Reps probe police over loss of firearms by personnel

The House of Representatives has mandated its committees to investigate the persistent loss of fire arms by personnel of the Nigeria Police Force.

The House on Thursday mandated the Committees on National Security and Intelligence, Police Affairs and Public Accounts, to investigate the persistent firearm loss, the failure of the police force to comply with the Financial Regulations Act, and recommend appropriate punitive measures.

This resolution was reached following a motion moved by Idris Salman, a lawmaker from Kogi State.

In the motion he presented, Mr Salman said there has been an increase in the rate of loss of firearms, and according to him, most of the losses have gone unreported.

He explained that the 2019 Auditor General’s report showed that 178,459 pieces of firearms have gone missing from the armoury.

“Nigeria Police have lost sufficient firearms to arm four full-size infantry divisions which were not reported, thus, violating paragraph 2603 of the Financial Regulations, 2009, which requires officers to report store losses to the head of department or unit within three days if the loss occurs away from headquarters,” he said.

Following the presentation of the motion, it was taken without debate.

Tinubu’s victory at Supreme Court a welcome relief for Nigerians – Buhari

Former President Muhammadu Buhari has described the victory of Bola Tinubu at the Supreme Court as a welcome relief for not just him but the majority of Nigerians.

Recall that the Supreme Court, on Thursday, affirmed President Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress, APC, as the valid winner of the presidential election that held in the country on February 25.

Buhari made reaction in a statement posted by his media aide, Garba Shehu on X (formerly called Twitter) on Thursday.

It reads: “Former President Muhammadu Buhari says the decision to dismiss the appeals by Alhaji Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and Mr. Peter Obi of the Labour Party (LP), by the Supreme Court, is a welcome relief to him and to a majority of the citizens of Nigeria.

“The former President repeated what he said on the earlier 6 September verdict of the Presidential Election Petition Court, which affirmed President @officialABAT‘s victory, that the welcome decision is “a reaffirmation of the will of the majority of the people against the determined will of a hard-fighting minority.”

“Now that we have arrived at the last bus-stop, after a tortuous 8-months of expensive legal journey, the nation deserves a break. The opposition has fought a good fight. Having now exhausted their rights as constitutionally allowed, they should take the hand of fellowship extended by the Tinubu/Shettima

@OfficialAPCNg government. Let them allow the Government to run their administration and the people to enjoy the full benefits of the promises the All Progressives Congress (APC) made.

The former President expressed concern over low voting percentages all over the country, especially in urban areas, and said this should change, given the acceptance and vibrancy of democracy in Nigeria.

“He wishes the President and his team a successful term in office.”

Judgement: ‘Our judicial system has proven itself’ — PDP’s Gov Adeleke hails Tinubu’s victory

Judgement: ‘Our judicial system has proven itself’ — PDP’s Gov Adeleke hails Tinubu’s victory

Gov. Ademola Adeleke has congratulated President Bola Tinubu on the affirmation of his election by the Supreme Court, saying the time to unite for Nigeria is now.

The apex court had on Thursday dismissed the appeals of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Labour Party (LP) and their presidential candidates, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar and Mr Peter Obi.

The appellants had challenged the victory of President Bola Tinubu at the Feb. 25 poll and sought to overturn the verdict of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The supreme court, however, dismissed the appeal, holding that new evidence could not be introduced at the stage of appeal.

In a congratulatory message issued by his spokesperson, Mallam Olawale Rasheed on Thursday in Osogbo, Adeleke said “our judicial system has once again proven itself in tackling disputes that arise from our elections”.

The statement repoted the governor as making the remarks in the presence of the ‘Iyaloja General’ of Nigeria, Folasade Ojo-Tinubu, in Ede.

Ojo-Tinubu, was at Ede, the country home of the governor, to attend the 8th Day Fidau prayer of the father of the state’s Commissioner for Science and Technology, Alhaji Wahab Ayofe.

Adeleke, who noted the finality of the apex court ruling on disputes on the 2023 presidential election, said the resolution of the questions that surrounded the election would bring about focus in confronting the many challenges facing Nigeria.

He commended the main opposition candidate in the election for deepening the country’s electoral jurisprudence by testing their complaints at the court of law.

“On behalf of the good people of Osun State, I congratulate President Tinubu on his judicial victory at the apex court.

“It is my hope that your administration will bring progress, unity, and prosperity to our nation, and I want to restate my commitment to partner you in offering good governance for our people,” he said.

  • Breaking: Supreme Court upholds President Tinubu’s election, dismisses Atiku’s appeal

Breaking: Supreme Court upholds President Tinubu’s election, dismisses Atiku’s appeal

The Supreme Court, on Thursday, affirmed President Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress, APC, as the valid winner of the presidential election that held in the country on February 25.

The apex court, in its lead judgement that was prepared and read by Justice Inyang Okoro, held that there was no merit in the petition that a former President and candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, filed to nullify the outcome of the election.

It held that Atiku did not prove that the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, did not substantially comply with provisions of the Electoral Act, in the conduct of the election.

The apex court held that section 185(1) of the Evidence Act provided that an election should not be liable to be invalidated, when alleged non compliance did not substantially affect the outcome of an election.

It held that evidence contained in the record of the appeal showed that the Appellants abandoned the duty imposed on them by the law to not only prove the alleged non compliance, but to establish that failure of INEC to transmit results of the election through its IReV portal, influenced the outcome of the presidential poll.

