The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has announced that the medicine market at Bridgehead, Onitsha, was reopened on March 7, following a shutdown for comprehensive sanitisation.

Dr Martins Iluyomade, the NAFDAC Director for the Southeast, confirmed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday.

NAN reports that he agency had closed the Ogbo Ogwu and three adjoining markets from February 10 to March 7 to sanitise the medicine distribution system.

Iluyomade explained that there were administrative conditions every shop owner had to fulfil before their shops, previously sealed during the operation, could be unsealed.

He said that the process was put in place to prevent the recurrence of the issues that led to the market’s closure.

He highlighted that pharmaceuticals were highly regulated due to their impact on public health and national security, adding that NAFDAC’s mandate, under the NAFDAC Act, was to regulate and control the sales and distribution of drugs.

Iluyomade also clarified that the market had not been closed, contrary to reports from some media outlets.

He said that the process underway was focused on documenting and regularising the shops, ensuring that no shop would be unsealed without completing the necessary clearance procedures.

He said NAFDAC had set up a special desk to facilitate this process efficiently.

Iluyomade thanked the market leadership and the Anambra state government for their cooperation and understanding.

He further stated that the agency was not aware of any internal conflicts within the market.(NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

NewsI will remove monarch whose domain is not peaceful — Gov Adeleke warns

Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke has warned that he will remove form office any traditional ruler in whose domain violence re-occurs.

This is as Governor Adeleke warned of stern state action against traditional rulers of Ifon, Erin Osun and Ilobu communities if they fail to sustain current peace and de-escalation of the crisis in their communities.

Governor Adeleke’s warning was contained in a statement issued by Olawale Rasheed, his spokesperson, on Monday in Osogbo.

gathered that the warning was issued against the backdrop of online reports that some faceless groups across the conflict areas were planning another round of attacks.

The statement reads, “In the midst of Sallah celebrations, I got reports of some people planning another round of conflict around Ifon, Ilobu and Erin Osun towns. The security agencies have tightened surveillance to ensure no attacks take place.

“The security agencies are also speeding up the interrogation of key chieftains and actors in the conflict. I will remind top leaders of the towns that the peace undertaking they are signing are not for joke. They will be held accountable. There will be accountability before the law

The curfew we relaxed was on humanitarian grounds. As a compassionate government, we know many innocent people are suffering because of the evil agenda of a few elements across the conflict areas. Any attempt to exploit the adjustment of the curfew for renewed violence will be met with full re-imposition of the 24-hour curfew.

“Additionally, I will remove from office, any traditional ruler where violence recurs. This card is on the table. Royal fathers of each town must call their subjects to order. I will wield the big stick. Enough is enough,” the statement concluded.

The state government had earlier relaxed a 24 hour indefinite curfew earlier imposed on the three earring communities for the Eid-el-Fitr festival..

Enugu Govt. sets to launch 260 Smart Farm Estates – Commissioner

    By Flowerbudnews
The Enugu State Commissioner for Agriculture and Agro-Industrialization, Mr Patrick Ubru, says the state government is set to launch its 260 Smart Farm Estates meant to revolutionise agriculture and get residents back to farm.

Ubru said this on Monday while leading a team of inspectors on behalf of Gov. Peter Mbah to the site of the Gov. Peter Mbah Smart Farm Estate pilot project at Akpawfu in Nkanu East Local Government Area of Enugu State.

It would be recalled that the state government had earmarked N2 billion in the 2025 budget for Smart Farm Estates initiative across its 260 political wards in the 17 council areas within the state.

The initiative is under Gov. Mbah’s grassroots agriculture revolution tagged: “One Ward, One Smart Farm Estate’’.

Ubru said that there was a need for step-down town hall meetings for farmers in council areas to take advantage of the initiative, adding: “Time should not be wasted in organising the town hall meeting with the targeted farmers”.

He called on individuals, cooperative societies, communities, corporate organisations and other agencies in the state into agriculture and agro-industrialisation business like IFAD-VCDP and FADAMA to key into the initiative for collaboration in the interest of the people.

