Minister inaugurates electricity project in Enugu community, pledges more people-oriented projects

    By Flowerbudnews

The Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, Chief Uche Nnaji, has inaugurated a state-of-the-art electricity project in Onu-Orie, Obuno Autonomous Community in Akpugo within Nkanu West Local Government Area of Enugu State.

Inaugurating the multi-million naira electricity project executed by a leading industrialist, Dr Basil Ogbuanu, at the weekend, Nnaji assured the people of the community of more people-oriented projects.

Nnaji noted that he would attract more human capital development projects in terms of employment to complement the existing ones he had attracted to the Akpugo axis of the state, which included the Obuno autonomous community.

According to him, I do not have money to give, but I can provide human capital development, infrastructure and projects that will impact the people as I have already given more than 100 people from Akpugo axis employment.

He said, “I will encourage our people to keep supporting all Federal Government programmes and policies, always designed to make life easier, better and safer for them.

“I want to thank Dr Basil Ogbuanu, Chairman of Second Coming Nigeria Limited, for this 300 KVA transformer, energizing it and doing electricity reticulation of the entire community.

“I want to encourage other wealthy and philanthropic individuals to emulate him as this is a vital support/complement not only to the people but to the government as well in order to hasten up development of the community.”

The minister said that he had noted the complaint of lack of government presence in the community, adding that he would see what he would do to open up major access roads of the community and bring human capital development.

Earlier, Ogbuanu, who is also a Pastor with Mountain of Fire and Miracles Ministries, said that he was motivated to embark on the project to make “an impact in the lives of his people since we are all pilgrims”.

“I want to make impacts and so that when I leave, I will be remembered by the impacts I have made. Not just on building amenities but on the number of lives those amenities touched and changed their socioeconomic status.

“The project will lighten-up all homes in Onu Orie Obuno and provide needed constant electricity for artisans and craftsmen to be meaningfully engaged as well as make a living and be comfortable residing here.

“It is a way of paying back to the society (now my community), as God has blessed and given me grace to excel to the height He placed me today,” he said.

Ogbuanu, who did not disclose the cost of the project, noted that “it is purely for my people and what my people have given to me before now cannot be quantified”.

He called for government presence in the community and the government ensuring that quality education is given to all in order to bridge the gap between the children of the rich and poor.

The Vice Chairman of the community, Chief Chijioke Nwobodo, said that electrification would open up the community commercially as more people would want to open shops and invest in the community.

Nwobodo appreciated Ogbuanu for the gesture as well as the fortune he must have spent to fix electricity in the community and making life more meaningful to the people of the community.

“I will appeal to the Honourable Minister to use his good office to wipe away our tears due to the age of neglect by bringing viable and people-impactful projects and programmes to this community,” the vice chairman said.

The Traditional Ruler of Obuno, Akpugo, Igwe Jacob Nwatu, thanked Ogbuanu for the gesture and personal concern for the welfare and well-being of the people of the community.

“Ogbuanu is a source of inspiration and someone that keeps ensuring that good things of life come the way of our people. Just some years ago, he installed solar-powered streetlights and gave scholarships in the community,” Nwatu said.

A youth in the community, Mr Collins Ani, appreciated Ogbuanu for the gesture and making the community comfortable for youths to carry out their business enterprises such as welding, barbing, relaxation points and cold room among others.

High-points of the event were the observation of a minute silence for the departed chairman of the community; and Ogbuanu awarding the demised chairman’s first son scholarship to university level.

NAFDAC Ends 2024 on High Note, destroys Fake Products Worth N120bn in 6 Months

(NAFDAC Director General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye)

    By Biola Lawal

FLOWERBUDNEWS:  The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, NAFDAC has recorded major successes against counterfeiters across the country, destroying fake products etc, worth N120 billion in the in last six months of 2024.

(NAFDAC operatives in action during one of the successful enforcement operations)

The Director General of NAFDAC, Prof Mojisola Adeyeye, who announced the operational success in her Christmas/ New Year message to Nigerians, warned counterfeiters and peddlers of fake drugs etc, that NAFDAC would make year 2025 tougher on them.

”The coming year will be tough for the people that prioritize money over the wellbeing of their fellow human beings by compromising quality of medicines and food products in the country’, she vowed.

(Prof. Adeyeye physically glad at the incredible successes being recorded by NAFDAC operatives)

Prof. Adeyeye declared that the Agency would not rest on its oars ”until the merchants of death are forced out of operation”, warning that the Agency would make it hard for them to operate freely and endanger the health of innocent consumers, especially in the coming year.

Sayo Akintola, NAFDAC  Resident Media Consultant disclosed this in a statement on Sunday, a copy of which was made available to Flowerbudnews.

(Some of the unwholesome regulated products impounded for destruction)

Prof. Adeyeye assured Nigerians that adequate measures have been put in place to safeguard their health before, during and after the yuletide season.

On the successful NAFDAC operations in the country’s six Geo-political Zones and FCT, Prof Adeyeye, disclosed that officers of the agency’s Investigation and Enforcement Directorate (I&E) would continue the ongoing mop up of substandard and falsified medicines and unwholesome food items from the markets across the country.

(NAFDAC operatives in action in another enforcement raid)

”Officials of the Agency’s Investigation and Enforcement Directorate (I&E), Pharmacovigilance (PV) Directorate and Post-Marketing Surveillance (PMS) Directorate are jointly on the field mopping up falsified medicines, fake wines and drinks and unwholesome food products that could endanger the health of the people during the festive season,” She disclosed.

The Agency had stormed supermarkets in the big cities across the country such as Lagos, Port Harcourt, Aba, Ibadan, Kaduna, and the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, to apprehend manufacturers and merchants of fake drugs and unwholesome foods, while products running into billions of Naira had been confiscated in the last three months of renewed enforcement.

