  • NFVCB wins WHO Director‑General’s Special Award for tobacco‑control in entertainment media

NFVCB wins WHO Director‑General’s Special Award for tobacco‑control in entertainment media

Abuja — The National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB) has received the World Health Organization (WHO) Director‑General’s Special Award for the African Region in recognition of its leadership in tobacco control within entertainment media.
The Board was presented with a Certificate of Appreciation by WHO Director‑General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus as part of activities marking World No Tobacco Day. NFVCB was the only institution among five winners in the African Region to be honoured.
The award recognises the NFVCB’s 2024 regulations that bar promotion and glamorisation of tobacco and nicotine products in films, music videos, skits and other audiovisual works—especially those likely to reach young audiences. Under the rules, any necessary depiction of tobacco use must carry health warnings, receive the highest classification rating and be restricted to viewers aged 18 and above. Producers are also required to disclose any ties to the tobacco industry, place disclaimers where applicable, and refrain from displaying tobacco brands or using product placement.
Those measures align with Article 13 implementation guidance of the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (WHO FCTC) and make Nigeria the first country in Africa — and only the second worldwide — to adopt such comprehensive safeguards against on‑screen glamorisation of tobacco use.
WHO and research evidence note that portrayal of smoking in entertainment normalises the habit and raises the risk of tobacco uptake among young people. The NFVCB said its regulations are intended to curb such exposure while promoting responsible storytelling across Nigeria’s creative sector.
The recognition also supports the eight‑point agenda of the Honourable Minister of Art, Culture, Tourism and the Creative Economy, Barrister Hannatu Musa Musawa, which seeks to strengthen policy frameworks, promote responsible creative content and position Nigeria as Africa’s creative capital by 2030.
Reacting to the award, NFVCB Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer Dr. Shaibu Husseini described the honour as validation of the Board’s efforts to safeguard public health without stifling artistic expression. “This award is a validation of the work we have done with the Nigerian creative industry to promote responsible storytelling. The goal has never been to censor art, but to ensure that our films do not inadvertently market products that are harmful to public health,” he said.
Dr. Husseini pledged continued enforcement of the regulations, expanded public education and deeper collaboration with WHO, the WHO FCTC Secretariat and civil society partners. He also thanked the Federal Ministry of Art, Culture, Tourism and the Creative Economy, filmmakers, producers and advocacy groups including Corporate Accountability and Public Participation Africa (CAPPA), the National Tobacco Control Alliance (NTCA) and Campaign for Tobacco‑Free Kids (CTFK) for their support.
The NFVCB said it will maintain efforts to protect children and vulnerable audiences while promoting socially responsible content in Nigeria’s booming entertainment industry.

MainPower DisCo Warns Residents Against Encroachment on Power Line Infrastructure

MainPower Electricity Distribution Limited (MEDL) has cautioned residents of Enugu State to stay away from high-tension towers, poles, and power lines, emphasizing that electricity is extremely dangerous and must be handled with utmost caution.

The company urged members of the public to observe the approved Right-of-Way for electricity infrastructure and desist from activities capable of endangering lives, property, and the integrity of the electricity network.

Speaking in Enugu, the Head of Health, Safety and Environment, Dr. Francis Iwu, told newsmen on Wednesday that the warning became necessary following the increasing rate of residential and commercial encroachment around critical electricity installations across the state.

According to him, the development poses significant safety risks to residents and threatens the reliability and stability of electricity supply within the franchise area.

Iwu referenced the windstorm and heavy rainfall recorded on May 3, 2026, which resulted in a snapped conductor on the Emene Industrial Lines around the Naira Triangle axis in Emene. Although no casualty was recorded, the incident caused severe damage to the transmission tower supporting the line.

He explained that the approved safety clearance for power lines remains 25 metres on both sides for 330kV transmission lines, 15 metres on both sides for 132kV lines, and 5.5 metres on both sides for 33kV and 11kV distribution lines.

He expressed concern over the increasing number of buildings, markets, and other commercial activities being carried out dangerously close to electricity installations, especially in parts of Thinkers Corner, Emene, Abakpa, New Haven, Amechi, Agbani and Ugwuaji.

He noted that such practices violate established safety standards and expose the public to avoidable electrical hazards.