According to him, the ‘One Ward, One Smart Farm Estate Initiative’ will be a game-changer for our people, as our agriculture-loving governor is putting everything in place to ensure that our people get its maximum benefits.

The commissioner said, “It will be done in hectares of land, where all types of farming activities such as crop farming and exotic/economic plant such as cocoa, casava, sorghum, vegetables, exotic pepper and spices among others will be practiced.

“The state government will actively collaborate with local government councils to ensure that the initiative works efficiently as well as engage the people, especially youths, in each locality to participate in the initiative as it holds lots of benefits.

”The One Ward, One Smart Farm Estate initiative will solve so many issues particularly unemployment among youths in localities, hunger, food insecurity and knowledge gap on modern agriculture practices as workshops will be organised at local levels.”

On the Smart Farm Estate pilot project inspection, the commissioner expressed satisfaction on the zeal demonstrated by the consultant and his team so far in the project.

“I must confess that the zeal demonstrated here is in consonance with the aspirations of His Excellency, Dr Peter Ndubuisi Mbah on all projects targeted towards shoring up the state’s economy, especially agriculture and agro-industrialisation projects.

“I am personally happy with the level of security infrastructure placed here and the State Ministry of Agriculture will always be available for any need to ensure that the success story attained by this pilot farm continues,”  he added.

Corroborating, the SPA on Agriculture to the Governor, Engr. Mike Ogbuekwe, explained that the initiative was meant to diversify the state’s economy through agriculture and agro-industrialisation aimed at shoring up the state’s Internally Generated Revenue (IGR).

“The Smart Farm Estates are expected to grow local needed crops as well as special crops and other agricultural produce for export such Sorghum and Ose Nsukka (special aromatic and ornamental yellow pepper of Nsukka),” Ogbuekwe said.

He also informed the commissioner of the approach by Nigeria Breweries to the state government to work out a partnership for the supply of Sorghum which is its principal raw material at the appropriate time.

Contributing, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Mr Victor Ngwu, said that there was a need for staff of the ministry with experience in communication and documentation to be part of the initiative to get reliable data and statistics.

Earlier, the Consultant to the Smart Farm Estate pilot project, Alh. Friday Nnaji, said that the pilot project is a 200 hectares of farmland for split farms to be allocated to 200 farmers of the local council with each to grow a specific crop.

“The pilot Smart Farm Estate has two entrance points located at its opposite points and there will be an unstoppable electricity supply as well as water supply in the Smart Farm with a plan for irrigation as well as adequate security.

“As you can see, we have commenced the perimeter fencing of the whole farm area; while the central warehouse for the farmers is already constructed above lintel level,” Nnaji said.

  • Tinubu’s reforms comparable to Lee Kwan Yuan’s Successful transformational policies in Singapore -IMPI

Tinubu’s reforms comparable to Lee Kwan Yuan’s Successful transformational policies in Singapore -IMPI

    By Danladi Ahmed

The Independent Media and Policy Initiative (IMPI) has compared the economic policies of the President Bola Tinubu administration to the economic reforms that transformed Singapore, Malaysia and Rwanda to modern, market-driven economies.

The only difference, according to the policy think tank, is that President Tinubu has been carrying out reforms in a multi-party democracy that guarantees the rights of the opposition parties.

In a policy statement signed by its Chairman Dr Omoniyi Akinsiju, IMPI argued that inspite of outrage against the reforms in some quarters, the Tinubu administration is condemned to stay the course in national interest.

“Expectedly, we have witnessed many events and instances of outrage against the reforms even though many Nigerians in public are delighted to eulogise the reforms that transformed economies of countries like Singapore, Malaysia, and Rwanda into modern-day market-driven economies.

“This is without considering how long it took those economies to attain their current status under their respective reformist champion.

