EFCC Arrests Pastor for N1.3billion Fake Grants, Money Laundering

    By Biola Lawal

(Flowerbudnews): EFCC Operatives have arrested the General Overseer of Faith On The Rock Ministry International, Apostle Theophilus Oloche Ebonyi, for defrauding church members and other Nigerians using fake grants from the Ford Foundation to the tune of N1, 319,040,274.31( One Billion Three Hundred and Nineteen Million, Forty Thousand, Two Hundred and Seventy Four Naira,  Thirty One Kobo).

Ebonyi  was arrested for defrauding his victims, comprising Non Governmental Organisations, NGOs and individuals by advertising an intervention project through his NGO( Theobarth Global Foundation) claiming that the Ford Foundation  was offering a grant of $20,000, 000. 000(  Twenty Billion United State Dollars) to assist the less-privileged in the society.

This was disclosed in a statement by Dele Oyewale, the EFCC Spokesman,a copy of which was made available to Flowerbudnews.

He allegedly beguiled his victims to subscribe as beneficiaries of the phony grant by asking them to pay for registration forms and clusters. Each subscriber was made to pay N1,800,000( One Million, Eight Hundred Thousand Naira only).  Through this arrangement,  Ebonyi allegedly raked in N1,391,040, 274.31.  His subscribers are innocent and unsuspecting Nigerians and NGOs across the country.

Investigations by the EFCC showed that Ford Foundation had no arrangement, grant,  relationship or business with Ebonyi.  The Foundation pointedly disclaimed him and his NGO stressing that it had no link whatsoever with them.  The Commission has also traced five properties he acquired as proceeds of his criminal dealings.

Ebonyi is still reportedly reaching his subscribers on some social media platforms to market his spurious grant from Ford Foundation.

He would be charged to court as soon as investigations are concluded (Flowerbudnews)

New NSCDC Commandant pledges to tackle kidnapping, vandalism in Enugu

    By Flowerbudnews

The new Commandant, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Enugu State, Mr Cyprian Otoibhi, has pledged to tackle kidnapping and vandalism headlong in the state.

Otoibhi gave the pledge on Monday in Enugu after a show-of-force by officers and men of NSCDC Enugu State Command within Enugu metropolis and beyond.

He said that when he came into the state about three weeks ago, “it was kidnapping that was the order of the day”.

“I have met with my officers on ground, and the Command has vowed to tackle the menace headlong and ensure that people are free in the state.

“We are devising means to ensure that the peace-loving people of the state sleep with their two eyes closed and people can live their lives without fear of being abducted,” he said.

The new commandant also said that the state would not be conducive for vandals any more, adding: “I will replicate what I did in Lagos here.”

“Within few months, I assure you that there will be practical evidence that Enugu State is no longer a state where vandals survive,” he said.

Otoibhi said that within three weeks in the office he had been able to fix some of the broken down operational vehicles of the Command; thus, improve the operational capability of the Command.

“As a core operational man, I have fixed some vehicles already and will still do more. The job is in the field and not the office,” he said.

On the show-of-force, the new Commandant said that it was to announce to criminals in town that a new boss is around; and “it will never be business as usual”.

“They should get ready to repent or quietly leave the state to elsewhere; it will not contain them any longer,” he assured.

He also thanked Gov. Peter Mbah for the warm welcome given to him as well as assurance to support the Command with vehicular logistics soon to enhence its operational capacity and capability.

In the show-of-force, the NSCDC personnel moved round New Market axis, Coal Camp axis, Agbani Road axis, Enugu-Port Harcourt Federal Highway, Enugu-Abakaliki Federal Highway, Emene axis, Abakpa Nike axis, Ogui-Ogbete axis and Okpara avenue within Enugu metropolis.

  • Thou shall not steal, especially if you are Methodist.

Thou shall not steal, especially if you are Methodist.

    By Owei Lakemfa

I grew up amongst Methodists and was taught by some of their best like Reverend J Obaba. Methodist Presbyter Samuel Adeoye Osinulu who was Principal of the Methodist Boys High School, MBHS, Lagos from 1955 to 1966, influenced generations of youths.

