DisCo explains loss of power supply in parts of Enugu

The MainPower Electricity Distribution Limited (MEDL) says current loss of power in parts of Enugu metropolis  is due to heavy rainfall and strong winds experienced recently.

The Head, Communications of MEDL, Mr Emeka Ezeh, disclosed on Monday in Enugu that the power outage happened on Sunday afternoon.

According to him, the incident resulted in a wire cut on Emene Industrial Lines one and two.

“This impacted a distribution tower and disrupted supply to several 33kV feeders within Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) Switch Yard at the New Haven Station.

“The affected feeders include Trans Ekulu, Thinkers Corner, Ituku Ozalla, and Ugwogo 33kV lines.

“Consequently, all electricity customers residing at Trans-Ekulu, Emene, Thinkers Corner, Emenite, Airport, Alo-Alminium, Akpuoga, Nkwubor, Ugwuomu, Abakpa-Nike, Nike Lake, and Ugwogo and environs, served by the affected 33kv lines are currently without power supply.

“Our technical team is working diligently to rectify the fault and restore electricity supply to the affected areas as quickly as possible,” he said.

The spokesman said that MEDL regretted the inconvenience the unforeseen development had caused residents and customers.

Children Asthmatic Attacks: Foundation urges checkmate of environmental pollution

The Amaka Chiwuike-Uba Foundation (ACUF), an NGO, has urged Nigerians, especially government at all levels, to checkmate factors promoting environmental pollution leading to children asthmatic attacks.

The Chairman, Board of Trustees of the Foundation, Prof. Chiwuike Uba, made the call on Monday in Enugu while speaking to newsmen on Asthma and Children suffering the disease.

Uba spoke ahead of the World Asthma Day held annually, every first Tuesday within the month of May, with the  theme “Access to Anti-inflammatory Inhalers for Everyone With Asthma, Still An Urgent Need.”

He noted that the asthma burden in the country had been compounded for children suffering the diseases, whose immune are weak and with fragile respiratory system, due to environmental pollution.

According to him, across many Nigerian cities, air quality is deteriorating due to vehicle emissions, generator fumes, industrial pollutants, open waste burning, and dust.

The chairman said that indoor air pollution from generators and kerosene use further worsens exposure for asthma patients especially infants and children, especially in densely populated settlements.

Uba noted that for people living with asthma, polluted air is not just an inconvenience, “it is a trigger”.

He said, “It increases the frequency and severity of asthma attacks, undermines treatment effectiveness, and places an additional burden on already vulnerable patients.

“Children are particularly at risk. Exposure to polluted air in homes, schools, and communities worsens respiratory health, increases school absenteeism, and heightens the likelihood of severe asthma episodes.

“Managing asthma effectively in such an environment becomes significantly more difficult, especially when preventive medications are already out of reach for many families.

“Nowhere is this more tragic than among children, who bear a disproportionate burden of asthma in Nigeria.”

Uba said that frequent asthma attacks on children disrupt schooling, limit physical activity, and in severe cases, cut lives short.

“A child who cannot breathe cannot learn. A child who is constantly ill cannot thrive. And a generation that cannot thrive cannot build a prosperous nation,” he said.

The chairman said that there was a direct link between the health of children and the prosperity of any nation.

He said that healthy children attend school consistently, learn effectively, and develop the capacity to contribute meaningfully to society as well as grow into a productive workforce that drives economic growth.

  • Ibadan indigenes warn politicians against disrespecting Olubadan

Ibadan indigenes warn politicians against disrespecting Olubadan

The Central Council of Ibadan Indigenes, on Monday, read a riot act to the politicians in Oyo State, especially in the ancient city, over disrespecting the sacred stool of Olubadan of Ibadanland, warning that any attempt to denigrate the revered stool will be met with severe consequences.

