I won’t challenge election result at tribunal — Dino Melaye

The Kogi State governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Senator Dino Melaye, said he will not challenge the electoral victory of the All Progressives Congress before the state election petition tribunal.

The PUNCH reports that the Independent National Electoral Commission declared the APC candidate, Usman Ododo, winner of the November 11 governorship election in the state.

The PDP governorship candidate, who came in third in the election, on Wednesday alleged that the judiciary is no longer independent but a department of the APC.

Dino stated, “Judiciary is no longer the last hope of the ordinary people, it is now a department under the All Progressives Congress. Why should any responsible person go to the tribunal when the APC have captured the judiciary?

“I have lost complete confidence in the judiciary.”

Appeal Court sacks Kaduna Speaker, orders rerun in 5 polling units

The Court of Appeal sitting in Abuja has sacked the Speaker of the Kaduna State House of Assembly, Hon. Yusuf Dahiru Liman of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Liman was a member representing Makera Constituency in Kaduna South Local Government Area.

The Court also ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to withdraw the certificate of Return given to the speaker and conduct fresh elections in 5 polling units.

Hon. Solomon Katuka of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) had filed a petition before the tribunal challenging the election of the Speaker, Hon. Yusuf Dahiru Liman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) representing Makera Constituency in the Kaduna State House of Assembly.

Katuka said that there were gross irregularities regarding the election of the Speaker and insisted that he won the election.

The Tribunal had in September, nullified the election of the Speaker and ordered a rerun in 42 polling units in 5 Wards.

However; the Speaker, the APC and INEC appealed against the judgment of the tribunal and Solomon Katuka of the PDP filed a cross-appeal seeking an outright declaration.

The three-member panel led by Justice I. O Adejumo, Justice A. O Oyetula, and Justice P. A Obiora in a unanimous decision quashed the decision of the tribunal ordering a rerun in 42 polling units.

The Appeal Court granted the prayers of the PDP candidate, Hon. Solomon Katuka, and ordered a rerun in 5 polling units in the constituency

  • Edo deputy Gov, Shaibu formally declares interest in 2024 governorship

Edo deputy Gov, Shaibu formally declares interest in 2024 governorship

The Edo State Deputy Governor, Comrade Philip Shaibu, on Monday formally declared his intention to contest the 2024 Edo governorship election under the banner of Peoples’ Democratic (PDP).

Shaibu, in the early morning declaration, alluded to his political travails in the last couple of months, especially, and declared that he remained unbowed even as he forged ahead against the unfavourable disposition of his principal, Governor Godwin Obaseki.

The declaration event which was earlier scheduled to take place at Eterno Hotels, GRA, Benin, was shifted late Sunday night when information flittered in that one of the Governor Obaseki’s support groups, “Obaseki ending well”, also scheduled an event at the same venue for 7.30 pm on Monday. The development forced Shaibu to look for an alternative venue and he chose the sacred ground of a Catholic church in Benin City, the state capital.

Addressing his supporters at the Bishop Kelly Pastoral Central, the new venue the deputy governor secured, Shaibu said that despite his present predicament, his antecedents in the struggle for democracy were parts of the propelling factors for him to move on to actualize his ambition.

Describing himself as “100 percent Home Boy”, an allusion to the clamour that the next governor of the state must be someone who knows the state very well, and not someone imported, a veiled reference to the touted candidate of Governor Obaseki, Shaibu hinged his campaign on five pillars that include: infrastructural development, economic diversification, Education, Sports.

Others are Skills development and job creation, healthcare, social welfare system, agriculture, rural development, poverty alleviation, environmental sustainability, and transparent governance.

He said while working closely with Governor Godwin Obaseki in the past seven years, a solid foundation for progress had been laid in the state.

“Under our administration, we have seen remarkable achievements and milestones, but there is still much work to be done. I am aware of the need by the greater Edo people for a more inclusive government, a government of the Edo people, by the Edo people, and for the Edo people.

He reiterated that his administration would be “A government of individuals who have been there and know the pains and wishes of an average Edolite”

Shaibu maintained that under his supervision, the state Internally Generated Revenue (IGR), grew impressively, which he attributed to the introduction of digital and cutting-edge ideas.

“Back in the day, you didn’t just call me “Mr Constituency Project” for nothing. In my time as a legislator, I delivered 49 constituency projects at the state level and 13 solid constituency projects within my short stint at the federal level.

