Stakeholders in Enugu East Zone endorse Mbah as sole candidate for 2027 General Election

Political stakeholders in Enugu East Senatorial Zone, on Sunday, endorsed Gov. Peter Mbah as their sole candidate for 2027 Governorship Election in Enugu State due to his exemplary visionary leadership.

The stakeholders, who also cut across community, youth and professional divides, gave the endorsement in a communiqué issued at the end of a Town Hall Meeting in Enugu on Gov. Mbah’s stride in development within 27 months.

The communique said that the people of the zone had reflected on the performance of Mbah and expressed “total satisfaction” with his government, adding that he had kept his campaign promises and surpassed expectations.

“We are indeed proud that Gov. Mbah stands tall as the rave of the moment by every sector and indicator, as far as sub-national governance in Nigeria today is concerned.

“In specifics, we note with pride and commendation that within his first anniversary in office, Mbah administration built from scratch to finish the Enugu Command-and-Control Centre linked to AI-embedded cameras installed across the state.

“It also invested in setting up the Distress Response Squad, a special police unit powered with more than 150 security vehicles with AI-embedded cameras, which are equally linked to the Command-and-Control Centre,” it said.

It said that Mbah had transformed the state to one rated as one of the safest in the country, playing host to Nigeria’s most popular conferences, including Annual General Conference of the NBA with over 20,000 lawyers.

The communique noted the 33 per cent of the state’s annual budget to 260 Smart Schools across the 260 political wards; which translate to about 6,500 digitally-equipped classrooms featuring robust ICT infrastructure and e-libraries among others.

“The construction of 260 Type-2 Primary Healthcare Centres with accompanying staff quarters in 260 wards to provide 24-hour service to every nook and cranny of the state.

“The revival of moribund/abandoned assets, notably: Enugu United Palm Products Limited, completion of the International Conference Centre, reconstruction of Hotel Presidential, and recently, the revamp and upgrade of NigerGas Company Limited, while Sunrise Flour Mills is underway.

“The administration achieved a trailblazing performance in the transport sector by launch of Enugu Air; construction and commissioning of five modern transport terminals as well as launching 100 CNG Mass Transit buses for transit to Enugu.

“The administration has successfully pushed through a concession by the Federal Government that will see to the completion and operationalisation of the international terminal of the Akanu Ibiam International Airport,” it said.

The communiqué hailed Mbah massive road projects in the state, with about 1,000km completed or ongoing; while positioning Enugu as the centre for tourism, including medical tourism; huge investment in agriculture and bumper harvest among others.

“Consequently, the thought leaders, political leaders, professionals, youth leaders, women leaders, traditional rulers, leaders of market associations, trade union leaders, and people of Enugu East Senatorial District unequivocally endorse Mbah for a second term in office.

“If he has done these great works in repositioning Enugu State in just two years, it is only left to imagination what the state would look like at the end of eight years of his administration.

“In endorsing him, we want to state that we are blind to party affiliation. In the face of Nigeria’s fluid party politics, our political party is Dr Peter Ndubuisi Mbah.

“Mbah has shown that he not only has what it takes to turn Enugu State around, but also to take it to the pinnacle of glory where our founding fathers dream of,” it added.

The communique was signed by Dr Ben Nwoye, Leader of Progressives Movement in Enugu State and former Chairman of APC in Enugu State and Chief Chijioke Edeoga, Governorship Candidate of the Labour Party in 2023 Governorship Election in the state.

Other signatories included: Chief Steve Orurua, Deputy State Chairman of PDP; Chief Sydney Edeh, Chairman, Association of Local Government Chairman of Nigeria (ALGON), Enugu State and Chairman of Nkanu East LGA; and Chief Augustine Nnamani, former Chairman of PDP Enugu.

Gov. Peter Mbah of Enugu State says the state is open for collaboration and support in healthcare to complement the government’s efforts to revamp all levels of healthcare.

Mbah made the appeal on Saturday during the Officially Launching of Free Hospital Equipment and Medical Supplies to Enugu State Teaching Hospital by Shola Agboola Goodwill Ambassador (SAGA) Foundation.

The medical equipment and supplies included: medical beds, consumables, theatre tables, mattresses, all sorts of medical items used in hospitals, machines, tools, equipment, scanners and ultra-sound machines among others.

Represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Chidiebere Onyia, the governor said that his administration had invested hugely in rebuilding, revamping and total overhaul of the state’s healthcare system.

According to him, the state government is constructing 260 Type-2 Primary Healthcare Centres across the 260 political wards and some of them are completed; while secondary healthcare (General and Cottage Hospitals) are given a facelift.

“The state’s two teaching hospitals’ facilities have been upgraded and expanded; while our 300-bedded Quaternary International Hospital, meant to attract international medical tourism, is near completion.

“The government has set out plans to bring in state-of-the-art facilities and equipment for the game-changing first-grade healthcare facilities; however, there is room for collaboration and more support to the facilities,” he said.

