We’ll revoke licenses of underperforming DisCos, GenCos in Nigeria – Adelabu

The Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, says the Federal Government will not renew licensing agreements for under-performing electricity distribution and generation companies in Nigeria.

Adelabu disclosed this on Monday at the opening ceremony of the three-day inaugural Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry, NESI, Market Participants and Stakeholders Roundtable, NMPSR, in Abuja.

He lamented that 10 years after the privatisation of the power sector in November 2013, operators have failed to achieve its set out objectives.

He insisted that for operators that have not met expectations, their licenses will be revoked.

He said, “I mentioned that ten years later, the licences are expiring, and it’s time for renewal. Renewal is not automatic. Any privatised companies that have not lived up to expectations will not have their licence renewed. We have to know whether you have complied with the terms and conditions of the licence you have been given.

“I mentioned in my speech that most countries do not privatise their electricity supply value chain from generation to transmission to distribution. But bad enough, we have done this; how can we work around the current status to achieve our priorities and objectives.

And I said it’s not a job for one person or a set of stakeholders. It’s a job for everybody. We all have a role to play.

“We must all come together and play our roles so that we come out strong and achieve success in the industry.

“We’ll look at the technical capacities of the GenCos and the DisCos. We will look at the financial capabilities of the DisCos. How much investment have you made since you got this licence? How much improvement have you made to the infrastructure? Which AT&C losses have you reduced based on the agreement when you were given the licence? These are the very serious conversations we need to have with the private sector operators at the distribution and the generating companies level.”

recalls that in November 2013, the power sector was privatised, with six power generation plants and 11 electricity distribution companies

    By Salisu Sani-Idris

President Bola Tinubu on Monday warned government officials and family members against attending the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting without invitation.

Tinubu issued the warning before the commencement of FEC meeting at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

“Last week, I noticed people sneaking in and out of this council. People had access to this place when they should not. That is not acceptable.

“I will announce to you here, people who are supposed to be here.

“Hadiza Usman, Special Adviser on Policy Coordination, Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Hakeem Muri-Okunola, Principal Private Secretary and Damilotun Aderemi, Private Secretary.

The president directed the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, and the Head of Civil Service of the Federation (HCSF), Folashade Yemi-Esan, to take note of his directive.

“Unless they are your staff that are included, no one should have access to the FEC meeting, except I have announced their names to you.

Tinubu, however, expressed absolute confidence in the integrity of his Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila

“There are a lot of stories going around about what is happening. I’ve told everyone in this country that I can make mistakes.

“I have had to hear them out and correct them. Perfection is that of God Almighty. I have absolute confidence in the integrity of my Chief of Staff.

“All the campaign of calumny and insinuation should stop.”

  • Katsina: Relieving pains of insecurity via community-driven approach

Katsina: Relieving pains of insecurity via community-driven approach

By Zubairu Idris, News Agency of Nigeria (NAN)

Katsina:  In what looked like a scene from an action movie, under the cover of darkness, gunmen stormed Government Boys Science Secondary School in Kankara Local Government Area of Katsina State in December 2020.

Before security agencies would respond to distress calls, the bandits had whisked away no fewer than 300 of the students from their hostel. They spent one week in captivity.

Earlier this month, gunmen kidnapped five students of Federal University, Dutsin-Ma. Their captors are still demanding ransom as at the time of filing this report.

The above scenarios reflect the security challenge Kastina State has faced in recent years. In addition to abductions, there is also the challenge banditry, cattle rustling, and armed robbery, among others.

This has continued to raise concern not only among the residents of affected communities, but also to the government and other stakeholders.

The consequences of the problem on the socio-economic lives of the people in the 34 Local Government Areas of the state have been enormous, ranging from poverty, hunger, school drop-out, among others.

For instance, some farmers have abandoned farming activities. The implications of this need not be explained.

The most affected Local Governments Areas are: Batsari, Danmusa, Jibiya, Kankara, Safana, Faskari, Sabuwa and Dandume.