Iwu further advised residents to refrain from erecting structures, trading, parking heavy-duty equipment, or carrying out any activity beneath or near high-tension lines, warning that accidents involving electricity are often fatal and unforgiving.

He called on community leaders, developers, landlords, traders, and relevant government agencies to collaborate with the company in safeguarding electricity infrastructure and ensuring strict compliance with safety regulations in the interest of public safety and sustainable power supply.

NAFDAC Urges Stakeholders To Lead Vigilance On Antimicrobial Resistance, Adverse Drug Reactions

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has called on stakeholders and Nigerians to lead vigilance against Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) to medicines/drugs and Adverse Drug Reactions (ADR).

The Director-General of NAFDAC, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, made the call on during a one-day Pharmacovigilance Workshop and Stakeholders Town Hall Meeting in Enugu.

Represented by NAFDAC’s Director, South-East Zone, Dr Festus Ukadike, the director-general noted that the gravest consequences of irrational medicine use today is AMR.

She explained that the misuse and overuse of antibiotics had accelerated the emergence of resistant microorganisms that no longer respond to conventional treatment.

“This means that infections previously treatable with common antibiotics are becoming increasingly difficult and expensive to manage.

“If urgent action is not taken, antimicrobial resistance may reverse decades of medical progress and place humanity at serious risk.

“This is why Pharmacovigilance is extremely important. Pharmacovigilance refers to the science and activities relating to the detection, assessment, understanding, and prevention of adverse effects or any other medicine-related problems.

“In simple terms, Pharmacovigilance helps us ensure that medicines remain safe and effective even after they have been approved and released into the market,” she said.

Adeyeye noted that no medicine is completely free from side effects.

“However, through effective Pharmacovigilance systems, healthcare professionals and patients can identify harmful reactions early, report them appropriately, and help regulatory authorities take necessary actions to protect the public,” she said.

She said that Pharmacovigilance remained a core mandate of the agency, adding that stakeholders and general public should play active part in monitoring AMR and ADR to ensure effectiveness of medicine and treatment.

Speaking, the Chairman, Enugu State Traditional Rulers’ Council, Igwe Samuel Asadu, commended NAFDAC for the workshop, while urging the agency to put more efforts in curbing sales of fake medicines in the hinterlands.

Asadu said that Pharmacovigilance was needed more in the hinterlands of the state to stop people paddling fake medicines and “selling outright chalk as medicine in villages in the state”.

He gave the commitment of royal fathers in the state in providing necessary support to NAFDAC to check paddlers of fake medicines, “as we see our people die due to their activities.”

Corroborating, the State Coordinator of World Health Organization (WHO), Dr Adaeze Ugwu, said that the organisation would continue to support NAFDAC in the agency’s resolve to strengthen food and healthcare in the country.

Also, Dr Oliver Ezemba, Chairman, Nigerian Association of Patent and Proprietory Medicine Dealers (NAPPMED), urged everybody to get concerned on the issues of AMR and ADR to guarantee quality medicines for everyone.

Ezemba called on Nigerians to imbibe the habit of reporting any irregularities observed while using a medicine to NAFDAC for proper investigation, which would serve the benefit of many Nigerians using same medicine.

The participants asked questions on AMR and ADR as well as made pledge on reporting any suspectable AMR or ADR case through the NAFDAC’s Med Safety Mobile App using their cellphone or computer set.

In the workshop, a presentation was made on “Need for Effective Pharmacovigilance by All’, delivered by Mr Chidi Uche and Mrs Ogechi Udeh, who are NAFDAC officials.

  • Why Hon. Khalil Mustapha Adegboyega (Repete) Represents the Future We Deserve

Why Hon. Khalil Mustapha Adegboyega (Repete) Represents the Future We Deserve

In the quiet confidence of a true leader, there is no need for loud, empty clamor. Leadership is not defined by the weight of a transient portfolio, but by the weight of one’s character, the depth of their accessibility, and an unflinching commitment to human elevation.

When you look at the contemporary political landscape of Ibadan North and the broader All Progressives Congress (APC), the demand of the moment is crystal clear: we need leaders who are bridges, not walls. We need figures who command respect through empathy, not title. Standing exceptionally at the vanguard of this paradigm shift is Hon. Khalil Mustapha Adegboyega, affectionately and widely known as Repete.

