    Barrack Obama –

    Culled from Opera Newsl

In his early twenties, Barack Obama made the decision to relocate to Chicago in order to pursue a career in community organizing. Concurrently, he attempted to make a living as a writer in his spare time. Sheila Miyoshi Jager was a stunning beauty with Japanese and Dutch descent, and he was fortunate enough to meet her while he was stationed there.

They are a wonderful combination and complement each other in a way that makes a lot of sense. When Obama started dating Jager, he was already confident that he would one day become President of the United States. She was one of the few people who shared this goal with him during his time spent working as a community organizer, and she was one of the reasons why.

In the winter of 1986, Barack Obama paid a visit to the home of Michelle Jager’s parents in order to receive their blessing to marry their daughter. Ironically, because they believed their daughter was too young to get married and they were concerned about Obama’s chances of succeeding in the business world, Jager’s parents were against the union. They were also concerned about Obama’s chances of being successful in the business world. Obama was five years older than Clinton, despite the fact that they shared the same birth year (23 vs. 25). Despite the fact that Obama was unable to find any comfort, he did not put an end to his friendship with Jager.

In the year 1988, Barack Obama decided to further his studies by enrolling at Harvard Law School. During his tenure there, he made two separate marriage proposals to Michelle Jager, but she rejected each one. She came to the conclusion that his proposal was motivated less by genuine hope in the possibility of the two of them having a future together and more by “a sense of urgency over their approaching separation.”

When Obama was 28 years old and Robinson was 25 years old, they were both students at Harvard, and that’s where they first became acquainted with one another. Michelle Obama was selected by Barack Obama to serve as his counselor. Even though she was guiding the future President, he still asked Robinson out on a date, and she said yes without any reservations.

In the past, Michelle had stated to the media that Harvard was the party responsible for setting up the marriage between her and Barack. They were together for a short time before they fell madly in love, and his marriage to her helped him get through his period as global king. The future events that had been predicted were becoming closer and closer.….See More

  • MACKY SALL’S DANGEROUS GAME WITH TERANGA LIONS

MACKY SALL’S DANGEROUS GAME WITH TERANGA LIONS

    By Paul Ejime
In a catastrophic end to his third-term project, President Macky Sall announced in July 2023 that he would not seek re-election in February 2024, and many thought he had learnt from history.

But the ambiguity of his press conference late Thursday (23rd February 2024), has cast further doubts on the date for the country’s crucial presidential election, which he had unilaterally postponed.

It would appear that the embattled president is still bent on testing the resolve of his angry compatriots.

Teranga in the Senegalese language Wolof means “peaceful or welcoming place.”

However, Senegal has been anything but peaceful in the past three years, no thanks to the political ambition of a president, who has spent 12 years in office having previously served as Prime Minister and President/Speaker of the National Assembly.

Once considered the bastion of stability in a politically restive West African region, the country is on the verge of losing its democratic credentials.

Before Sall’s July 2023 climb down, unprecedented street protests in June had killed at least 16 people following the jailing of opposition leader Ousmane Sonko, the arrowhead and nemesis of Sall’s third-term project.

Then came the controversial screening of candidates for the presidential election scheduled for 25th February 2024.

Twenty candidates including two women were approved by the Constitutional Council, but some of the candidates screened out, including Karim Wade, the son of former President Abdoulaye Wade, took their case of corruption allegation against two of the Constitutional Council members to Parliament.

But almost from the blues, Sall unleashed a bombshell of a decree on 3rd February cancelling the 25 February election without setting any new dates for the vote.

A macabre drama, similar to the 6th of January 2021 invasion of the Capitol (Congress building) in Washinton, was re-enacted in Senegal on the 5th of February 2024, with paramilitary gendarmes storming the parliamentary chambers in Dakar to eject some opposition MPs, to clear the way for the passage of a controversial law, postponing the presidential election to December 2024.