“I have fought the good fight for you my people, Along the way, suffered humiliations and enjoyed many moments of victory but I am thankful in all things. I have been pressed but not crushed, persecuted but not abandoned, badly hurt but not destroyed. I resonate with the tireless and irrepressible Spirit of the Edo People. By the grace of God, nothing and no one can stop us. After all, I be original Edo son; your 100 percent home boy.

“This is why today, I stand before you with great conviction and resolve, as I declare my intention to run for the office of the governor of Edo State under the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the upcoming 2024 election”, he declared.

  • Ibeanu Urges West African EMBs to Prioritise Post-election Lessons to Deepen Democracy

Ibeanu Urges West African EMBs to Prioritise Post-election Lessons to Deepen Democracy

With elections increasingly becoming triggers and drivers of political conflicts and instability in West Africa, Okechukwu Ibeanu, a Professor of Political Science and expert on election management and administration has charged Election Management Bodies (EMBs) in the region to prioritise electoral reforms and lessons learnt to improve the quality and outcome of elections.

“EMBs in West Africa should take seriously the implementation of the important lessons offered by PEARL (Post-election Audit, Review and Learning), he said, adding that the “hard-won democracy” in the region should not be taken for granted.

In a Keynote to a Symposium themed: “Institutionalising Lesson-Learning Processes for Improved Electoral Processes,” which preceded the just-concluded 9th Biennial General Assembly of the ECOWAS Network of Electoral Commissions (ECONEC) in Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire, Ibeanu, a former National Commissioner with Nigeria’s Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), explained that “the purpose of all these lessons is to improve our elections and democracy through electoral reform.”

“However, we need to rethink how we understand electoral reform,” he told the gathering of members of EMBs, election specialists and representatives of development partners that support elections in Africa.

“Presently, there is too much emphasis on changing the law, bringing in new regulations and altering procedures. But it seems to me that we need to shift emphasis more to democratic reforms. This will call for mechanisms necessary to ensure compliance with the law and empowering citizens more to defend democracy,” he observed.

Four of the 15-nation Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) are currently under military rule coupled with perennial election-related violence, polarising contestations and disruptive legal disputes raising concerns that democracy is on the decline in the region.

According to the keynote speaker, “There are indeed persistent threats lurking everywhere. These, ironically, include agencies and individuals put in charge of nurturing democracy. As important as election is, it is not sufficient to guarantee democracy. Popular support is always needed and that is not unrelated to the ability of democratic governments to deliver the basic needs of their citizens.”

He said that election managers “have a responsibility to first deliver those governments in the right way. Consequently, constant reforms and improvements through information and experience sharing and peer-learning are needed to save both elections and democracy generally. If we fail to do so, we might lose this epoch of democracy as we did the immediate post-independence one.”

Ibeanu identified ten transformational post-election lessons, which could be leveraged fix future elections and save democracy in the region.

“The first lesson is that there is a persistent trust deficit. We, almost at the drop of a hat talk down on our processes, make unsubstantiated accusations against our EMBs and thereby erode public confidence in the process and outcome of elections. Yet, trust is at the very heart of elections,” he affirmed.

According to him: “electoral process is to politics or democracy what the market is to the economy,” adding: …if the big political players, especially political parties and candidates continue to question the integrity of the EMB, the voters, who use their votes to invest in these candidates and parties, will soon lose confidence in the process and the value of the ballot will decline.”

Ibeanu further noted that the “quality of an election cannot be divorced from the state of infrastructure, structure and culture of the country in which it is conducted.”

Similarly, “the quality of rules affects the quality of elections – how and when they are made, their clarity, how they are interpreted and whether they hamstring the EMB,” he said.

“Consequently, for good elections to happen,” he said: “rules must be made in advance and in good time; they must be publicly known, and all individuals and agencies must adhere strictly to them,” also adding that the “quality of elections depends on availing a level playing field for all” as well as “the existence of real, impartial opportunities for redressing grievances.”

“Adequate and timely funding are at the heart of quality elections,” Ibeanu said, noting: “Paradoxically, Africa is poor, but its elections are becoming excessively expensive,” citing the 2017 elections in Liberia which cost about US$38.3 million, or almost 1.8% of the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) that year.