“It took Lee Kuan Yew, for instance, the first seven years of implementing his reform agenda plus the banishment of opposition politics before there was any indication of the envisaged economic character his reforms set out to accomplish.

“Under Paul Kagame, Rwanda is still a going concern regarding economic reforms, which he commenced in the vastly agrarian country about 25 years ago. Again, like Singapore, opposition politics is not tolerated in the East-Central African country.

“In this way, we urge President Bola Tinubu to stay the course of the reforms because we are sanguine about their impactful outcomes and potential to elevate Nigeria’s economic standing,” iMPI added.

The policy group is of the view that President Tinubu deserves credit for going ahead with the reforms inspite of the political risks involved in the opposition capitalizing on the attendant pains to drive its agenda.

It said: “Despite these challenges, we commend President Tinubu for his steadfast commitment to advancing economic reforms amid substantial opposition over the past 22 months.

“The administration has demonstrated a dedication to its reform agenda despite the lack of immediate incentives for engaging in long-term change, which is characteristic of developing nations. This requires significant statesmanship and leadership, akin to navigating uncharted territories.

“Against evident resistance to economic reforms, President Tinubu has shown exceptional perseverance, driven by a forward-looking vision for Nigeria’s economy that prioritises national interest over personal or electoral gains.

“This commitment is particularly notable considering the conventional approach of starting reforms with minor and more manageable steps to build success stories and political support.

“Reforms are typically categorised into first-generation reforms, focusing on macroeconomic stabilisation and liberalisation, and second-generation reforms, which deal with institutional changes and public service improvements.

“But the Tinubu administration has embarked on first- and second-generation reforms simultaneously, demonstrating its comprehensive engagement with economic reformation.”

The policy think tank also provided some insights into the nature of the Tinubu reforms as well as the outcome even before the administration’s mid term.

“Despite the political opposition and other sundry interest groups sniping at the reform implementation, our impact analysis implicates an emerging and truly liberalised economy, which is an accomplishment of the primary objective of the reform agenda.

“This is exemplified in Nigeria’s total trade exports, which surged to a high of $50.4 billion in 2024, driven by exchange rate depreciation due to the harmonization of foreign exchange windows and the elimination of fuel subsidies, the two flagship foundational policies of the reform agenda.

“Data from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) show that Nigeria recorded a total trade volume of N138 trillion, the highest in the country’s history, representing a 106 per cent increase compared to the previous year. This translates to $89.9 billion in dollar terms, indicating a 22.1 per cent surge in 2024 when dollarised. It also rebounded from the 35 per cent decline in 2023 when the government introduced the more market-driven exchange rate.

“Under the facilitation of the Tinubu administration, Nigeria is redeeming its image in the perception of foreign investors. Over the years, concerned investment experts lamented that it is a tragedy that a country of more than 220 million people has been unable to attract more than $2 billion worth of net Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) inflows annually in recent years.

“This is changing: when foreign investment inflow into the country in 2024 is finally tallied, Nigeria may have received about $21 billion worth of foreign investment, with only the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation Limited (NNPCL) attracting $17 billion.

“Also, total FAAC allocations jumped to N15.26tn in 2024, a 43% increase from the previous year. Again, the surge can be attributed to the Tinubu administration’s fiscal reforms, including removing fuel subsidies and exchange rate adjustments, significantly boosting oil revenue remittances,” it explained.

IMPI is however concerned that inspite of falling food prices, the agriculture sector has continued to record distorted growth in the last five years, slumping from 3.42 percent in 2020 to 1.74 percent in 2024.

It expressed hope that recapitalization of the Bank of Agriculture (BOA) and the recently sealed Green Imperative Project (GIP) deal with Brazil, targeting small scale farmers across the 774 local government areas will help boost growth in the sector

Trump says ‘not joking’ about possible third term as US president: NBC

    by AFP

Donald Trump on Sunday repeated his suggestion that he might seek a third term as US president, NBC News reported, which would defy the two-term limit stipulated in the US constitution.

