NGOs task youths on taking advantage of climate change mitigation opportunities

    By Flowerbudnews

Enugu:  The South Saharan Social Development Organisation (SSDO) and ActionAid Nigeria, on Saturday, tasked rural youths to take advantage of climate change mitigation opportunities around them to create a better and safer world.

The two Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) have taken its climate change mitigation sensitization to youths in rural areas in four council areas, which included: Enugu South, Aninri, Isi-Uzo and Igbo-Eze South council areas in Enugu State.

Addressing youths of Oduma community in Aninri council area during a sensitization session, the SSDO’s Programme Manager for Strategic Partnership Agreement (SPA) II, Mr Udochukwu Egwim, noted there are numerous socio-economic opportunities opened to youths that get committed to climate change mitigation.

Egwim said that the sensitization, which was themed: “Strengthening Capacity of Youths to Understand and Contextualise Climate Change”, had exposed youths to learn about harnessing the power of the sun through solar technologies and waste-to-wealth approaches of waste recycling and reuse.

He said: “We have also exposed them to learning and fixing solar dryers (meant for agricultural crop preservation), and this will be highly beneficial to them as youths that engage in extensive agricultural businesses.

“We have stressed on the need to collect plastic/nylon waste for recycling or better still use it to mix cement to make better durable interlocking bricks.

“Our bio-degradable materials can be gathered together to make compost (or manure for our farmers) and engage in teaching the older generation and children climate smart agriculture; and need to protect and plant more trees, preferable economic trees.”

According to him, there is a need for youths to champion the efforts of climate change mitigation since they will soon take over from the elderly and become leaders in the future.

“It is good that they (youths) started today to create a beneficial and climate friendly environment meant to create a lasting sustainable environment that will take good care of them and generations to come,” he said.

Egwim, however, warned against indiscriminate cutting of trees without plans to replace them multiple folds; need to stop cooking with wood and excessive use of vehicles that releases carbon-monoxide where option of trekking to close distance exist.

One of the participants, Mr David Mbah, said that he had learnt of the severe consequences of not paying attention to climate change issues since in the near future alter the biodiversity of Oduma community and that of Enugu State.

Mbah, who was trained during a Climate Change Boot Camp in Abuja, said that he was already mobilising to step-down all he had learnt to ensure residents of the agrarian community and Aninri council area preserve the environment and maintain good eco-balance.

Another participant, Mr Uche Ani, said that the sensitization had exposed him to other ventures that he could engage in during the off-farming season period that would be beneficial to him and his immediate environment.

Over 30 youths attended the three-hour sensitisation that featured lectures from various climate and environmental experts and advocates. Flowerbudnews)

At the launch event for the eActros and eEconic trucks, Mr. Harald Schmid, CEO of Daimler Bus and Mercedes-Benz Special Truck, South East Asia, together with Mr. Wilson Lam, Director of Commercial Vehicles, Zung Fu Hong Kong, witnessed the grand debut of these two Mercedes-Benz all-electric trucks.

With the introduction of the eActros and eEconic in Hong Kong, local businesses can now acquire large-scale environmentally friendly transport vehicles that offer enhanced performance, aligning with their growing emphasis on sustainable development strategies (ESG).
The all-electric eActros and eEconic, now showcased at the Mercedes-Benz Truck and Bus Service Center, are poised to provide a wider range of all-electric and eco-friendly options for the local trucking industry. Upholding Mercedes-Benz’s consistent philosophy of delivering reliable, high-quality, and comfortable driving experiences, these two all-electric trucks are available for order and are expected to be delivered and put into service in the second quarter of 2024.

The First All-Electric Mercedes-Benz Truck, the eActros
As the flagship series of Mercedes-Benz trucks, the Actros has long been the preferred choice for numerous commercial vehicle users. In pursuit of the ultimate environmental goal of “carbon-neutral transportation,” Mercedes-Benz has officially launched the all-electric eActros.

The eActros 400 is equipped with a large lithium-ion battery pack with a total capacity of 448 kWh, providing a range of up to 400 km*.

With a powerful dual-motor system delivering a total output of 400 kW (544hp), the eActros exhibits superior performance compared to its diesel-engine counterparts.

When choosing all-electric trucks in the transportation industry, several decisive factors come into play, including range, power output, fast charging capability, adaptability for daily use, and application flexibility. Additionally, low noise levels and the ability to drive with zero CO2 emissions are also crucial considerations.

