Cost of Living: Cleric tasks FG on effective fiscal, monetary policies

    By Salisu Sani-Idris

An Abuja-Based Islamic cleric, Imam Yahya Al-Yolawi has urged the Federal Government to come up with effective fiscal and monetary policies to address the rising cost of living in the country.

Al-Yolawi made the call while delivering the Jumma’at sermon titled,” Prayers, Repentance and Taking Measures: Way out to High Cost of Living in Nigeria,” on Friday in Abuja.

” It is very imperative for the Federal, State and Local Governments to come up with decisive actions to address the underlying economic challenges facing the country.

” This may include implementing sound fiscal and monetary policies to stabilise the economy, curb inflation, and promote sustainable growth. “he said.

He also advised the government to prioritise investments in key sectors such as agriculture, infrastructure, security and healthcare, to create jobs, stimulate economic activities and improve the quality of lives in the country.

According to him ,the high cost of living is a multifaceted problem that touches every aspect of lives.

He said many families were finding it increasingly difficult to make ends meet.

” From the rising prices of essential goods and services to the increasing cost of housing, healthcare, and education.

” The situation is exacerbated by factors such as inflation, economic instability, and inadequate social safety nets, leaving many citizens struggling to provide for themselves and their loved ones.

” As citizens we have a responsibility to advocate policies that prioritise the well-being of all Nigerians, especially as the month of Ramadan is fast approaching.

” We urge our leaders to address the root causes of the high cost of living and to implement concrete measures to alleviate the financial burden on ordinary citizens. “he said.

He also emphasised the need for government to take steps to improve the efficiency and transparency of public institutions, to combat corruption and ensure that resources were used effectively for the benefit of the people.

” This may include strengthening accountability mechanisms, promoting good governance, and cracking down on waste and mismanagement in the public sector.

” Additionally, the government must prioritise social welfare programmes and safety nets to provide assistance to the most vulnerable members of society.

” This may include expanding access to healthcare, education, and social services, and providing targeted support to low-income families and individuals.”he said.

Al-Yolawi, however, enjoined the citizens to reflect on the concept of moderation and simplicity in their lifestyles.

” Islam encourages us to live within our means, avoid extravagance and wastefulness, and prioritise our needs over our wants.

” Also, let us not underestimate the power of community and mutual support in times of need. Islam places great emphasis on the concept of brotherhood and sisterhood, and encourages us to help one another in times of difficulty.

” While the challenges of high living costs may seem daunting, let us remember that with every trial comes an opportunity for growth and renewal.

” Let us turn our hearts and minds towards a powerful and transformative tool that is available to us all: prayers (Duas). In the face of the high cost of living in Nigeria, it is easy to feel overwhelmed and helpless.

” However, we must remember that as Muslims, we have a direct line of communication with our Creator, and through prayer, we can seek guidance, mercy, and relief from our difficulties.” (NAN)

High cost of living: Osun youths take to streets of Osogbo in protest

Youths in Osun State have staged a peaceful march in protest of the high cost of goods and services and the rising cost of living in the country.

The youths who were led in protest by leaders of civil societies organisations in the state on Friday in Osogbo also used the protest to call on the federal and state governments and other stakeholders to immediately intervene and save the country from momentary collapse.

The protesters had defied the heavy presence of police operatives near the scene of the protest as they assembled along MDS Road, Osogbo very early on Friday.

Addressing the protesters who were armed with placards bearing different inscriptions such as ‘change the unfavourable policies’, ‘Nigerians are suffering, we can’t cope again’, and ‘We are humans, stop mistreating the citizens’, among others, the chairman, Osun Civil Societies Coalition, Waheed Lawal, said the protest would continue until the Federal Government thinks out solutions to the current economic hardship ravaging the country.

In his words, “Government must ameliorate the suffering of the people. They must do whatever they need to do to make sure that the people live in better conditions.

“Nigerians deserve the best. They promised us renewed hope but what they are giving us now is renewed hardship. We reject renewed hardship in our lives, and in our economy because Nigerians deserve the best.

What Nigerians want is a peaceful atmosphere. We don’t want insecurity in our land again. We can’t travel from Osogbo to Ibadan without panicking. You will be thinking that they will kidnap you.