A fresh round of street protests ensued with at least three deaths, before the Constitutional Council nullified both the presidential decree and law on the 15th of February..

ECOWAS, the regional economic bloc, along with the European Union and indeed, the international community rejected the degree and the controversial law.

They urged Senegalese authorities to respect the country’s electoral calendar and constitutional provisions which stipulates that Sall’s mandate ends on the 2nd of April 2024.

In his response, President Sall took note of the Constitutional Council’s decisions and promised to consult with stakeholders to fix a new date for the presidential vote.

But in his press interview on Thursday, Sall still left everyone guessing. In one breath he said his presidential term would not last beyond 2nd of April 2024, but still casts doubts on the date for the election.

Much more confusing was his reference to a Constitutional provision he says requires an outgoing president to handover to a newly elected one.

Curious observers are wondering if Sall really intends to leave power, even when Senegal’s Constitution is unambiguous that in the absence of the president of the Republic, the President/Speaker of Parliament will assume the presidency.

There are indications that the president still has some surprises up his sleeve for the Teranga nation.

“On April 2, 2024, my mission ends as the head of Senegal,” the president said, seemingly indicating that he would not stay in office beyond the 2nd of April.

“As far as the date (for the presidential election) is concerned, we’ll see what the dialogue comes up with,” he added during a televised press interview.

“The election can be held before or after April 2,” he said, but when pressed, he said he did not think the election would be possible before April 2.

As a gesture of appeasement, Sall has promised to free dozens of political prisoners including Sonko and another opposition leader Bassirou Faye.

But social and political tensions are simmering in Senegal and the animosity generated by his alleged refusal to receive the Chairman of the ECOWAS Authority and Nigerian President Bola Tinubu, who reportedly cancelled his planned peace mission to Senegal can only fuel the political uncertainty in the country and the ECOWAS region.

Sixteen of the 20 presidential candidates cleared by the Constitutional Council have rejected Sall’s invitation to the dialogue he called for Monday and Tuesday to fix a new date for the presidential election.

Like the dissenting political coalitions, many civil society organisations have also rejected his invitation to the dialogue, and instead called for a protest march, claiming the dialogue is a ploy by the president for tenure elongation after the illegal postponement of the presidential vote which the opposition called a “constitutional coup.”

The Constitutional Council, which has the final say on election matters, would be expected to step in again should the stakeholders fail to reach an agreement on the date for the presidential vote.

The situation in Senegal only compounds the problems for ECOWAS, whose leaders are meeting in Abuja on Saturday with the decision of three of its member States – Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger – to withdraw from the regional bloc high on the agenda.

The three and a fourth country, Guinea, are under military dictatorships and ECOWAS is struggling to restore constitutional order through reasonable transition programmes in the wayward countries.

The summit is expected to heed the public appeal for the lifting of ECOWAS sanctions on the four countries by General Yakubu Gowon, one of the ECOWAS founding fathers.

The regional leaders are also expected to discuss the situation in Senegal, unless the country’s delegation manages to knock the issue off the agenda, like they did during the recent extraordinary Ministerial summit of the ECOWAS Mediation and Security Council.

EEDC effects STS prepaid meter upgrade in S/East on Feb. 24

    By Flowerbudnews
The Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) says it will effect its technical implementation for the Standard Transfer Specification (STS) prepaid meter upgrade on Feb. 24 within its network in the South-East.

The company said that from 6a.m. to 10p.m. on the Feb. 24, EEDC’s vending platform would be shut down for technical work for rollover in readiness for the STS prepaid meter upgrade.

EEDC’s Head, Corporate Communications, Mr Emeka Ezeh, told newsmen on Friday in Enugu that as a result of this development, customers would not be able to recharge or purchase energy token during this period.

Ezeh said: “Normal meter recharge activities will commence immediately after the rollover is completed.

“The very first meter recharge by customers after the completion of the rollover will come with three sets of 20 digits token which is needed to upgrade their meters.