    The Power of Pure Accessibility

True leadership is measured by how easily the ordinary citizen can reach the heart of the leader. Repete has seamlessly redefined the art of political engagement by stripping away the artificial barriers that so often separate the leadership from the grassroots.

    A Gentle Disposition:

He is a man who listens before he speaks, understanding that the grievances of the youth and the wisdom of the elders require an attentive ear, not a dismissed glance.

    An Open Door:

To encounter him is to experience the rare combination of high-level corporate refinement and genuine, unpretentious humility. He remains consistently approachable—a leader who exists entirely for the people.

    The Architect of Youth Liberation

At a time when the youth demographic requires more than just tokenistic inclusion, Hon. Khalil Mustapha Adegboyega stands out as an active liberator. His vision does not merely involve giving youth a seat at the table; it focuses on unlocking their economic, intellectual, and social potential.

”Liberation is not a handout; it is the deliberate creation of pathways for others to thrive.”

Through his consistent mentorship, advocacy, and quiet empowerment initiatives, he has systematically broken the shackles of dependency for countless young minds across Ibadan North, shifting the narrative from vulnerability to self-reliance. He sees the youth not as tools for political convenience, but as the primary stakeholders of our collective tomorrow.

Hon. Khalil Mustapha Adegboyega represents the very best of the APC ideal. He is an institutional asset who embodies party loyalty, possesses a sweeping grassroots appeal, and maintains a clean, sophisticated image that elevates the party’s brand. He bridges the gap between the traditional party stalwarts and the energetic new generation of voters, making him an invaluable anchor for the progressive fold.

    Moving Forward with Kindness

Ultimately, political titles fade, but the legacy of kindness and systemic elevation endures. Repete does not need the validation of an office to do the work of a visionary; his track record as a youth liberator and a compassionate progressive speaks fluently on his behalf.

As Ibadan North and the APC look toward a future of consolidated growth and sustained excellence, embracing the calm, powerful, and transformative essence of Hon. Khalil Mustapha Adegboyega is not just a choice—it is a duty to progress. He remains a shining testament to what happens when competence meets a kind heart.

Association decries unfair treatment of Christian aspirants in Niger Association

Flowerbud News/ The Niger Christian Voice in Politics and Governance (NCVIPG), has decried the unfair treatment meted at Christians aspirants in the ongoing political party primaries across the state.

The Coordinator of the association, Habila Diko, made this known while briefing newsmen at the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) Secretariat on Wednesday in Minna.

“We want to draw the attention of the Niger Governor, Muhammad Bago, and the APC leadership to the unfair treatment meted at Christian aspirants vying for various positions at the ongoing party primaries.

“We have noted with great concern the deliberate and systemic exclusion of Christian aspirants under the guise of consensus and zoning. Thereby leaving Christians with no representation in the state vying for various positions.

“For the records, there are fillers that Christian aspirants vying for the State Assembly are currently being pressurised to withdraw or step down. We strongly condemn this action resulting from zoning or consensus.”

Diko therefore, called on the party leadership to clear its name as it was being peddled that they were the people behind the call for Christian aspirants to step down or be screened out.

This, he claimed they intended to do, by reviewing and correcting the outcome of the primaries where genuine complaints and irregularities had been raised for fairness, equity and justice.

He also used the opportunity to appeal to the governor to reconsider this disturbing development in the interest of equity, peace and balanced political representation.

“This is because systemically, this current act of consensus and zoning has led to the exclusion of Christian aspirants.

“Furthermore, we want to use this medium to call on other political parties in the state not to toll this same line or undermine Christian aspirants vying for positions but ensure fairness and total inclusion.”

The Coordinator also used the opportunity to appreciate the governor for his move to institutionalise zoning by pushing to gazette the zoning system to ensure power rotates among all the twenty five Local Government Areas.

This move according to the governor, was aimed to propose a maximum of eight years for any area that benefited from the arrangement.

The aim was also to prevent the dominance of single areas and ensure fair representation across the state.

In his remarks, the State Publicity Secretary of the APC, Musa Sarkinkaji, stated that the party was a national party and that as such, it doesn’t discriminate against any religion, tribal or geographical affiliation.