(Talking, explaining – Prof. Adeyeye sensitizing local and international publics on efforts of NAFDAC to enhance confidence)

On Wednesday, December 11, 2024, the Agency destroyed expired, unregistered drugs worth N11 billion in Ibadan, Oyo State. In November, the Agency seized N300m worth of fake medicines during a raid of Tyre Village, Trade Fair Complex, Lagos State.

Officers of the Agency also burst counterfeit alcohol packaging centres and seized items worth N2billion in Lagos. This followed reports of illegal revalidation of expired alcoholic beverages at the Trade Fair Complex in Lagos.

The war against substandard and falsified medicines and unwholesome food and drinks moved to Nasarawa State where officers of the Agency, led by the Director of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT Directorate, Mr Kenneth Azikiwe stormed the Karu market situated at the border between FCT and Nasarawa State where bags of repackaged expired rice were confiscated by the Agency. Products worth about N5 billion were seized during the raid.

Also, in Nasarawa state, the Agency sealed a factory and eight shops for packaging and distributing counterfeit rice, valued at approximately ₦5 billion. The operation, conducted on December 19, targeted a facility named Ninjur Ventures on Abacha Road, Karu.

It would seem as though these merchants of substandard and fake products are seizing the opportunity of the anticipated high level of consumer purchases and consumption during the yuletide.

At Wuse and Garki markets in Abuja last Friday the agency confiscated over 1,600 bags of counterfeit rice worth about N5 billion where counterfeit rice was being repackaged in branded bags.

Prof Adeyeye maintained that only safe, quality, and wholesome food products should be available to Nigerians during the yuletide and beyond. She specifically instructed that those counterfeiting popular brands of rice should be arrested and their products removed from the market.

Simultaneously, a total of 150 shops at Eziukwu Market in Aba, a suburb of Abia State, were shut down following an operation by the Agency.

As the mop-up operation was going on in the FCT and Nasarawa State, NAFDAC was carrying out a two-day operation in the Aba market on December 16 and 17, 2024.

During the operation, the agency uncovered large-scale production and distribution of fake and expired goods including beverages, carbonated drinks, wines, spirits, vegetable oils, and revalidated food items such as noodles, powdered milk, and yoghurt with a market value of N5bn.

The Agency on Wednesday, December 11, 2024, also destroyed expired, unregistered, counterfeit, and smuggled products valued at ₦10,991,458,374.60.

The destroyed items, collected from five states in the Southwest Zone (excluding Lagos) and Kwara State in the North Central Zone due to its proximity, were incinerated in Ibadan.

In total, over N120bn worth of seized products were destroyed by the Agency in six months (July-December) in the six geo-political zones and FCT.

She reiterated the need for Nigerians to always procure food and drinks in outlets with identifiable addresses and locations to ease the Agency’s track and trace obligation.

Prof. Adeyeye said that medicines and packaged food products that do not have NAFDAC number should be avoided. ‘’And when a product is too cheap, it’s most likely to be compromised.’’

She urged consumers to consistently scrutinise medicines and branded drinks carefully to distinguish genuine products from counterfeits before consumption. “NAFDAC wishes to advise that the members of the public should be vigilant during this yuletide season.

‘’We are using this medium to appeal to Nigerians to buy only NAFDAC registered drinks from reputable and licenced retailers, bars and supermarkets. If the product is being sold well below its normal price, or doesn’t seem to include normal taxes on liquors, then it is probably fake. Check for poor quality packaging, spelling mistakes and unusually shaped bottles,’’ she said.

“Healthcare professionals and consumers are advised to report any suspicion of substandard and falsified medicines or food to the nearest NAFDAC office, call 0800-162-3322 or send an email to sf.alert@nafdac.gov.ng. (FLOWERBUDNEWS)

BREAKING: 85 killed, others injured as plane with 181 on board crashes, bursts into flames after landing

At least 85 people have been killed when a passenger plane caught fire after skidding off a runway and crashing at an airport in South Korea’s Muan city, the country’s National Fire Agency said.

The accident occurred on Sunday at 9.03am local time (00:03 GMT) as the Jeju Air flight, carrying 175 passengers and six crew from the Thai capital Bangkok, was landing at Muan International Airport in the southwest of the country.

The National Fire Agency confirmed that 85 people – 46 women and 39 men – have been killed, and the fire that engulfed the plane has been extinguished.

Citing fire agency officials, South Korea’s Yonhap news agency said that hopes are fading for survivors.

Al Jazeera’s Rob McBride, reporting from Seoul in South Korea, said a major rescue operation was under way at the airport, which is located about 289km (179 miles) southwest of the capital.

“This was a flight returning overnight from Bangkok. There seems to have been some kind of malfunction with the landing gear and images which have been on the media here do appear to show the plane landing on its belly, skidding along the runway, followed then by a huge explosion,” McBride said.

“Eyewitness accounts have talked then about a series of explosions and certainly images that we have been seeing have shown a catastrophic fire,” he said.

The plane, a Boeing 737-800 jet, was reported to be carrying two Thai passengers and the rest were believed to be South Koreans.

One photo shared by local media showed thick clouds of black smoke coming out of the plane. Another showed the tail section of the jet engulfed in flames on what appeared to be the side of the runway, with firefighters and emergency vehicles nearby.

The Yonhap news agency reports that the crash is believed to have been caused by “contact with birds, resulting in malfunctioning landing gear” as the plane attempted to land at the airport.

The country’s News1 agency reported that a passenger texted a relative to say a bird was stuck in the wing. The person’s final message was, “Should I say my last words?”

An official from South Korea’s Transport Ministry’s aviation department said a bird strike was among several theories for the accident that have not been verified and that an investigation was ongoing.

South Korea’s Acting President Choi Sang-mok, meanwhile, ordered “all-out efforts for rescue operations” at Muan airport.

“All related agencies… must mobilise all available resources to save the personnel,” he told officials in a statement.

Jeju Air, one of South Korea’s largest low-cost carriers, which was set up in 2005, issued an apology for the crash, saying it would “do everything in our power in response to this accident”.

