APC Chieftain Okechukwu Criticises ADC For Elevating Personal Interest Above National Cohesion

A Foundation member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Mr Osita Okechukwu, has criticised the African Democratic Congress (ADC) for elevating personal interest above national cohesion.

Okechukwu, who is the former Director-General of Voice of Nigeria (VON), disclosed this in a statement he issued on Thursday in Enugu.

He faulted the emergency of Alhaji Atiku Abubakar as ADC presidential flag bearer against the current North and South national rotational zoning.

According to him, the emergence of His Excellency, Atiku Abubakar, as the presidential flag bearer of the ADC has once again raised serious concerns over the unforced error of elevating personal ambition above the zoning convention.

Okechukwu noted that since the advent of the Fourth Republic, zoning rotation at the presidential level had largely guaranteed national cohesion, patriotism, fairness, and a sense of belonging among Nigerians.

“It amounts to political opportunism for the ADC to disregard the zoning principle at a time when virtually all major political parties — APC, PDP, LP, NDC — as well as the majority of Nigerians, subscribe to rotational presidency in the overriding national interest.

“By its action, the ADC has chosen to return Nigeria to the old and divisive North-versus-South political morass.

“This made Rt. Hon. Rotimi Amechi to reject the offer of vice president; and as speculated confirmed ADC as Atiku’s Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV),” he said.

He stressed that Nigeria’s unity remained non-negotiable and that no individual’s political ambition should supersede national cohesion, as nobody can be president in a crisis-ridden country.

Okechukwu noted that with Nigeria entangled in palpable insurgency; it is most patriotic that all northern political gladiators except one are patiently waiting for 2031, the Northern turn under the existing rotational understanding.

He said that he hoped that the ADC leadership would not blame the APC and by extension President Bola Tinubu, when majority of Nigerians vote against their unforced error of breaching the zoning convention.

“This is bearing in mind that their 2023 breach of the same principle significantly contributed to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)’s irretrievable and deep internal divisions till date,” he said.

Okechukwu maintained that history would judge ADC leaders not by the intensity of their rhetoric and rationalisation, but by their non-adherence to zoning.

“The rotational zoning glue has contributed to national unity, institutional stability and democratic consolidation,” he said.

The three-day EU-funded training is being organised by the Office of the Head of Service Enugu State and UNESCO.

Sanga said that he was confident that the training course, with its significant milestone in relation to making ethical and informed decisions on AI, would be enriching.

According to him, the weight of designing and implementing development goals driven by AI and other emerging technologies lies on our shoulders as technocrats, administrators and policy makers.

81 Division champions innovation through research competition among command schools

The 81 Division Nigerian Army has reaffirmed its commitment to nurturing intellectual excellence and innovation among its students with the launch of the 2026 edition of the 81 Division Annual Inter-Command Secondary Schools Research Development and Innovation Competition.

The acting Director of 81 Division Education Services (DDES), Colonel O.A. Olubo, said this while declaring the event open at Command Day Secondary School, T.A. Lagbaja Cantonment, Ikeja, Lagos.

Olubo emphasised that the competition is more than an academic exercise, but a strategic platform designed to cultivate creativity, research, and problem-solving skills among students within the Nigerian Army Command School system.

She noted that the Nigerian Army Education Corps (NAEC) was founded on the principle that military strength is measured not only by firepower but also by intellectual capacity.

Olubo said that NAEC had evolved into a robust hub for research and development, embedding innovation-driven programmes into the Command Schools curriculum.

She acknowledged that every great invention in human history started with a question and the courage to think differently.

According to her, the competition is not only about building prototypes or presenting data; it is about having the courage to ask “why” and “what if.”

The acting DDES encouraged students to embrace curiosity, resilience, and creativity, stressing that failed experiments are vital steps in the innovation process.

She also commended teachers, mentors, and evaluators for their dedication to nurturing young talents and sustaining NAEC’s vision of intellectual empowerment.

The event featured groundbreaking projects and research presentations by students from various Command Secondary Schools under 81 Division.

Beyond showcasing talent, the competition is expected to strengthen academic excellence, critical thinking, and leadership while preparing students to tackle future national development challenges.

By fostering innovation at the grassroots level, the Nigerian Army is positioning its Command Schools as incubators of ideas that could shape technological breakthroughs and strategic solutions for the nation.

  • NYSC corps members must obey social media laws, says D-G

    Social media

    By Justina Auta/Folasade Akpan

Abuja, May 28, 2026 (FBN) The Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brig.-Gen. Olakunle Nafiu, says corps members are not exempt from Nigeria’s cyberbullying and social media laws during their mandatory national service year.

Nafiu said this during an interview programme with the News Agency of Nigeria on Thursday in Abuja, emphasising that corps members remained subject to constitutional provisions and laws regulating online conduct.

According to him, corps members remain citizens of Nigeria and are fully subject to provisions of the Constitution and other extant laws regulating online conduct, cyber activities and public behaviour nationwide.