“The abduction of monarchs is the order of the day in our country now. We urge the government to provide security for the lives and property of the citizens. It is their responsibility, it is a constitutional responsibility.

“Every government that fails to provide security for the lives of the citizens is no longer a government. What we are saying is simple, we are ready to face the government in this hardship and we are marathon runners.

We have started this struggle today and if the government fails to listen to us, we will continue to mobilise our people to protest this hardship because enough is enough.”

DAILY POST recalls that the Osun State Police Command had in a statement signed by its spokesperson, Yemisi Opalola warned against any plans to hijack peaceful protests in the state.

Opalola in the statement revealed that the police were in possession of intelligence, revealing that some criminal elements intended to hijack any peaceful protests and use the avenue to cause chaos in the state

  • OLUMIDE LAWAL; ANOTHER MEDIA ROSE PLUCKED BY THE COLD HANDS OF DEATH

OLUMIDE LAWAL; ANOTHER MEDIA ROSE PLUCKED BY THE COLD HANDS OF DEATH

    By Chief Dr Ayodele Adeyemo

Flowerbudnews/:  Mondays are unique, especially in this part of the world, where we rigidly regard days for special activities such as days for business, social events, and rest. Of all days, Monday is loaded with seriousness and freshness, and as the enigmatic Afro musician Fela Anikulapo-Kuti sang, it is a day of huzzling in Fela’s words, “Eko, ko ni gba igbakugba lojo monde” simply translated, “no nonsense in Lagos on Monday.” You can then imagine receiving such a call at 7.00 am. on the demise of a bosom friend. That was it on Monday, February 5, 2024, when a mutual friend between him and I, Alhaji Olohunde Hassan broke the news of the passing on of OLUMIDE LAWAL a.k.a Castro, a renowned journalist and publicist with a call all the way from Lagos. Torrents of questions were fired to Hassan, who immediately understanding my frame of mind, changed his information dissemination pattern by saying he just wanted to confirm from me what happened to Olumide since he knew that I and some other friends are together in Ede. In cutting off his phone, he just said, “Chief, I will confirm and call you back.” Definitely, his information was real and complete. Castro has gone away without bidding anyone, friends, colleagues, and most importantly, his immediate and large family farewell.

Many cognomens and imaginary features have been given to Death. The simplest and most descriptive is “separator.” Death does that perfectly in separating human earthly relationships without a blink. That was how it was on the day our friend Olumide was called by his maker. AbdulLatif Olumide Lawal a.k.a Castro breathed his last and left the stage in the evening of Sunday, February 4, 2024, after some 72 eventful years on earth.

Olumide Lawal was born in Ailaka Compound in Ede, precisely on January 11, 1952, to Pa AbdulWahab Iyanda Lawal and Madam Rafatu Ayoka both of blessed memory . AbdulLatif Olumide was raised by his late paternal grandmother, Alhaja Sinatu Abegbe. Young AbdulLatif was a pet to Mama Sinatu to the effect that she was usually called IYA LATI .

As a journalist, Olumide caught his teeth in Radio Nigeria, Ibadan, and traversed virtually all aspects of functional media, electronic, print, and social media, including public relations, biography writing and personality promotions. He was a versatile feature writer on events, places, and personalities. As a wordsmith, OLUMIDE was a master of the art. He was an avid reader with so many books in his library. If he knew you as that kind of a genre of a human being, you automatically become Olumide’s paddy.

Olumide was different things to different people. This is human and not in any way strange. To some people, he was perceived as easily prone to anger but not quarrelsome. To many, he was gentle and would want to remain discreet with his personal challenges and efforts. However, the common denominator by whoever came across Olumide is that he could be unbelievably generous and kind.

Olumide is unquestionably an unrepentant Ede Patriot, a well-known feature writer on Ede sons and daughters. He would never compromise the perceived interests of the ancient town. On this towering virtue, a friend of his, Bayo Adediran says: “Alhaji Olumide brandished the pen as truly mightier than the sword during his lifetime as he delighted in confronting not only the government but also any person at all, that tried to cast aspersions on Edeland and her illustrious sons and daughters. In this area, he had no rival as he did not care whose ox was gored in his stout defence of his cradle, Edeland, and fellow compatriots of the ancient city.”

