New York:  UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has condemned deadly attack on a mosque in San Diego, in California, in which three people were killed.

Police said two teenage gunmen opened fire at the Islamic Center of San Diego on Monday and killed three men before killing themselves a few blocks away.

The attack at the Islamic Center of San Diego is being investigated as a hate crime, San Diego Police Chief Scott Wahl said at a news conference at a neighborhood park across from the mosque.

The mosque is just east of Mission Bay, which is about 20 minutes north of downtown San Diego.

Guterres, in a statement by his spokesperson Stephane Dujarric, on Tuesday, reaffirmed that attacks on places of worship were particularly heinous.

He stressed the urgent need to confront hatred and intolerance in all their forms.
The Secretary-General extends his heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims.

He stands in solidarity with the Muslim community and calls for a full investigation into the attack. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

Protest Erupts in Oyo APC Over Alleged Candidate Substitution.

    ‎By Adewale Owoade.

‎Some members of the Oyo State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ward 12, Ibadan South West Local Government Area, staged a protest over the alleged substitution of the name of Hon. Rotimi Ajanaku.

‎Ajanaku contested in the APC primary election for the Ibadan South West/North West Federal Constituency held on Saturday, May 16.

‎The protesters, who gathered in large numbers, claimed that Ajanaku emerged winner of the primary election but that another name later surfaced as the party’s candidate.

‎They called on the national and state leadership of the APC to immediately recognise and officially announce Ajanaku as the party’s candidate for the constituency ahead of the forthcoming general election.

‎Addressing journalists during the protest, a House of Assembly aspirant, Hon. Adepoju Popoola, appealed to APC leaders in Abuja and Oyo State to urgently intervene in the matter to prevent further discontent among party members.

‎According to him, Ajanaku enjoys widespread acceptance among party members and residents of the constituency because of his consistency, accessibility, and contributions to the area.

‎“Hon. Rotimi Ajanaku was declared winner after the primary election, only for another name to emerge afterward. That is why we are calling on the party leadership to correct the situation,” he said.

‎Popoola added that the protesters were agitating to protect the party’s chances in the general election.

‎“We do not want APC to lose the election. This is an opportunity for the party to reclaim the constituency, and the wishes of party members must be respected,” he added.

‎Also speaking, Engr. Balogun Moyosoreoluwa urged the party leadership to carefully examine the complaints raised by members in Ward 12.

‎He noted that the ward had historically played a major role in determining electoral outcomes in both state and federal elections, including governorship contests, and should not be ignored in critical party decisions.

‎The protesters further urged the APC leadership to uphold fairness, transparency, and internal democracy by recognising Ajanaku as the duly elected candidate, warning that failure to address the issue could affect party unity and mobilisation efforts ahead of the general election.

‎Reacting to the protest, the APC Public Secretary in Oyo State, Olawale Sadare, said the party was not aware of any substitution.

‎He, however, advised aggrieved members to channel their complaints to the party’s appeal committee, which was established to receive grievances and make appropriate recommendations to the national leadership.

Child Mortality: Sokoto Govt, Sightsavers target 1.7m children for azithromycin administration

The Sokoto State Government and the NGO Sightsavers plan to administer azithromycin to 1.7 million children as part of efforts to improve healthcare and reduce child mortality.

The Commissioner for Health, Alhaji Faruku Abubakar-Wurno, reiterated government commitment on Tuesday at the launching of the fifth round administration of antibiotics drug ‘Azithromycin” to children in the local government areas.

Abubakar-Wurno said in the last round four exercise, the state had recorded more than 85 per cent coverage, raising hopes for sustaining the progress.

The programme operates under the Safety and Antimicrobial Resistance of Mass Administration of Azithromycin on Children in Nigeria (SARMAAN) designed to improve child survival outcomes through preventive treatment.

Azithromycin is a broad-spectrum macrolide antibiotic that inhibits bacterial protein synthesis, thereby stopping bacterial growth, making it effective for tackling infections contributing to high childhood morbidity and mortality in vulnerable communities.

The antibiotic is commonly used to treat respiratory infections, diarrhoea, and various childhood illnesses. Its administration aligns with the World Health Organisation’s 2022 guidelines for targeted preventive treatment among at-risk populations.

The commissioner said the project had successfully treated children with azithromycin, a milestone aimed at improving life expectancy.

Dr Salman Tijjani, the SARMAN Programme Officer in Sokoto State, said the present round fifth exercise targeted 1.7m children.