Nafiu explained that allegations of cyberbullying against corps members would be investigated and handled by relevant law enforcement agencies in accordance with the law, regardless of their status as serving corps members.

He added that the NYSC was not mandated to provide legal representation for corps members involved in criminal or civil matters arising from social media activities and other online engagements.

“The fact that they are corps members does not absolve them from being citizens bound by the laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

“If someone says you cyberbullied him or her, the police will arrest you with your NYSC identity card and you will bear that responsibility.

“I am not funded to provide legal representation for you in court.

“What we do is engage the Legal Aid Council to monitor proceedings,” Nafiu said while explaining the scheme’s responsibilities.

According to him, the Legal Aid Council can provide pro bono legal services for corps members where necessary, particularly in situations requiring legal support during investigations or proceedings before competent courts.

Nafiu said the scheme had intensified sensitisation campaigns to educate corps members on responsible use of social media and digital communication platforms amid growing concerns over cyberbullying and online misconduct.

“The rule of the game has changed. You cannot just go online calling out people because someone can accuse you of cyberbullying,” Nafiu warned corps members.

He, however, noted that the NYSC had adjusted its communication strategies to reflect changing realities among younger Nigerians participating in the national service programme across different states and communities nationwide.

Nafiu said the scheme was not opposed to content creation by corps members but encouraged responsible and lawful online engagement, particularly among younger Nigerians participating in the mandatory national service programme.

“By the end of this year, we will be mobilising only ‘Generation Z’ graduates and we understand the environment they operate in.

“We know this generation loves content creation and we are not against content, but there must be proper context and responsible engagement,”he said.

Speaking on election duties, Nafiu described corps members’ participation as ad hoc staff as an important contribution to democratic governance and national development through support for credible electoral processes across Nigeria.

“It is more noble to serve as election ad hoc staff than merely casting your ballot because you are facilitating credible elections for millions of Nigerians,” Nafiu said.

He urged corps members to view election assignments as opportunities to contribute directly to strengthening Nigeria’s democratic institutions and governance processes through active participation in credible and transparent electoral activities.

Nafiu also commended the First Lady, Sen. Oluremi Tinubu, for donating mobile clinics to support the scheme’s medical outreach programmes aimed at improving healthcare delivery within underserved rural communities nationwide.

According to him, the mobile clinics had improved healthcare delivery during outreach activities by providing facilities for scans, consultations and basic medical tests in underserved communities across Nigeria through the programme.

“Those mobile clinics have consulting rooms and facilities for scans and tests that we previously referred beneficiaries elsewhere to conduct,” Nafiu explained while discussing improvements in healthcare outreach activities.

He explained that the clinics were mainly deployed to underserved rural communities as part of ongoing efforts to expand access to healthcare services and medical support for disadvantaged Nigerians across the federation.

“The objective of our outreach is to reach the unreached and less-served rural dwellers with healthcare initiatives and medical support,” Nafiu said while discussing the goals of the NYSC healthcare outreach programme.

Nafiu, however, said logistics challenges had limited deployment of the mobile clinics to distant states across the federation because transportation required specialised arrangements, technical support and additional operational funding nationwide for smooth movement.

According to him, the clinics were currently stationed in Abuja because moving them over long distances required specialised transportation arrangements and additional operational costs beyond the scheme’s available logistical capacity and support.

“We can conveniently move them to nearby states like Nasarawa, Kaduna and Niger, but taking them to places like Lagos involves major logistics requirements,” Nafiu explained.

He explained that transporting the mobile clinics to distant locations required the use of flatbed carriers and extensive technical support, making deployments to remote states difficult and financially demanding for the scheme.

FBN reports that the NYSC, established in 1973, is a Federal Government scheme designed to promote national unity, integration and development through mandatory one-year national service by Nigerian graduates across Nigeria.

  • Who Cares About Nigeria

    *By Paul Ejime

Foreigners who have lived in Nigeria or interacted with Nigerians at various levels may not only be surprised but ashamed on behalf of Nigerians over what is happening to and in Africa’s most populous nation.

Many are wondering if it is the same country, once called the Giant of Africa, whose citizens are known to be bold, loud, and assertive. The same country that made Africa the centrepiece of its foreign policy and used its oil wealth to fight imperialist regimes, including by nationalising the assets of the powerful British Petroleum (BP), and facilitated the liberation/independence of several other African countries, such as Zimbabwe, Namibia and contributed an estimated USD$61 to anti-apartheid efforts in South Africa.

Is it the same country that deployed its armed forces to support world peacekeeping efforts, especially in Congo, Liberia, Sierra Leone, and also provided Technical Aid support to Black nations on the continent and in the Diaspora in the form of skilled manpower, including judges and teachers?

Is it the same Nigeria that is now unable to safeguard its own independence, relying on a foreign power to deal with its internal security challenges?

What has become of Nigeria’s enormous human capital and natural resources?
Despite its oil revenue, the country has become The Third-Highest Debtor to the World Bank’s International Development Association, with outstanding obligations of USD$18.2bn as of June 30, 2025.

