Coup: US suspends assistance to Gabon

The United States has suspended most assistance to the government of Gabon.

In a statement on Tuesday, the spokesperson for the US Department of State, Matthew Miller, said the suspension was in line with section 7008 of the Department of State’s annual appropriations act.

“The United States has concluded that a military coup d’état has taken place in Gabon. Pursuant to section 7008 of the Department of State’s annual appropriations act, the United States is suspending most U.S. assistance to the Government of Gabon.

“This foreign assistance has been temporarily paused by the United States since September 26.

We underscore that our humanitarian, health, and education assistance will continue to benefit the people of Gabon,” Miller said.

On 30 August 2023, a coup d’état occurred in Gabon shortly after the announcement that incumbent president Ali Bongo had won the general election held on 26 August.

The coup brought an end to the 56-year-long rule of the Bongo family over Gabon. The US had paused its assistance to Gabon.

He, however, assured that the people of Gabon would continue to benefit from its life-saving humanitarian assistance.

He said, “The United States reaffirms our commitment to support Gabon in conducting a timely and durable transition to democratic civilian governance and advancing shared security interests in the Gulf of Guinea.

“We will resume our assistance alongside concrete actions by the transitional government toward establishing democratic rule. We will continue to work closely with the Gabonese people and regional partners.”

The country added, “The United States stands with the Gabonese people in their aspirations for democracy, prosperity, and stability.

In Jakarta, Gov. Mbah woos investors with investment opportunities, ease-of-doing-business

    By Flowerbudnews

Enugu:   Gov Peter Mbah, on Monday, urged Indonesian businesses and investors to take advantage of the numerous investment opportunities, improved business environment and ample returns on investment in Enugu State.

This was even as the governments of Nigeria and Indonesia pledged closer collaboration to boost trades and investments between both countries for their mutual prosperity.

Mbah made the call in a keynote address he delivered at the 2023 Nigerian-Indonesian Investment and Trade Forum, which opened in Jakarta, capital of Indonesia. The same address was issued to newsmen in Enugu.

At the event organised by the Nigerian-Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (NICCI) in collaboration with the Indonesian Trade Promotion Centre, Lagos; Mbah commended the growth of trade volume between Nigeria and Indonesia to $4.7 billion.

The governor, however, observed that both countries could actually do much more, especially considering the abundant opportunities offered by Enugu State.

He listed the investment opportunities in the state, spanning agriculture, mineral resources, logistics, aviation, tourism, real estate, mineral resources and ICT among others.

According to him, in the area of agriculture, Enugu is blessed with 10 per cent arable, fertile land with a high factor of productivity and good access to both surface and subterranean water that makes all year-round agriculture possible.

“The State is climatically disposed to the production of key produce like cassava, oil palm, cashew and spices of various types.

“These areas offer not only the opportunity for primary agricultural production, but also the opportunity to invest in industrial facilities to add value to these produce for local consumption as well as export.

“The State is also blessed with significant deposits of minerals. In the area of petroleum, Enugu State has proven deposits of oil but more importantly has extensive deposits of natural gas.

‘Other minerals within the state include coal, gold, kaolin, gypsum, clay, and limestone, among others. This makes Enugu State ideal not only for mining, but also for the siting of key industries,” Mbah said.

Assuring that Enugu State was open for business, he said his administration’s target to grow the state’s economy from the present $4.4b to a new level of $30b was anchored on extensive private sector investment and utilisation of strong local and international partnerships.

“It is in view of this, that we are here today reaching out to the government and business community in Indonesia to let you know in the clearest way possible that Enugu State is open for business,” he said.

    .

The governor listed some of the key ongoing steps taken by his administration to improve the investment and business climate of Enugu State to include expansion of security networks for improved security.

“A functional One Stop Centre for speedy processing of investment interests and needs, massive urban and rural infrastructural development, establishing about 300,000 hectares land bank for both corporate farmers and special agro-processing zones,

“We are establishing of Free Zones, the recently signed Enugu State Electricity Law to create a free market electric power, and the effort to build a Tier 4 Hyper Scale Data Center.

“Others include far-reaching reforms towards stronger contract enforcement, ease of procurement of land titles, which would now take 72 hours,” he added.

Speaking, the Ambassador of Indonesia to Nigeria, Dr. Usra Harahap, reiterated the readiness of the government and business community of Indonesia to strengthen investment and trade ties with Nigeria at both federal and sub-national levels for mutual benefits.

“In 2022, the trade volume between Indonesia and Nigeria reached US$4.7 billion, with the majority of Indonesia’s imports in oil and gas.

“However, there are untapped potentials for trade and investment in other sectors, which are massive and open for future development,” Harahap said.

