EEDC gives reason for power outage in Imo

The Enugu Electricity Distribution Company, EEDC, has blamed the power outage in Imo State on industrial action by workers

Emeka Ezeh, head of Corporate Communications, EEDC, disclosed this in a statement on Thursday.

He explained that the electricity workers union shut down Egbu Transmission Station causing darkness in the state.

The Enugu Electricity Distribution Company PLC (EEDC) wishes to inform her esteemed customers in Imo State that the loss of supply currently being experienced is as a result of the industrial action by the organised labour union in Imo State.

“This led to the union shutting down our source of supply at Egbu Transmission Station, leaving us with no energy to distribute to our customers.

“As a result of this development, the whole of Imo State is without electricity supply.

We appreciate the inconveniences this situation must have caused our customers, and we hope that the issue will be resolved soon.

“Be assured that we are on standby to restore supply once the industrial action is called off.

“EEDC is committed to improving on its processes and delivering improved services to her esteemed customers,” the statement said.

  • Reps move presidential yacht budget to student loan

Reps move presidential yacht budget to student loan

Following public outcry over the allocation of N5.095 billion for the purchase of a presidential yacht in the 2023 supplementary budget, the House of Representatives, on Thursday, said it had scrapped the budgetary allocation.

Chairman of the House Appropriations Committee, Abubakar Bichi, disclosed this in an interview with journalists on Thursday. He said the budgetary allocation for student loans was also increased from five billion to N10 billion.

He said the committee also increased the budgetary allocation of Ministry of Defence from N 476 billion to N546 billion.

Bichi also disclosed that the minimum wage for workers was considered and approved for onward transmission to the executive. He promised proper legislative oversight to ensure 100 per cent implementation.

    The yacht budget

In the supplementary budget sent to the National Assembly by the President, the Federal Government had allocated N5 billion to purchase a presidential yacht.

The proposed sum was under the capital expenditure of the Nigerian Navy’s budget.

According to the breakdown, the Navy will require N62.8 billion for its operations, with recurrent expenditure and capital expenditure gulping N20.4 billion and N42.3 billion, respectively

But Bichi said the five billion naira for the presidential yacht has been yanked off from the budget.

He said: “Actually We have submitted our reports to the House and after careful consideration, the House has approved our submissions and the breakdown is as follows:

As you know, the budget is about N2.1 trillion and the Ministry of Defence has about N456bn but currently the Ministry of Defence has the largest share because we know how important our security is. As you are aware, we had interactions with them yesterday. Currently, we have increased their budget from N456 billion to N546,209,099,671 billion.

For Police formation and command, we gave them N50bn while the FCT has about N100bn. You know FCT is very important to us, so we want to make sure that FCT can compete with any state in the world. That is why we gave them N100bn.

“On the Office of National Security, their initial budget was N27bn but currently we have increased it to N50bn. For the state house, their initial budget was N28bn and we maintained that.

“On Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, you know how important that ministry is. We maintained their initial figure of N200bn as well. For the Ministry of Housing, you know we have a serious housing deficit in the country and Mr President’s agenda, he wants to build as much as he can, so we have approved N100bn for housing.

“Service-wide votes initially was N615 but currently we reduced to N515bn.

    INEC budget

“For INEC, initially their budget was N18bn, and yesterday we had an interaction with the INEC Chairman and he convinced us with his submissions and we maintained their N18bn.

“So far, we have approved N2,176,791,286,33. We will continue to support the government so we can deliver democracy.

On the presidential yacht, Bichi said: “Actually, as far we are concerned, we don’t have that anymore. We have increased the student loan.

“Initially, student loan was N5bn in the budget but we have increased it by N5bn so that our students can access that facility in order for them to go to school. We don’t have the yacht anymore in budget.”

He assured that lawmakers would ensure adequate oversight over the way the funds are spent.

He added: “Our members, especially those standing committees, oversight those projects and ensure the money is used judiciously. From now till three months time, we are going to call them and ask them what they have done with the money.”

  • DTAC to strengthen soft-power diplomacy in promoting Nigeria’s interest – DG

DTAC to strengthen soft-power diplomacy in promoting Nigeria’s interest – DG

    By Maureen Okon

Abuja:   Dr Yusuf Yakub, the new Director-General, Directorate of Technical Aid Corps (DTAC), says he will focus on strengthening soft-power diplomacy in promoting Nigeria’s interest.