In these areas, many of the residents have migrated to where they consider safe even when such areas lack basic amenities. The vulnerable—widows the poor, widows, orphans, children and the aged being the worst hit.

Some residents of such communities have lamented that bandits move freely with weapons in their areas, adding that sometimes they enter markets to extort the residents.

“Sometimes they kidnap young women who are unable to migrate and rape some of them.

“In some places, they also impose taxes on the residents before allowing them to cultivate crops,” residents who pleaded for anonymity told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

Another resident, who gave his name as Mallam Abdullahi, said: “sometimes, residents sleep on roof tops. Sometimes we sleep in the bush and return in the morning in our bid to escape from terrorists attack.

“As I am speaking with you, the only people left in our area are widows, children, the aged and the physically challenged persons as all able-bodied men have fled the community.

To change this narrative, Gov. Dikko Radda, said during his inauguration on May 29, 2023, that the task of his administration would be “providing peace and prosperity for the people”.

“The insecurity issue will be paramount for this administration, and we will deploy all available resources to end banditry and criminality across the state.

“We will also engage communities in this fight to ensure that security is sustained.

“To those affected by banditry and other forms of insecurity, I assure you that my administration will do its best to rebuild your lives.

“We will also focus on your mental well-being and provide special support to women and girls who have endured unimaginable pain,” the governor said.

As demonstration of vow Radda, on Oct. 10, 2023, inaugurated Katsina Community Security Watch Corps (KCSWC), to complement security agencies in the ongoing fight against the menace.

Radda recalled that during his electioneering campaign, he traversed the 361 wards in the state and witnessed the devastating effects of insecurity on several communities.

“People have been denigrated to poor living conditions, immense psychological trauma, and a complete demolition of socio-economic development,” he said

He said in line with his campaign promises security has been the topmost priority of his administration and has invested vast resources to ensure sustainability in the fight against the criminality.

“This should come as no surprise to anyone as 22 out of 34 local governments in Katsina face severe security challenges,” he said.

Radda, therefore, said the introduction of the Community Watch Corps (KCSWC) illustrated his administration’s proactive approach to those security challenges.

“By leveraging localised knowledge and fostering trust, we are not merely addressing symptoms, but targeting the roots of insecurity in our state.

“To our dear officers, as you step out into the field, remember that you now bear a significant responsibility.

“You are not just protectors but also role models, mediators, and pillars of support. Remember, the real essence of your training goes beyond physical readiness or tactical expertise.

“It is about the development of a character that understands the value of empathy, community cohesion, and cultural respect“, he said.

He urged members of the team to be guided by the core valued behind establishment of their team.

“You have been saddled with the responsibility of facing a deadly enemy who has no respect for life or peaceful existence.

“These bandits have brought pain upon our mothers, daughters, sons, and fathers, and it is our religious obligation to protect them,” Radda said.

He promised to fully support all the security agencies, the security watch corps, vigilant groups, amongst others to enable them would work together to eradicate insecurity.

The State’s Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Dr Nasiru Muazu-Danmusa, said the government would not negotiate with any criminal, but would do everything humanly possible to protect the people.

“I think Katsina has highest number of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in the North-west zone as a result of that insecurity.

“However, we are making efforts to reverse the narration by putting in place excellent strategies that will address the problem,” he said.

Muazu-Danmusa said the government has benchmarked salaries of the KCSWCs on the basis of the national minimum wage to boost their morale for effective service delivery.

He further said the government was constructing offices for the corps, has provided them with patrol vehicles, motorcycles, weapons, gadgets, among others for their effective operations.

“So, we are going in tandem with the provision of the constitution in providing them with all these things,” he said.

He said that the corps was made up of indigenes of their host communities who have been in forefront in the fight against the terrorists therefore are familiar with the terrain.

