  • Igbomina People Hail Dr. Oluwatoyin Alabi’s Leadership on Security, Community Development

    Dr Oluwatoyin Alabi

IPUNEC Chairman has been praised for mobilizing vigilance and strengthening collaboration across Kwara South

The people of Igbomina land have lauded the Chairman of the Igbaja Progressive Union National Executive Council (IPUNEC), Dr. Oluwatoyin Alabi, for his proactive leadership and unwavering commitment to enhancing security and community welfare across the region.

In the wake of rising security concerns in parts of Kwara South, Dr. Alabi has been widely recognized for mobilizing community vigilance, strengthening collaboration among local stakeholders, and maintaining active engagement with government agencies to safeguard lives and property.

Observers noted that while local communities play a crucial role in tackling insecurity, many lack the human, material, and financial capacity to do so effectively. They therefore called on the government to increase support and intervention, even as citizens continue to contribute through vigilance and cooperation.

Analysts further linked Igbomina’s developmental setbacks in the past to an overdependence on self-help efforts, which sometimes allowed government institutions to evade their responsibilities.

They stressed that maintaining a balance between community participation and governmental accountability is key to achieving long-term progress.

The security situation in Kwara North was also cited as a point of concern, with reports of increasing banditry in the area. Unlike Igbomina, residents there have been less vocal in demanding decisive action, a factor some believe has worsened insecurity.

Under Dr. Alabi’s stewardship, IPUNEC has earned praise for its inclusive, transparent, and results-oriented leadership style.

His efforts have not only fostered unity among Igbomina communities but also reaffirmed the importance of organized local leadership in addressing security and development challenges from the grassroots.

  • Archbishop Amoo Calls for National Repentance, Integrity to Revive Worsening Economic, Social Challenges

Archbishop Israel Afolabi Amoo of the Anglican Communion , Kwara State has made a strong call for renewed faith, moral integrity, and national repentance amid Nigeria’s worsening economic and social challenges.

The cleric made the call while speaking at the 26th Provincial Council Meeting of the Church of Nigeria, Anglican Communion Ecclesiastical Province of Kwara state, held at Offa, Offa Local Government Area of Kwara State.

The Archbishop said the Nation is currently navigating a multifaceted challenges marked by insecurity, economic challenges, and underlying political tensions been witnessed in various parts of the nation.

The country is besieged by a variety of security threats, ranging from banditry, terrorism, kignapping to insurgency across various parts of the nation.

According to him, the nation is also witnessing conflicts between farmers and harders, which has brought untold hardship to many communities with many families rendered homeless and their means of livelihood completely distrupted.

“This has impacted negatively on the overall Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of the nation.

“The inflation index is on the soaring state and unemployment is rising, which has left a significant number of citizens struggling to meet their basic needs.

“Unfortunately for us, we cannot see any serious attempt by the government to improve our livelihood. Right from the first day of this government, it has been woes upon woes with promises that were never meant to be fulfilled.

“The abrupt removal of the petrol subsidy without proper economic controls was a direct hit on the average Nigerians.

“The collapse of our exchange rate, poor implementation of government policies and the unfortunate compromise of some key arms of government.

“More especially the Legislature have further brought us to a more sorry state. The last General Elections across the nation and the manner of conduct of ensuring elections tribunal activities showed that the judiciary is no longer the hope of the common man.

“All of this has climax to our hopelessness as a nation. It has been bad before, but now the situation is both hopeless and unbearable to say the least.

“It is very disheartening how visionless some of our political leaders are, some of them are not even thinking of how to address some of these unfortunate situations of our nation, and to save the nation from anarchy but on how to win in the coming elections.

“There are lots of internal party tensions, cross-carpeting, back stabbing of political opponents and abuse of the constitution of our nation, all in the bid to hold power endlessly.

“The youth no longer believe that they are the leaders of tomorrow as those in government have refused to leave office. What we see is recycling of the same old people with change of portfolios and political nomenclatures,” he added

Ge pointed out that no sector of the economy is working as it were, education is at its abysmal state, industrialization is low paced with the country virtually importing every product in the market.

“There is no access to stable employment or social support systems fostering a climate of discontentment and political upheaval, with the average Nigerian being the worse hit.

“And we in the faith-based ministries are not left out because we depend on the free will of members of the church. If the members of our congregation are suffering and their welfare not taken care of, they cannot do beyond their means. They can only give what they have. And this has also worsened the challenge of missions and world evangelization and further weakening the moral fabric of the nation.

