, explaining that the move to revoke is backed by the Oyo State Housing Corporation Law of 2001.

Which stipulates “that any plot left undeveloped for more than two years, or any allocation not fully paid for within twelve months, is automatically revoked.”

He said: “We have allocated lands to people and our desire is that they build. But now that they have not developed the lands, the lives of those who have built are in danger.

“These persons whose lands we are revoking have had our allocation papers for years; some for 25 years and some more. What have they been doing? When they were taking this land, they knew that if they would not develop the land in two years, it would be revoked.

“So, we are not the ones revoking the lands, it is the law and their unwillingness to build.

“If you have paid a certain amount of money, our law says you must finish paying within 12 calendar months. If you don’t pay, such a contract becomes null and void and I don’t even need to get back to you. So, that is the issue.”

He added that the government had to act on what he described as a matter of urgent importance raised by residents of Owode Estate Phase II, clarifying that if and when the Corporation goes ahead with the revocation of undeveloped plots, it should not be blamed for land-grabbing, because the laws of the Corporation were clear about failing to develop an alloted plot.

“We are Oyo State Housing Corporation and not Oyo State Land Corporation, so people cannot get land allocations and keep as souvenirs. If you have your land, we are not taking it away from you if you develop. The only reason we will revoke your land is when you don’t develop the land allocated to you.

“We are alive to our responsibilities. Our duty is to protect lives, enforce the law, and ensure that every estate under the Oyo State Housing Corporation becomes safe and livable,” he said.

Earlier, a representative of the residents of Owode Estate Phase II, Deacon Idowu Aladejobi, said that residents of the estate had, indeed, sent a Save Our Soul to the Oyo State Housing Corporation, noting that criminals frequently hid in the numerous undeveloped plots around the estate, launching attacks on residents both day and night.

According to him, the abandoned lands have become danger zones and that it took repeated complaints to get the attention of the Housing Corporation to identify owners of the undeveloped plots.

He added that residents recently staged a protest to demand effective security and adherence to the initial terms under which lands were allocated noting that the move to revoke the undeveloped plots is a step in the right direction.

He explained that the agreement signed with the Corporation clearly stated that any plot not developed within three years would be revoked and reassigned.

“We want the government to take action on these undeveloped plots. There are people who are ready to build. Those who are not ready should have their lands revoked and given to others who will develop it,” he said.

Aladejobi added that the estate currently lacks a steady security presence, leaving residents to live in fear.

“At night, we sleep with one eye open because anything can happen. We want the government to provide permanent security, if possible, a permanent Amotekun team within the estate,” he appealed.

Other residents, who spoke with newsmen, expressed hope that the inspection and promises made by the Oyo State Housing Corporation would mark the beginning of meaningful action to secure and fully develop the estate.

Energy Sector Gets Boost as National Assembly Vows to Curb Energy Theft.

    By  Adewale Owoade

The National Assembly’s House Committee on Privatisation and Commercialisation has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening legislative measures aimed at curbing energy theft across Nigeria’s power sector.

The Chairman of the Committee Hon. Engr. Hamisu Ibrahim made this assurance during an oversight visit to the Executive Management of Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company Plc (IBEDC) on Wednesday, November 19, 2025.

He disclosed that the National Assembly is currently intensifying efforts on a bill to combat energy theft through stricter penalties, enhanced enforcement, and improved protection of electricity assets.

“Energy theft has become a major obstacle to efficient electricity distribution in Nigeria. We are working on a robust legal framework that will decisively address this menace and safeguard infrastructure investments,” He stated.

He further pledged the Committee’s support in helping electricity distribution companies (DisCos) recover huge outstanding debts owed by federal and state ministries, departments, agencies, and local governments. According to him, the Committee is ready to collaborate with the DisCos to ensure that the debts are duly settled to strengthen liquidity across the power sector.

“I want to assure the DisCos that this Committee is going to stand firm to ensure these debts are recovered,” Hon. Ibrahim added.

Earlier, IBEDC’s Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer, Engr. Francis Agoha, appealed for the National Assembly’s intervention on energy theft and outstanding debts by federal and state institutions.

IBEDC has significantly expanded and rehabilitated its distribution network, improved metering, safety, and customer service delivery.

However, energy theft, vandalism, and outstanding government debts continue to undermine service delivery.

He emphasised that these issues have significantly constrained liquidity across the market, affecting IBEDC’s capacity to further expand and fortify its distribution infrastructure.

Engr. Agoha briefed the Committee on IBEDC’s investments and infrastructure improvements since the 2013 privatisation, highlighting progress made in network expansion, metering, safety, and customer service delivery.

He also outlined the company’s strategic plans for future growth, while noting the challenges faced.

“We have significantly expanded and rehabilitated our distribution network, but the challenges of energy theft, vandalism, and outstanding government debts continue to undermine our service delivery.

