The Senate has confirmed the appointment of former Inspector-General of Police, Alhaji Musiliu Smith as the Chairman of the Police Service Commission (PSC).

“Let us congratulate the new members of the Police Service Commission and at the same time commend the quality of the candidates that have been nominated and brought forward by Mr President.

“We wish all the members the best of luck. They have a lot of expectation from Nigerians and before this nomination that is why we fast-tracked the screening.

“A lot of people are expecting that with their experience to support the police in carrying out the necessary reform that is required, particularly in ensuring that we drive a merit-orientated police force and performance-driven, that would motivate all the necessary members to do the right thing to provide us security.

“Let us at the same time also ensure that they look into the areas of rewarding performance in being able to compensate those who have worked hard.

Meanwhile, President Buhari has requested the Upper Chamber’s approval of Mr Muiz Banire as Chairman, Assets Management Corporation of Nigeria (AMCON) and Bello Tukur as Chairman, Federal Civil Service Commission (FCSC).

  • Treat patients with respect, NHIS urges health workers

National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) on Tuesday urged health workers to treat patients with respect and dignity for easy access to health delivery.

The Executive Director of NHIS, Prof. Usman Yusuf, made the appeal in an interview with journalists shortly after 42nd Annual General and Scientific Meeting organised by West African College of Physicians WACP, Nigeria chapter in Kaduna.

According to him, NHIS has done a lot of sacrifice to the country because of the funding it gives to hospitals.

He said that the scheme had improved access to many patients across the country and increased funding to hospitals, stressing that hospitals should, therefore, treat patients with respect and dignity as stipulated by the ethics of the medical profession.

The National Chairman of  WACP, Dr Abel Nze-Onunu, said “Nigeria is a country with a lot of resources both human and material, but yet to get it right in the health sector.”

He added that the meeting was about examining the problems and challenges of the health sector in a scientific manner.

Rating maternal and infant mortality rate, he said “we have done several studies in these two areas. These areas are one of the indices we used for human development in the world.

“Nigeria performed extremely low in these areas and one of the key reason for this conference and we are going to discuss about this extensively.”

  • Pakistan Fashion round-up: Maya Ali turns up the heat at ‘Teefa in Trouble’ promotions

Pakistan Fashion round-up: Maya Ali turns up the heat at ‘Teefa in Trouble’ promotions

    KARACHI:

It won’t be long now before Ali Zafar and Maya Ali make their big screen debuts with Teefa In Trouble, slated to release on July 20. Needless to say, the cast and crew is elbows deep with promoting the upcoming action-comedy but it’s Maya who’s already been stealing the show with her impeccable outfits this week.

The actor has been revealing one gorgeous outfit after another. Here’s a closer look at some of Maya’s best looks from the promotion.

Clearly Maya’s stylist Ania Fawad was thinking out of the box for here as not many would pair a white button down shirt with this oh-so-elegant skirt. But that’s the beauty of staple clothing items such as this top.

The Mann Mayal star looked so effortlessly chic clad in this H&M skirt and Uniqlo top. The net skirt is to die for, with its pastel-coloured floral embroidery and slightly shorter lining, which brings in a touch of sensuality.

Maya accessorised this with minimal jewellery, black angular sunnies and a Gucci belt which, to be honest, everyone and their mother has and so, was a let down for me.

My favourite part of this whole outfit though, was definitely her choice of footwear. The lime green heels with the black sling back detailing just elevates this ensemble and takes it to another level, even more so than the skirt did.

Now this was a rather daring outfit. As her take on colour blocking, the Diyar-e-Dil star rocked a baby blue illusion top with straight bright yellow pants.

It shouldn’t have worked but somehow it did. Maya adorned it with white Jimmy Choo’s and a simple watch, with wavy hair and bronzed makeup.

The peek through detail in the top, although very welcome by me, could have been a little too much for some as this was an already pretty out-there outfit.

The fit of the trousers was immaculate and there’s not much I would personally change here, except maybe the colour of the top. Wouldn’t navy blue have complemented the yellow much better?

Last but not least is this stunner of an outfit – my personal favourite. There’s something so effortless about this look, with the contrasting colours entwined with the textures, simple accessories and bold makeup.

I’m pretty sure Maya made many heads turn garbed in this Ohaila Khan ensemble consisting a magenta ankle-length fringe skirt and black chiffon blouse.

    PHOTO: INSTAGRAM/ MAYA ALI

The barely there YSL sandals speak for themselves with that statement heel. And keeping the jewellery matching but to a minimum was certainly a good move. Maya’s makeup here was flawless with brown smokey eyes, rosy cheeks and a bold lip, tying in with the tones of the outfit.