On technology, he explained that “digital technologies generally, and particularly as applied to election management, is a terrain of global power in which Africa is disadvantaged. This is so because Africa is essentially a consumer of digital technologies produced elsewhere. “

Describing election as “a multistakeholder responsibility,” the professor said “what other agencies do or fail to do may be as important in determining the quality of elections as what the EMB does. Indeed, we deceive ourselves if we believe that what the election management body does or fails to do is necessarily the most critical thing in an election.”

He further harped on the “moral responsibility of ruling parties and governments to make the electoral process free and fair for all players,” adding: …if they (ruling parties and governments) decide to muzzle the electoral process, who can really stand in their way? They control funds, security, the media and can buy or extract favourable court judgements.

Therefore, it is an emerging consensus that ruling parties and governments must always recognize this moral burden and consciously act in the right manner,” Ibeanu stressed.

In addition to effective implementation of post-election lessons, he also recommended an annual or biennial ECONEC Colloquium for Knowledge Sharing (ECKS), as a “basis for establishing a resource centre on election management for West Africa under ECONEC.”

He also suggests that an electronic register of needs by EMBs and a separate register of skills available in EMBs in the region should be developed and circulated among ECONEC members to facilitate technical exchanges and support.

A highlight of the Abidjan General Assembly was the election of Mohamed Kenewui Konneh, Chief Electoral Commissioner and Chair of the Electoral Commission for Sierra Leone (ECSL) as President of the ECONEC Steering Committee for the next two years.

He replaced Cote d’Ivoire’s Ibrahime Coulibaly-Kuibiert who has served out his two-year term on the ECONEC role.

Other members of the new Steering Committee are the heads of Electoral Commissions of Benin Republic (1st vice President), Cabo Verde (2nd vice President), Burkina Faso (Treasurer) and the Gambia (deputy Treasurer), while Serigne Mamadou Ka, the acting Head the ECOWAS Electoral Assistance Division (EAD), is to serve as Permanent Secretary of the Abuja-based ECONEC Secretariat.

Konneh was 1st vice President on the Coulibaly-Kuibiert-led Steering Committee.

One of his major assignments since assuming the ECSL chair in January 2020, was the conduct of Sierria Leone’s Presidential and legislative elections last July, with Commission declaring sitting President Julius Maada Bio re-elected for a second term.

However, Sierra Leone’s major opposition party has rejected the official results alleging electoral malpractices.

Also, some local and international observer Missions in their separate reports said the electoral process, particularly the results management lacked transparency.

ECONEC was set up in 2008 to foster cooperation as well as knowledge, information and experience sharing among member States and to support ECOWAS in the realisation of its mandate on the promotion of electoral processes with integrity for the consolidation of democracy in the region. • Ondo crisis: Remain as Deputy Gov, Tinubu tells Aiyedatiwa

Ondo crisis: Remain as Deputy Gov, Tinubu tells Aiyedatiwa

The over six months political logjam in Ondo state has been resolved by President Bola Tinubu.

President Tinubu met with all the gladiators behind closed doors for over six hours at the villa, Abuja.

Those who attended the meeting included the National Chairman of the APC, Umar Gbanduje; embattled deputy Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa; APC state Chairman, Ade Adetimehin; Speaker of the House of Assembly; Hon. Olamide Oladiji and Senator Jimoh Ibrahim.

Other include members of the House of Assembly; the Secretary to the Ondo State Government; Princess Oladunni Odu; the Governor’s aides including Dare Aragbaiye; Aminu Raimi; and the Governor’s son, Babajide Akeredolu.

Sources at the meeting told Vanguard in Akure that the president directed that the status quo should be maintained.

According to the source, “the President frowned at the move to declare Aiyedatiwa as acting Governor and warned that such must never happen in the state.

“President Tinubu directed that the deputy governor should go and resume work as deputy governor and not as acting governor.

“He also directed that the state executive council should remain intact ditto for the party exco, contrary to threats.

The President went further to ask Aiyedatiwa to do a letter of undertaking and maintain peace in the state.

Mr. President also appointed the SSG, Princess Oladunni, Party Chairman, Adetimehin and the Speaker of the House, Oladiji to monitor and report the deputy governor if he deviated from the resolution reached at the meeting.”

” The President also gave a matching order to the deputy governor to withdraw all cases instituted by him and his group in the court with immediate effect.

Recall that 11 members of the House of Assembly had planned to hold plenary in the state to declare the deputy governor as acting governor until it was scuttled following the intervention of the President.