He said it would be conducted between May 19 to 23 this year and solicited to more stakeholders commitment to ensuring more success.

Tijjani stated that azithromycin was a vital antibiotic used to treat various childhood ailments and played a key role in reducing infant and child deaths.

He emphasised that the SARMAAN Project aligned with global efforts to improve child survival in low- and middle-income countries, demonstrating the potential of bi-annual azithromycin administration in lowering early childhood mortality.

He added that stakeholders have monitored azithromycin’s safety and effectiveness in reducing antimicrobial resistance among treated children.

The Sightsavers Country Director, Joy Shu’aibu, explained that the programme targeted children aged zero to 59 months using azithromycin, particularly in communities battling Neglected Tropical Diseases like onchocerciasis and schistosomiasis causing significant mortality.

Shu’aubu highlighted Sightsavers’ presence in Sokoto since 1996, beginning with eye-care services that eventually led to establishing and equipping 19 healthcare centres providing consistent, community-based eye-care support.

She said through the interventions, more doctors, nurses, community health workers and auxiliary staff received specialised eye-care training, significantly strengthening the state’s capacity to deliver essential services to underserved populations.

Sultan of Sokoto, represented by Wurno District Head, Alhaji Kabiru Cigari, assured continued support for programme implementation and immunisation coverage, reaffirming traditional institutions’ commitment to improving citizens’ health.

It was reported that Sightsavers in collaboration with the Sokoto State Primary Health Care Development Agency, have mobilised 87 District Heads, 23 local government areas chairmen to support administering azithromycin to children and strengthening community participation in statewide child-health intervention efforts.

ANA Drama Prize Winner, Ebhohon, Honours Mentor Prof. Omoyibo as ‘The Great Delusion’ Gains Global Momentum

    By Danladi Ahmed

Benin-City  (FLOWERBUDNEWS:)   Award-winning Nigerian playwright Majekodunmi Oseriemen Ebhohon has presented an honourary copy of his celebrated play, The Great Delusion, alongside his award plaque, to renowned sociologist Professor K. U. Omoyibo at the University of Benin.

The presentation, which took place in Benin City on May 18, 2026, marks a full-circle moment for the masterpiece, which won the prestigious 2025 Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA) Prize for Drama.

Prof. K.U. Omoyibo, a Professor of Sociology, has been a foundational pillar for the project since its early manuscript stages, providing critical intellectual guidance that helped shape the final book.

Beyond a celebration of the literary prize, the meeting sparked a profound dialogue on the decolonization of African minds, epistemologies, and institutional structures inherited from colonial frameworks.

Prof. Omoyibo lauded the play, noting that its core thematic structures are both timely and historically necessary conversations for students, young Africans, the African diaspora, and continental societies at large. He further pledged his renewed commitment to expanding the book’s reach across global cultural and academic spaces.

“Moments such as these emphasize that no meaningful intellectual labour is built in isolation,” Ebhohon stated following the visit. “As young writers, we stand firmly on the shoulders of mentors, scholars, and those rare individuals who believe in disruptive ideas long before the world recognizes their significance.”

The playwright also extended special appreciation to his lifelong collaborators, A. S. Afereno and Miracle Boniface (popularly known as DVoice), for their active role and sacrifices towards solidifying the theories of Episteresurrecism, Afrocession, and Inversionism, which form the intellectual bedrock of The Great Delusion.

The Great Delusion has rapidly emerged as an iconic work in contemporary African literature. Following its selection and official feature at the Lagos Book and Arts Festival (LABAF), the play has been hosted at the Institute of African Studies, University of Ibadan, and was recently adopted for study at the Department of English and Literature at the University of Benin.

The play dramatizes what happens to a white supremacist world when Black inventors, builders, and thinkers collectively withdraw their labour. The resulting “Afrocession” causes hospitals, infrastructure, and empires to instantaneously collapse.

Eminent scholar of Folklore, Professor G.G. Darah, described the play as “a major contribution to the literature of diaspora civilization” and a triumph of epic theatre.

Similarly, writing the book’s foreword, Dr. Vibert Issa White, a Professor of History at the University of Central Florida, hailed The Great Delusion as an “intellectual resurrection”. White noted that the work “drags into the light the unsung Black inventors whose genius shaped the ancient and modern worlds, forcing the audience to confront why their names were ever forgotten.”

With strong backing from academic giants and a dedicated team, Ebhohon is eager for the future. Reflecting on Prof. Omoyibo’s parting words, the playwright noted, “There is still more work to be done. The rest of the team and I are ready.”