Yakubu said this when he paid a courtesy visit to the Chairman/CEO, Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), Mrs Abike Dabiri-Erewa.

In a statement on Wednesday in Abuja by Mr Nkem Anyata-Lafia, his Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Yakub said he would work with NiDCOM to strengthen collaboration in areas of common interest beneficial to Nigeria.

He explained that the DTAC was in the business of promoting the nation’s bilateral and multilateral ties across the globe through the deployment of technical aid to African, Caribbean and Pacific countries.

He added that DTAC aimed to widen its scope of coverage through the use of soft-power diplomacy, which remains the way to go in a world where instruments of coercion were no longer needed to wield influence.

The DG said that the visit to NiDCOM was to share his vision for synergy and collaboration to strengthen the mandates of both agencies in deepening relations with the global community.

He said that the collaboration was important because every deployed volunteer from DTAC is automatically a member of Nigerians in the Diaspora.

Yakub urged Nigerians in the Diaspora to work with Nigerian Missions to serve as the greatest marketers of the Nigerian dream, “as against the present situation where the Diasporans hardly see the Missions as home abroad”.

“I also propose the establishment of a Desk Office manned by NiDCOM officers, who will ensure a smooth and seamless liaison between the Missions and the Diasporans in the bid to fully involve them in driving foreign direct investments for Nigeria,” he added.

Responding, the NiDCOM Chairman said she was optimistic that collaboration with DTAC would be in the best interest of the nation.

Dabiri-Erewa urged the DG to deploy his experience as a former Chairman, House Committee on Foreign Affairs, to advance Nigeria’s interest across the globe. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng) /Flowerbudnews

  • Africans can achieve full democracy without foreign aid, says Don

Africans can achieve full democracy without foreign aid, says Don

    By Taiye Olayemi

Dr Ugo Aniga of the Department of Peace Studies and Conflict Resolution, Ajayi Crowther University, Oyo State, says Africans can only achieve full democracy when its leaders jettison foreign aid.

Aniga made the remark during the 2023 Centre for Black and African Arts and Civilisation (CBAAC) annual public lecture, on Tuesday in Ibadan.

According to Aniga, the future of Africa’s democracy depends on the operations of its leaders with their western counterparts.

The theme of the lecture is: “Culture, Security and The Future of Democracy in Sub-Sahara Africa”.

He said Africans must learn to confront their challenges and proffer solutions to them independently without western influence or aids.

“The only way to achieve full democracy is to run away from foreign aids, we must learn to confront our problems and proffer African solutions to African problems.

“Africans’ greatest problem is neo-colonialism and we must be conscious of the fact that democracy cannot triumph where there is neo-colonialism, injustice and bad governance.

“African governments  must also note that insecurity cannot be curbed when the masses are hungry,” he said.

Also speaking, Dr Adetayo Ogunlewe, Secretary General, Platform for African Culture and Development (PACUD), Ibadan, described democracy as a state of mind and borrowed ideology instilled on Africans.

Ogunlewe said to achieve full democracy, democratic studies must be inculcated in schools’ curriculum to acculturate Africans to its dictates.

“We need to teach democratic studies in schools from primary level through to the tertiary institutions, so that we all can understand what we want to achieve,” he said.

Dr Temitope Bello of the Department of Political Science, Kola Daisi University, Ibadan, noted that to tackle the problem of insecurity in Africa, the African culture of selflessness, honesty and taking responsibility must be displayed by every African.

“Conspiracy, cover-up and extremism practiced in the nation, which are not reported, is against the African culture of honesty.

“We must go back to the status-quo as Africans and begin to bridge the gap between ethnic loyalty and national unity, we must desist from covering up crimes but be one another’s neighbour,” she said.

On his part, Dr Sola Olorunyomi of the Institute of African Studies, University of Ibadan (UI), said that Africans must take cognisance of upholding indigenous languages to achieve continental development.

He said Africans must desist from playing dumb to the issue of promoting their languages which could be considered a vital aspect of culture capable of enhancing knowledge in individuals.

