Gov Mbah is using technology to provide solutions to agricultural challenges – Commissioner

    By Flowerbudnews

The Enugu State Ministry of Agriculture and Agro-Industrialisation says the ongoing state’s Coldbox Store project and Integrated Greenhouses are addressing critical agricultural challenges such as seasonality, post-harvest losses and ineffective post-harvest management.

The state’s Commissioner for Agriculture and Agro-Industrialisation, Dr Patrick Ubru, said on Thursday in Enugu that the Coldbox Store project and Integrated Greenhouses programmes were technological-innovations initiated by Gov. Peter Mbah to provide solutions to agricultural challenges.

The commissioner said that the impact of this technological-driven agriculture was evident in the pilot Enugu Refrigerated Aggregation Center at Aguobu Iwollo, “which I commissioned nine months ago on behalf of His Excellency, Gov. Peter Mbah.”

He said that the facility had now been integrated with two additional greenhouse clusters in the agrarian regions of Eke and Ezeagu axis of the state, forming a network for high-quality organic habanero and bale pepper production.

According to him, this supply chain is enabled by the Coldbox Store— a walk-in, off-grid and solar-powered refrigerated container.

He said, “Additionally, open-field fruity vegetable smallholder farmers, along with livestock farmers and meat sellers, are being incorporated into the project’s cold-supply chain.

“These integrations, facilitated by the state Ministry of Agriculture and Agro-Industrialization, enhance the Coldbox Store’s capacity utilization and significantly expand its impact on smallholder cooperative farmers and fresh food distributors in the Udi-Ezeagu agrarian region.

“Witnessing a bountiful harvest during the dry season is every farmer’s dream, and fulfilling this dream remains at the heart of our mission.

“His Excellency, Gov. Peter Mbah, is deeply committed to enabling smart agro-infrastructure – including greenhouses, earth ponds, and a network of solar-powered cold-chain solutions — that empower farmers to address challenges of climate change, seasonality, post-harvest losses, and limited access to high-value markets.”

Ubru noted that the “vision is geared toward strengthening high-quality food production” to meet the demands of a growing population while positioning the state to achieve the standards required for high-value markets and fresh food exports through air freight.

He added, “Our collective goal is to scale this initiative to ensure that every local government in the state benefits from greenhouse farming.

“Through cross-sector partnerships, we aim to expand its reach to more communities while integrating additional value chains, such as fisheries, into greenhouse and cold-chain technology solutions.

“Our mission is to drive a zero-waste, circular and sustainable agricultural transformation across Enugu State’s agrarian zones, starting with the Owo riverine area, to create lasting prosperity for all our rural farmers’ cooperatives.”

  • Osun: Mixed Reactions Trail Aregbesola’s Expulsion, Omoluabi Progressives’ Exit from APC

Osun: Mixed Reactions Trail Aregbesola’s Expulsion, Omoluabi Progressives’ Exit from APC

The political landscape of Osun State has been significantly altered by the recent departure of the Omoluabi Progressives from the All Progressives Congress, APC, and the subsequent expulsion of former Governor Rauf Aregbesola from the party.

The departure of the Omoluabi Progressives and the expulsion of Rauf Aregbesola from the APC have elicited mixed reactions among Osun State residents.

While some view these events as necessary steps towards political clarity, others express concern about potential instability.

These events have elicited reactions from residents concerning the state’s political future.

Apart from Aregbesola’s expulsion, many residents view the exit of the Omoluabi Progressives from the Osun APC as a long-anticipated development.

Adebayo Olatunji, a civil servant in Osogbo, remarked, “This has been brewing for years. The internal conflicts were evident, and it is no surprise they have finally parted ways. The faction’s departure was inevitable due to prolonged internal strife.”

Some community members also expressed apprehension about the potential impact on the state’s political stability.

Funke Adeyemi, a market trader in Ayegbaju, stated, “I’m worried about what this means for us. Political fights often trickle down to affect the common people. There are concerns that political discord could disrupt governance and economic activities.”

The APC’s official response to the Omoluabi Progressives’ departure has been dismissive, stating that their absence will not be felt.

Kola Olabisi, the Osun State APC Director of Media and Information, labeled the group’s exit as “good riddance to bad rubbish.”

Newspot recalled that many members loyal to Rauf Aregbesola had already been expelled or suspended prior to their announcement.

However, supporters of Aregbesola argue that the APC’s stance undermines the contributions of a leader who played a pivotal role in the party’s establishment in Osun State.

Tunde Bakare, a student, commented, “Aregbesola’s efforts built this party here. It is disheartening to see him treated this way. Many of us feel loyalty should be acknowledged and respected.”

The expulsion of Aregbesola from the APC has further polarized opinions.

While the party cites anti-party activities as the primary reason, some residents perceive it as a strategic move to consolidate power.