The crash is the first fatal accident for Jeju Air, though in August 2007, a Bombardier Q400 operated by the airline and carrying 74 passengers came off the runway due to strong winds at the southern Busan-Gimhae airport, resulting in a dozen injuries.

Experts say that South Korea’s aviation industry has a solid track record for safety. (SOURCE: AL JAZEERA AND NEWS AGENCIES, excluding headline)

WASA: Nigerian Army urges personnel to redouble efforts, be exemplary

    By Flowerbudnews
The Nigerian Army has urged its personnel to redouble their efforts in combating insurgency, terrorism and all forms of heinous crimes in the country in 2025.

The Special Guest of Honour to 103 Battalion Awukunanaw 2024 West Africa Social Activities (WASA), Maj.-Gen. Tagbo Ude (retired), said this in a remark during WASA to mark end of 2024 Operational Year for the Battalion at its Awukunanaw Barracks in Enugu.

Ude noted that the Nigerian Army and indeed the Battalion recorded mile stone successes in the discharge of their constitutional duties in 2024 “but there is room for further improvement.”

According to him, as a matter of fact, the officers and men of the Nigerian army have really given so much to the defense of our fatherland; they have participated in external and internal operations.

He said, “In most cases, officers and men stay very far away from their beloved families and loved ones.

“For the South-East, which I can confidently talk about, the Nigerian Army troops, which included troops of this Battalion, have performed exceptionally well in the fight against unscrupulous elements among us especially in Enugu State.

“While commending your efforts, I urge you (officers and men) to be exemplary, compassionate and empathic in the conduct of these operations.

“You should always strive for excellence in the discharge of your constitutional responsibility,” he said.

On the WASA, Ude said that it was an old heritage and event of the Nigerian Army that brings its personnel, their families, friends and well-wishers together and creates needed bonding.

He thanked the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt.-Gen. Olufemi Oluyede, for inviting him as a special guest of honour and giving him the opportunity to make remarks at the event.

Earlier, the Commanding Officer of 103 Battalion Awukunanaw, Lt.-Col. Waheed Shittu, said that WASA provided an opportunity for officers, soldiers and their families and friends to meet in a convivial environment to share love and understanding.

He said that the event also provided an avenue to appreciate, honour and reward officers and soldiers that had performed exceptionally well in the outgoing Nigerian Army calendar year.

“I want to commend the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt.-Gen. Olufemi Oluyede, for the approval to host this WASA and its funding.

“I will appreciate the General Officer Command (GOC) of 82 Division of the Nigerian Army, Maj.-Gen. Hassan Dada, for his fatherly guidance throughout the operational year.

“I want to assure the COAS and GOC that the Battalion is ready to carry out any assigned task; while remaining loyal to constituted authorities,” he said.

The event featured various cultural cuisines and dance displays as well as masquerade parade, tug-of-war, special renditions and a bonfire.

The battalion also recognised and honoured seven exceptional personnel in its 2024 operational year with awards.

  • Oyeweso-Led Council and the Renaissance at OAU, Ife

Oyeweso-Led Council and the Renaissance at OAU, Ife

    By Tunde Akanni (PhD)

So soon after being inaugurated by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, duty beckoned for Professor Siyan Abdul Ghafar Oyeweso at the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife, Osun State. The horizon blazed forth the shiny future in sync with the global proclamation gender activists that the future is female.

Exemplifying instances played out thus: At the first convocation he presided over as the Chair of the University Council and Pro –Chancellor, a female pharmacy graduate, Susan Akinyuwa, emerged as the overall best. She earned 4.97 out of a total 5.0 GP.

It’s just the flickers of the future that Professor Siyan Gafar Oyeweso and the rest council members as well as the management and the staff of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife are envisioning. From the supply side, more like a long term investment, long forgotten, suddenly sprouting dividends, Nigeria’s First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, graciously scooped out a whopping N1billion on Obafemi Awolowo University, OAU, for the comprehensive renewal of the landscape of the university that used to be reputable as the most beautiful in Africa.

It was her own alma mater too, now endowed with a reliable leadership. It is a leadership characterised by scholarly distinction and one with a trajectory dating back to years of Lagos bond with Nigeria’s first family.

Till date, Oyeweso, remains the personality historian to be beaten on such Lagos achievers including the legendary businessman and nature conservationist, Chief SL Edu and of course the author of what has come to be known as New Lagos, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Believing so much in Tinubu, Oyeweso’s two distinct analytical volumes of landmark speeches of former Governor Tinubu remains the inimitable sources of primary data on the political vision of the President now playing out.

Yet, there was no iota of the likelihood of any shot at the presidency then. But the historian in Oyeweso has manifested the kind of precision that can only matched by data scientist often aided by programmed machines. The new team lead at OAU, Oyeweso, has been so unequivocal, even at the risk of being expressly repetitive, declaring his strong intent to bring back the enviable glory of the world class institution dating back to those years the university nurtured him and others to be the best in their respective realms of practice.

A first class history graduate of the then University of Ife, Oyeweso believes so strongly that OAU, his alma mater, cannot, under whatever consideration, be made to be co-habit in the same bracket with low performing or struggling institutions.

Oyeweso’s speech at the inaugural meeting of the council he is leading is as declaratory as it is retrospective: “We pledge our unflinching commitment to the educational agenda of BAT’s Administration.

We promise to deliver and we will not fail him… We are here today as co-inheritors of a wonderful heritage that has contributed significantly to our lives and career. I am happy to be here today as friend, partner, and son. I was sired, nurtured and bred here. But today, I am here with you to give back to this Great University all that we can give to ensure a more enduring and vibrant institution. We shall do this together in peace and harmony by the grace of God Almighty.

When I entered this university in 1978, I came in with so much joy in my heart and an unusual glint in my eyes, for being counted worthy to come and study in Africa’s most beautiful university campus. But that was not the only reason. By then, Ife products had become famous and vibrant. They showed great elan in whatever they were doing. We wanted to be counted amongst the lot.