CCII President-General, Ajeniyi Ajewole, gave this warning in a statement released by the council’s Publicity Secretary, Kola Olomide, in Ibadan, the state capital, amid growing concerns over rising reckless utterances and conducts in the state by some power-seeking politicians

He said recent actions by some political actors had crossed acceptable boundaries and posed a risk to the dignity of traditional institutions in Ibadanland.

Ajewole stressed that the council would not tolerate any form of disrespect directed at the Olubadan stool, warning further that the CCII would not sit idly by and watch the Olubadan throne desecrated for political gain.

CCII said, “The stool is sacred to the people of Ibadanland and must be treated with the highest respect at all times. Any attempt to denigrate the revered stool will be met with severe consequences.”

The PG added that the Olubadan remains a unifying father figure to all indigenes and residents of Ibadan, regardless of political affiliation.

He said, “All politicians in Oyo are sons and daughters of the Olubadan. They must conduct themselves with decorum, restraint, and absolute respect for the institution.

Any attempt at casting aspersions on the person of Olubadan and the stool and turning around to tender any apology would not be tolerated any longer. You mess up with that stool, you must be ready to face the consequence(s).

“The palace can never become any politician’s pawn; it is our symbol of strength and unity. This is the last time such nonsense will be condoned. Let politicians be warned, to be forewarned is to be forearmed. We will defend our tradition, our heritage, and our dignity,” the council warned.

It also reiterated that the institution is strictly non-partisan and has continued to maintain neutrality and respect for all political actors in the state.

The council expressed strong displeasure over incidents where politicians were seen raining curses on their opponents, describing such conduct as irresponsible and unacceptable

Ajewole, therefore, urged political actors to exercise restraint, warning that political differences must never be allowed to escalate into attacks on cultural and traditional institutions.

He called for maturity in political engagement, saying, “Politics should never be reduced to insults, curses, or hostility. We urge all political actors to rise above bitterness and act in the interest of peace and unity.”

The CCII reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the sanctity of the Olubadan stool and called on all stakeholders to ensure that respect, peace, and decorum remain central to political activities in the state.

  • Gov Adeleke Faults Ambo-Adereti Agenda Sector by Sector

Gov Adeleke Faults Ambo-Adereti Agenda Sector by Sector

    –  Says Opposition Bereft of Governance Ideas

    By Iyiola Olalere

Oshogbo:  Osun state governor, Senator Ademola Adeleke has faulted the manifesto of the opposition, calling it “a warped plan incompatible with the needs and aspirations of Osun people”.

Speaking shortly after attending the 2026 May Day rally at Osogbo, the governor cited each of the items on the APC manifesto as ill thought-out concoction hurriedly packaged together to deceive the people and mask the confusion within the camp of Bola Oyebamiji over governance agenda.

Under economic revival, the Osun APC mentioned agro-processing zones in each senatorial district. But the Oyetola/Ambo government in their days gave less than 100m Naira per year to agriculture (Cash crops and Food Crops) between 2017 and 2022.

Governor Adeleke has however invested heavily in cash crop expansion with tractorisation and seedling initiatives. Oyebamiji’s fundamental thought is warped because you can not have processing value when you don’t have agricultural production.

Oyebamiji mentioned Internally Generated Revenue without pain but as the Finance Commissioner, he taxed the artisans, traders, and Okada riders, till his last days in office without empowering them or supporting their welfare.

He should tell us how much Oyetola/Ambo gave out to cooperatives during their hardship tenure. Governor Adeleke on the other hand has disbursed huge funds to cooperative movements across the state.

The opposition made deceitful claims of workers and pensioners first with arrears to be cleared through structured financing. This is a lie. Ambo and his team are labour’s poison.

Why didn’t he use structured finance to pay the 30-month half salary arrears, when he was a commissioner of finance especially as state debt increased between 2017 and 2022?

Ambo’s boss, Gboyega Oyetola then said, debt funds are meant for projects, projects that are overloaded or over-priced. Was Ambo not the Finance Commissioner then?