For those who looked at him from far prisms, Olumide could be mistakenly taken as tempramental. He also was aware of this perception of him. At times, people found his articles very vitriolic, especially on the issues that concern Ede interests. As a man of principle, he explained himself in one of his many public-spirited articles where he said: “That was my love for Edeland. I leave the rest to posterity.” Hummnn!!

A very childhood friend of Olumide is Elder Adedayo Adeoye, a retired Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG)) who, on hearing his death, was lividly shaken. It took him hours to fathom the shocking news. As expected, Adeoye DIG Rtd took the loss of a bosom friend with christian equanimity: “On the death of mine childhood mate, I say to God be the glory. He takes us at His will. Who are we to question Him? To Abdul Lateef, you told me and Alhaji Mumini Salam when we visited you that you would soon be at home. Is this the home you promised? No! I am at a loss to believe that you have departed this sinful world.”

In another tribute by High Chief Tunji Lawal, Babasanya of Edeland, a school colleague, he has this to say in a poetic way: “I will miss you, Adventiist Grammar School, Ede Old Students Association, the Media Group, all your friends and associates, Ede Senior Citizens Club, Federation of Ede Descendants Union, Ede Elders Council, the entire Sons and Daughters of Ede will all miss you. Kaabiyesi, Timi of Ede, Oba (Dr) Munirudeen Adesola Lawal, Laminisa 1, who shut down the Monday weekly palace sitting and ordered your exit day as a day of mourning for all Chiefs and Mogajis will miss you more. Kabiyesi ordered the attendance of the Chiefs and Mogajis at your dignified burial led by the Chief Immam of Ede Land and the Immams in Council with the Grand Mufti of Yoruba Land”. This can be appropriately described as a tribute from the palace of His Royal Majesty, who traditionally is not supposed to mourn. Hummnn!!

The remarks made by Emeritus Professor John Ayoade, a distinguished community leader in Ede, say it all with this remark in his tribute : “No news is good news. Surely not the news of Olumide’s death. He left a legacy and a good memory. He was passionate about Ede. He was respectful and equally respectable. Above all, he was genuine.”

The outpouring of emotions was spontaneous and legendary for a man that many of us regarded as someone who devoted his writing skills to illuminate the minds of the public on salient, human, and societal issues. Olumide was a flowery rose plucked by the cold hands of death, sending chills to his families, soul mates, colleagues, and town mates.

Olumide is gone, only his work and memories remain.
What else do we say about a man who spent his lifetime promoting and defending his birth place.

Sleep on peacefully our own lovely Castro, in Aljaena Fridaus. (Flowerbudnews)

  • Witness admits not including alleged “oral sex” experience, others in her statements against UNICAL professor

Witness admits not including alleged “oral sex” experience, others in her statements against UNICAL professor

    Flowerbudnews

TKJ (not real name), the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC)’s star witness, on Wednesday, admitted she did not include in her two statements to the commission the allegations that Prof. Cyril Ndifon forced her to give him “a blow job” in his car because she was ashamed about the incident.

TKJ, who is the ICPC’s 2nd prosecution witness (PW2), stated this while being cross-examined by Ndifon’s counsel, Joe Agi, SAN, before Justice James Omotosho of a Federal High Court, Abuja.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that during the ICPC’s investigation, TKJ, one of the alleged victims of allegation of sexual harassment against Ndifon, the suspended Dean of Faculty of Law, University of Calabar (UNICAL), wrote two extra-judicial statements dated Nov 9, 2023 and Nov. 10, 2023 at the Calabar office of the anti-corruption commission.

Blow job, according to a dictionary meaning, is an act of oral sex performed on a man.
NAN had, on Tuesday, reported that the witness, while giving her evidence-in-chief, alleged that the suspended dean came to the front of her hostel in a tinted glass car and asked her to joined him.

She alleged that while having a discussion with him, he tried to put his hand inside her trousers but she stopped him from doing that..

She further alleged that Ndifon later brought out his manhood and forcefully put it in her mouth.to suck.

NAN reports that Ndifon was, on Jan. 25, re-arraigned alongside Sunny Anyanwu as 1st and 2nd defendants on an amended four-count charge bordering on alleged sexual harassment and attempt to perverse the cause of justice.