The introduction of the eActros addresses these key factors, providing the most practical solutions and offering robust support to the transportation industry in its pursuit of sustainability and carbon neutrality.
To complement the electric powertrain, the eActros is equipped with a truly responsive 2-speed transmission, simplifying the driving and operation processes, reducing stress for drivers, and ultimately enhancing work efficiency.

Mercedes-Benz has also incorporated several acclaimed electric vehicle core technologies and safety features into the standard specifications of the eActros, including the Multimedia Cockpit Interactive, AVAS (Acoustic Vehicle Alerting System), Lane Keep Assist, and fifth-generation Active Brake Assist emergency braking system, MirrorCam rearview mirror system (optional), among others.

The Most Environmentally Friendly Low-Floor Urban Truck, the eEconic
Belonging to Mercedes-Benz’s special-purpose truck series, the eEconic is the second all-electric heavy-duty truck under the Mercedes-Benz brand, based on the chassis and powertrain system of the eActros. Benefitting from electric power propulsion, the eEconic offers higher efficiency in energy recuperation during braking compared to conventional diesel-powered trucks, making it particularly suitable for environments that require frequent starts and stop (such as refuse collection vehicles).

With zero exhaust emissions and exceptionally quiet operation, the eEconic is especially well-suited for nighttime operations and areas with strict restrictions on exhaust emissions. The high-performance lithium-ion battery can seamlessly integrate with a 160 kW charging system, recharging up to 20%-80% of its capacity in approximately 75 minutes, making it perfect for urban applications that require multiple stops along the route.

eEconic sets itself apart with the utilization of Econic series’ DirectVision low-floor cabin, significantly reducing physical demands for onboard personnel and enhancing overall driving safety and occupational health effectiveness.

  • Surveyors advocate remapping, testing to prevent flooding, building collapse

Surveyors advocate remapping, testing to prevent flooding, building collapse

    By Grace Alegba

Lagos:   The Nigerian Institution of Surveyors (NIS) has called for creation of a ministry for testing buildings in Lagos State and annual updating of map to curb building collapse and flooding in the state.

NIS Lagos Branch made the call during its 2023 Mandatory Continuing Professional Development (MCPD) workshop with the theme: “Comparative Analysis of Building Information Model For Structural Health Monitoring,” on Thursday in Lagos.

The society also advised Nigerians to engage professional surveyors for documentations towards getting genuine Certificate of Occupancy (C of O) to prevent loss of investments through collapse, flooding or forfeiture.

Chairman, NIS, Lagos Branch, Mr Olukolade Kasim, said the workshop was organised to train and retrain members for best standards to curb the menace of building collapse and flooding.

(L-R: Mr Femi Fatoki, member, Lagos Branch, Nigerian Institution of Surveyors (NIS); Mr Adedeji Sebiotimo chairman, 2023 workshop planning committee; guest speakers, and others at the association’s 2023 Mandatory Continuing Professional Development (MCPD) workshop on Thursday in Lagos)

According to Kasim, the NIS usually collaborates with all the other six built environment experts including architects, engineers, builders, town planners, amongst others towards construction of solid structures.

He called for regular monitoring of infrastructure towards determining thier structural health and stability using modern tools like scanners to prevent faults that may develop underneath the earth crust.

He said regular monitoring of bridges and tall buildings was important, urging the Lagos State government to create a ministry attached to the Surveyor General’s office for the purpose of monitoring and testing buildings.

He explained that highrise buildings constructed with best globally accepted procedures and standards could become sick as a result of movement underneath the earth, hence the need for periodic tests.

He cited the example of a bridge at Bonny Camp area in Lagos which was noticed to have one of its pillars shifting before the government fixed the problem to avert collapse.

“We are recommending that bridges and tall ranking buildings should be monitored periodically,” he said.

Mr Adedeji Sebiotimo, chairman of the 2023 workshop planning committee, called for annual updating of the Lagos map for proper planning to capture new settlements.

Sebiotimo, a fellow of NIS and Vice Chairman of the Lagos State Branch, said updated mapping would reveal accurate topography of land either high or low as a determinant of what and where to build without the risks of flooding or collapse.

“And from the mapping results we will be able to know areas that have infrastructure or those lacking infrastructure in terms of roads or developments, a lot of things can be seen from the map,” he said.