In his remarks, Nigeria’s Ambassador to Indonesia, Mr Usman Ogah, said the Investment and Trade Forum was yielding the required results.

Ogah said: “At this time last year, we were saying our $2.6 billion trade volume would go to $4 billion. Today, we are talking of $4.7 billion in less than one year.

“And the Chamber has said they are targeting $6 billion from now to December ending. I can bet you we will do it. And it is important I tell you that the balance of trade is in the favor of Nigeria.”.

The organisers led by the President of the Nigerian-Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industries, Mr. Ishmael Balogun, and the Director, Indonesia Trade Promotion Centre, Lagos, Mr. Hendro Jonathan Manurund, reiterated their resolve to deepen trade and investment relations between both nations./Flowerbudnews

At the meeting which had a global audience on social media including X(Former Twitter), Instagram, Facebook, and Linkedin, I spoke about various factors including illegal migration that results in humanitarian crises and poverty challenges in Nigeria, Africa, and the World. The challenges of young people, when they migrate include human trafficking, organ harvesting, modern-day slavery, sexual abuse, poor living conditions in the new country of asylum, and sometimes death in the Mediterranean Sea or desert.

I also discussed the Multi-sectoral approach of the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Tinubu’s Policy framework on how to solve the “Jakpa” Syndrome through significant strides in the Poverty Eradication Programmes, Job creation, Creative industry, Education, Health, Science, Environment, the inclusion of young people in leadership, and sports, etc.

Quick Solutions to most of these Global Challenges were part of the issues discussed at the meeting aimed at exploring the connection between migration, youth, and development especially among the young people between ages 15 and 24 years, who make up 16% of the world’s population.

  • Betta Edu Co-Chairs meeting of EU, 48 Countries’ Reps To Discuss Young Migrant Issues In Netherlands

Betta Edu Co-Chairs meeting of EU, 48 Countries’ Reps To Discuss Young Migrant Issues In Netherlands

    .By Biola Lawal

The Minister for Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Dr. Betta Edu has co-chaired  an international meeting in the Hague, Netherlands,  on ways of  ”Preventing humanitarian crises and reducing illegal migration”

Speaking during her opening remarks, Betta Edu said that the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Tinubu was giving young Nigerians productive opportunities with pioneering innovative ideas through different startup initiatives, a statement by Rasheed Olanrewaju Zubair, Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to Honourable Minister, MHAPA disclosed.

Edu was joined by the European Union and representatives of 48 other countries in Hague, the Netherlands capital, in an event which also  discussed disturbing migration issues involving young people in Africa and the world.

Co-hosted by Nigeria and the Netherlands, the Minister was leading the Nigerian delegation to the Thematic Meeting of the Rabat Process On Migration, Youth, And Development taking place in the Netherlands capital.

Dr. Edu noted that exploring the connection between migration, youth, and development was important as the youths between ages 15 and 25 years, who make up 16% of the world’s population are a growing mobile demographic that could play a significant role in fostering positive development.

She further disclosed that “In Nigeria, like in other parts of Africa, the youth have developed a robust startup ecosystem, attracting over 2 billion USD in investment between 2015 and 2022.

“In 2022 alone, 107 startups in Nigeria, founded by persons between the ages of 25 and 35, attracted over 800 million USD in investment”

Aside from Nigeria, Dr. Edu stated, “In Egypt, startups raised 791 million USD and South African startups raised 993 million between 2015 and 2022 according to Disrupt Africa’s 2022 startups report”

The Minister expressed delight that the youth are not only pioneering innovation through tech startups but are also making significant strides in the creative industry, education, medicine, science, leadership, and sports.

On the Japa(migration of skilled persons) syndrome in Nigeria, Dr. Edu explained that a good number of the migrants faced myriads of challenges in the countries of their migration.

“In Nigeria, the Japa Syndrome, which refers to young highly skilled workers and university graduates, migrating in their numbers in search of better education, better-paying jobs, and self-actualization, in Europe and North America, has become a hot-button topic, especially when you consider that in 2022, diaspora remittances to Nigeria, stood at $21.9 billion.

“However, these young migrants are faced with diverse challenges in their quest for new opportunities and avenues for expression, such as the dangers of human trafficking, smuggling of migrants, sexual abuse, poor living conditions overseas, organ trafficking, modern-day slavery, and other forms of exploitation.

“A recent survey of immigrants in the United States indicated that almost 50% of migrants between the ages of 15 and 35 years of age surveyed, had experienced some form of depression or psychosocial challenge”, she added.