”The lull suffered by the entire education sector in Nigeria over time notwithstanding, OAU, according to Oyeweso has remained a most outstanding training hub for ICT in Nigeria even as he acknowledges the innovative drive of the Faculty of Social Science. In a most convincing demonstration of his familiarity with the situation on the campus of OAU,

Oyeweso notes the degeneracy of the hygiene and sanitation in particular. According to him, unlike the good old days characterised by ample water production and supplies all around the campus from a major source, boreholes are now sunk arbitrarily everywhere rendering the campus to possibility of tremor and allied disasters that may derive from such reckless abuse of nature. Many of the roads too are pothole ridden fall easily to torrents of rainfall making them impassable.

For him, universities like OAU, have daunting problems not only because owner governments fail in their duties but because policy implementors too engage either inadequately or wrongly with issues.Obviously guided by his robust experiential assets as a scholar of distinction and administrator with varied exposure, he undertakes a thorough and didactic analysis of the university with a sense great deftness and concludes with relevant solutionist suggestions. Understandably anchored on his background as a historian, Oyeweso alerts the council to the existential need for proper grounding of the citadel of knowledge on truthful and well researched knowledge of its establishment and operations till date: “The University needs an official history of its existence and achievements from inception to date. We must build on the existing publications of Great Ife at 25 (1987) and Great Ife at 60 (2021).

‘:We need to agree on the date to adopt for our university between the date of legal establishment (June 1961) and date of formal opening (October 1962). Celebrating Great Ife @ 10 in 1972, Great Ife @ 25 in 1987, Great Ife @ 50 in 2012 and Great Ife @ 60 in 2021 are not only bemusing but also confusing and misleading to say the least.

The Department of History of the University must be mainstreamed in any future history book project for the University just as the Department of Dramatic Arts takes the central stage in Convocation Plays and the Department of Music is charged with musical interludes at official university programmes.” Giving life to his formulations, the Oyeweso council has since constituted a 19-member high-powered Strategic Planning Committee for 2025-2050 development plan. Chaired by Council Member Barrister Joseph Abaagu, it has as members Deputy Vice-Chancellor Mujidat Babalola as well as two former vice-chancellors, Prof Olufemi Mimiko and Sola Akinrinade.

The committee has been mandated to envision the future for the university by reckoning properly with the:Will and strong determination to get things doneWillingness and readiness to access all available government resources like TETFund and Special Grants. This also requires proper utilisation of released funds and prompt retirementInviting well-meaning Nigerians starting with the Alumni located in different realms of life to renovate facilities as some old students have been doing, donate money, equipment and facilities, endow chairs and prizes and generally give towards programmes and events in the universityInviting Businessmen to invest in laudable and lucrative with the assurance of safety of their investment as well as profitabilityProperly securing the university estate against encroachment and proper utilisation of the landmass for profitable ventures.

Highly commendable in this regard is the ongoing project of fencing the university estate. It should be sustained and seen to a logical conclusion.Already, this Council is acting talk and do as Prof Oyeweso noted at the 48th convocation ceremony held December 2024 thus: the Council and Management have ensured that staff are being promoted as at when due.

We do not have backlog of promotion cases. In the same vein, Council has also prioritized student welfare. A number of student hostels have been refurbished while others are under renovation. The Management has also ensured steady power supply to all halls of residence, the Hezekiah Oluwasanmi Library and other Faculty Libraries. The Council has also put in place the necessary machinery for the rejuvenation of OAU Investment Company, OAU Guest Houses and OAU Commercial Farm.

Our goal is to ensure that the University, in partnership with credible organizations embark on mechanized farming.” For OAU therefore, the shape of the future is almost obvious as the morning sets the tone of the day.Tunde Akanni is an Associate Professor of Journalism at the Lagos State University.

Group backs FG cashless policy, urges upgrade of cashless technology

    By Flowerbudnews
De Norsemen Kclub International (DNKI), a global humanitarian organisation, has backed the Federal Government’s cashless policy, while urging deployment and upgrade of cashless technology to make the policy seamless.

This is contained in a communiqué issued by the organization on Saturday in Enugu after its 16th International Converge in Abuja, between Dec.13 and Dec.15, 2024.

The communiqué said that the humanitarian organisation agreed with the Federal Government that the policy would reduce crime and the circulation of fake currency notes.

According to the statement, however, the government should deploy and upgrade any technology that can make the implementation of the policy hitch-free/seamless in order to erase the suffering it placed on Nigerians particularly with the current cash crunch.

It called on the government to mitigate the hardships faced by the masses, noting that the suffering in the land occasioned by the removal of fuel subsidy had spread frustration thereby causing humanitarian problems.

(Chief Chidi Anokwu, International President, DNKI)

“Delegates called on the government to review its economic policies and make them people-focused and masses friendly, noting that the government can only govern the living, not dead citizens.

“DNKI expressed worry over the level of insecurity in the land, highlighting that no part of the country is in the real sense, safe at the moment.

“It noted that no meaningful socioeconomic and political activities could thrive when citizens live in an atmosphere of fear and uncertainty.

“It, therefore, advised the government to prioritise security of life and property,” it said.

It encouraged members of the organization to remain industrious, creative, patriotic, disciplined and law-abiding anywhere they find themselves, adding that members to intensify their involvement in humanitarian service which is the foundation of the organization.

“The organization charges members to be responsible family men and commit adequate time and resources to their families as a stable and progressive family makes a stable and progressive nation.

“It also tasked members to be conscious of their health and go for regular medical checks; while identifying regular exercise as a way of maintaining good health and living a meaningful life,” it added.

The two-page communiqué was signed by acting International Publicity Secretary of DNKI, Mr Isidore Agughasi.

It would be recalled that the organization, led by its International President, Chief Chidi Anokwu, had international chapters in 57 countries and chapters in 36 states of Nigeria as well as the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.

Despite his short formal education, he joined the Ibadan Writers Elite- the Mbari Mbayo Club of Ulli Beier and Wole Soyinka. He was the author of the popular book “The Palm-wine Drunkard” in 1952.