“They are expected to punch in the first 20 digits and press “enter”, and then punch in the second 20 digits and press “enter”, and lastly, the third 20 digits which is the energy token, to complete the upgrade process.

“It is advised that earlier purchased tokens that are yet to be loaded onto the meters should be loaded before administering the three sets of 20 digits token, as once the meter is upgraded, such tokens will no longer be accepted by the meter.”

The EEDC spokesman noted that the exercise is free and at no cost to customers and does not affect postpaid and stand-alone meter customers.

Alleged Defamation: High Court acquits journalists, chides police, magistrate over shoddy trial

    By News Desk

The Kwara State High Court, sitting as an appellate court in Ilorin, has discharged and acquitted two journalists convicted of publishing a defamatory article against a rice factory, faulting the police and trial magistrate’s ruling.

In February 2023, a magistrate’s court convicted Alfred Olufemi, an investigative reporter, and Gidado Shuaib, editor of Abuja-based News Digest, over a report against Hillcrest Agro-Allied Industries Limited.

The report published in News Digest in 2018 detailed how the company’s staff members smoked Indian hemp freely within its premises, violating relevant laws and health regulations.

But the journalists immediately appealed the judgement at the state High Court, where a three-man panel reviewed the trial court’s judgement.

The journalists’ lawyer, Yunus AbdulSalam, urged the appellate court to quash the lower court’s conviction. The Abuja-based lawyer argued that the respondent, the prosecution at the lower court, did not prove its case beyond reasonable doubt as the report of the police investigation it relied on was already issued before the appellants were invited for questioning.

He also argued that the trial magistrate did not regard the testimony of the journalists’ key witness and their defence, among other issues raised during the trial.

Delivering its judgement on 14 February, a three-man panel comprising Justice M.O Adegbite, Justice S.B Olanipekun and Justice S.M Akanbi, ruled that they had no difficulty in resolving the issue in favour of the appellants.

“We find merit in the appeal, set aside the conviction and sentence. We allow the appeal and enter a verdict of discharge and acquittal for the appellants,” said the presiding judge, Justice Akanbi.

Reacting to the outcome of the appeal, the journalists’ lawyer, Mr. AbdulSalam described the decision of the court as a victory for his clients and press freedom in Nigeria.

“For nearly six years, these young journalists fought to reclaim their innocence and I’m happy that the appeal court delivered justice. This is a win for truth, press freedom and rule of law,” he said.

Meanwhile, in the 25-page judgement obtained by PRNigeria, the presiding judge took a swipe at the police and the trial magistrate over their roles in the conviction of the journalists.

“I think with all due respect to the learned magistrate, he came to the conclusion after taking into consideration the prosecution’s investigation report which came out before the arrest and invitation of the Appellant.”

The judges stated that besides the fact that the evidence of the prosecution witness sharply contradicted the evidence tendered by the witness, the report coming out before investigation leaves much to be desired.

They maintained that despite the contradiction in evidence presented by the prosecution, the trial court took the narration of the Investigating Police Officer (IPO) hook line and sinker.

“The shoddy and shady investigation embarked upon by the police must have misled the trial magistrate court to its finding without regard to the evidence of the Appellants,” the judgement read.

“Investigation report came before an invitation of the Appellants to exhibit P6 and the defence of the DW1 were jettisoned for the evidence of the prosecution witnesses. Every doubt ought to have been resolved in favour of the defence in criminal cases

Makinde refutes Akpabio’s claim of N30bn for food security

    By Adewale Owoade

The Governor of Oyo State, Seyi Makinde, has refuted claims by the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, that the 36 governors got the sum of N30billion each to address food security in their various states.

Makinde stated this during the commissioning of the newly-renovated multi-billion naira Iseyin Central Mosque facilitated by legal icon, Ahmed Raji, SAN, at Justice Oluwakayode Ariwoola Peace Park, Iseyin in Oyo State.