The APC agenda promises Youth and Tech empowerment through Osun Tech City to create employment. Throughout their tenure, Osun had no state ICT policy. The Digital Economy was foreign to them.

Governor Adeleke has however established Osun ICT policy and legal framework which are being implemented with specific projects being scaled up for the benefits of residents. ICT initiatives to power government and render services to the people are being rolled out on regular basis.

For Oyebamiji who superintended over Osun state’s investments for close to seven years, How many jobs did he create and what happened to Osun state’s investment in Omoluabi Garment Factory, Shopping Mall, Lagos properties? Were they appropriated by his boss? He should answer these questions.

The opposition agenda also listed infrastructure that works. Osun people can compare the APC’s years of locusts and the three years of Governor Adeleke’s statewide delivery in the infrastructure sector. The Oyetola/Ambo period left many abandoned projects, many of which Governor Adeleke had almost completed. Osun has moved past the years of unimaginative and unambitious handling of the infra sector.

On Education and Health, Mr Oyebamiji promises functional PHCs in all 332 wards. Till date, both Oyebamiji and Mr Oyetola have failed to explain how they used the $20 million health fund meant for PHC. One of their aides just admitted on radio that part of the fund was diverted for Covid19 intervention in fragrant violation of the law. Governor Adeleke has rehabilitated over 200 health centres across the state.

The governor who said the APC manifesto was packaged to deceive, distract and hoodwink the populace urged Osun voters to ignore the scheming of the opposition.

He highlighted his updated five point agenda to include (1) Integrated Youth, Women and Workers’ Welfare and Empowerment; (2) Infrastructure Consolidation for Citizens’ Social and Economic Wellbeing; (3) Agro-Industrial Expansion for Human Development and Collective Prosperity.

Lagos, April 30, 2026  Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Tin Can Island Port Command, has intercepted illicit drugs valued at N18.9 billion in a joint operation with the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).
The seizure was announced on Thursday in Lagos by the Customs Area Controller, Comptroller Frank Onyeka, during a news conference.
Onyeka said the operation reflected sustained inter-agency collaboration aimed at curbing the inflow of contraband through Nigeria’s seaports.
He confirmed that the intercepted consignment had been handed over to the NDLEA for further investigation and possible prosecution.
According to him, the operation followed intelligence-led tracking and a 100 per cent physical examination of a container marked HAMU429966/1, earlier flagged for inspection.
He said the container, which originated from Canada, was falsely declared as used vehicles to evade detection.
“Upon thorough inspection, operatives uncovered a large quantity of cannabis indica concealed within the shipment,” he said.
Onyeka disclosed that the container contained 185 jumbo bags of cannabis, hidden alongside a used 2010 Toyota Camry and a 2023 Chevrolet Colorado.
He said the total seizure comprised 9,458 packages weighing 4,729 kilogrammes, with an estimated street value of N18.916 billion.
He described the interception as a major disruption of drug trafficking networks and a warning to illicit traders exploiting port channels.
The Customs Area Controller, Comptroller Frank Onyeka, showcasing the intercepted cannabis to he Commander of Narcotics, Tin-Can Island Port Command, Solomon Omotosho, worth the N8.9 billion held in Lagos on Thursday
The controller noted that the operation followed a recent cooperation agreement between the NCS and NDLEA, aimed at strengthening joint enforcement against drug-related crimes.
He said the agreement provides for intelligence sharing, coordinated operations and periodic reviews to enhance effectiveness.
Onyeka added that a standing inter-agency committee has been established in Abuja to oversee implementation of the framework.
He commended the leadership of the Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir Adeniyi, as well as port stakeholders and the media for their support.
Receiving the seized items, the Commander of Narcotics, Tin Can Island Port Command, Solomon Omotosho, praised the Customs Service for its vigilance.
Omotosho urged importers and shippers to embrace lawful trade practices and support government efforts to combat drug trafficking.
He assured that investigations would continue to ensure all those involved are brought to justice.
