3 Palestinian leaders killed in Israel strike in Beirut

    Flowerbud News

A Palestinian militant group said on Monday that three of its leaders were killed in an Israeli strike on Beirut, the first attack within city limits as Israel escalated hostilities against Iran’s allies in the region.
The Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) said the three leaders were killed in a strike that targeted Beirut’s Kola district.
The strike hit the upper floor of an apartment building in the Kola district of Lebanon’s capital, Reuters witnesses said.
There was no immediate comment from Israel’s military.
Israel’s increasing frequency of attacks against the Hezbollah militia in Lebanon and the Houthi militia in Yemen have prompted fears that Middle East fighting could spin out of control and draw in Iran and the United States, Israel’s main ally.
The PFLP is another militant group taking part in the fight against Israel.
Israel on Sunday launched airstrikes against the Houthi militia in Yemen and dozens of Hezbollah targets throughout Lebanon after earlier killing the Hezbollah leader.
The Houthi-run health ministry said at least four people were killed and 29 wounded in airstrikes on Yemen’s port of Hodeidah, which Israel said were a response to Houthi missile attacks.
In Lebanon, authorities said at least 105 people had been killed by Israeli air strikes on Sunday.
Lebanon’s Health Ministry has said more than 1,000 Lebanese have been killed and 6,000 wounded in the past two weeks, without saying how many were civilians.
The government said a million people – a fifth of the population – have fled their homes.
The intensifying Israeli bombardment over two weeks has killed a string of top Hezbollah officials, including its leader Sayyed Hassan  Nasrallah.
Israel has vowed to keep up the assault and says it wants to make its northern areas secure again for residents who have been forced to flee Hezbollah rocket attacks.
Israeli drones hovered over Beirut for much of Sunday, with the loud blasts of new airstrikes echoing around the Lebanese capital.
Displaced families spent the night on benches at Zaitunay Bay, a string of restaurants and cafes on Beirut’s waterfront.
Many of Israel’s attacks have been carried out in the south of Lebanon, where the Iran-backed Hezbollah has most of its operations, or Beirut’s southern suburbs.
Monday’s attack in the Kola district appeared to be the first strike within Beirut’s city limits.
Syrians living in southern Lebanon who had fled Israeli bombardment had been sleeping under a bridge in the neighborhood for days, residents of the area said.
The United States has urged a diplomatic resolution to the conflict in Lebanon but has also authorised its military to reinforce in the region.
U.S. President Joe Biden, asked if an all-out war in the Middle East could be avoided, said “It has to be.”

FG hands over 64 CNG buses to labour unions, NANS

    Flowerbud News

The Federal Government has handed over 64 Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses to representatives of the Trade Union Congress (TUC), the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC), and the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS).

The handover of the buses took place on Sunday at the State House Conference Centre, Abuja, as part of activities marking Nigeria’s 64th independence anniversary.

Mr Wale Edun, the Coordinating Minister of the Economy and Minister of Finance, led the government delegation to the handover ceremony.

The delegation included Alhaji Mohammed Idris, Minister of Information and National Orientation, Sen. Abubakar Bagudu, Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, and Mr Ayodele Olawande, Minister of State for Youth Development.

Edun said when deployed for commuter service, the buses would significantly reduce transportation costs in the country, bringing hope for a more affordable and efficient public transport system.

He described the distribution of the buses as fulfilling President Bola Tinubu’s promise to provide affordable and efficient transportation to support Nigerians after the removal of fuel subsidies under the Presidential Initiative on Compressed Natural Gas (PCNGi).

He emphasised that this initiative aimed to alleviate the burden on the poor and vulnerable and support macroeconomic reforms that would position the country on the path to economic stability.

The Minister further explained that the symbolic handover of 64 buses on the eve of Nigeria’s National Day marked the beginning of a broader national rollout.

He said the Federal Government planned to distribute over 500 CNG buses and 100 electric vehicles in the first instance.