These included the founding Governor of Lagos State, Brigadier General Mobolaji Johnson; his successor, Naval Admiral Adekunle Shamusideen Lawal; former Ogun State Governor, Segun Osoba; ex-Chief of Air Staff, Air Vice Marshal Nuraini Yusuf; and former National Planning Minister, Chief Rasheed Gbadamosi who actually lived in his house as a boarder.

The MBHS had also produced the founding President of Nigeria, Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe and his fellow nationalist, Chief Hezekiah Oladipo Davis.

Indeed, the Methodists in Nigeria are some of the best Christians on earth. However, the main problem is that for decades, a land-grabbing syndicate which prices earthly things far above heavenly gains, has entrenched itself in the Methodist Church Nigeria, MCN.

This cartel, has an incredibly insatiable appetite for church and school property. In Lagos alone, they have swallowed the lands of the Methodist Primary School, Yaba. They fell on the lands of the Methodist Girls High School, Yaba, Lagos. Only the resistance of the Old Girls has saved the school’s sports field. The cabal has also run the Wesley University, Ondo, aground.

After the Tinubu administration in Lagos returned schools to the missions and former private proprietors, the cartel immediately seized the old MBHS school premises on 11, Broad Street, Lagos and swallowed it.

It was while digesting this, the cabal in 2012 first invaded the MBHS school lands at its new site on 11, Sinari Daranijo Street, Victoria Island wanting to build high-rise private luxury flats for sale to the public.

In the last dozen years, this is the Third Missionary Journey of the MBHS Old Boys after receiving SOS calls from the school, to ‘Come over to Macedonia’ and rescue it from the Church cabal. The battles to save the school lands have been waged each time a Prelate of the MCN is leaving or a new one comes into office.

Let me give a background. Methodist missionaries established the MBHS in 1878. I was privileged to be a student and Prefect when the school marked its centenary.

The first battles were in 2012 when Prelate Sunday Ola Makinde was about departing. The church administration, saying it wanted to raise funds, moved into the school premises to build private flats.

However, the Old Boys led by Mr Toyin Amusan, blocked the move. A peace meeting held on July 11, 2012 with a 17-Member MCN delegation led by Prelate Makinde, agreed to leave the school lands which by then, had been reduced by land grabbers from 5.7 to 3.3 hectares.

The second attempt was in 2021 under Prelate Samuel Chukwuemeka Kalu Uche. This attempt was again resisted by the Old Boys. The MCN led by the Prelate and the Old Boys led by Mr Kolapo Sogbetun, held peace meetings on November 2 and 9, 2021 to resolve the stalemate. Prelate Uche ordered the church and its agents never to touch the school lands again. He however, made two requests of the Old Boys. First, that they should refund the N30 million the Church had spent on construction, and secondly, provide an alternative land for the MCN business ventures. Three days later, the Old Boys formally wrote the church, accepting both requests and also offering to contribute in building the new church business premises. However, the MCN in its November 18, 2021 letter signed by its Secretary, Rt Reverend Michael. O. Akinwale said the Prelate made a mistake in requesting for N30 million and that the actual compensation it wants the Old Boys to pay it is N390 million. But the Old Boys stuck to the initial agreement.

The on-going third stage battles began in 2023 after Prelate Oliver Ali Aba took over the MCN mantle. Compared to his predecessors, Reverend Aba has been the most tactical, brazen and audacious. When his agents who invaded the school lands were evicted in August 2023, he made a tactical withdrawal and then on Monday, January 29, 2024, the MCN cabal returned in full force complete with over five dozen armed thugs who physically attacked the unarmed Old Boys led by 81-year-old Chief Tunde Fanimokun and 85-year-old Reverend Peter Omole.

When I watched the videos of the attacks, they reminded me of the heartless attacks by armed bandits of the Idoma villages which produced Prelate Aba.

Some have questioned how we knew that the attackers are thugs and not members of the church. My answer is simple: Methodists are not scruffy, cudgel-welding, stone-throwing, foul-speaking ‘Area Boys’. In any case, some Old Boys at the scene identified and called by name, some of the clearly drugged attackers because they are known street thugs in the vicinity.