Mbah urged foundations, corporate organisations and philanthropists to collaborate with the state government to ensure that the residents, indeed Nigerians, could seek qualitative and satisfactory healthcare in the state at any level of healthcare.

“The people and government of Enugu State are appreciative of SAGA Foundation for the medical equipment donated to the state worth over N430 million. We call for more, seeing the vesting number of our facilities,” he said.

The Founder of SAGA Foundation, Dr Shola Agboola, said that he started the foundation to uplift health in Nigeria and Africa after losing his father to tetanus in an ill-equipped health facility at the age of 13.

Agboola said that the Foundation had donated health equipment to over 10 states in Nigeria as well as three other countries in Africa within its10-year existence.

“I must commend the state government for a well-planned and well-invested healthcare system, which is a testament of the premium and quality of healthcare the government envisioned for her people,” he said.

Earlier, the state Commissioner for Health, Prof. George Ugwu, appreciated Gov. Mbah for using his international connections and extraordinary capacity to attract medical equipment and supplies from SAGA Foundation, Canada.

Ugwu said that the medical equipment and supplies were coming at a critical time as the government had already embarked on retooling and revamping all levels of healthcare to make the state a healthcare destination.

He said, “we are going to deploy these medical equipment and supplies to areas of greatest needs in general and teaching hospitals and we are assuring everyone to put them to judicious and protective use.

“The current retooling and revamping of all levels of healthcare facilities have opened up space and we call for more collaboration and support in medical equipment and supplies to filling them up.”

The Enugu State Government has begun the payment of insurance premium for farmers in the state to cushion the effects of pest, crop diseases and climate change on farmlands.

The state’s Commissioner for Agriculture and Agro-Industralisation, Mr Patrick Ubru, disclosed this on Friday in Enugu.

Ubru said this at the sidelines of the one-day South East Zonal Consultative Forum for the Review of National Gender Policy in Agriculture for Nigeria and it’s Strategic Plan of Action (2025 – 2030).

The commissioner, who did not disclose the amount involved and number of benefiting farmers, said that “with the unpredictability of nature and climatic condition, insurance is very important.”

“The vulnerability of the climate has affected agriculture a lot. The payment of insurance premium is to use it to protect the farmers,” he said.

Ubru also said that state government had set up seed laboratory in the Ministry of Agriculture for better yield and bumper agricultural production.

According to him, a seed gallery has been set up in the ministry for easy access to quality and affordable seeds and seedlings suitable for the state soil types.

“The seed laboratory is meant to test the seeds and their fertility in the soil as well as determine their condition before planting,” he said.

Ubru said that all forms of crops are grown in Enugu State today, adding “that there is ongoing Gov. Peter Mbah’s Cocoa Initiative, with 30,000 seedlings of cocoa available in the state.”

The Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security says inclusivity of gender, youths and People with Disabilities (PWDs) will be the backbone of the ministry’ entire processes and value-chain of agriculture.

The Director of Special Duties in the Ministry, Mrs Kachallah Damaturu, said this on Friday in Enugu.

Damaturu said this during a one-day South-East Zonal Consultative Forum for the Review of National Gender Policy in Agriculture for Nigeria and Its Strategic plan of Action (2025 – 2030).

She said that the forum was held in South-East  in order to give voices to women, youths and PWDs  as well as factor their special needs and their buy-in into the national plan of action for agriculture.

According to her, the ministry will not leave any segment of the society behind as agriculture work well when there is a robust inclusion of all.

She said, “I want to acknowledge President Ahmed Tinubu, who has shown vital interest in the agriculture sector, especially in the areas affecting women.

“The President, during the Women Affair’s Ministry programme on Oct. 15, 2024, reiterated that women empowerment in agriculture should be given priority especially in agricultural training, access to land and financial services.”

The director said that the ministry expanded the participants beyond the women, youths and PWDs as well as involved commissioners, permanent secretaries and directors at the states in the South-East to ensure that everybody gets involved and in-puts collated.

Speaking, the Food and Agriculture Advisor of Actionaid, Blessing Akhile, said that the forum was meant to promote equity and productivity, adding that it would help to shape the resilience of the total agricultural system.

Akhile, whose Actionaid Chairs the steering Committee on the Review of the National Gender Policy, said that when everybody become on board, it would lead to poverty reduction, food security and resilience food system.

“Actionaid appreciates the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, Alliance for Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA), the German International Support (GIZ) and others for their support and contribution to ensure the consultation will be successful.

“The forum today will ensure that all requirements of various segments of the society is catered for and to ensure a robust inclusivity,” he said.

Collaborating, the Programme Officer of AGRA in Nigeria, Dr Esther Ibrahim, said that agriculture remained the backbone of African’s economy and it employs millions of people in the continent.

Ibrahim said that the vast population of Africa farmers are women and youths, adding that AGRA’s policy and action plan had continued to provide systematic support to women and youth farmers.

According to her, AGRA through its strategic system has continued to remove barriers militating against women and youths in agriculture and we are here to support the move of the ministry and her partners.