“Being able to speak our local languages will help in accessing great education from technical knowledge to scientific information, to the lowest impulses,” he said.

Earlier,  Oluwabunmi Amao, Director-General of CBAAC, noted that the democratic journey of the

African continent had been quite a tortuous one as the democratic gains were fast being eroded on account of insecurity.

She said that this was a sad departure from the African Union’s aspiration for peace on the continent and the subsequent designation of the year 2020 as the year for “silencing the guns”.

She said that was supposed to be the deadline for achieving the end to violent conflicts, prevention of genocide, gender-based violence, civil wars, and all other wars in the region.

She said Africans were increasingly losing faith in democracy and democratic governance as a means of guaranteeing improvement in the human condition on the continent.

According to her, this is evidently reflected in the general jubilations that has greeted the recent waves of coups in some countries in Africa, especially the West African region.

“To state that Africans’ democratic journey has been marred by conflict and insecurity is to say the least, it is important to interrogate the future of democracy within the African region,” she said.

Prof. Kayode Adebowale, Vice Chancellor, University of Ibadan (UI), represented by Dr Seunfunmi Olutayo, Director, Institute of African Studies, UI, said,  “Let us remember that Sub-Saharan Africa is not just a region of challenges; it is a region of boundless potential.

“By understanding the role of culture, addressing security concerns and nurturing democracy, we can work toward a future where the people of Sub-Saharan Africa enjoy peace, prosperity, and the full realisation of their democratic aspirations.” (NAN) (nannews.ng)

  • Court acquits Chinese directors of alleged forgery

Court acquits Chinese directors of alleged forgery

Abuja: A Federal High Court, Abuja has discharged and acquitted two Chinese; Hao Aijun and Liu Yangxi, and a Nigerian, Obi Anthony-Chibuzor, who were charged with conspiracy, forgery and fraud.

Justice Nnamdi Dimgba, in a judgment, upheld the arguments of the lawyer to Hao and Liu , Akinlolu Kehinde, SAN, and counsel to Chibuzor, Anozie Obi, that the prosecution, represented by M. O. Omosun, failed to prove its case.

According to Justice Dimgba, from the totality of the evidence given in this case, most especially the testimony of the 1st prosecution witness (PW1), PW2 and PW5, none of their testimony has been able to link the defendants with any act of forgery.

The News Agency iof Nigeria (NAN) reports that the defendants, who were directors of BN Ceramics Industry Nigeria Limited, were accused among others, of forging the company’s board’s resolutions.

A 13-count charge marked: FHC/ABJ/CR/77/2017 was preferred against them by the Inspector-General (I-G) of Police.

At their arraignment, they pleaded not quilty, following which the trial was conducted and the defendants made a no-case submission, which was partially upheld by Justice Dimgba.
The development led to the striking out of eight out of the 13 counts.

The defendants subsequently entered defence in relation to the remaining five counts.
Delivering the judgment, Justice Dimgba discharged and acquitted them on the five counts.
Justice Dimgba upheld the arguments of counsel for the defendants that the prosecution failed to prove its case.

“Even the testimony of the handwriting experts and the reports of their findings, as manifested in Exhibits HA4, HA5, HA11 and HA13, did not link the defendants to the document, the signature of the PW1 said to have been forged,” he said.

The judge added that the prosecution failed to call necessary witnesses, who would have supplied vital evidence.

“Consequent on the above, I hereby find the defendants not guilty of the charges preferred against them.

“I hold that the prosecution has failed to prove the offence of conspiracy against the defendants by the standard required by law, which is beyond reasonable doubt,” he declared.

NAN reports that the police had filed the charge upon a complaint by one of BN Ceramics’ directors, Zhang Xing, following a boardroom disagreement.

In an earlier judgment, Justice Donatus Okorowo of FHC stuck out the civil suit, marked: FHC/ABJ/CS/606/2016 filed against other directors of BN Ceramics by Xing.

Listed as defendants in the suit were: BN Ceramics, Hao, Chen Enlai, Liu Yangxi, Zhang Qide and the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC).

Justice Okorowo held that the suit was incompetent and that the court lacked jurisdiction to hear it, the plaintiff having failed to comply with the condition precedent to initiating such an action.(NAN)(www.nannews.ng)/ Flowerbudnews