“There is nothing that makes Sodom and Gomorrah to be destroyed by God that have not taken place in our country. However, we believe that there are a few that are still standing in the gap and standing up for righteousness, Archbishop added

The cleric advised the leaders to make an attempt at solving the challenges of our nation by tackling corruption head on and reinforcing the mechanisms of good governance.

According to him, these are imperative steps towards restoring public confidence and ensuring stability within the nation.

“The challenge of developing a state or nation is not a leadership challenge alone. Both the leadership and followership are involved in this. There is need for a good collaboration and synergy between the leadership and the followership.

” Everyone must resolve to eschew corruption and wickeness in all its ramifications. However as it is often said, everything rises and falls on leadership.

He prayed that that God will arise and do something for us, saying the Church will keep praying for the nation and play our roles as people of God.

He disclosed that the National Church as the Standing Committee acting on behalf of the General Synod has approved the creation of five full-fledged and Ten Missionary Dioceses.

The Missionary Diocese of Oyun with the election of Venerable Solomon Rotimi Adewumi as the Pioneering Bishop was also approved by the general synod.

The Anglican Communion congratulated the Bishop Elect and his wife for this honour and responsibility placed upon them by the Lord.

The Archbishop thanked Bishop & Mrs. Sunday Adewole for their sacrifice and diligence in ensuring the birth of this new “baby” and prayed that the Lord bless will continue to bless the Diocese and Province in Jesus Christ name.

  • Customs extends overtime cargo automation to 120-day

Lagos – The Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Mr Bashir Adeniyi, says the Service has automated the clearance process for overtime cargoes and extended the window to 120 days to facilitate trade.

Adeniyi disclosed this on Monday at a one-day sensitisation programme on the Automation of Overtime Cargo Clearance System for stakeholders.

According to him, the extension will also improve the ease of doing business across the nation’s ports.

The stakeholders include consignees, brokers, terminal operators, and customs officers in Zone ‘A’, Lagos.

He explained that the automation would help resolve delays often caused by abandoned consignments and reduce the volume of letters seeking clearance extensions, which make up nearly 50 per cent of correspondence to his office daily.

“We have created a help desk at the headquarters to prioritise clearance of project cargoes belonging to government agencies.

“Importation is critical to Nigeria’s economic development, and our goal is not just to generate revenue but to ensure goods reach their owners quickly and efficiently,” he said.

Adeniyi added that less than one per cent of cargoes arriving at Nigerian ports in 2024 were classified as overtime and expressed optimism that the new system would reduce this to zero.

He also assured stakeholders of continuous sensitisation sessions to ensure smooth adoption of the process.

The Comptroller-General urged terminal operators, shipping companies, and clearing agents to provide feedback for further improvement.

He noted that some consignments were deliberately abandoned while others faced delays due to network challenges.

“The Overtime Cargo Automation programme is fully developed and ready for deployment.

“This sensitisation is to ensure all stakeholders, terminal operators, shipping companies, and agents, understand the system and work together for success,” Adeniyi said.

In his remarks, Assistant Comptroller-General of Customs, Mr Isah Umar, said that the e-clearance system would simplify procedures, enhance transparency, reduce human interference, and strengthen data integrity for imports and exports.

He explained that the system would also provide automatic records of cargo disposal and harmonise documentation through the use of the Single Goods Declaration (SGD).

Chief Superintendent of Customs, Mr Aliyu Abdulkadir, highlighted that under the Nigeria Customs Service Act 2023, overtime cargoes are subject to disposal after 120 days, while perishable and inflammable items may be disposed of immediately through e-auction or other approved means to prevent accidents.

Similarly, Assistant Comptroller of Customs, Mr Ibrahim Muhammed, walked participants through the ICT processes of the new system.

He said cargoes are classified as overtime after 30 days, with clearance escalated step-by-step from the Area Controller to the zonal level, and to headquarters if unresolved within the stipulated period.

He stressed that the system provides a transparent, efficient, and accountable framework for managing overtime consignments.

Also speaking, the Zonal Coordinator of Zone ‘A’, Assistant Comptroller-General Muhammed Babadede, described NCS as the most digitalised Customs administration in West and Central Africa and commended the Comptroller-General for driving reforms through automation.