Ibadan Firsts The University of Ife, now Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, founded in 1962, started from the present North Campus of the Ibadan Polytechnic, then known as the Nigerian College of Arts and Science. It took its first set of 244 students on the 22nd of September 1962, with five faculties; – Agriculture, Arts, Economics, Social Studies (now Social Sciences), and Law. The university resided in Ibadan until January 1968, when it finally relocated to its new permanent Campus in Ile-Ife. It’s first Vice Chancellor was Professor Oladele Ajose, succeeded in 1966 by Professor Hezekiah Oluwasanmi, a University of Ibadan Agricultural Economist.

    ADEKUNLE FAJUYI
In recognition of Governor Adekunle Fajuyi’s efforts, in the early relocation of the University to Ile-Ife, (when he was the then governor of the Western region), the first male hostel- Fajuyi Hall, was named after him.

Ibadan in its early life, had served as the Administrative centre and capital of the Western Region since 1949. In fact, the first General Conference, to fashion out a new constitution for Nigeria, was held in Ibadan between January 9th and 30th of 1950.

IBADAN, NIGERIA’S HOME OF MANY FIRSTS
Ibadan became the home of many firsts, due to the progressive governance, political wizardry and economic sagacity of the Awolowo led Action Group-
    – the first television station in Africa on the 31st of October 1959,
    – the first stadium-the liberty stadium, patterned after the popular Wembley Stadium in London. This 25,000 capacity seat football stadium and the first stadium to be built in Africa, was officially opened in 1960, and also built during Awolowo’s tenure as the Premier of the Western Region. It was officially renamed the Obafemi Awolowo stadium on the 12th November 2010 by the then President Goodluck Jonathan, during a courtesy visit to the late sage widow; Mama HID Awolowo.
    – Amongst the firsts also, is the popular 24 storey sky scraper- the Cocoa House,
    – the first dualised road in Nigeria- named The Queen Elizabeth road, from Mokola to Agodi Secretariat, officially declared open, by the visiting Queen Elizabeth II in 1956 and also the popular University College Hospital (U.C.H) , the first teaching hospital in Nigeria, patterned after the University of London Teaching Hospital (ULTH), was also officially commissioned by the Queen, during this historic visit to Nigeria in 1956.
    – It is equally important to remember the first Re-diffusion in Nigeria; the one channel Radio Station,
    – the Agodi Government Secretariat being, the first in Nigeria and the first Modern Parliament that housed the Regional House of Assembly and the House of Chiefs.
    – The first Housing Estate in Nigeria- the Bodija Housing Estate was also built and developed in 1958.
    – Ibadan also had the first highly organized and structured Civil Service in Nigeria, with the Simeon Adebos, Saburi Biobakus, as its founding lights.
    – The free education programme of the Awolowo government, the first in Nigeria, was launched in Ibadan, in 1954.
    – As a honeypot, Ibadan became the home of the first set of Research and Training institutes in Nigeria; – –

The Forestry Research Institute (1930), the Idi-Ayunre

    Cocoa Research Institute (CRIN),

The Nigerian Cereal Research Institute Moor Plantation (NCRI),

the NIHORT (Nigerian Institute of Horticultural Research),

the NISER (Nigerian Institute of Social and Economic Research),

IAR&T (Institute of Agriculture, Research and Training), amongst several others.

    OLUSEGUN OBASANJO
Ibadan made people and moulded characters. Olusegun Obasanjo, from his teaching desk at the African Church Modern School, Ago Tailor, Odo-Ona Ibadan in 1957, where he taught General Science and Religious knowledge from Modern 1-3, he took the Cadetship examination into the Nigerian Army and passed, and enlisted formalities concluded in March 1958. Obasanjo came back to Ibadan almost 10 years thereafter, as the Commander of the Second Area command of the Nigerian Army Ibadan and an automatic member of the State Executive Council of the then Brigadier Robert Adeyinka Adebayo’s government in the Western Region. Obasanjo in Ibadan, began to interact with the Ibadan elites, lecturers and administrators, most especially from the University of Ibadan through the Town and Gown forum- a forum of interaction between the University of Ibadan and the community.
He also interacted with other sectors of the community, like the Political, Business and Cultural sectors of the community.

    UKPABI ASIKA
It was from these interactions, that he consummated the friendships of many Ibadan intellectuals. It was Professor J.F Ade Ajayi, on the request of Olusegun Obasanjo, that scouted for Anthony Ukpabi Asika, a 31 year old radical teacher of Political Science at the University of Ibadan, to be made the Civilian Administrator of East Central State of Nigeria on the 29th of October 1967.

    CHIEF GABRIEL IGBINEDION
Chief Gabriel Osawarun Igbinedion, now the Esama of Benin, was once a young Police Officer in Ibadan in the 1950s.

    MKO ABIOLA
Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola, in 1956, started his working life as a Bank clerk with the Barclays Bank Plc. Dugbe, Ibadan. After two years as a Bank Clerk, he joined Western Region Finance Corporation, as an Executive Account Officer, before leaving for Glasgow University Scotland, to pursue his higher education, on the Western Region of Nigeria scholarship. He received a first class degree in Accounting and also had a distinction from the Institute of Chartered Accountant of Scotland. He was at a later time in his life, conferred with the Chieftaincy title of Bashorun of Ibadan land.

    SPOUSAL RELATIONSHIPS
    In Ibadan, future spousal relationships strived, most especially within the University Community;
    Laide and Wole Soyinka,
    Ayo and Adetoun Ogunseye,
    Ojetunji and Bimpe Aboyede,
Chinua and Christy Achebe, Olumuyiwa and Bolanle Awe, Yetunde Oyebode, daughter of Late Bishop Oyebode and Okunade Sijuwade, later Ooni of Ife, Christopher Okigbo and Judith Safinat Attah,
Adepoju and Aderenle Taiwo, Olusegun and Funke Agagu, amongst several others.