Akpabio, had on Tuesday during plenary, said that all the 36 governors in Nigeria got N30billion each to address food scarcity and economic hardship.

He stated further that the said money was disbursed by the Federal Government through Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS).

Makinde, while reacting to Akpabio’s claim, urged the Federal Government not to politicise the situation at hand, but rather put in more efforts to tackle the current hardship Nigerians are battling with.

“Let me say it clearly, for Oyo State and for most of my colleagues, there is nothing like N30billion being  given for food security to the states, and I stand to be challenged.

“We’ve been transparent about everything we are doing here in Oyo State and this is time for us to pull together as a nation and solve the problems we are facing.

“It is not a time for blame game and propaganda; hunger, anger are real and as leaders we must address it.”

Furthermore, Makinde commended the Christian body for being part of the commissioning, hailing the religious harmony in Oyo State as exemplary.

“What we have demonstrated by the presence of the Christian community is that in Oyo State we are one, anybody that wants to cause disharmony between us should go elsewhere because it will not work,” he said.

Also speaking, the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar, appreciated Makinde for always being there for the people of Oyo State.

He also called for togetherness to solve the problem facing the nation.

“I appreciate him for speaking in a passionate tone and that is how a leader should speak to his people to let them know he cares for them.

“Seyi, don’t worry, we are with you and will keep on praying for you. We will keep on supporting you because you are on the right track, we keep on supporting you.

“I’m very pleased to see the representative of CAN in Oyo here, and they gave a very beautiful speech, we should replicate this, we are one big family with different religious beliefs.

“Let’s continue to work in peace because without peace we cannot develop, we must come together, find a solution to our problem,” Abubakar said.

Earlier, the facilitator of the Iseyin Central Mosque, Raji, appreciated the governor for his presence, urging citizens of the country to continue to pray for their leaders and to pray to God to lessen the burden of the people.

“As citizens, no matter the challenges we are facing, let us be praying for our leaders. If you curse your leaders, you will have the effect more than they will feel it.

“I appeal to us, let us always pray for them, even when we notice difficulties, pray to God to ease the burden for them,” Raji said.

The event had in attendance the representative of the Christian Association of Nigeria, National Assembly members and top government functionaries from Oyo State as well as Oke Ogun Traditional Council members. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

“The High Court of Kaduna State acquitted him of all charges brought against him by the government.

“Sheikh Ibraheem Zakzaky had embarked on a journey to Iran on October 11, 2023, seeking treatment for himself and his wife, Malama Zeenah Ibrahim.

Alleged fraud: Ali Bello’s co-defendant tackles EFCC on competence of amended charge

    Flowerbudnews

Mr Suleiman Dauda, co-defendant to Ali Bello in the ongoing alleged money laundering charge against them has raised objections against the fresh charges filed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

At the resumed hearing of the case on Thursday, at the Federal High Court, Abuja, Dauda, through his counsel, Mr Nureni Jimoh, SAN, prayed the court to reject the amended charge outrightly.
Jimoh told the court that he had filed an application challenging the amended charge.
The senior lawyer also objected to the presence of the prosecution’s 4th witness in court, Mr Yakubu Haruna, on the ground that his name was not listed on the witness list given to his team.
Counsel to the EFCC, Mr Rotimi Oyedepo, SAN, however, said that he had yet to receive the application filed by Jimoh.
Oyedepo equally said that he had filed the amended charge against the defendants and that all the names of the witnesses he intended to call were listed contrary to Jimoh’s submission.
Meanwhile, the motion challenging the amended charge could not be entertained by the trial judge, Justice James Omotoso due to some flaws discovered in the motion.
The judge subsequently ordered the lawyers to the 2nd defendant to re- file the motion and bring it back to the court on the next adjourned date.
Justice Omotosho said that he would determine the motion first before proceeding with the trial of the defendants.
The amended charge marked: FHC/ABJ/CR/550/2022 has not been read to the defendants for their plea to be taken.
The judge adjourned the matter until Feb. 23 for the motion and objections of the EFCC to be heard.