He said in 2022, 320 surveyors registered for the workshop, but that 495 registered for the 2023 programme, aimed at exposing surveyors to current trends to reshape their knowledge and skills.

The guest speaker, Dr Joseph Odumosu, explained common errors made by civil engineers and other built environment professionals in trying to hijack the roles of surveyors.

He advised surveyors not to certify projects that they did not supervise to avoid being liable for unethical practices and failure of the structures.

Odumosu, a lecturer at Federal University, Oye-Ekiti, said scanners should be used for proper imagery of highrise as well as to determine the health of the buildings using new technologies.

The second guest speaker, Mr Awofeko Abiodun, said all states in Nigeria had GIS departments, which aims to strengthen Land Information System and Land Administration Systems, but he said publicity was needed for the public to harness opportunities.

The event had the sub theme: “Application of BIM in Strata Survey: Methodology and Presentation.” (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)/ Flowerbudnews

  • Kashmiris Worldwide Marks Kashmir Black Day to Press Demand for self -Determination

Kashmiris Worldwide Marks Kashmir Black Day to Press Demand for self -Determination

    By Danladi Ahmed

Abuja (Flowerbudnews): Kashmiris around the world are today, October 27, marking Kashmir Black Day in remembrance of the exact day in history, when Indian troops landed in their land.

Kashmir Black Day is an annual commemoration by Kashmiris across the world
to mark October 27 as ‘Black Day’.

Kashmiris around the world are demanding that International community, including
United Nations and it’s relevant Human Rights Machinery, Civil Society organizations, Media Houses and other defenders of Human Rights to fulfill their obligations towards besieged Kashmiris by playing their part to end the Indian rule of tyranny and oppression.

A document on the situation Kashmir made available to Flowerbudnews on Thursday in Abuja stated:

”Every year, the day is marked to express solidarity and support with Kashmiri people in their struggle for right to self-determination.

On 27 October 1947, invading troops of India landed in Srinagar on the premise of
an Instrument of Accession purported to have been signed by the then ruler Hari
Singh of the princely state of Kashmir a day earlier after virtually losing authority in the
face of a popular public uprising against the autocracy.

Informed sources on the situation Kashmir said that ”India has been severely violating
human rights in Jammu and Kashmir since last 76 years.’

UN Resolutions 47 of 21 April 1948, 51 of 3 June 1948, 80 of 14 March 1950 and 91 of 30 March 1951 and the UN Commission for India and Pakistan resolutions of 13 August 1948 and 5 January 1949 all indicate that the final disposition of the State of Jammu and Kashmir will be made in accordance with the will of the people expressed through the democratic method of a free and impartial plebiscite conducted under the auspices of the United Nations.

”Numerous international, UN organizations as well as UN Special Rapporteurs to Indian Government have since reported gross violations of human rights in Indian Occupied Jammu and Kashmir.

On 5 August 2019, the Government of India revoked the special status of Jammu
and Kashmir by illegally and unilaterally abrogating Article 370 and 35A of the Indian
Constitution thus dropping all pretense of acceding to a referendum.

”India’s proclamation has never been accepted by the UN, which still continues to list Kashmir
as disputed territory and subject to the Security Council’s self-determination resolutions.

The state of press freedom in Jammu and Kashmir has also been a matter of
concern for several years now. Since India revoked the region’s special status in 2019,
the situation has deteriorated significantly and journalists in Jammu and Kashmir are
    facing intimidation and fear.

The spate of detentions and arrests of journalists in Jammu & Kashmir reveals the distressing pattern of the use of law to target innocent civilians as well as journalists. Kashmiris around the world have always called upon international community to take practical steps in order to stop gross human rights violations and facilitate a peaceful resolution of Kashmir issue as per UN Resolutions and aspirations of Kashmiri people.

Indian security forces in Jammu and Kashmir have also been using pallet guns to
control protests and masses seeking freedom injuring hundreds and killing atleast 112
    people followed by international outcry.

In 2020, Human Rights Watch (HRW) reported
that Indian Forces are ‘maiming, blinding and killing people’ in Kashmir as they continue
to defy international norms by using pellet guns..

In October 1992, representatives from Asia Watch and Physicians for Human Rights (PHR) travelled to Kashmir to document rape and other human rights abuses and violations of the laws of war by Indian security forces.

Rape is used as a means of targeting women to punish and humiliate the entire community. It was reported that Indian forces committed raped 882 Kashmiri women in 1992 alone.