I have also read some opinions online arguing that since the MBHS is in Lagos, the focus should be on the Lagos Diocese not the national MCN. This is an uninformed opinion and an attempt by the Church’s National Headquarters to hide behind a finger.

First, the Lagos State Government handed over the school to the national MCN, not the Diocese. Secondly, the body that surreptitiously obtained a second C of O Number 21/21/20112 signed by Governor Raji Fashola on February 6, 2012, was the MCN. This was a vain attempt to override the subsisting C of O in the name of MBHS, signed by Governor Lateef Jakande on October 25, 1983.

Thirdly, it was the Registered Trustees of the MCN which on July 20, 2012 incorporated the J. Wesley Investment Company limited with N10 million shares. The 14 shareholders who are the Trustees themselves, include then Prelate Sunday Makinde with N3.5 million shares, and his predecessor, Dr Sunday Coffie Mbang with N500,000 shares. Then, the same MCN Trustees on November 11, 2016, illegally, sold 8,235.744 square metres of the MBHS school land to their private company for the princely sum of One Naira (N1)

Fourthly, it is the MCN Trustees and their private J Wesley company that are using the school lands as collateral. Fifthly, it is the twosome that are building commercial flats in violation of the C of O that specifically states that the lands are for educational purposes only.

The truth stands naked; however, the current leaders of the MCN are desperate to robe it in priestly attires. The little veiled aim of the cabal is to relocate the MBHS and take over its entire lands.

Conscientious Nigerians, Methodists worldwide and the Lagos Sate Government need to join the Old Boys in ensuring that not an inch of the MBHS lands is stolen under any guise. (Flowerbudnews)

NAFDAC seals 2 factories for producing 100-millilitre alcoholic beverages in Enugu

    By Flowerbudnews

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has sealed two factories for producing 100-millilitre plastic alcoholic beverages and lack of Good Manufacturing practice (GMP) in Enugu State.

NAFDAC enforcement operatives focused on raiding seven marked alcoholic beverage factories in two days within the state; four factories in Nsukka axis and three factories in Enugu axis.

In the Nsukka axis, two factories were sealed, in another factory its workers ran away on sighting NAFDAC enforcement officers and the last factory was yet to start production.

In the Enugu axis, two of the factories sought for were not in existence and the remaining one relocated out of its known neighbourhood within the metropolis.

Speaking on the development on Monday, the leader of the NAFDAC enforcement team, Mr Wafar Elam, decried the negative effects of irresponsible alcoholic beverage consumption on the health, safety and security of the public.

Elam, who is from the Investigative and Enforcement Directorate of NAFDAC (covering South-South and South-East), said that relative ease and affordability of the small alcoholic beverage and its pocket-size nature had made some school children take the beverage at will.

According to him, uncontrolled access and availability of high concentration alcohol in sachets and small volume or glass bottles have been put forward as a factor contributing to substance and alcohol abuse in Nigeria with its negative impact on the society.

He explained that the consumption alcoholic beverage can lead to renal (or kidney) failure and all sorts of cancer as well as respiratory track infections

“We are here to take an action and enforce the ban on the production of alcoholic drinks in sachets, small volume of plastic and glass bottles below 200 milliliters.

“During the raid, it was discovered that some factories had finished products, while others still have packaging materials in their possession,” he said.

Elam said that the raid followed the expiration of the deadline earlier given by NAFDAC for the ban on the production of alcoholic drinks in sachets, small volume glass and bottles across the country.

He said: “The body had in 2018 directed the stoppage of production or sale of all alcoholic drinks in sachets, small volume glasses and bottles by the end of December 2023.

“This followed the recommendation of a committee comprising the Federal Ministry of Health, NAFDAC and the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission and Industry in December 2018.

“The committee premised their arguments on the fact that the rate at which the underage population has access to alcohol was quite alarming because the manufacturers of the products make it accessible and affordable to everyone.

“It argued that due to its availability in sachets, many people are exposed to drinking too much alcoholic beverage at an early stage in life. As a result, underage drinking has become a major public health problem in the country.” (Flowerbudnews)

GOC stresses need for involvement of TTP, Training and Retraining in checkmating insecurity

    By Flowerbudnews

Maj.-Gen. Hassan Dada, the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 82 Division of the Nigerian Army, has stressed the need for training, retraining and involvement of Tactics, Techniques and Procedures (TTPs) in checkmating insecurity.