He added that the CNG initiative aligned with Nigeria’s commitment to cleaner energy while leveraging its energy resources for industrialisation.

“Today marks another critical milestone in the policies of President Tinubu. It is a transition to cleaner fuel. The emphasis is on mass transit,” said the minister.

He said the Federal Government placed emphasis on intervening on the side of workers to ensure cheaper transport to enable them cope with rising prices.

He also highlighted the CNG initiative impacted on inflation, saying: “We’ve had an initial spike in inflation, now it has peaked, and it is coming down.

“Mr President and the whole team are determined to ensure that we keep inflation coming down, and this is one of the major ways.”

The Coordinating Minister of the Economy noted that the fuel cost for CNG-powered vehicles was about one-third of the fuel for petrol-powered vehicles.

According to him, motorists can now pay as low as N15,000 to fill a tank instead of N50,000 or more.

“Today, it is CNG. Tomorrow, it will be helping farmers to cope with the remainder of the wet season planting and then the dry season planting, starting from November, with fertiliser, inputs, seeds, and herbicides.

“This is all to get prices down and get the economy moving again,” he said.

Comrade Nuhu Toro, the Secretary-General and Chief Executive of TUC; Comrade Lucky Emonefe, NANS president, and Comrade Uche Ekwe, the Head of International Desk, NLC, commended Tinubu for the gesture.

They called for more CNG buses to be made available to the public.

Toro thanked the President for implementing the N70,000 new national minimum wage.

“This move is a significant step in alleviating the economic burden of Nigerian workers,” he said.

Emonefe praised the government for its commitment to education and student welfare, citing the provision of a student loan scheme for higher education.

“Nigerian students are happy to be celebrating the 64th anniversary of independence.

“We are not only happy with the CNG buses; we believe that the current President loves the welfare of students and has shown his commitment to this,” said Emonefe.

The NLC representative noted that the benefits of the CNG buses would become more apparent once more buses were deployed across the country.

“If we get more buses, the effect will translate immediately to Nigerians. If people start entering these buses, they will publicise it in the public and their neighbourhood,” he said.

Mr Michael Oluwagbemi, Programme Director/Chief Executive of PCNGi, said that since its establishment one year ago, over 125 conversion centres had been established, compared to the initial seven.

He said investment in the sector had exceeded 175 million dollars, with 12 new mother stations commissioned and 75 more under construction.

“Technician training is being ramped up, with 40 new technicians trained weekly. Over 34,000 conversion kits have been ordered, with more than half already distributed,” he said.

He added that vehicle conversions were taking place at 53 centres in eight states, and that the centres would be expanded to all the 36 states and the FCT.

“They include the presence of tree logs/water snags, which obstruct the safe passage of boats, overloading, night travels as well as failure to use lifejackets by the passengers on board’’, he said.

He said the boats were significant improvement over the traditional wooden boats, adding that they are more durable, safer and offer superior in navigating rivers using minimal human labour.

Nutrition intervention to get increased funding in 2025 – Wike

    Flowerbud News

Wike made the promise when the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) visited him in Abuja on Tuesday.

The minister particularly commended the agency’s Capacity Development for Nutrition Improvement Project (CADNIP), in FCT and open defecation projects, which he described as a huge success.

He said that to sustain the successes, the FCTA would improve the budgetary allocation for nutrition intervention in the 2025, but with a caveat on transparency and accountability in utilisation of the funds.

He pointed out that improved nutrition was key to achieving the goals in health, education and agriculture among other sectors.

“Therefore, if we could add more funds, it will go a long way in improving the standard of service delivery in major sectors,” he said.

Wike further requested the continuation of JICA intervention in education, particularly to improve the teaching of mathematics and other science subjects in FCT public schools.

Mr Ubokutom Nyah, Mandate Secretary, Economic planning, Revenue Generation and Public Private Partnership, disclosed Wike’s approval for the establishment of Nutrition Department in the secretariat and Nutrition Unit across FCTA secretariat and agencies.