The Humanitarian Law Project/International Educational Development documented more
than 200 cases of war rape from January 1994. Many cases are not reported because
of the shame and stigma associated with rape in Kashmir. Similarly thousands of cases
of killings of innocent civilians have been reported in Kashmir.

The International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, which India is bound to uphold, is explicit in stipulating that torture and arbitrary killings can never be justified. Amnesty International also reported this in their report ASA 20/17/93 on April 1993.

With deployment of approximately 900000 Indian Security Personnel, Jammu and Kashmir has been converted into world’s most militarized zone and the largest prison on earth.

Kashmiris around the world demand that International community including United Nations and it’s relevant Human Rights Machinery, Civil Society Organizations, Media Houses and other defenders of Human Rights to fulfill their obligations towards besieged Kashmiris by playing their part to end the Indian rule of tyranny and oppression.

Kashmir Black Day is an annual commemoration by Kashmiris across the world
to mark October 27 as ‘Black Day’.

On 27 October 1947, invading Indian troops landed in Srinagar, Kashmir to
    embark upon an illegal occupation.

Since last 76 years, India has committed gross human rights violations which
have been globally reported by UN commissions as well as international media.

Resolution 47 (1948) adopted by the Security Council at its 286th meeting on 21
April 1948 asks restoration of peace and order and the plebiscite in the State of
    Jammu and Kashmir.

On 5 August 2019, the Government of India revoked the special status of Jammu
and Kashmir by illegally and unilaterally abrogating Article 370 and 35A of
    the Indian Constitution.

Since then, the situation has deteriorated significantly and journalists in Jammu
and Kashmir are also facing intimidation and fear. With deployment of approximately 900000 Indian Security Personnel, Jammu and Kashmir has been converted into world’s most militarized zone and the largest prison on earth. (Flowerbudnews)

  • Drug war: NDLEA to deploy personnel to 774 LGAs in 2024 – Marwa

Drug war: NDLEA to deploy personnel to 774 LGAs in 2024 – Marwa

    By Ibironke Ariyo

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) says it will deploy personnel to 774 Local Government Areas in 2024 to strengthen the war against substance abuse and illicit drug trafficking especially in local communities.

This is contained in a statement issued by the Director, Media and Advocacy, NDLEA, Mr Femi Babafemi on Friday in Abuja.

The NDLEA Chairman, Brig.-Gen. Buba Marwa (Rtd), said this while responding to request for partnership and deployment of more NDLEA officers in all parts of Katsina by Gov. Dikko Radda.

Marwa stated that the request was based on taming the problem of drug abuse and insecurity in the state.

Marwa said “with the agency’s staff strength expected to rise to 15,000 by the end of the year, the next “development is to deploy in the LGAs.

“We currently have zonal commands, state commands, and area commands. We want to go to the LGAs for the offensive action and the advocacy work.

“We would need more support to succeed. I appreciate the work of the Katsina governor as the challenges are numerous in governing the state.

“But if insecurity is a problem and is fueled by drugs, I believe we have to collectively take it out of the security equation,’’ he said.

Marwa commended Gov. Radda for his efforts to surmount the various challenges faced and enhance the socio-economic development of the state.

He appealed to the Katsina Government to have a state drug control committee of which the NDLEA would be the secretary and the chairperson would be the First Lady of the state.

He said that the first ladies were in the strategic position, because they were the mothers and have the best interest of the government at heart.

Speaking earlier, Gov. Radda said he was at the agency as part of his government’s efforts to solve the problem of insecurity facing the state.

Radda said that it was no longer news that the problem of insecurity had been ongoing for years and insecurity was one of the major issues confronting Katsina state.

According to him, we receive unpleasant news almost on a daily basis on what has been the issues disturbing the state for a long time.

“We have taken some needful steps, we set up a Katsina community watch corps with locals to complement the efforts of the conventional security agencies but that is not enough.

“We decided to reach out to the NDLEA under the leadership of the chairman to combine our efforts and synergise to mitigate the effect of insecurity in the state.

“It was necessary to get to the root of the problem, and the root of the problem is drug abuse by the teeming youths in the state.

“We know that these inhumane acts cannot be committed without the influence of drugs,” he said.

Radda said that he hoped the partnership would go a long way in alleviating the issues of the state and improving the economy.

“Once insecurity is reduced, economic activities will be conducted better,” he said.