He stated further that Politics was not about religion, ethnicity or tribe but simply about number, which is why it’s a game of number.

“So, Niger in the first place, it’s not a Muslim state neither is it a Christian state.

“So, for an individual, a group or an association to claim that the party and its leadership are sidelining them from getting the party’s ticket is not true. They are just fabrications.

“So, as far as we are concerned, we don’t deny anybody from getting what she or he wants in the party. It’s all about the most popular and credible aspirants that we are sure can defeat any opposition.”

He added that in APC there was no need to segregate since the party was not formed based on any personalities or religious inclination that the association claimed.

NIHOUR’s Registration Impasse: FTAN reiterates position, commends members cooperation

… applauds Tourism Minister, PS push for PPP

…says Hospitality Skill Sector not properly reconstituted

The Federation of Tourism Associations of Nigeria (FTAN) has reiterated its position on the National Institute of Hospitality and Tourism (NIHOTOUR) Act 2022.

This is as its distanced itself from the induction ceremony of some people as members and fellows performed last week in Abuja by the management of the National Institute for Hospitality and Tourism (NIHOTOUR).

FTAN while restating its position on the NIHOTOUR Act 2022, pointed out that grey areas outlined by the Federation have not been addressed and cleared by the management of the Institute.

The President of FTAN Dr Aliyu Ajayi Badaki, while clarifying these recent developments, lauded its Member-Associations, other discerning and well-meaning stakeholders across the tourism value chain for standing with the Federation and heeding its calls to abstain from any registration exercise being conducted by NIHOTOUR in whatever disguise.

He also commended the Minister of Arts, Culture, Tourism and Creative Economy, Barrister Hannatu Musa Musawa, and the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Ibrahim Abdulkarim Ozi, for showing understanding over the issues at stake by making several efforts at resolving them and insistence on Private-Public Partnership, as the sound path to achieving tangible results and developments of the sector.

This clarification, according to Badaki, became necessary, following the series of inquiries it has received from members, concerned interest groups and persons within the sector over last week’s induction ceremony by NIHOTOUR, which a section of the Nigerian media and stakeholders believed was based on the purported registration exercise of operators.

Badaki noted; ‘‘for the avoidance of doubt, let is be made known and clear that FTAN was not part of the induction ceremony of operators as members and fellows performed last week in Abuja by NIHOTOUR.

‘‘The position of the Federation on NIHOTOUR Act 2022, is very clear and with no ambiguity whatsoever. The law has appropriated a lot of responsibilities besides the mandatory functions of training and development of manpower for the tourism sector, on NIHOTOUR, thereby infringing on other areas and functions that is not within the purvey of NIHOTOUR as a training institute.

‘‘We have pointed out these greys areas that need to be deliberated on, with acceptable pathway agreed on among the stakeholders, Ministry and NIHOTOUR, including NTDA, before implementation of the Act.’’

He further disclosed that Musawa, based on the submission of FTAN, and the disruptions caused in the industry by the unorthodoxy tactics adopted by NIHOTOUR’s Director General, Dr Abisoye Fagade, on three different occasions directed Fagade, to put on hold the implementation of the Act, until a stakeholder forum is conveyed for the purpose of deliberating on the Act and fashioning out acceptable mode of implementation.

Badaki, however, expressed disappointment over the posturing of the NIHOTOUR DG in trying to circumvent due process and adherence to the Minister’s directive, by resorting to different clandestine means instead; including the purported induction and registration exercise that was conducted last week, to enforce an ACT that go against the development of the industry and its operators.

FTAN further condemned the recent unceremonious reconstitution of the Hospitality Sector Skill Council membership and its Board of Trustees by Fagade, noting that it was not properly constituted, with the right professionals and constituencies represented but rather by friends and cronies of the DG, who will further do his biddings of trying to undermine FTAN, cause disaffections and disruptions within the industry.

Badaki also clarified that FTAN is not a trade union but rather a professional body that represents the interests of professionals and businesses, including investors, across the travel, tourism and hospitality trade, in the country.

He commended the Federation Member-Associations for abstaining from the event, and standing solidly behind the Federation in its quest to ensure that the proper thing is done. He assured them of the commitment of the Executive Council and Board of Trustees, in pursuing through legal and legitimate means, the position of the Federation on the matter.