GENERAL YAKUBU GOWON Interestingly, Major General Yakubu Gowon succeeded General Agunyi Ironsi as Head of State of Nigeria, on the 1st of August 1966 as a result of the Coup d’état of July 29 1966, when he was just 32 years old and a bachelor. To change from the status of a bachelor Head of State, he got his legal spouse in Ibadan,- A University College Hospital (UCH) Ibadan trained nurse; Miss Victoria Zakari, whom he married in April 1969, with Navy Commodore Akinwale Wey, the Chief of Staff, Supreme Military Council as his best man at the marriage.

Ibadan University Town and Gown relationship blossomed with the Mbari Mbayo club founded by Professor Ulli Beier, a German, who came to Ibadan as a lecturer in 1956, Wole Soyinka, Christopher Okigbo, Duro Ladipo, Kola Ogunmola, Amos Tutuola, and so many others. Also, the Players of the Ibadan Dawn Group of Olusegun Olusola and Christopher Kolade was also formed in 1958-1959, when the first Television station in Africa, W.N.T.V was being opened.

DEATH OF AGUIYI IRONSI AND ADEKUNLE FAJUYI
On July 28th 1966, General Aguiyi Ironsi as Head of State, addressed a meeting of traditional rulers from all over the country in Ibadan. He planned to return to Lagos after his address, but choose to pass the night at the Government House with his host- Colonel Adekunle Fajuyi, the Governor of the Western Region. There was a post conference dinner held in honour of the Traditional rulers who attended the conference. The conference was held principally to rally support for the Ironsi Unification Decree number 34 of May 1966, which merged the country into a unitary entity. It was his last official assignment as the Supreme Military Commander and Head of State. In the midnight, Captain T. Yakubu Danjuma, the officer detailed to provide protection for the Supreme Military Commander in Ibadan, turned out to be the officer who led the Mutineers to kill his boss- Ironsi and his host- Adekunle Fajuyi. After their arrest, Colonel Adekunle Fajuyi, being a good host and a thorough bred Yoruba man, insisted that he should be picked alongside the visiting Head of State. They were moved to Lalupon, a community in Ibadan, on Iwo road, where they were killed and buried in shallow graves. Lieutenant colonel Hillary Njoku, ADC to the Supreme commander, however managed to escape. The leaders of the July 29 1966 putsch, included Major Muritala Mohammed, Major Abba Kyari, Captain T. Yakubu Danjuma, Major Martin Adamu, and Major Joe Akahan.

    THE CONTRADICTIONS
    Ibadan also has its contradictions.
It was the home of the Agbekoyas who resented the new tax regime of Brigadier Adeyinka Adebayo in November 1968. The Governor increased taxable adult tax from £1pound, 17 shillings, 6pence to £8 pounds. The Agbekoyas, resented and protested against this arbitrary increase, and on the 11th of November 1968, the Agbekoya crisis came out full blown, when thousands of agitators marched from the Mapo hall, armed with sticks, cudgels and weapons, to express their rejection of the new tax, as announced by the Governor. A combined team of Policemen and Soldiers opened fire on the demonstrators in Mapo, killing about 20 people. The agitators soon spread to other parts of the Western Region. The Agbekoya group was led by Mr. Tafa Adeoye, renowned farmer/hunter from Akanran, in Ibadan. The government effort to arrest Tafa Adeoye, the strongman leader of the Agbekoya, who was reputed to be all charms, was only made possible through a pretty police detective, who was detailed to carry out intelligence surveillance on Tafa Adeoye. The lady, approached the leader of the Agbekoya group for a relationship. Tafa fell in love with her and “Married” her. The trap was successful. After a few weeks of the relationship of Tafa and his” wife”, plain clothes policemen, entered his residence and arrested him for the offence of organizing tax agitators against the Government.

The Ibadan business landscape, in the early days was also nurtured by the pioneering efforts of two Ijebu brothers, who were business titans, of the same parents- Adeola Odutola (1902-1995) and his brother Jimoh (1905-2010). Adeola was literate and a Christian, and Jimoh, though not literate was a self-made man, and till his death spoke impeccable English and spoke like a professor. He was a Muslim. Their father was also a Muslim, while their Mother, Sabina was a Christian. The duo went into a partnership- the Odutola Brothers. Jimoh started the first tyre factory and also the first Foam factory in West Africa, in Ibadan. Jimoh’s tyre factory in Ibadan was so successful, that he was invited by the Government of Kenya and Ghana to set up similar companies over there. He lived to a ripe age of 105 years and remained throughout his life an epitome of modesty.

