The Enugu State Government says the state  has transformed healthcare system and improved delivery through science-driven policies.

The Commissioner for Health, Prof. George Ugwu, said this during a news conference on Tuesday in Enugu organised to mark the 2026 World Health Day (WHD), championed by the World Health Organisation (WHO).

The WHD Day, which is celebrated every April 7, has the theme: “Together for Health. Stand with Science.”

Ugwu said, “Here in Enugu State, we have witnessed the power of science-driven policies under the vision and leadership of His Excellency, Dr Peter Mbah, the Executive Governor of Enugu State.

“Through improved disease surveillance systems, strengthened laboratory capacity, and coordinated emergency preparedness under the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control framework, and normative standards set by WHO, we are better equipped to detect and respond to outbreaks.”

He noted that investments in Primary Healthcare Centers (PHCs) revitalisation, targeting 260 new Type-2 PHCs, and seven Type-3 PHCs, reflected the  vision of Gov. Mbah towards achieving Universal Health Coverage (UHC).

Ugwu said that the state was accelerating routine immunisation coverage; reducing maternal mortality and morbidity through improved reproductive, maternal, and child and neonatal health services, and digital health grounded in data and evidence.

He acknowledged partnership of UN agencies and NGOs in improving the health of residents, commending the World Health Organisation for providing technical assistance and catalytic financial support in support of state’s health programmes.

Ugwu noted that in the state, like many parts of the country, the health system contends with workforce gaps, infrastructure needs, funding constraints, and increasing demand for quality health services.

The commissioner said, “These challenges are interconnected. They cannot be solved by one sector alone. That is why the One Health Approach is particularly relevant for us.”

He said that the state was strengthening collaboration between health, agriculture and environmental sectors to improve surveillance, risk assessment and cure in an holistic way.

“As a state, the vision of Gov. Peter Mbah aligns with four key pillars, which are universal health coverage; resilient health systems, modernization and workforce development.” he said.

He noted that together through science, solidarity, and sustained commitment, the state would build a healthier, safer and more prosperous state for all.

The lined-up of activities for the World Health Day and 78th anniversary of WHO, included: a roadshow within Enugu metropolis and a medical outreach organised by WHO and the state’s  health ministry for civil servants.

He acknowledged partnership of UN agencies and NGOs in improving the health of residents, especially the WHO, celebrating its 78th birthday, for providing technical assistance and catalytic financial support in support of state health programmes.

Easter: Prof. Ugwu, Ministry of Health felicitate with Enugu residents, urge prioritising healthcare

The Enugu State Ministry of Health has felicitated with Enugu State residents on Easter, which signifies the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

The Commissioner for Health, Prof. George Ugwu, gave the goodwill message in a statement issued to newsmen in Enugu on Friday.

Ugwu called on residents to adhere to the lessons of Easter by exemplifying virtues of sacrifice, love, peace and one looking out for the health and well-being of others within families and communities.

According to him, at the present age and time as well as state government overwhelming investment on health, everyone residing in the state should emulate the current Administration of Gov. Peter Mbah by making sound health number one priority.

“The death and resurrection of Christ should motivate us rising in all lukewarm attitude towards health; therefore, being active on health issues and prioritising healthcare concerns.

“Supporting all health projects, which includes the 260 Type-2 Primary Healthcare Centres (PHCs),
programmes and initiatives of His Excellency for them to make the needed impact and yield benefits to vast majority of our people.

“Ensure all health facilities within each ward and various communities provided by His Excellency are personally protected and monitored,” he said.

The commissioner urged residents to get actively involved in healthcare by creating access and constant patronage of PHCs and other hospitals close to them through the N12,000 yearly health insurance scheme.

“We are calling on Individuals to enroll in the state health insurance scheme; while public-spirited individuals and philanthropists can assist the indigent and others to enroll in this highly beneficial scheme (or programme).

“Even family members and friends abroad (in Diaspora) can invest and enroll for their kits and kins or elderly people at home in any given village or community,” he said.

The commissioner also enjoined residents to ensure strict personal and environmental hygiene at all time.