Anyanwu, who is one of the lawyers in the defence, was joined in the amended charge filed on Jan. 22 by the ICPC on allegation that he called TKJ on her mobile telephone during the pendency of the charge against Ndifon to threatened her.

However, during cross-examination on Wednesday, Agi asked TKJ: “You told this court that the 1st defendant forced you to do a blow job?”

“Yes, in his car. He bent my neck and gave me N3000 after for treatment,” she responded.
“I put it to you that, that is not true,” the lawyer said, but TKJ insisted it was true.

Agi also put the question to TKJ that the allegation that Ndifon tried to make her do blow job with him in his office was also untrue but she said it was true.

The senior lawyer then asked her if she made statements to ICPC on those two occasions and she answered in affirmative.
“In those two different days, you never told ICPC in your statements that the 1st defendant did blow job with you; you just manufactured that later?” he asked.
Responding, TKJ said: “I did not tell them in my statements because I was ashamed about it.”
She had also told the court that when Ndifon forcefully bent her neck to give him a blow job, she cried and went and told her roommates in the hostel.
But when the lawyer asked her if she put the experience about informing her roommates in the statements, the witness admitted she did not.
She equally admitted that she did not put it in her statement that Ndifon gave her N3000 for treatment after the blow job experience.
TKJ said she only gave summary of what transpired between Ndifon and her, besides feeling ashamed of the whole scenario.
When Agi asked her how many people were with her when she was making the statements, the PW2 said about three people.
Reacting, the lawyer said it couldn’t have been shame that made her not to write details of her experience since there were more people in the courtroom than where she wrote the statements, “that you just don’t want to tell the true.”
But TKJ, who insisted it was shame, broke into tears behind the shield.
Agi further asked her if she wrote in her statements the allegation that Ndifon made her to do a nude video of herself putting her two fingers in her vargina inside toilet and sent to him.
“I did not tell the ICPC about the nude video I did inside the toilet where I put my two fingers in my vargina because I only did a summary of it in my statement,” she said.
The witness said she did all the chats and others with Ndifon because of the admission he promised her and because of her safety after the sexual harassment.
She disagreed with the lawyer that the anti-corruption commission guided her on what to write.
“The ICPC Did not guide me on what to write,” she said.
Taking TKJ on one of the exhibits which captured some of the WhatsApp chats with Ndifon, the lawyer asked that those communications which were between her and the embattled professor were supposed to be a secret between them, but the witness said she did not willingly do it
“Did he put a gun on your head?” he asked, but she said Ndifon did not put a gun on her head.
“Would you have been happy if 1st defendant had sent those messages and videos to people? Agi asked again.
“I will not be happy if he had shared it with people because I was not happy sending them,” she responded.
Earlier while being led in evidence by ICPC’s lawyer, Osuobeni Akponimisingha, TKJ said she received a strange call from Mr Sunny Anyanwu, one of Ndifon’s lawyers, after the suspended don was granted bail.
“A strange number called me and when I picked, the person called me by my native name.
“He told me his name was Barrister Sunny. And he said that Prof told him that I am from Enugu State.
“I told him I am not from Enugu State. He asked me where I am from and ai told him.
“I asked him why he called he said he called because of Professor Cyril, his friend.
“He said he is from Enugu State. He also said he blamed his friend for everything that had happened. He said they have been friends for long
“I told him that I have been traumatised a lot he said he knew” she said.
The witness told the court that Anyanwu told her on phone not to honour ICPC’s invitation or write anything if they asked her to.
“He said if I do what he asked me to do, he would give me a better admission outside University of Calabar,” she added
She said she had neither met nor seen Anyanwu before.
Meanwhile, Justice Omotosho had adjourned until Feb 9 to rule on the bail applications of Ndifon and Anyanwu.
The judge, who adjourned the matter after counsel for the defence and prosecution adopted their processes and presented their arguments for and against the bail plea, hinted that he was inclined to grant bail to the duo.
He said since bail was a constitutional right and the offences for which they were being charged were bailable ones, the defendants might likely be admitted to bail since the star witness who was alleged to have been threatened on phone had concluded her testimony.(NAN)(www.nannews.ng) / Flowerbudnews