“It is politics as usual. Eliminate threats to maintain control,” said Kehinde Afolabi, a political analyst based in Osun.

In response to these developments, the Omoluabi Progressives have expressed intentions to realign politically ahead of the 2026 governorship election.

Aregbesola, addressing his supporters on Sunday before the official announcement of quitting the APC, stressed the need for responsible leadership to elevate Osun State.

He stated, “We have the numbers, strength, and political acumen to provide leadership that will make Osun the toast of its peers.”

This assertion has been met with both optimism and skepticism, with some residents being hopeful for a revitalized political movement that prioritizes good governance, while others doubt the feasibility of such ambitions given the current political climate.

The internal conflicts within the APC have not gone unnoticed by the public, and many believe that these disputes have contributed to the party’s declining influence in Osun State.

“The infighting has weakened the party’s standing. They need to resolve their issues to regain trust,” suggested Bimpe Oladipo, a school teacher in Ede.

On the other hand, some residents feel that the departure of dissenting factions could lead to a more unified and effective party structure.

“Without the constant bickering, maybe the APC can focus better on governance,” opined Sola Adekunle, a business owner in Ife.

The ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Osun State has remained relatively silent on these developments but has extended an invitation to the group to join its fold.

However, political observers speculate that the PDP may capitalize on the APC’s internal turmoil to strengthen its position in the state.

Hardship: You’re insensitive to Nigerians – PDP BoT tells Tinubu to revamp economy

The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Board of Trustees, BoT, on Wednesday said the President Bola Tinubu-led All Progressives Congress, APC, administration is insensitive to the plight of Nigerians.

The PDP BoT said the increment in the pump price of fuel, electricity tariff hike, telecommunication charges and the worsening economic situation showed that Tinubu’s administration was insensitive to Nigerians.

In a communique issued at the end of its 79th BoT meeting in Abuja, the party charged Tinubu to rescind its anti-people’s policies and take steps to revamp the economy.

The communique reads partly: “On the national front, the BoT expresses concerns over the worsening economic and security situation, social dislocation and total sense of hopelessness in the country due to the ill-conceived and ill-implemented polices of the All Progressives Congress (APC) administration.

“BoT decries the insensitivity of the APC administration towards Nigerians as evident in the unjustified multiple taxes and failure to stem the increase in the pump price of fuel, electricity tariffs and telecommunication charges with crippling effect on the productive sector and unbearable rise in cost of living in the country.

“The BoT insists that the APC administration lacks the required patriotism, competence as well as a proficient, transparent and innovative governance team to effectively manage the nation’s abundant human and natural resources to benefit our citizens

“The BoT demands that the APC administration immediately rescind all its anti-people policies and takes urgent steps to stimulate the productive sector, create jobs and revamp the ailing economy.”

JUST IN: El-Rufai describes Reno Omokri and Shehu Sani as political mercenaries

    By Sunnex Egbu

Mallam Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai, the immediate past governor of Kaduna state has described former presidential aide and former Senator representing Kaduna Central Senatorial District, Shehu Sani, as political mercenaries.

El-Rufai made the claim on X, while responding to a post by Daniel Bwala, a presidential media aide.

Bwala had chided El-Rufai for criticising the Tinubu-led government, reminding the former governor that he was one of those who campaigned for the president in 2023.

El-Rufai wrote: “I was cabinet minister 22 years ago, and was clear to Asiwaju that I was not interested in any position in his future government.

“The pathetic manner all of you latter-day converts to the Tinubu government make an issue of something that I never wanted in the first place is perhaps a reflection of the level of your moral flexibility.

“If I had remained in the Tinubu government, I will say or do the same on the tragedy within a party I was a founder, and the government that emerged from it – first in private sessions with those concerned, and then go public if no remedial actions are taken.

“Go and check my public service record from 1998. I am only responding to you because I still think you are a decent person who may need a job, and not in the class of Wendell Simlin and that Kaduna pretender that our voters retired in 2019.

“These clowns are political mercenaries that receive humongous monthly stipends from the security vote to be the first to jump on X and other platforms to defend everything the Asiwaju government does or fails to do, no matter how indefensible it may be.

“Enjoy your special adviser position, my brother, but remember that allegiance to God and country comes first in human scale of accountability, before any person or authority.”

Recall that an American woman had accused Omokri of impersonation and identity theft.

Omokri had used the now infamous moniker, Wendell Simlin, in his attempt to link the former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Lamido Sanusi, to the terrorist group Boko Haram.

Since then, political opponents like El-Rufai haver been using the name when referring to Omokri.

AT DAVOS NIGERIA SHOWCASED READINESS FOR INVESTMENTS – TMV

    By Majeed Ishola

The Tinubu Media Volunteers has applauded the President Bola Tinubu administration for using the attendance at the World Economic Forum at Davos Switzerland to showcase Nigeria’s preparedness for foreign direct investments.