The Supreme Court said it had in past judgements, made it clear that there was a difference between election result collation system and the IReV portal.

“Where the IReV portal fails, it does not stop the collation which up till the last election was manually done,” the court held.

Nevertheless, it stressed that INEC’s failure to electronically transmit results of the election, denied the electorates the opportunity to follow and cross-check results that were eventually uploaded.

“Truth must be told, the non transmission of results to the IReV portal may also reduce the confidence of the voting population in the electoral process,” the Supreme Court warned.

It held that the unavailability of results on INEC’s IReV portal “for whatever reason, could not be the reason for an election to be nullified.

The apex court held that Atiku and PDP did not prove that they suffered any miscarriage of justice as a result of the dismissal of their petition by the Presidential Election Petition Court, PEPC.

It described as misconceived and misplaced, Atiku’s contention that Tinubu ought not have been declared winner of the presidential election, having failed to secure 25% votes in the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Abuja.

The apex court affirmed the position of the PEPC that the FCT does not have a status that is more special than that of the 36 States of the federation.

It further upheld the striking out the evidence of some of the witnesses that testified for Atiku at the PEPC hearing, adding that most of the witnesses gave “inadmissible hearsay” evidence.

The Appellants did not present any evidence to warrant the interference of the findings of the lower court,” head of the apex court panel, Justice Okoro, added.

On the issue that President Tinubu was involved in a drug related case in the USA that led to the forfeiture of $460, 000, the Supreme Court held that Tinubu raised the issue when the Respondents had already filed their process.

It held that the action denied the Respondents the right to fair hearing.

“The ruling of the lower court is unassailable and this court will not interfere,” it held.

The court held that whereas Atiku alleged that the result that was declared by INEC was not accurate, he, however, failed to put forward their perceived rightful result.

It held that the result announced by INEC was presumed as correct in the absence of “any rival or alternative result.”

“The figure before us shows that the 2nd Respondent won the highest number of votes and was duly declared winner.”

Consequently, the court, resolved all the issues that Atiku raised in his petition, against him.

“On the whole, having resolved all the issues against the Appellants, it is my view that there is no merit in this appeal and it is hereby dismissed.

“Judgement of the lower court delivered on September 6 is hereby affirmed. I shall make no order as to cost,” the Supreme Court held.

It will be recalled that INEC had on March 1, announced that Tinubu of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, won the presidential contest, ahead of 17 other candidates that participated in the poll.

It declared that he garnered a total of 8,794,726 votes to defeat his two major rivals, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, who came second with a total of 6,984,520 votes, and Mr. Peter Obi of the Labour Party, who came third with a total of 6,101,533 votes

  • Five foods to avoid for your breakfast

Five foods to avoid for your breakfast

Have you ever heard of the phrase; ‘you are what you eat’? Nowhere is this more applicable than in the realm of breakfast. The foods we choose in the morning can either power us through the day or leave us feeling like we’re running on empty. It’s breakfast, the meal that lays the foundation for your daily adventure, and it’s time to rethink your choices.

The choices you make in the morning can set the tone for your entire day. But here’s a breakfast revelation – some foods, despite their popularity, can send your energy levels plummeting before noon.

According to Jerlyn Jones, a registered dietitian nutritionist based in the United States, the worst breakfast foods to eat in the morning are those low in fiber and high in added sugar and saturated fat.

Sugary cereals, doughnuts, breakfast pastries, and sugary coffee drinks are loaded with simple sugars.

“These added sugars arrive all at once in your system like a sugar bomb and get converted into calories much more quickly. This can lead to negative health effects,” she added.

Let’s dive into the five foods you should avoid at all costs to ensure your mornings are full of vigor and vitality.

    1. Refined Sugars and Sugary Cereals:

According to health practitioners, breakfast items containing refined sugars, such as those found in cereals, flavored yogurt, and pastries, can cause a quick surge in blood sugar levels. However, this is often followed by a subsequent drop, leading to fatigue and increased hunger shortly after consumption.

    2. Highly Caffeinated Beverages:

Although coffee and energy drinks offer an initial caffeine boost, they might result in a subsequent energy dip as the morning progresses, leaving you feeling tired. Additionally, an excess of caffeine can disturb your sleep patterns.

    3. Dairy and Lactose-Heavy Foods.

For individuals who are lactose intolerant, dairy products like milk and cheese can lead to digestive discomfort. This can cause bloating and discomfort during the morning.

4.Fruit juice: Fruit juice might seem like a healthier alternative to sugary sodas or sweetened teas for quenching your thirst, but it may not be the optimal choice.

Although fruit juice contains essential nutrients and antioxidants, it is often rich in sugar and lacks the fiber found in whole fruits, which can leave you feeling less satisfied.

    5.Breakfast pastries:

Breakfast pastries such as doughnuts, cinnamon rolls, and toaster pastries are often the quick picks on busy mornings.

Yet, these are far from ideal breakfast choices. They are typically packed with sugar, fat, and calories, offering minimal protein and fiber. Consequently, they are unlikely to provide lasting satisfaction, potentially leaving you hungry well before lunch.

It’s best to reserve these breakfast pastries for occasional indulgences or special treats and instead opt for a more balanced meal as your everyday breakfast.