Nigeria has vast arable land, but the latest report by the UN humanitarian agency warns that 35 million Nigerians may face acute hunger from June this year.

Despite the claim by official spin-doctors, the reality is that Nigeria is in dire straits and no longer commands the same international respect as in the past.

This may not be entirely the fault of the present government. However, the troubling observation is that the present crop of Nigerian leaders or the ruling political class does not seem to care. Instead, they are laser-focused on how to acquire or retain political power, or how to win the next election by hook or crook.

A report by Amnesty International said that between May 2023 and 2025, at least 10,217 people were killed ”in attacks by gunmen in Benue, Edo, Katsina, Kebbi, Plateau, Sokoto and Zamfara state. Benue state accounts for the highest death toll of 6,896, followed by Plateau state, where 2,630 people were killed.”

According to the SBM Intelligence report, at least 4,722 people were kidnapped across Nigeria between July 2024 and June 2025, with 2.57 billion Naira paid in ransoms against demands totalling 48 billion Naira.

The killings and abductions have not stopped. If anything, there are daily reports of mounting casualties, including in previously untouched states such as Oyo.

What seems to matter most to the political class is election. Human life no longer matters, and the inexcusable incapacity exhibited by the executive and legislative arms of government has normalised the state of abnormality.

Governance now thrives on denial, with many acclaimed representatives of the citizens being killed and kidnapped, only remembering their constituencies for their votes during elections.

If the ruling party can be accused of trying to wipe out the opposition, opposition parties themselves are also guilty of a failure to put up a united front.

Yes, the government loathes opposition and criticism, and whoever offers an alternative view is dealt with or labelled an enemy of the state, forgetting that governments come and go, while the nation remains.
A self-defeating approach, fear or failure to act can never produce admirable changes or transformation.

The citizens or electorate have not covered themselves in glory. While politicians are playing their selfish, self-serving, fraudulent, and deceitful game – defecting from one political group to another without principle or ideology – the citizens have made themselves dispensable, trading their votes or conscience for a portion of rice or a few Naira notes in an envelope.

It is in this context that the latest Communique by the Patriots, a group of concerned Nigerians led by Chief Emeka Anyaoku, Commonwealth Secretary-General (1990-2000), should be acknowledged.

After their meeting in Lagos on 21st May, the group expressed “serious concern over the unabated killings, kidnapping and the sacking by bandits of communities from their homes and ancestral lands in many parts of the country, including especially in the North East, North West, and North Central and most recently in the South West zones.”

The “non-partisan group of experienced Nigerians who are committed to the entrenchment of one country that is governed by its democratic people’s constitution,” noted “with anguish that the numbers of people being driven into the camps for internally displaced persons (IDPs) have been growing and that more and more farmers are unable to go to their farms thereby increasing the threat of serious food insecurity in the country.”

It therefore urged Nigeria’s Federal Government to “treat insecurity as a national protection, governance and economic survival crisis deserving the setting up of a special committee to advise it on measures to be taken to deal with the different ramifications of the crisis.”

While “acknowledging that the Federal Government has introduced reforms which are stabilizing the economy and improving the macroeconomic prospects of the country,” the Patriots “also expressed their concern at the fact that the level of poverty affecting the masses, especially in the rural areas, remains unacceptably high, with, according to the National Bureau of Statistics, about 63% of the population being multidimensionally poor.”

The group reaffirmed their view of July 2025 “that the myriad challenges facing Nigeria can only be effectively addressed by replacing the country’s present governing system derived from the 1999 constitution, which was imposed on the country by the military regime, with a governance system to be derived from a new democratic people’s constitution produced by an assembly of representatives specifically elected on non-party basis to do so by the citizens of Nigeria.”
In the latest Communique, the Patriots also “expressed concern and worries about the high cost of seeking public offices and electoral participation to the point of excluding a large section of Credible Nigerians from political leadership of the country.”
The group “therefore called on political parties to be more value-driven rather than engage in money politics to the detriment of democracy in Nigeria.”

”With the approaching 2027 national elections, the Patriots decried the absence of ideologically based politics among the country’s political parties, resulting in constant defections of elected representatives from their own to other political parties, thereby confirming the untoward belief that political parties are no more than platforms for seeking power and beneficial public offices,” the Communique said.

The group “urged all the contending political parties to conduct their campaigns on the basis of issues rather than personal vitriolic attacks.”

It also “called on the Nigerian electorate to vote in 2027 for the candidates of the political parties whose manifestoes contain a clear commitment to the restructuring of the country’s present governance system.”

Furthermore, the Communique said the “Federal Government, Nigeria’s Independent Electoral Commission (INEC) and all concerned at the State and Local Government levels should know that the international community will be watching to pass a judgment on the entire conduct of the 2027 national elections.”

At a time when many Nigerians, individuals or groups, including civil society organisations, and the media have chosen silence, either out of fear, complicity, or total resignation, the Patriots deserve encouragement for at least speaking up or speaking out.

The onus is now on the government, the political class, and the citizens themselves to rescue and reposition Nigeria.