The Minister expressed optimism that the thematic meeting would provide a platform to deliberate on the challenges faced by young migrants, as well as celebrate the achievements and innovations of the youth. She called on the developed countries to support the middle and low-income countries to create jobs and an enabling environment for their youths in their country as this would reduce the pressure on these young people to migrate and seek greener pastures elsewhere.

Netherlands Secretary General, Ministry of Foreign Affairs Paul Huijts, said the meeting was focused on a shared commitment to promote meaningful participation opportunities for young people and ensuring that they meet their needs to address the root causes of irregular migration.

Huijts commended President Tinubu for the appointment of Dr Betta Edu, a young professional in his Cabinet to oversee Nigeria’s Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation which also supervises the National Commission for Refugees Migrants and Internationally Displaced Persons, saying unbroken cooperation on migration, and solutions for intelligence growth of young people cannot be needed at any time other than now.

“As part of our commitment to actively support young people, we need to engage in dialogue and change the best practices so that our efforts continue to address their needs.

“Let us listen to challenges that young people in our country face like poor education, unemployment, low number of youth, and women’s leadership and involvement in national international decision making. For Nigeria, President Tinubu is indeed changing the picture of leadership and increasing daily the youth and women’s inclusion in governance.

The European Union Commission’s Director General for International Partnership, Erica Gerretsen, said the essence of the program was to engage participants to increase their voice in leadership policies and decision-making.

“Giving Voice also means building narratives into a positive story about the migration of young people and the potential they have to contribute to the development of their country rather than seeking illegal migration.

“We are leading by example by strengthening the institutional engagement in the European institutions.

“Our EU boards for international partnerships is a group of 25 young people from around the world, which was established in 2021, to advise on youth participation and empowerment, as well as helping to use our policies to change the narratives in countries “she explained.

Other Speakers at the event include the Morrocco Foreign Affairs on Africa Cooperation and Abroad, Fouad Kadmri, Monica Zanette of the International Centre for Migration Policy Development (ICMPD) as well as Nigeria’s Ambassador to the Netherlands, Dr. Eniola Ajayi among others. Biden heads to Israel after Gaza hospital strike kills hundreds

    By Flowerbud News

    Oct. 18, 2023

A strike on a Gaza hospital killed hundreds of Palestinians, deepening tensions in the Middle East and raising the stakes for U.S. President Joe Biden as he flies to Israel on Wednesday to signal support for its war against Hamas.

Palestinian officials said an Israeli air strike hit the hospital, with the Palestinian Authority’s health minister accusing Israel of causing a “massacre”.

Israel blamed the blast at Al-Ahli al-Arabi hospital on a failed rocket launch by the Palestinian Islamic Jihad group, which denied responsibility.

Reuters could not independently verify the claims around the catastrophe, which has inflamed a region already in crisis since Hamas carried out an Oct. 7 cross-border rampage against communities in southern Israel in which at least 1,300 people died.

Palestinian ministry spokesperson Ashraf Al-Qudra said rescuers were still pulling bodies from the rubble.

Al Jazeera carried footage showing a frantic scene as rescue workers scoured blood-stained debris for survivors.

Rescuers and civilians were shown carrying away at least four victims in body bags.

A Gaza civil defence chief gave a death toll of 300, while health ministry sources put it at 500.

Biden’s complex diplomatic mission to the Middle East was supposed to calm the region and shore up humanitarian efforts for Gaza.

However, after the strike, Jordan cancelled a planned summit with the U.S. president, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi.

Abbas also cancelled plans to meet Biden, as Palestinian security forces fired tear gas and stun grenades to disperse anti-government protesters in the occupied West Bank city of Ramallah as popular anger boiled.

Protests also took place at Israel’s embassies in Turkey and Jordan and near the U.S. embassy in Lebanon, where security forces fired tear gas toward demonstrators.

Before the hospital strike, health authorities in Gaza said at least 3,000 people had died in Israel’s 11-day bombardment that began after the Hamas assault, which caught Israel by surprise and led to nearly 200 people being taken to Gaza as hostages.

The Israeli military urged Gaza City residents to relocate southward on Wednesday, saying there was a “humanitarian zone” with aid available in Al-Mawasi, 28 km (17 miles) down the coast of the Palestinian enclave.

“The IDF calls on #GazaCity residents to evacuate south for their protection,” said a social-media post by the military.

Speaking to reporters as Biden flew to Tel Aviv, White House national security spokesperson John Kirby said Biden would put “tough questions” to Israeli leaders but did not give details.

Biden will meet Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the Israeli war cabinet seeking to get a sense of Israel’s plans and aims, Kirby said.

He also aims to get humanitarian aid into Gaza, where millions of Palestinians are surviving with scant food, fuel and water due to Israel’s siege.