“We appreciate the National Assembly’s willingness to intervene,” he said.

The Committee inspected critical distribution infrastructure of IBEDC. The visit formed part of the legislature’s mandate to assess the power sector performance, identify operational challenges, and compliance with regulatory standards since privatisation.

Other members of the Committee present during the visit included Hon. Ganiyu Ayuba Member representing Alimosho Federal Constituency (Lagos), Hon. Donatus Mathew (Kaura Federal Constituency, Kaduna), Hon. Omirin Olusanya (Atakunmosa/Ilesa, Osun), and representatives from the Bureau of Public Enterprises (BPE).

Oyo teacher died of Cancer, not student attack — Report

The death of a teacher at Soun High School, Ogbomoso, Oyo State, Mr Fatai Adegoke, has sparked controversy following claims on social media that he was beaten to death by students.

However, findings by stakeholders and a death certificate issued by LAUTECH Teaching Hospital, Ogbomoso, have confirmed that Adegoke died of Multiple Myeloma, a type of bone cancer.

The death certificate, signed by Dr Akinbola Abraham, listed Multiple Myeloma as the primary cause of death.

Adegoke died on Nov. 4, 2025. Some online reports had alleged that he died from injuries sustained during an attack by four students who were caught gambling.

A delegation from the Oyo State Ministry of Education and the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), led by the Executive Chairperson, Oyo State Teaching Service Commission (TESCOM), Mrs Olubukola Oladipo, visited the school and the widow of the deceased.

The school principal, Mr Ajayi Adeyinka, said although Adegoke had an encounter with four students found gambling, the incident was not responsible for his death.

“It was on May 28, 2025, that Mr Fatai Adegoke, while going round the classes, met four boys playing whot in an empty classroom, which is against the school rules.

“He took them aside for interrogation. One of the boys is a son to his friend. In an attempt to discipline the boy, the boy raised his arm to defend himself, and Mr Adegoke’s hand accidentally hit the boy’s elbow.

“His hand became swollen and the school took him to the hospital for treatment. He returned home the same day,” he said.

Adeyinka said when Adegoke later took ill and was admitted to a private hospital, he facilitated his transfer to LAUTECH Teaching Hospital on Nov. 3 for further treatment.

“We asked the doctor what the issue was, and he told us it was Stage 4 bone marrow cancer with no chance of survival.

“On Nov. 4, around 1:49 p.m., I received a call that he had passed on,” he said.

The Permanent Secretary, Inspectorate of Education, Ogbomoso Zone, Mr Paul Oyedokun, said the school convened a stakeholders’ meeting after the incident to maintain discipline among students, during which all students signed an undertaking to be of good behaviour.

“In a nutshell, it wasn’t the action of the student that led to Mr Adegoke’s death. It was unfortunate that the health complications he had over the years resulted in his demise.

“We commiserate with the family, staff, students and the entire community. Mr Adegoke was a dutiful officer,” he said.

The Oyo State NUT Secretary, Comrade Olukayode Salami, said members contributed funds to support his medical treatment after doctors advised that a bone marrow transplant could help him survive.

The widow of the deceased said her husband had an accident in 2011 but recovered fully. She appealed to the government and well-meaning Nigerians to support her in raising their two surviving children, noting that she had earlier lost two children.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the late Adegoke was a non-teaching staff member at TESCOM before he was converted to teaching staff in 2019 and posted to Soun High School, Ogbomoso, on May 28, 2022. (NAN)

Hundreds of members of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Ido local government, Oyo State, have defected to the All Progressive Congress (APC).

The defection was facilitated by Engr. Aderemi Oseni, the lawmaker representing Ibarapa East/Ido federal constituency at the House of Representatives, through his Remi Oseni Committee of Friends (ROCOF).

Oseni, who is the Chairman, Federal Road Maintenance Agency (FERMA), described the event as unprecedented in the history of Ido local government.

‎He affirmed that APC will defeated PDP in 2027 and return to power in Oyo, come 2027 general elections.

“It is beyond human opinion, God has been the one driving this project and that is why we’ve been receiving over 1500 members of PDP in Ido local government, decamping into Remi Oseni Committee of Friends in APC.

“It is something that is unprecedented, it is something that is unimaginable and in the history of politics in Oyo State. I think this would be the first of its kind and on that note,

“We give all glory to God and we are still expecting more, and we would be moving from local government to local government receiving all PDP and all other political parties, who would be decamping to APC via the vehicle of Remi Oseni Committee of Friends movement.

“We are committed to a common goal, and that common goal is for us to ensure that we work tirelessly, to ensure that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is returned to power in 2027, by the grace of God,” Oseni said.

The defectors, led by Chief Nureni Adeoye, described himself and others as returnees, saying it has been a while they had been with Oseni and praised Oseni’s impact on his constituents and described him as a record breaker.