We note that this positive exposure of the business opportunities in the country to the gathering of world leaders was encapsulated in the revelation by the Minister of Finance Mr. Wale Edun to the Bloomberg media that the implementation of critical reforms has stabilized the Nigerian economy.

In a statement issued by the Tinubu Media Volunteers and signed by Chukwudi Enekwechi and Shedrach Sunday, Chairman and Secretary of the group respectively quoted the minister as saying that there had been a reclamation of 5% of the country’s GDP, which had been previously lost to “inefficiencies in the federal government and fiscal authorities.”

The minister acknowledged that the removal of wasteful subsidies and the implementation of market-driven pricing mechanisms for petroleum products and foreign exchange had enabled an influx of foreign direct investments to Nigeria The result is that Nigeria’s economy is now on an upward swing and yielding positive outcomes.

“In specific terms, we recall that Shell and Total Energies had announced $5 billion and $3 billion investments in the country, respectively, following the economic reforms.

“It is, therefore, heart-warming that President Tinubu, represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, had used his participation at the World Economic Forum to rally the world on the vast business opportunities that exist in Nigeria.

We also note that the bold economic reforms rolled out by the Tinubu administration, though painful, have started repositioning the economy, and it is gratifying that these policies are resonating well with the international community.

We therefore consider Nigeria’s outing at the World Economic Forum in Davos Switzerland as worthwhile as the Tinubu administration used it maximally to re-launch Nigeria’s economic and growth potential to the world.

  • NLC declares nationwide protests

    NLC declares nationwide protests

    By Flowerbudnews

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has announced a nationwide protest scheduled for Tuesday, February 4, 2025.

The purpose of the protest is to oppose the 50 percent telecom tariff increase approved by the Nigerian government.

This decision comes after the NLC rejected the hike on January 22, arguing that it would worsen the already difficult living conditions of the citizens.

The protest aims to warn the government that workers will not accept this increase, which they believe prioritizes corporate profits over the welfare of Nigerians.

The NLC argued that the tariff hike is a burden on Nigerian workers, with many already struggling with high costs of living.

For instance, a worker earning the current minimum wage of N70,000 would see their telecom bill rise from N7,000 to N10,500 per month, which would be unsustainable.

The NLC also criticized the government for approving this increase swiftly while delaying a much-needed minimum wage increase for workers.

The union has called on the government, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), and the National Assembly to halt the implementation of the tariff hike, urging them to engage in a dialogue for a more reasonable increase.

They also warned of potential further action, including a nationwide boycott of telecom services, if the increase is not reversed.

Osun LG Poll:  Election to Hold in Only Constitutionally Recognized Council Areas

The Osun State Independent Electoral Commission, OSSIEC, has disclosed that the February 22, 2025 local government election will be conducted in the 30 constitutionally recognised council areas in the state.

This revelation was made by OSSIEC Chairman, Barrister Hashim Abioye while fielding questions at the 44th edition of The Frontliners organised by the League of Veteran Journalists in Osogbo on Wednesday.

Abioye also maintained that the Commission did not disqualify any candidate on account of nomination and did not screen them based on tax remittances.

“OSSIEC will conduct election into the 30 constitutionally recognised local governments in the state.

“We did not disqualify any candidate on account of nomination form and tax remittances. We only disqualified names in the list which OSSIEC noticed did not partake in the party primaries.

“Those in the court today were those who were never nominated or on the political party list,” he said.

While explaining that litigation is part of the electoral process anywhere in the world, Abioye revealed that OSSIEC ha recorded the highest number of litigations under him.

He added that there is no election law that did not have provision for litigation.

“Litigation is part of the electoral process and there is no election anywhere where litigation is not encountered.

“In OSSIEC history, we have the highest number of litigation. It is only those in the media that the public is ware of.the radar is clear us legally and constitutionally to conduct the LG election. We have been building on the legitimacy of the constitution.

“We would have encountered problem had it been we got it wrong at the point of notice,” he said.

The OSSIEC boss while highlighting steps the Commission has taken to ensure the conduct of the local government election, said trainings, seminars and retreats have been organised for the staff to ensure credibility of the process.

The chairman of the occasion, Emmanuel Agboola, a retired director of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, stated that election is a process.

He appreciated the Inter Party Advisory Council, Osun chapter, for the job they are doing to support OSSIEC.

“I am more concerned about the process and to ensure it is adjudged credible and the assignment before ossiec is tasking.

“Election is not a perfect job as you re doing your job that some people are there to give you the knocks,” he said.

The acting Chairman, Osun State League of Veteran Journalists, Prince Adeyeye Oyedokun stressing the importance of journalists to the society said the media is so crucial at this stage to democratic governance and to sustenance of democracy and will continue to give account of daily occurrence.

He also lamented that enemies of democracy were already predicting the outcome of the Osun local government election

He urged the public to always respect the practising journalist because they risk everything.