Interestingly, Adeola was the father of Professor Mrs. Oyin Olurin, a doyen of Ophthalmology in Nigeria and resident in Ibadan, whilst Jimoh was also the father of Professor Mrs. Ebun Clark, a pioneer of Theater Arts in Nigeria and wife of J.P Clark who wrote the popular poem-”Ibadan”.
It will still not be easy to forget the pioneering efforts of Chief Theophilus Adediran Oni, popularly known as T.A Oni and Sons (adulterated as Oni o Suwon) in the building and construction industry in Nigeria. He was born in Oke-Mesi, Ekiti State in 1913 and died in February 1975. His company was the first indigenous construction company in Nigeria. Chief Oni’s most notable act of kindness, was willing his family estate to charity, as a clear demonstration of his high level degree of philanthropy and love for the city of Ibadan. He willed his residence- Goodwill House, to the Oyo/Western state government, to be used as a Paediatric Hospital, which is now known as T.A. Oni Memorial Children Hospital, Ring Road Ibadan. This sprawling family Estate and residence was cited on a 15acre piece of land, 65 rooms, with modern conveniences, Olympic Swimming Pool, and stable for Horses etc. Alhaja Humoani Alaga, Alhaja Humoani Alade and Madam Janet Alatede Aboderin (mother of Olu Aboderin and Ajibola Ogunsola), Alhaja Rabiatu Adedigba Akindele (mother of Chief Bode Akindele) and the first Woman to go on Holy Pilgrimage to Mecca, were also Ibadan women of great business acumen in the early days. Mama Chief HID Awolowo, was also prominent in the textile business and her textile store in Gbagi Ibadan, known as Awolowo corner, was very prominent. As resentment to non-admission of Christian girls to a girls mission school in Ibadan, Alhaja Humoani Alaga, single handedly established Isabatudeen Girls’ Grammar School Ibadan in 1964. Humoani established her textile trading business in 1928 and in 1933, she had become a successful merchant with properties in Nigeria and in the United Kingdom. The succeeding generations of the early Ibadan business titans, were the likes of Chief Bode Akindele, who single handedly, established so many factories in Ibadan-Standard Breweries, Standard Packaging, Standard Plastics, Doctor Pepper Soft Drink factory, all in Alomaja Ibadan, and also a Matches Production factory in Eleyele Ibadan. Chief Bode Amoo also established Bode Foams and Atlantic Carpets in Ajoda and Olodo Ibadan respectively. Jimoh Ibrahim Inaolaji of Ikire, Adekambi Amoo; a.k.a Ti Oluwa ni yo se A. Amao of Ibadan, Chief S.O Bakare (Oluwalogbon Motors) were also astute businessmen. Alhaji Arisekola Alao, born on the 14th of February 1945, started as a trader of insecticides (Gamalin 20), in Agodi Ibadan in 1961, and soon became a foremost Ibadan Industrialist and Philanthropist. He established a fleet of business outfits under the Lister Conglomerate, which had cut across; Food Production, Real Estate, Insurance, Transport, and Publishing. He became the Aare Musulumi of Yoruba land in 1980, amongst several others.

    LEBANESE CONNECTION
Perhaps the history of Ibadan early business titans would not be complete, without mentioning the impact of the Lebanese community in Ibadan’s early business growth and development. A leading trailblazer among the Lebanese community was the Zard family, who settled in the early 1930’s and has grown and prospered in Ibadan. The current leading lights of the Zard Family were Maurice, Wadji, and Raymond, who was born at the Jericho Nursing home Ibadan on the 27th of May 1938 and became a Naturalized Nigerian and the holder of a National award of OFR. He is the Balogun Babalaje of Ibadan land. The Zard business empire includes; Zartech, Kopek Construction limited, Interpac limited, Energy foods, Livestock, Poultry, and fish farming, and they were believed to hold a sensible portion of the landed property of Iyaganku, Dugbe, the commercial nerve centre of Ibadan, and Oluyole amongst several other investments in Ibadan. Their Parents, Kalil and Latife Zard were one of the early pioneers of cocoa business in Ibadan land.

    IBADAN PEOPLE’S PARTY,
IPP In the city of Ibadan, in the early 50’s, was the rising importance of the Ibadan People’s Party (IPP) which was established in June 1951, with Chief Augustus Meridith Adisa Akinloye as the founding chairman and other members were;- Chief S.A Akinyemi, Chief Samuel Lana, former Olubadan of Ibadan land, Chief Daniel Tayo Akinbiyi, also former Olubadan, Chief S. Ajuwon, Chief S.A Aderounmu, Chief R.S Biobaku, Chief Akin Allen, Chief Akiniyi Olunloyo, Chief Owoade Lanlehin, Moyosore Aboderin, Richard Osuolale Akinjide, and Adeoye Adisa. Akinjide, who qualified as a lawyer on the 4th of March 1956, came back home to join the grass roots politics of Adelabu, who found Akinjide’s legal prowess amazing, in the celebrated case of Slapping a (Customary Court) Judge- D.T Akinbiyi (later Olubadan) , Akinjide was the younger counsel, to Dingle Foot QC- the British Lawyer, hired by Adelabu for his defense. As a payback, Akinjide was elected into the Federal Parliament at the age of 27, in 1959, with an official emolument of £840 pounds per annum, i.e. almost £70 pounds a month. He however, became a Minister in 1965 at the age of 34. Ibadan’s politics by the 50’s was thick, emerging, and interesting. When Adegoke Adelabu, the flamboyant politician, as Chairman of Ibadan District Council, was accused of corruption, the Ibadan people quickly retorted- “Adelabu ma ko wo wa je, igunnu lo ni tapa, tapa lo ni igunnu” (Adelabu, Continue to steal our money the more, Igunnu owns Tapa, Tapa owns Igunnu).

In the growth of Ibadan, one would not also forget the early legal luminaries who practised then, mostly in Ibadan. Mojeed, Gani and Yekinni Agbaje, Ayo Rosiji, Chief S.L Durosaro, Obafemi Awolowo, Chief S.L Akintola, Abiodun Akerele, Olajide Olatawura, Busari Obisesan, Layi Ogunsola, Adeoye Adisa, Chief FRA Williams, who also practised in Ibadan, before relocating his practice to Lagos, Kayode Eso, who also relocated his practice from Jos to Ibadan, Samuel Agbaje Williams, Emmanuel Fekayode, Olufemi Ayoola and his brother Olayinka Ayoola, Alhaji Bolarinwa Oyegoke Babalakin, later retired Justice of the Supreme Court, Mrs. Folake Solanke, who practised in Rotimi Williams Chambers in Ibadan in 1963, Akin Aguda, and S.O Ighodaro. Others were Chief SPA Ajibade, Gboyege Ademola, the Greek Cypriot Lawyer, E.H Lembron, Afe Babalola, and Victor Esan, the husband of the first Ibadan woman senator, and later Iyalode of Ibadanland- Chief Mrs Wuraola Esan, Kola Daisi, amongst several others.

Ibadan of course was the home of Veteran Journalists and Broadcasters;- Lateef Jakande, Akintunde Emiola (now Professor of Law), Olaniran Ogunyemi Ogungbemi, Akin Otiko, Dokun Famubode, Mrs Anike Agbaje Williams, Julie Coker, Ronke Darley, Adebayo Sanda, Yemi Farounbi, Adebayo Faleti, Peter Ajayi, Labanji Bolaji, Areoye Oyebola, Felix Adenaike, Banji Kuroloja, Agboola Sanni, Adebayo Williams (now Professor), Segun Osoba, Folu Olamiti, Peter Apesin, Biodun Oduwole and several others.