Ugwu noted that another ideal way of prioritising health is for residents to get Permanent Voter Card (PVC) ready to re-elect our health-loving Gov. Peter Mbah, for him to continue all laudable health projects and programmes.

“On behalf of the staff of Enugu State Ministry of Health and entire health workers, we wish residents a blissful celebration of Easter,” he added.

Security Operatives Foil Disruption of OYRLEA Crackdown on Illegal Trading

    By Adewale Owoade

The Oyo State Rule of Law Enforcement Authority (OYRLEA) has reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining order and safeguarding public spaces following a successful enforcement operation against illegal street trading across key locations in Ibadan.

The operation, conducted on Tuesday, covered Gate, Molete and Challenge areas. It was led by the Chairman of the State Environmental Task Force, retired DCP Francis Ojomo, alongside the Chief of Staff to the OYRLEA Chairperson, Iyabode Akinbode, Esq., with support from enforcement officers, the Nigeria Police Force and the Oyo State Amotekun Corps.

During the exercise at Challenge, enforcement officers encountered resistance from suspected miscreants who attempted to obstruct lawful duties and incite disorder. Security operatives providing cover swiftly intervened, dispersing the crowd and restoring calm without any reported casualties.

The prompt response prevented a potential escalation and ensured the smooth continuation of the enforcement exercise.

Four individuals were subsequently arraigned in court on charges bordering on obstruction of law enforcement officers and violation of environmental regulations.

In a related development, enforcement officers impounded five cows being herded along the Molete expressway in violation of the state’s open grazing regulations.

The Authority reiterated that enforcement of the ban on illegal street trading and open grazing remains lawful, continuous and non-negotiable. It warned that any attempt to interfere with officers carrying out their duties constitutes a criminal offence and will be prosecuted accordingly.

Traders occupying unauthorised roadways and public corridors have been directed to vacate such locations immediately, while herders have been advised to keep livestock off major roads and expressways.

The Authority further warned that individuals or groups who incite, obstruct, or attempt to hijack enforcement operations pose a threat to public safety and will face arrest and prosecution.

OYRLEA urged residents to comply with regulations and cooperate fully with enforcement agencies in the interest of public order, safety and environmental sanitation.

World Oral Health Day: Oyo Strengthens Push for Quality Dental Services.

    By Adewale Owoade.

The Oyo State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening oral healthcare delivery through strategic collaborations aimed at improving access to quality dental services and promoting oral health awareness among residents across the state.

The Commissioner for Health, Dr. Oluwaserimi Ajetunmobi, stated this on Tuesday during activities marking the 2026 World Oral Health Day at the Ministry’s Conference Room.

She emphasised that oral health is an integral part of overall well-being and should not be treated separately from general health.

Ajetunmobi commended Governor Seyi Makinde for his visionary leadership and unwavering commitment to the health sector under the Omituntun 2.0 agenda, noting that his administration continues to prioritize initiatives that improve the well-being of citizens in sustainable ways.

She noted that the government has taken deliberate steps to strengthen preventive and promotive healthcare services across the state.

The commissioner also appreciated the support of Aspira Nigeria Limited and other partners, adding that their collaboration has significantly enhanced the reach of oral health promotion initiatives in Oyo State.

She, therefore, urged residents to take personal responsibility for their oral health and to share this important message within their homes and communities.

According to her, this year’s theme, “A Happy Mouth is a Happy Life,” delivers a simple but powerful message.

“It is time to bring oral health to the forefront of our public health agenda. We must adopt a holistic, life-course approach that integrates oral health into the broader healthcare delivery system, promotes prevention, and empowers people to make healthier choices,” she said.

Ajetunmobi highlighted a key milestone in the sector, noting the integration of basic oral healthcare services into antenatal care across primary healthcare facilities.

She explained that pregnant women now receive oral health education, screening, and preventive care as part of routine maternal services.

Earlier in his welcome address, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Health, Dr. Akintunde Ayinde, said the essence of World Oral Health Day is to raise awareness and improve universal access to oral healthcare.