Boat mishap: Navy conducts search & rescue exercise to reduce incidents

…affirms commitment to saving lives at sea

    By Mkpoikana Udoma

Port Harcourt ( Flowerbudnews): Occasioned by the increasing rate of boat mishaps in the country, the Nigerian Navy, NNS Pathfinder has conducted a search and rescue simulation exercise to save lives at sea.

The exercise was also conducted to curb boat mishap casualties recorded with the nation’s maritime domain.

The exercise was held on the directive of the Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla, to all Naval Commands in the country.

NNS Pathfinder is under the Eastern Naval Command.

It was conducted in conjunction with 10 other agencies including the Nigerian Airforce, Nigerian Army, Civil Defence, Police, NEMA, NIMASA, NIWA, NPA, the Rivers State Government, amongst others.

Speaking, the Naval Commander, NNS Pathfinder, Commodore Desmond Igbo, said the Nigerian Navy was poised to save lives at sea, noting that apart from protecting Nigeria’s maritime domain from both external and internal threats, the Navy also must protect lives.

Igbo also commended the Rivers State Government the Chief of Naval Staff, and the Flag Officer Commanding, Eastern Naval Command, Rear Admiral Saheed Akinwande, for their support in the conduct of the Search and Rescue Simulation Exercise, SAR SIMEX.

“This event is occasioned by the increased rate of boat mishaps and several casualties recorded in Nigeria’s maritime domain including Rivers State.

in recent times. Accordingly, the Nigerian Navy in keeping with its constitutional mandate of ensuring the safety and security of the nation’s maritime environment mobilized other relevant maritime stakeholders to employ a SAR procedure to curb this trend.

“The SAR SIMEX is aimed at exercising the Nigerian Navy and other relevant maritime agencies in Emergency SAR operations to effectively conduct SAR operations in the maritime environment to encourage the Rivers State Government to reactivate its Emergency SAR team.

“The exercise was necessitated by the need for the Nigerian Navy to save lives at sea, apart from protecting the maritime environment including oil and gas assets, we also have the mandate to protect lives and properties, that is why the CNS mandated us to simulate this exercise with other security agencies.

“The point is that we must protect lives, in collaboration with other stakeholders including the Rivers State Government. We already have our Naval boats and ships in the creeks, in case of any emergency.”

Also speaking, Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara, represented by Deputy Governor Ngozi Odu, commended the Nigerian Navy for conducting the exercise and hinted at plans to revitalize the State Emergency Management Agency.

The governor recalled the heroic act of a Rivers indigene, Joe Blankson, who lost his life after rescuing 14 persons during a boat mishap along the Bakana River in 2018.

“We must commend the Nigerian Navy for putting the simulation exercise together, and to let us know that we all have a part to play in ensuring a holistic approach for safety and security on our waterways.”

For his part, the Police Commissioner in Rivers State, Olatunji Disu, who described the marine Police as one of the most important agencies in water operations, assured of readiness to collaborate with other agencies in carrying out rescue operations within the state’s waterways

Meanwhile, the Port Harcourt Area Manager of the National Inland Waterways Authority, Surv. Bernard Ekawu, said NIWA remains passionate concerning safety on the waterways and has already established search and rescue centres across all area offices.

“The Authority is poised to ensure that there is safety on our waterways, however, it needs an interagency collaboration. There is emphasis from the Authority on adherence to safety protocol. We don’t allow sailing at night, boat overloading, rickety boats, and moving without life jackets. So all stakeholders on the waterways must adhere to safety protocol,” NIWA said.

For his part, the South-South Zonal Coordinator of NEMA, Mr Adebiyi Razaq, represented by the Zonal Secretary, Mr Ochoche Samson Ochepo, said NEMA was already carrying out advocacy and sensitization to reduce disasters on the waterways. (Flowerbudnews)