The first oldest and surviving Newspaper in Ibadan and Nigeria- the Nigerian Tribune, established by Chief Obafemi Awolowo in Agbadagbudu, Yemetu Ibadan in 1948 and the Daily Sketch, the WNTV, WNBS, the Radio Nigeria, Ibadan were breeding grounds for journalists and broadcasters.

I.K DAIRO, FELA AND REX LAWSON In the entertainment world of the early 50’s and 60’s, Ibadan was a beautiful city to behold. It was the home of highlife at Easy Life Hotel of Bola Johnson in Mokola, Paradise Hotel and African club Mokola, where Eddy Okonta played, Central Hotel where Orlando Julius and Roy Chicago played, JMJ Night club and bar of J.M Johnson in Mokola, were prominent city hangouts. Fela and Rex Lawson played in Ibadan in 1967, before relocating to Lagos. Mokola was the soul of Ibadan city life, with its Highlife clubs, its brothels, and its nightclubs and bars. Chrisbo Hotel Odo-ona Ibadan, was also an important hang out. I.K Dairo started the Morning Star Orchestra in Ibadan in 1957. Daniel Ojoge pioneered Juju music in Ibadan. In Apala and Awurebe – Tatalo Alamu and Dauda Epo Akara, dominated the scene. Idowu Animasaun, the Juju Apola King and the Juju maestro, King Sunny-Ade, Commander Ebenezer Obey and Prince Adekunle were also regular faces in Ibadan. Moses Olaiya Adejumo, who trained King Sunny Ade, started as a Highlife Musician, before he diversified into Travelling Theatre in Yemetu Ibadan, with his Alawada Group. Sigma Club of University of Ibadan’s Havanah Nights was also an outstanding event in Ibadan. Ekotedo was Ibadan’s red-light district, whilst Mokola was the soul of Ibadan highlife and night life.

    LANDSCAPES
Ibadan presents fascinating landscape of tradition and modern features. Prominent in its old, indigenous core areas are the Iba’s market (Oja’aba), Beere and the Aafin Olubadan (King’s Palace). From the popular Mapo Hill and Hall, one can easily see, the sea of rusted brown roofs, described as “Running splash of rust: and gold flung and scattered:” by J.P Clark, in his “Ibadan” poem, in places like: Agugu, Ayeye, Aremo, Ode-Aje, Aperin, Gbelekale, Idi-Arere, Oopo Yeosa, Odinjo, Foko, Gege, Isale Ijebu, Kudeti, Oke-Are, Shepherds Hill (corrupted as Oke-Sapati), to mention but a few.

These are interspersed by neighborhoods, of new and modern buildings, which are linked and crisscrossed by winding roads Benjamin Cardozo has said it all, when he said, “History in illuminating the past, illuminates the present and in illuminating the present, illuminates the future” Ibadan, the sprawling megacity on Seven Hills, with a strong admixture of the ancient and the modern, with its entrenched values and rich history of quick firsts in Nigeria, needs to be rejigged, sustained and be celebrated.

As the Yoruba Nation’s melting point and political capital, its glory and preeminence, must be sung, always, even at the rooftop ,,,

Diplomat urges Nigerians to pursue excellence for national growth

    By Adewale Owoade

A former Nigerian Ambassador to the Philippines, Dr Yemi Farounbi,  has urged Nigerians to strive for excellence in order to build a better Nigeria.

Farounbi said this while speaking as chairman during the 2024 Pacesetters Lecture & Awards Ceremony, organised by Pacesetters Online & Magazine, at the NUJ Press Centre, Ibadan.

He further said that by pursuing excellence, Nigerians can work together to create positive change and foster a brighter future for themselves and generations to come.

The event was  themed: “Fostering sustainable development through collaboration and partnership; the role of private sector in driving sustainable development in Oyo”.

“What Nigeria is today are the consequences of the choices we all made, it is not a consequence of the choice the leadership made, we are all responsible, liable for the success and the failure of the Nigeria.

“Because as individual Nigerian, do we purse excellence? Wherever we find ourselves; in our homes, in our jobs, in our private capacity, do we pursue excellence?

“If some of us don’t pursue excellence then we will make the job difficult for our leadership.

“If we pursue excellence then we will get national growth, national development, national achievement and national recognition.

“It is only the pursuit of excellence that can make a country,” Farounbi stated.

The keynote speaker, Dr Babatunde Lawal, who spoke on the theme of the event, said we should stop blaming the government for the challenges facing us as a nation.

Lawal, who is also the Chairman of Brail Construction emphasised the importance of collaboration to national development.

“It is easy to blame the government at all levels globally for these challenges, but the truth be told, we are all contributors to this and the blame must go round on all of us.

“The concept of partnership involves all of us, everyone in this room, whether you are Hausa, Yoruba, Igbo, Itsekiri, or you are in APC, PDP, Labour Party and other parties, whether you are a civil servant, religious leaders, traditional leaders, even the young ones.

“We are supposed to be partners in progress as we build the world where developments are sustainable and no one will be left behind.

“Let me inform you that we are all stakeholders in this journey,” Lawal said.

Some members of House of representative, Local government chairmen and outstanding members of the public were honoured with awards of excellence.

Speaking as a keynote speaker and also as one of the awardees, Rep. Remi Oseni, (Ido/Ibarapa East Federal Constituency), said that revitalisation of Nigerian roads must be a collective efforts.

“As the 10th National Assembly we can do a little, but together we can do so much; collaboration is the key to achieving our goals for Nigerian roads maintenance.

“It’s only through unity and collective efforts that we can truly bring about the revitalisation of Nigerian roads that work for the benefit of all Nigerians,” Oseni said.

Earlier in his welcome address, the Chairman of the magazine, Ademola Babalola, said all the awardees are worthy ambassadors of our nation.(NAN)