Overall, Maya has definitely upped her style game this year. I’m looking forward to seeing her rocking more fun outfits in the future.

NSCDC honours NAN reporter in Maiduguri

The Borno Command, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), on Monday, presented an award to Mr Hamza Sulaiman, a News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reporter in Maiduguri.

The State Commandant, Alhaji Abdullahi Ibrahim, while presenting the award, said that the gesture was in recognition of the recipient’s hard work and objective reportage of the command’s activities.

Ibrahim described the reporter as an astute journalist who demonstrated high sense of discipline and professionalism in the discharge of his duties.

“Through the reporter, NAN published over 150 stories of the command’s activities in the past two years.

“Such effort is commendable as it informed members of the public on our activities, thereby contributing to the success of the counter-insurgency campaign and restoration of peace to the state.

“The Commander-General, Mr Abdullahi Gana, recognises the outstanding performance, and the command awarded the prize to the reporter.

“Mr Hamza is worthy of emulation by other reporters,” he said.

  • Sen. Abe attributes APC’s victory in Ekiti to popularity

    By Ikuru Lizzy

Sen. Magnus Abe (APC) representing Rivers South/East Senatorial District has advised political parties to ensure that their candidates interface properly with the people to gain high level popularity.

Reacting to the victory of the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Mr Kayode Fawemi, in the recent governorship election in Ekiti, Abe attributed the victory to the popularity of the APC and its candidate.

The senator said in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Port Harcourt on Tuesday that the people of Ekiti voted massively for Fayemi because of his popularity and good interaction he has with the people unlike his opponent Prof. Oladipo Olusola.

According to him, the PDP biggest mistake in the election was allowing the governorship campaign to revolve round the outgoing governor Ayodele Fayose instead of their candidate.

“The biggest lesson from the PDP’s defeat is that the party’s flag bearer is unpopular in the political landscape of Ekiti.

” Everybody knows Fayose as a sitting governor in Ekiti and Mr Kayode Fayemi as the flag bearer of the APC but only few people know the PDP flagbearer.

“On the day of the election the good people of Ekiti voted massively for the candidate they know, I think this is an instructive lesson for politicians across the country.”

Abe congratulated Fayemi and the APC on their victory and advised the PDP to stop the bickering and support the incoming governor in an effort to move the state forward.

“The PDP should accept this defeat in good faith, I think litigation should not be an automatic part of the electoral process except where necessary.

” In the case of Ekiti where the election was adjudged free, fair and credible by foreign and local observers, there is absolutely no need for any litigation, ” Abe said.

On his governorship ambition in Rivers and dissatisfaction with the outcome of the party’s local government and state congresses,  Abe said he had confidence in the APC.

“APC is a party that upholds rules and I believe that the laws of the party will prevail in Rivers.” (NAN)

  • House of Reps aspirant decries cash for votes

Suleiman Umar, an aspirant for the House of Representatives seat in Bida/Gbako/Katcha Local Government Areas in Niger State has decried the practice of enticing voters with money.

Umar made the disapproval during a meeting with his campaign coordinators.

He urged them to conceptualise his visions and mission so that they would be able to translate them to the electorates.

Umar said that one of his visions was to take Bida/Gbako/Katcha federal constituency to appreciable level in terms of economic, educational and infrastructural development through effective legislations which formed parts of his campaign manifesto.

“I am not desperate for power but only worried about the situation of his people.

“The reason I am vying for the seat of House of Representative is to change the situation and to move forward in terms of peace and development, we must desist from money politics.

“One of the reasons why our development is at a snail’s speed is because some of us have sold our conscience to some unscrupulous politicians.

“The implication is that the electorate will not have any right to ask the representatives questions, therefore, we must not repeat the mistakes of the past.”

The aspirant vowed not to condone the ideology of money politics no matter the situation but admitted that one must spend money on politics for logistics.

According to him, to buy votes means mortgaging the future of children and those yet unborn.

He also warned the electorates not to fall for tricks of some politicians who dropped names by deceiving them into believing that they were the anointed candidate of the government.

“ If they come to tell you that, ask them what they can do for the progress of your society, doing that would secure the future of their children,’’  he said.

Umar urged his coordinators to also sensitise the electorates who had registered and yet to obtain their PVCs to do so.

He said that those who had yet to register should do that as a matter of urgency, as the INEC closed registration on Aug. 17, 2018.