“He’ll be asking some tough questions, he’ll be asking them as a friend, as a true friend of Israel, but he’ll be asking some questions of them,” Kirby said.

It was unclear what Biden could accomplish during his visit. Kirby said the U.S. president planned to speak with Abbas and Sisi on his way back to Washington.

“This sort of murky but horrific event makes diplomacy harder and increases escalation risks,” said Richard Gowan, UN director at International Crisis Group.

Biden has previously said the United States does not want the conflict to flare up into a wider war.

Iran, which supports Hamas, Islamic Jihad, and Lebanon-based Islamist group Hezbollah have warned Israel of escalation if it fails to end aggressions against Palestinians.

The U.S. State Department told Americans not to travel to Lebanon after exchanges of fire between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon’s south.

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said he was “horrified” by hundreds of people killed in Tuesday’s strike on the hospital.

Guterres appealed to Hamas for the immediate and unconditional release of hostages, and to Israel to allow immediate unrestricted access to humanitarian aid for Gaza.

UN chief condemns attack on Al Ahli Arab Hospital, UNRWA school

    By Cecilia Ologunagba

The UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres has condemned the strike on Al Ahli Anglican Episcopal Hospital in Gaza, with preliminary reports of hundreds killed and many others wounded, including women and children.

He also condemned the attack on a UN Palestine refugee agency (UNRWA) school in Al-Maghazi refugee camp in Gaza which killed at least six people.

UN spokesperson, Stephane Dujarric, said this in a statement on Tuesday.

Dujarric said the secretary-general extended his sincere condolences to the families of the victims and wishes a swift recovery to those injured.

He emphasised that hospitals, clinics, medical personnel, and UN premises were explicitly protected under international law.

Similarly, the World Health Organisation (WHO) condemned the attack on Al Ahli Arab Hospital.

“The hospital was operational, with patients, health and care givers, and internally displaced people sheltering there.

“Early reports indicate hundreds of fatalities and injuries,” it said in a statement.

According to the UN health agency, the hospital is one of 20 in the north of the Gaza Strip facing evacuation orders from the Israeli military.

It said that the order for evacuation had been impossible to carry out given the current insecurity and critical condition of many patients.

WHO said that other problems were lack of ambulances, staff, health system bed capacity, and alternative shelter for those displaced.

The agency, however, called for the immediate active protection of civilians and health care.

Russia has warned Israel against a ground offensive against the Islamist group Hamas in the Gaza Strip.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, in comments were reported by Russian state media, said on Tuesday that there was a threat of an expansion of the conflict in the Middle East.

The threat would be terrible consequences for the entire region and with a greater humanitarian catastrophe.

Peskov was speaking in Beijing, where President Vladimir Putin is making a two-day visit.

The Kremlin says that Putin intends to discuss the situation in the Middle East with China’s party and state leader Xi Jinping on the sidelines of the Belt and Road Forum.

Putin himself spoke on the phone with several leaders in the Middle East on Monday, including Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.

The Kremlin chief, who was waging a destructive war against Ukraine, called for a ceasefire to protect civilians.

Peskov once again confirmed that Abbas is expected to visit Moscow, though no date has been set.

Russia advocated the creation of an independent Palestinian state while supporting security guarantees for Israel.

The people of Israel must live in peace; Peskov stressed, but said the most important task now is to end the war in the Middle East.

    Oct. 17, 2023

Israel has asked the United States for $10 billion in emergency aid amid the escalation of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, the New York Times newspaper reported.

The White House is reportedly preparing an assistance package for Israel, which also contains aid to Ukraine, funding to reinforce the U.S.-Mexico border, and aid to Taiwan, the newspaper said late on Monday night.

On Sunday, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken said that Washington was considering Israel’s requests for additional military aid to conduct its operation in the Gaza Strip.

On Tuesday, White House National Security Council spokesperson John Kirby said that U.S. President Joe Biden during his visit to Israel scheduled for Oct. 18 would get an update from Israeli officials about their strategy against Hamas in Gaza, including the pace of their military operations.

Last week, a U.S. official told Sputnik that Washington had not made a decision on whether it would tie in assistance for Ukraine and Taiwan in a supplemental funding request it was preparing to submit to Congress seeking additional aid for Israel.

U.S. Army Secretary Christine Wormuth said the U.S. military would need additional support from Congress to be able to provide security assistance to Ukraine and Israel simultaneously.

On Oct. 7, Palestinian group Hamas launched a surprise attack on Israel, prompting retaliatory strikes on the Gaza Strip.

The conflict has left thousands of people dead and injured on both sides.