Dada said this on Monday in Enugu while declaring opening the 82 Division Operational Planning Cadre, which would run between Feb. 5 and Feb. 9 within the Division’s Headquarters in Enugu.

The GOC noted that the Operational Planning Cadre (training/retraining) had become expedient considering the increased participation of the Nigerian Army in exercises, joint and multinational operations.

According to him, there is also the need for adherence to Tactics, Techniques and Procedures (TTPs) in the conduct of military operations.

“The prevailing security situation in the country coupled with some peculiar events within the Division’s Area of Responsibility (AoR) especially the recent agitation of secessionist groups has made it imperative that we continue to train, retrain and evolve our TTPs where necessary.

“This Cadre keys into the clear Command Philosophy outlined by the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), which is to – Transform the Nigerian Army into a Well-Trained, Equipped and Highly Motivated Force towards Achieving Our Constitutional Responsibilities within a Joint Environment -.

“This philosophy aligns perfectly with the aim of this Cadre, which is to refresh and equip our officers and other participants with requisite skills to plan, organise and execute military operations seamlessly in conventional and asymmetrical warfare situations.

“Participants are therefore encouraged to take the Cadre seriously by paying utmost attention in order to understand what is being taught and also make meaningful contributions,” he said.

The GOC warned that the army and security agencies cannot afford to be complacent in ensuring adequate preparation to face existing and other futuristic security challenges, adding: “Hence, this Cadre is an essential step in that direction”.

He noted that the resource persons for the training from the Armed Forces Command and Staff College are highly experienced and knowledgeable on the subject matter.

“I urge all participants to actively engage in all the activities and discussions, for I firmly believe that inputs will prove invaluable in enhancing our capabilities.

“Additionally, the understanding and integration of the role of air power and achievable/actionable intelligence for positive outcomes in the conduct of operations are essential,” he said.

The GOC revealed that some personnel of military and paramilitary agencies are taking part in the training, adding that their participation and collaborative partnership would enhance the Cadre and demonstrate the importance of inter-agency cooperation in addressing security challenges.

“I am confident that with your active participation and the wealth of experience of our resource persons, we will emerge from this Cadre better equipped to fulfill our constitutional responsibilities within a joint environment.

“Thereby, transforming the Nigerian Army into a well-trained, equipped and highly motivated force,” he added.

Some personnel of military and paramilitary agencies participating in the Cadre are drawn from the Nigerian Air Force; Nigeria Police, NSCDC, DSS, FRSC, Nigerian Customs, Nigerian Immigration Service, NDLEA and Federal Fire Service among others.

Ali Bello, co-defendant’s trial  Adjourned until Feb. 6

    Flowerbudnews

A Federal High Court, Abuja has adjourned the trial of Ali Bello and his co-defendant, Dauda Suleiman, until Tuesday for continuation of hearing in a charge filed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
Justice James Omotosho adjourned the matter after Edward Bannada, the 2nd prosecution witness of EFCC, was cross-examined and re-examined by counsel for the defence and prosecution.

While A.M. Aliyu, SAN, appeared for Bello, the 1st defendant, Nureini Jimoh, SAN, represented Suleiman, the 2nd defendant in the suit marked: FHC/ABJ/CR/550/2022.

While being cross-examined by Jimoh with respect to the evidence he tendered (statements of accounts), Bannada, an official of the United Bank for Africa (UBA), said he could not remember seeing the names of the two defendants as beneficiaries who made withdrawals from the bank statements tendered.
He, however, confirmed that Abdulsalam Hudu made most of the withdrawals from the account statements.
The Witness also stated that he played no role in the entries contained in the statements of account and only became a witness in the matter due to EFCC’s invitation.
Bannada also confirmed that the cash transactions of the Kogi State Government and the Kogi State Government House Administration, as seen in the statements of account, were majorly inflow of security funds and the cash withdrawal of the inflow, which did not contravene the Cash Withdrawal Policy of the CBN, the bank or any law.