He noted that available data indicates that only a few people pay adequate attention to their oral health.

Ayinde stressed that achieving improved oral health outcomes requires collective efforts, adding that the state is working towards attaining universal health coverage by 2030.

In a presentation titled “A Happy Mouth is a Happy Life,” the Deputy Director of Medical Services at the Hospitals Management Board, Dr. Chisom Fajimi, emphasised the importance of maintaining proper oral hygiene, noting that the mouth is a vital part of the body.

She demonstrated practical tooth-brushing techniques and explained that many oral diseases can be prevented through good oral hygiene practices, reiterating that a healthy mouth contributes to a healthy life.

A representative of Aspira Nigeria Limited, Mr. Subair Babajide, reaffirmed the company’s commitment to supporting oral health awareness campaigns in the state.

In their separate remarks, the Chairman of the Nigerian Dental Association, Oyo State Chapter, Dr. Adeola Akintola, alongside other dental professionals including nurses, technologists, technicians, and therapists, emphasised the need for improved oral hygiene practices.

They noted that most oral health conditions are preventable and can be effectively treated when detected early.

The event also featured oral health screening for staff at the State Secretariat Clinic.

Renewed Hope: FG targets 2.4m clean cooking stoves rollout in 2026

    By Muhammad Nur Tijani

The Federal Government, through the National Agency for the Great Green Wall (NAGGW), Nigeria, has pledged to distribute 2.4 million clean cooking stoves across Northern Nigeria in 2026.

This, it said, is with a view to reinforcing its commitment to sustainable energy solutions and climate action.

The Director-General of NAGGW, Dr Saleh Abubakar, disclosed this during the Renewed Hope Climate Change Awareness Grand Tour of the BURN clean cooking manufacturing facility in Kano on Monday.

Represented by Dr Olanrewaju Ogunmilua, Special Technical Assistant to the DG, Abubakar commended the partnership between NAGGW, BURN Manufacturing, and the Presidential Team driving the Renewed Hope Climate Change Initiative.

He described clean cooking as a critical environmental, public health and economic priority, noting that over 40 million households in Northern Nigeria still relied on traditional biomass for cooking.

“This practice contributes significantly to deforestation, air pollution, and health risks, especially for women and children.

“With presence in eleven frontline states, robust community networks, and proven field structures, NAGGW is well-positioned to scale interventions that bring practical, sustainable solutions to communities,” the D-G said.

Abubakar explained that the collaboration with BURN manufacturing could unlock over N300 billion in carbon financing, create jobs, and expand access to affordable clean cooking and alternative energy solutions for rural and underserved communities.

“The agency plans to leverage state-level coordination platforms and community-based systems to ensure transparency, speed, and sustainability in implementing the clean cooking program,” he added.

Earlier, Special Assistant to the President on Climate Matters, Yusuf Kilani, reaffirmed the federal government’s commitment to climate change awareness and sustainable energy solutions.

He noted that the visit formed part of the campaign to take climate awareness to all geopolitical zones and states.

Kilani commended the clean cookstoves being produced and distributed in Nigeria for their efficiency, sustainability, and significant reduction in carbon emissions compared with traditional methods.

“Some stoves are being distributed free to support low-income households, while others are available at affordable rates,” he stated.

He said: “The initiative not only reduces household energy costs but also creates jobs, empowers youth, and stimulates local production.”

Senior Special Assistant to the President on Climate Technology, Olamide Fagbuji, said the tour demonstrated how integrating climate technology, local manufacturing, and carbon finance could accelerate Nigeria’s transition to cleaner and more sustainable energy.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the initiative’s broader benefits include economic growth, job creation, and improved social welfare.

Regional Carbon Policy Lead for West Africa at BURN, Mr Sola Fatoba, said the ISO-certified facility, one of Africa’s largest, produces 35,000 stoves monthly, with the capacity to scale to 100,000, creating jobs and supporting women’s participation.

Fatoba added that Kano ranks among the top four states in climate governance, reinforcing its role as a regional clean energy hub. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)