Nyah pointed out that the FCTA has been struggling to establish the nutrition department to serve as the focal point for the operation of nutrition programmes and projects.

“This was the clog that was holding the success and implementation of nutrition project in the FCTA.

“It is part of the requirement for the smooth implementation of the JICA nutrition project and other nutrition interventions,” he said.

Also, Dr Udo Atang, Head of FCT Civil Service, said that the approval for the establishment of the nutrition department has been forwarded to Common Services.

Atang explained that the measure was for the department to be properly reflected in the FCTA’s organisational structure.

He said that recommendations for appointment of the Head of the Nutrition Department and other deployments would be forwarded to the minister for approval.

According to him, the multisectoral approval would enhance the structure and improve nutrition programme coordination and implementation in the FCTA.

Earlier, Mr Matsunaga Kazuyoshi, the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to Nigeria, said that the nutrition and open defecation projects were among several projects being implemented by JICA in FCT.

Kazuyoshi, who described the projects as a huge success, solicited for more collaboration to deepen the results-oriented projects and impact more FCT communities.

On his part, Mr Sonoyama Hideki, Chief Project Advisor, CADNIP, explained that the project, earlier designed for implementation from March 2019 to February 2024 has been extended to October 2024.

Hideki said that the project targeted 11,000 pregnant women, children under two years, and mothers.

He said that the project goal was to develop an effective food-based nutrition improvement approach in rural areas.

He added that the project was also designed to strengthen the multisectoral structure of FCTA to adopt the approach.

The chief project advisor said that at the end of the five-year project, minimum dietary diversity for children from six to 23 months increased from 31.8 per cent to 49.8 per cent.

He added that minimum meal frequency for the same age group increased from 81.5 per cent to 86.9 per cent, while minimum dietary diversity for mothers and pregnant women increased from 41.3 per cent to 54.1 per cent.

DRTS impounded 9,389 vehicles in 8 months in Abuja

    Flowerbud News

The Directorate of Road Traffic Services (DRTS), Federal Capital Territory (FCT) says it has impounded 9,389 vehicles for various traffic offenses in the last eight months.

The Head, Public Relations and Enlightenment of the service, Mr Kalu Emetu, said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday in Abuja.

Emetu said that whenever such vehicles were impounded, the offending drivers were usually sent to the directorate’s model drivers’ institute in Lugbe for correction.

This, he said, usually availed the offenders, especially those who did not go through any driving school or institute, the opportunity to Know the best way to drive in the territory.

“Also, apart from paying fines which is a revenue generation to the government, they are made not to have control of the vehicles until they fulfill the stipulated conditions.

“And often times, they are subjected to psychometric test, and in a worst scenario, they are made to even go for psychoanalysis.

“This is to prove whether or not the driver is still fit to be on the road,” he said.

Emetu said that the officers of the directorate might even be stricter by outrightly withdrawing the license of a driver who has proven to be a danger to other road users.

According to him, this is usually the case when the driver has been subjected to all the necessary tests and found to be on the wrong side.

He said that all these efforts were geared towards ensuring that carnages on FCT roads were reduced to the barerest minimum.

On the problem posed by rickety vehicles, he said that the DRTS had subjected a total of 19,929 vehicles to test.

He said that this was in its effort to reduce the number of vehicles that are not roadworthy in the FCT,

He said that out of the 19,929, 9,234 passed the roadworthy test, representing about 47 per cent, while 10,792 were sent back for further maintenance services.

“All these exercise took place between January and August and represents a remarkable improvement compared to what it used to be in the past.

“The reason for this improvement is the strategic increase in enforcement activities which has made more vehicle owners to patronise the inspection centres,” he said.

He said that the inspection centres were located in different parts of the city for easy access by drivers, adding that road worthy vehicles go a long way to reducing road crashes.