He also confirmed that the withdrawal by Hudu did not exceed the limit of the security fund lodgement.

When the anti-corruption agency’s lawyer, Rotimi Oyedepo, SAN, attempted to re-examine the witness on the issue of the absence of the name of Ali Bello and Dauda Suleiman on the statements of account and the operation of a computer, tte court overruled him.

The matter was consequently adjourned until Feb. 6 for trial continuation.

EFCC had, on Dec. 15, 2022, arraigned Bello, identified as a nephew of former Gov. Yahaya Bello of Kogi, and Suleiman on a 10-count charge of alleged misappropriation and money laundering.

The anti-graft body claimed the duo, alongside Hudu, a cashier at the Kogi State House who is at large, withdrew N10.2 billion from the state’s treasury for personal use.

NYSC Has Stopped Posting Corps Members To ‘Very Unsafe States’ – FG

The Federal Government said members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) are no longer posted to states deemed unsafe in the wake of worsening security conditions in the country.

Several corps members have been abducted in some parts of the country during their one-year mandatory national service, raising fears about the sustainability of the scheme.

But the Minister of Youth Jamila Ibrahim says the scheme has taken steps to secure NYSC members including posting them only to safe states.

“As an immediate intervention of the government and the NYSC as an agency, we have actually stopped posting corps members to the very unsafe states,” Jamila said on Channels Television’s current affairs show Sunday Politics.

We have been doing it. We have been doing it in the past. There are states we have not been posting corps members to to ensure their safety,” she added.

According to her, the security of corps members requires collaboration with other agencies of government.

“When it comes to security matters, it is a multi-sectoral approach. So, it is not the NYSC alone and the ministry that is involved. We are working with security outlets to ensure corps members are safe,” the minister maintained.

“We are also working on group transportation strategies for them to ensure that they are transported to and from camps safely and to their destinations.”

The minister said the Federal Government is working on reforming the NYSC scheme to reflect the present realities of the nation, particularly in the area of their allowance.

“When it comes to remuneration, we are looking at the holistic funding of the NYSC. You are all aware that we have announced a reform of the NYSC scheme itself. We want the scheme to go beyond being a social programme of the government,” she added.

“The reforms will actually transform the NYSC into a revenue-generating agency and prepare corps members for the job market.

  • We Can’t Say For Sure,’ Youth Minister Speaks On Raising Corps Members’ Allowance

We Can’t Say For Sure,’ Youth Minister Speaks On Raising Corps Members’ Allowance

The Minister of Youth Development, Jamila Bio-Ibrahim, says it is not certain that the Federal Government will increase the monthly allowance of serving members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC

Bio-Ibrahim, who was a guest on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics programme, said the government would find innovative ways of ensuring that corps members’ welfare are well-taken of.

In January 2020, the government raised allowance for corps members from N19,000 to N33,000, about a year after then President Muhammadu Buhari signed the new minimum wage bill into law in April 2019.

With food inflation and increasing cost of living over the years, there have been calls by youths serving in the NYSC scheme that the government raise their monthly allowance colloquially called, Alawee, even as the President Bola Tinubu administration inaugurated a minimum wage committee last Tuesday.

Asked whether or not there are immediate plans to increase the monthly allowance of corps members on Sunday, the minister said, “We can’t say for sure, we all understand that resources are dwindling, even oil revenues are not as they used to be but we will find innovative ways of ensuring that corps members’ welfare are well-taken of. ”

Bio-Ibrahim further said, “When it comes to remuneration and looking totally at the holistic funding of the NYSC, we have announced a reform of the NYSC scheme itself. So, we want the scheme to go beyond that social programme of government to be that revenue-generating scheme and agency.

“The reforms which transform the NYSC into a revenue-generating agency and prepare the corps members for the job market and to be decently and gainfully employed or to be employers of labour through entrepreneurship and of course, perfect matching into primary assignment and all the support they need in that career path.”

The minister also said as an immediate measure, the NYSC has stopped posting corps members to unsafe states. She said the matter was a multi-sectoral approach and the NYSC has been working with security agencies for the safety of corps members in the country.