The lawmakers were alleged to have been infiltrated by some powerful forces outside the state who were pushing for Aiyedatiwa to be declared as the acting governor.

It was also learnt that the National chairman of the party, Ganduje, bought into the agreement until the intervention of the President.

The move was said to have been instigated by the deputy governor in the company of the national chairman of the party, Ganduje.

Meanwhile, a group, the Progressives Mandate Renewal (PMR) has hailed President Bola Tinubu over his intervention in the political crisis in the state.

The group said Tinubu has again proved himself as the leader of the people and a compassionate leader who appreciates loyalty.

Its coordinator, Samson Ogunyemi said Tinubu had humbled the arrogance and pride displayed by the Deputy Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa’s group.

Ogunyemi in a statement, in Akure, said:” The target of the deputy governor’s group is to declare the governor incapacitated and oust the governor. They were fervently rooting for the governor to be disgraced out of office.

“While the meeting was going on, the deputy governor’s group was already jubilating on social media. They thought the outcome of the meeting would be in their Favour.

“This is a defeated expectation for the deputy governor and his group. Their wishes and expectations have been dashed and defeated. The people of the state can now see the true nature of the deputy governor.

“We are particularly happy that the President has ordered that the status quo must remain. This is the right step towards ensuring peace and understanding in the state.

“The resolution passed and the request by the President that Aiyedatiwa should sign a resignation letter undated, will tame his excesses and guide him into behaving proper.

We will continue to appreciate President Tinubu and assure him of our commitment and undying support.

Opposing Factions Vow to Uphold Peace, Maintain Status Quo

    By Biola Lawal

Abuja (Flowerbudnews):.  In his bid to restore political stability in Ondo State, President Bola Tinubu, late on Friday, waded into the months-long crisis in the All Progressive Party (APC) controlled state government.

The bickering was between factions loyal to the Executive Governor, Rotimi Akeredolu, and the Deputy Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa.

The resolution was the outcome of a marathon negotiations between the President and the Deputy Governor, representatives of Governor Akeredolu, federal and state lawmakers of Ondo, officials of the state’s chapter of the All Progressives’ Congress, and other stakeholders in the state at the State House, Abuja.

A statement by Ajuri Ngelale, Special Adviser to the President on Media & Publicity disclosed that the President advised all opposing parties to bury the hatchet and embrace peace, eliciting commitments to this effect.

This meant that Governor Akeredolu remains Chief Executive of the State, Aiyedatiwa remains Deputy Governor, and members of the State Executive Council continue their respective duties, even as the leadership of the State’s House of Assembly and the APC Chapter in Ondo State is preserved.

Mr. Aiyedatiwa, who declared his decision to maintain the status quo and unite all the factions, said: “I want to say that I pledge to all of you that I embrace every one of you. I put behind all that has happened before now. I’ve let go and also let God, just as the President has advised us.

“And I want to say that with no offence, no guile in my mind whatsoever. All that has happened is politics. Impeachment is part of politics. If you survive it, it is also politics. It has come. I’ve survived it, and every other thing is in the past.

“It is one big family and our father has intervened to bring all the children together to remain under the same family and with the position that I occupy, I will carry every one of you along in every decision that needs to be taken and in everything that we do, we will work together; the executive and the legislature will work together to ensure that governance is on the right track.”

He pleaded with all members of the State Executive Council to rally around the Governor and himself to “bring the dividend of democracy” to the people of Ondo State.

“All the Executive Council members, I want to plead with all of you to cooperate with me, with the Governor, so that we can bring the dividend of democracy to our people.

“We should respect one another regarding the offices we occupy and our age differences. So, it’s going to be mutual respect.

“And I want to assure the party structure that we will work together because the party is supreme. We will always give you your due respect,” the Ondo State Deputy Governor pledged.

The Speaker of the Ondo State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Oladiji Olamide, who read the details of the resolution, said, “Our resolution is that one, we shall embrace peace. Secondly, there would be no more dissolution of the cabinet, and the Deputy Governor would maintain the status quo as far as the House of Assembly leadership is concerned.

“We will maintain the status quo as far as the party leadership in the state is concerned and maintain the status quo as far as the leadership of the State House of Assembly is concerned. Thank you, Mr. President.”