In an address, the Commissioner for Agriculture and Agro-Industrialisation in Enugu State, Mr Patrick Ubru, said that Enugu State had made it mandatory to have 70 per cent of women and youths in all its agricultural progammes.

Ubru also said that women and youths had been represented robustly in all agricultural programmes and value-change in the state.

He commended Gov. Peter Mbah, the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security and her partners for their continuous support to agriculture, creating jobs and food production as well as inclusivity of all.

Reasonable Wage: APC Chieftain, Ngwu urges South-East governors to emulate APC governors in zone

A Foundation member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Chief Hycienth Ngwu, has urged governors particularly those from South-East to emulate APC governors in the zone by paying a reasonable minimum wage.

Ngwu, who is the former South-East Publicity Secretary of the APC, made the appeal on Friday in Enugu.

It would be recalled that on Tuesday, Imo State Government approved N104,000 and Ebonyi State Government, on Wednesday, approved N90,000 as basic salaries to their civil servants respectively.

Ngwu said that these actions of the governors are humane and commendable.

“I commend the directives of the Governors of Imo and Ebonyi States to raise the salaries of their civil servants to a meaningful level,” he said.

According to him, these actions are testament that APC Governments both at the national and sub-nationals are highly poised to cushion the temporary hardship being felt by citizens.

The APC chieftain noted that the temporary hardship was as a result of the implementation of the well-meaning economic policies geared towards repositioning the Nigerian economy for sustainable and resilient growth.

“I encourage the governors of Abia, Anambra and Enugu States to emulate the two governors in the APC platform and increase the basic salaries of their civil servants to cushion the present economic transition challenges.

“In fact, the Imo State template should be copied and overtaken by the other states.

“Civil servants spending impacts positively on local economies in diverse ways.

“And when the salaries go up, the spending goes up and families and petty business owners are happier and well-off,” he said.

Ngwu said that these laudable moves by both governors impact positively on individuals, families and collective productivity of the people.

“There is no gain-saying the fact that both the monthly Federal allocation to states and their internally generated revenues have increased tremendously to match the increase in salaries and other infrastructure developments,” he added.

He said that the various session equipped participants (the children) with a deeper understanding of their personal emotional landscape, the tools to cultivate empathy, and the ability to express emotions appropriately in various contexts.

The executive director appreciated Coli Mental Health Academy for coordinating the training; while lauding the foundation partners – The Andover Hotel, Rangers International Football Club Foundation, Qaps, and Carmelite Prisoners interest Organisation (CAPIO) – for their support.

“I must commend CALMHAF Foundation for bringing this vital and impactful bootcamp (training), which is only done in advance countries, to our children in Enugu and for them to gain from it,” he said.

Corroborating, the Enugu State Commissioner for Agriculture and Agro-Industrialisation, Mr Patrick Ubru, lauded CALMHAF Foundation and parents that ensured that their children gained from the vital emotional intelligence bootcamp.

Ubru said, “I consider you children privileged and favoured, and there are many children out there, who are not privileged to acquire such rare knowledge, which will never be taught in your normal schools.

“If we adult have such opportunity to gain the knowledge of emotional intelligence as you; our lives will be better and we might have made tremendous progress in life and the world becomes a peaceful and better place.”

CALMHAF, the organiser of the bootcamp, said that the training would be undertaken annually during long school vacations.

CVR takes off smoothly in Enugu as INEC blocks double registration

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has kicked off its Continuous Voters Registration (CVR) without hitch in Enugu even as the commission put in water-tight measures to check double registration.

It would be recalled that INEC started its online CVR pre-registration on Aug. 18, 2025 and started its in-person full CVR registration on Aug. 25, 2025 nationwide.

Chief Rex Achumie, Head of Department (HOD), Voter Education and Publicity, INEC, told newsmen on Tuesday in Enugu that the in-person CVR had taken off smoothly without any “start-up challenge” experienced.

Achumie said that INEC had commenced full in-person registration at its state headquarters in Enugu and its council offices in the 17 Local Government Area secretariats within the state.

According to him, the ongoing exercise, which I know you witnessed at the hall, runs from Monday to Friday and between 9a.m. to 4p.m.

He noted that the unique thing about the ongoing exercise  “is that there is no room for double registration as the commission has blocked all such avenue”.

He said, “In the course of INEC publicity for the CVR, we told the public that it is only people that attained 18 years after our last general election.

“Or people who are already 18 years then but due to unfortunate circumstances they were unable to do their registration that should come forward.

“Another category of people, we are attending to are those that lost their voter cards, those with defaced voter cards, those with mistakes in their names, those seeking for relocation and change of unit.

“However, those seeking for other service rather than fresh CVR; they must provide existing cards, or swear an affidavit for a lost card and we will check their finger and facial bio-metrics in our system as well.”

The HOD called on the residents to embrace the CVR on time, adding that residents should form the habit of attending to “important national issues such as have valid and ready voter’s cards on time.”

“You should not wait for the rush time or few days to the end of the exercise to attend to your registration or voting card issues,” he said.

It takes an average of five minutes to complete a fresh CVR registration.