In a Sunday-morning phone call with NBC News, Trump said “I’m not joking,” when asked to clarify a remark on seeking another term, adding: “There are methods which you could do it.”

The 78-year-old billionaire has a history of suggesting he might serve more than two terms, but Sunday’s remarks were the most concrete in terms of referring to plans to achieve the goal.

Trump has launched his second presidency with an unprecedented blitz of executive power, using the world’s richest man, Elon Musk, to dismantle swaths of the government, and said his supporters want even more.

“A lot of people want me to do it,” Trump told NBC News on Sunday. “But, I mean, I basically tell them we have a long way to go, you know, it’s very early in the administration.”

Amending the US constitution to allow a third presidential term would require a two-thirds majority in both the House and Senate, which Trump’s Republican Party does not have.

Trump said it was “far too early to think about it,” but told NBC he had been presented with plans that would allow him to seek reelection.

When NBC asked Trump of a possible scenario whereby Vice President JD Vance would run for president and then abdicate the role to Trump, the US president said “that’s one” method.

He added that “there are others,” but refused to share further details.

If Trump does not approach Congress for the constitutional amendment, he would need to get support from two-thirds of the country’s 50 states to call a constitutional convention that would propose changes to the charter.

Whether he goes through Congress or the states, he would then require ratification from three-quarters of all states.

Both routes appear to be unlikely, given the current number of states and Congressional seats under Republican control.

A constitutional convention has never been successfully called in the United States, where all 27 constitutional amendments have been passed by the congressional method.

In January, days after Trump took office, Republican Andy Ogles of Tennessee introduced a House joint resolution to amend the constitution to allow presidents up to three terms.

82 Division Chief Imam tasks Nigerians on support for constituted authorities

    By Flowerbudnews

The Chief Imam of 82 Division of the Nigerian Army, Lt.-Col. Husein Eleje, has tasked Nigerians on support and respect for constituted authorities for the country to make sustainable progress.

Eleje gave the task on Sunday at the Abakpa Military Cantonment Eid Prayer Ground, Enugu, where Enugu State Muslim faithful held their Eid Prayers making the end of the Ramadan fasting for Muslims worldwide.

He noted that every true Nigerian owes constituted authorities “total diligence and obedience” both in words, actions and in our daily prayers for their success.

The cleric said, “Being obedient means being eager to work with them and show them full support as well as compliance to rules governing the country.

“The constitution is for the leaders and the lead; we should be able to carry out the task given to us or those suppose to be done by us as the lead, since they (leaders) cannot work alone or make huge progress on their own.

“The leaders most times depend on the lead. The society is structured in form of a “pyramidic order”, where we have few leaders at the apex and vast majority of the lead at lower strata of the pyramid.

“Looking at the society from a pyramidic order, you see that the President cannot do much if he does not have support and buy-in of most Nigerians to implement programmes and succeed in them all.”

The chief imam urged Nigerians to work selflessly for the good and progress of the country, adding that Almighty Allah had richly blessed the country with natural and human resources to kick-out poverty and lack among Nigerians.

The cleric applauded Muslim faithful for living exemplary life-style during the Ramadan as well as daily supplication for Almighty Allah’s forgiveness, bounties and blessings upon their neighbours, communities and society.

He urged Muslims faithful to maintain all good traits and attitudes imbibed during Ramadan and continue to live peacefully with their neighbors and extend acts of charity and love to others.

“We should develop the spirit of brotherhood and live as one entity as well as ‘be our brother’s keep’ to make things work smoothly within our neighbourhoods, communities and society at large,” he added.

In the course of the prayers, Eleje prayed for protection and success of the armed forces especially Nigerian Army troops and in their various theatres of operations within and outside the country.

He prayed for divine wisdom, protection and direction for the Commander-in-Chief, President Bola Tinubu; the Chief of Defense Staff, Gen. Christopher Musa; the Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Olufemi Oluyede; the General Officer Commanding of 82 Division, Maj.-Gen. Oluyemi Olatoye and other commanders.