On her part, the Secretary to the State Government, Princess Oladunni Odu, stated, “Our Father, the President, has taken the trouble to settle our rancour in Ondo State. We owe you all the gratitude, Sir. We will not disappoint you. We have taken every word you said. And we are going home as one united family under the party, APC.”

In his remarks, the Ondo State APC Chairman, Ade Adetimehin, expressed delight at the outcome of Friday’s late night deliberations, affirming that the party will remain a watchdog to ensure that the new commitments are adhered to.

“Today is my happiest moment. And I know sanity has come to Ondo State. So, on behalf of the teeming supporters of our party in the state, we appreciate our leader

CLO sues for peace over APGA, APC cold war in Anambra

    By Flowerbudnews
Enugu: The Civil Liberties Organisation (CLO) has urged leadership of All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA) and All Progressives Congress (APC) to caution their overzealous supporters to shun despicable verbal and vitriolic attacks in Anambra.

“There should be an end to the current despicable verbal attacks to forestall and avoid the negative situation degenerating to open confrontations, unrest and blood-letting in the state,” the Chairman of CLO, Anambra, Comrade Vincent Ezekwueme, said.

Ezekwueme told newsmen in Enugu on Sunday that Anambra political gladiators should give peace a chance by calling on their supporters, praise singers, hangers-on and sycophants to refrain from making inflammatory statements.

According to him, political gladiators and their supporters should stop casting unsubstantiated aspersions and fake news against perceived or imaginary opponents of their principals and leaders.

He noted that there had been high political tensions in the state recently following outrageous verbal attacks, insults, humiliations and abusive words between supporters of APGA and APC in the state.

He said: “Although, constructive, corrective and patriotic criticism is beauty and essence of democracy and democratic governance, and absence of constructive criticism is a great threat to democracy.

“Pertinently hate and fake speech is the bane and threat to democracy and democratic culture, hence the inevitable need to discard it.

“It is noteworthy that the state has had enough of unrest, crisis and cries; it is in dire need of peace, unity, trust, tranquility, tolerance and mutual sharing of burdens of life.”

The CLO boss called on political leaders to always ensure their supporters are civil and respect the views, dignity, interest and privacy of perceived opponents of their principals and toe the path of constitutionality, rule of law and social justice.

“It is correct to say that every four years elective offices become vacant; it is left for the electorate to withdraw or renew the mandate depending on the performances of the incumbent.

“Our political leaders and their supporters should think before they speak to avoid unnecessarily heightening the political tension and acrimony in the state.

“It is too early to discuss, canvass or campaign for November 2025 governorship election as incumbent governor has not spent half of his four years tenure,” he added.

Ezekwueme called on political leaders to concentrate and rededicate themselves to the service of God and humanity as well as provisions of elusive but much cherished dividends of democracy. /Flowerbudnews

Rivers Govt urges politicians to invest in youth development

Port Harcourt, Nov. 18, 2023 – Mr Chisom Gbali, Rivers Commissioner for Youths Development, said that investment in the youth was the best way forward for every government that wished to succeed.

Gbali said this in Port Harcourt on Friday at a dinner organised by chairman, Andoni Local Government Area in honor of graduands and beneficiaries of the Andoni Maritime Scholarship Scheme.

The commissioner commended Andoni council Chairman, Erastus Awortu, for his selfless service to the people, particularly youths in the area.

“Upon assumption as commissioner, I was in Andoni few months ago, I tried relating with the grassroots and my findings were overwhelming against the backdrop that Andoni is not hospitable and peaceful.

“But what I saw was a great population of youths yearning and also willing to be developed; today the chairman has contributed to filling that gap at the most appropriate time, which is why there’s a relative peace in Andoni,” he said.

Earlier, the chairman noted that there were several factors that could lead to either success or failure of every government.

He said that several short term empowerment Programmes existed and that such had never been sustainable but for self glorification of political office holders.

“For me, this scholarship programme is the greatest achievement of my administration because, God willing, these 15 beneficiaries will all work and grow to be good ambassadors of Andoni.

“The results from performances of the cadets showed that they truely merited this opportunity based on dint of hardwork and the multiplier effect is what we look forward to,” the chairman said.

He enjoined the graduands to take advantage of supports from the council and the institute to ensure certification and become gainfully employed.

In separate remarks, the Chief Executive of Charkin Maritime Academy, Mr Charles Wami, commended the council for sponsoring the programme….,.