The Commissioner of Police the Police Command in Katsina State, Mr Aliyu Abubakar-Musa, said recently the Command recorded successes in fighting banditry, kidnapping, armed robbery and other criminal activities in the state.

“Notwithstanding the modest achievements, more still need to be done”, he said.

Abubakar-Musa said 1, 005 suspects were arrested in connection with 853 reported criminal cases in June, 2023, alone.

He also said the command has rescued 171 kidnap victims and neutralised five suspected kidnappers during the period under review.

The CP added that the police recovered 600 suspected rustled animals, four AK 47 rifles, six locally made guns and 517 live rounds of ammunition, among other achievements.

To ensure sustainability of the new approach, the governor also inaugurated “Security Intervention Trust Fund Committee” that would secure funds to be used in addressing those security challenges bedeviling the state.

Radda said the committee would identify prominent state indigenes and corperate organisations to solicit funds required for that purpose.

He said the committee would suggest areas where the funds would be utilised, and propose modest projects to be executed with the funds raised.

Such projects, he said, would be support the security measures in such areas as rehabilitation of victims and job creation for young persons.

Mr Aliyu Abdulkarim, a resident, advised the government to provide the corps with modern weapons and ensure that they worked in synergy with other security agencies.

He further advised the government to do everything possible to boost morale of the KCSWC personnel.

Abdulkarim also advised the neighboring states to work in synergy with Katsina by sharing intelligence, operation and resources to rid the entire zone of the unfortunate security situation.

It is expected that if the community-based approach works the people of the state would sleep with their eyes closed, while socio-economic activities would flourish more than before. (NANFeatures) www.nannews.ng / Flowerbudnews

  • Botswana – A Pride of Africa

    BOTSWANA EXEMPLARY LEADERSHIP….
In Botswana, UNIVERSITY students get paid $154 monthly to go to school. Botswana’s citizens get FREE land if they apply when they are above 18.

The country is so safe that even the President can walk around without SECURITY. All Citizens receive FREE healthcare. Botswana gives Grants to OLD people and PHYSICALLY challenged people.

In 2017, Botswana’s Parliament approved a law to provide FREE sanitary pads for girls in all schools to improve access to EDUCATION. They are Visa free to a lot of countries including UK but you’ll rarely see any of them traveling to UK.

What are you going to do in another country when your country provides the basic things. I used to think it’s the normal black man mentality for all Africans, but looking at this, it means we’re not born bad as Africans, it’s some of our LEADERS and POLITICAL decisions that’s bad. Because look at Botswana.. They just proved me wrong .

Very true. That country is the Switzerland of Africa. Very good. There is no power outage. 24/7 electricity on. Even children in primary and secondary school eat free food twice a day.

They will even take plenty home because it’s too much, some of their parents and families will eat out of it. From Creche/Nursery School,to Secondary school, once you have your Omang (Citizenship number) you go to shop to collect school uniform, shoes, socks, school bags free of charge for your children at government expense.

Textbooks, notebooks and pencils, and birds are given free in the schools. They even print others subjects, Maths, sciences, Geography etc in their language, *Sestwana*

Under five children, to encourage parents bring them for monthly check up, they have clinics like 20 to 25mins walk from people’s home and you get oil( ororo), peanut butter, sugar, flour and Sorghum meal( 5kg) fortified with vitamins and nutrients to feed the babies, babies can’t even finish it before the next visit so families already have their breakfast porridge most times.

These universities students live free in very nice air-conditioned/heater hostels in the University, with free WiFi, and water and electricity always 24/7 all at the expense of the government
Some parents infact most in Botswana have never spend a dime on their children’s education and some have 5/6/7 children who are graduates.

Some parents will even be waiting for their children to come share out of their monthly pay with them.

The most painful aspect of it is that they don’t even have half of the money that the poorest state in Nigeria has. Very good management of resources and very low tolerance or acceptance to corruption.

Anytime the president is to visit somewhere, he goes with food, free food for all on that day. And they always keep their people informed and knowledgeable of so many things and latest awareness.

Even to the most remote villages they take their different policies and workshop trainings there and provide social amenities for them.

They send these children abroad for Masters, Phds, they will always come back home after graduation because before they arrived jobs and accommodation are already waiting for them. No matter the country their children will say they are coming back if asked about staying behind abroad.

Developed countries respect them alot o. Infact they enjoy a lot of scholarship from UK, Canada, USA and Australia.

Their borders are very tight and strict, and Visa very difficult to get. Come and see the way they deport white people from their countries.. . .. they fear them o, and they know their rights.

Once they see you have a good job, banks will be running after you to give to loan to build house, run business, infact they were begging a lady to help her openshop run it, just for the place to be in her name.

And they encourage their children being around home together and not far from the country so they can build their countries together.

They once sacked a minister because he used official car to go pick his child from school. No family member, not even your wife is to be seen in an official car given to you.

Ministers children and parliament members children all school with everybody. The president will bring his child to the hospital himself, there was a time that my husband was the one that attended to them and he will even be nice and chatting with those on duty.

It’s a very good country. If Nigeria can emulate 20% of their administration and discipline we shall be better off (Flowerbudnews)

IMPEACHMENT PLOT UNCOVERED IN RIVERS STATE .

    By Flowerbud News

    Oct. 30, 2023

An alleged impeachment move to remove H.E Sir Siminalayi FUBARA GSSR, the executive governor of Rivers State is brewing just over 100 days of his mounting the saddle.

Signatures of the State House Of Assembly members are being collected to enable the impeachment of the governor

Meanwhile, some members are demanding lump sums i to stop the impeachment

The Governor has asked his Chief of staff to go for an early shower

Though no reason has been given for the impeachment moves, souces say it may not be unconnected with the Minister of the FCT- Ezenwo Nyesom Wike in his quest for perpetual control of the state affairs where he once held sway as Governor.

You will recall the duo had enjoyed very robust relationship before and after the elections – even in recent times-flagging off a key project- the Port harcourt dual carriage- way ring road.

The progressive and calm atmosphere brought about by Simnalayi FUBURA in more than 100days may again be heated up should the impeachment plot go unchecked.

Political Analysts say the Rivers People must stand up to it and call off this emperor- like status of past Governors no matter their input at a time and allow seamless governance take its course.
Wike had earlier promised not to usurp governance of the state during a church service in his honour.

Calls to the newly appointed Commissioner of information, Senibo Joe Johnson to further shed light proved abortive and calls to Wike never sailed through.

69 arrested for violating environmental law in Nasarawa

    By Oboh Linus

No fewer than 69 people were arrested for allegedly violating environmental law during this month’s sanitation exercise in Nasarawa State.

Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Mr Yakubu Kwanta, made the disclosure while speaking with newsmen during the exercise in Lafia.

Kwanta said that those arrested were majorly motorists as well as tricycle and motorcycle riders, saying that they cut across all local government areas of the state.

He said that the state had adopted a new strategy to ensure effective monitoring of the exercise by constituting a special inspection team.

The commissioner said that members of the team, who were usually in mufti, would observe the sanitation teams sent to various places to monitor the exercise.

Kwanta, who was represented by the Chief Environmental Officer of the ministry, Abubakar Mohammed, said that the special inspection team had become necessary to fish out those who might be sabotaging the exercise.

He warned the various sanitation teams against sabotaging the efforts of the state government to keep the state clean, adding that anybody found culpable of insubordination would be dealt with in according with the civil service rule.

Kwanta, however, said that the exercise recorded 80 per cent compliance in the state.

“We have sent a special inspection team to various places to observe the activities of the sanitation teams, and they will just appear like ordinary people to monitor their activities and bring feedback.

“That is the strategy we have adopted this time around, and from all indications, there’s a great improvement in Lafia. I can assure you that we have 80 per cent compliance,” he said.
