  • Nigeria, others should learn from Liberia election – Ejime

Nigeria, others should learn from Liberia election – Ejime

A global political affairs analyst, Mr Paul Ejime says Nigeria and other African countries have a lot of lessons to learn from the just-concluded presidential election in Liberia.

The election was won by Joseph Boakai, a former Vice President of the country, who defeated incumbent President, George Weah, in a keenly contested run-off election on Nov. 14.

Boakai got 50.89 per cent of the vote having polled 712,741 votes with nearly 99.58 per cent of polling stations counted, according to results from the Nov. 14 election announced by the National Electoral Commission Chairperson, Mrs Davidetta Lansanah.

Weah got 696,520 votes, representing 49.11 per cent of the total votes.

Reacting to the election in a telephone interview with NAN on Sunday, Ejime, an international media and communication expert, rated the election as transparent.

He said that the electoral body displayed a level of trust by conducting a transparent and credible election.

According to him, there is a lesson to be learnt in transparency, confidence in government institutions and trust in the electoral umpire.

One of the key issues in Liberia during the first round of the election in October is that the voters did not wait for the results to be counted. They cast their votes and went back to their homes.

“It shows a level of trust. Election is supposed to be a process not an event. It requires an electoral umpire that can be trusted.

“When people can trust the electoral commission and the political agents can be the eyes and ears of the political parties, you know that democracy is growing,” he said.

Ejime described the election as a “multi-stakeholder enterprise” with separation of powers among the executive, legislature and the judiciary.

“We should have a judiciary that can dispense justice, a legislature that is independent of the executive and the judiciary.

“The people should not engage in vote buying and selling, ballot box coup and political coup, which give rise to military coup.

“The judiciary should understand that it is the last hope of the common man; if the executive and the legislature trample on the citizen, they run to the judiciary, if the judiciary is involved in truncating democracy, who will the people run to?

The military should learn that their job is in the protection of the nation’s territory and not to lead in political governance,” he said

  • Egypt, India abandoned Dollar completely

    Egypt, India abandoned Dollar completely

EssexEGYPT and India, in a strategic alignment with the BRICS bloc’s de-dollarization efforts, have initiated discussions to eliminate the US dollar from their trade relations.

This bold move is a part of a growing trend among BRICS nations to reduce dependence on the US dollar in international trade, and it signifies a significant shift in the global economic landscape.

Integrating New Strategies in Global Trade

The decision by Egypt and India to bypass the US dollar in their trading activities marks a crucial step in the BRICS bloc’s wider strategy. Egypt’s engagement in this initiative follows its invitation to join the BRICS bloc at its 2023 annual summit.

This inclusion is more than just a formal membership; it’s an entry into a collective effort to reshape how global trade is conducted.

By settling trade in local currencies, these nations are not just fostering stronger bilateral relations but are also challenging the traditional dominance of the US dollar in international commerce.

India’s role in this shift cannot be overstated. As one of the most vocal advocates for reducing reliance on the US dollar within the BRICS bloc, India has been at the forefront of these efforts.

The country’s push to abandon the US dollar in its trade relations with Ethiopia and the landmark oil deal settled in local currencies with the United Arab Emirates (UAE) are testaments to its commitment to this cause.

A Ripple Effect Across Geopolitical Boundaries

The inclusion of six new countries, including Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Iran, Egypt, Ethiopia, and Argentina, into the BRICS bloc, reflects a growing discontent with the current global financial system.

The bloc’s expansion and its concerted move towards de-dollarization are causing ripples across geopolitical boundaries, signaling a potential shift in the balance of economic power.

The discussions between Egypt’s Finance Minister, Mohamed Maait, and India’s Ambassador to Cairo, Ajit Gupte, are not just routine diplomatic exchanges.

They represent a concerted effort to devise strategies that would bolster investment and economic diversification between the two nations.

The talks also covered the use of Egypt’s substantial bond issuance in China for potential utilization in India’s financial markets, showcasing a complex web of financial maneuvers aimed at decreasing dependency on the US dollar.

This trend extends beyond just Egypt and India. The entire BRICS bloc has been vocal about its ambition to diminish the greenback’s role in international trade settlements throughout the year.

The adoption of local currencies in bilateral trade is not merely a financial strategy; it’s a political statement that challenges the traditional hegemony of the US dollar in global economics.

The move by Egypt and India to abandon the US dollar in their trade relations marks a bold step towards altering the dynamics of international trade.

As these countries, along with other members of the BRICS bloc, embrace local currencies for trade settlements, they are not only fortifying their economic alliances but also paving the way for a new era in global trade.

This shift could potentially reshape the global economic order, reducing the longstanding dominance of the US dollar and introducing a more multipolar financial world.

  • At last, freedom for 4,068 prisoners begins from Kuje

At last, freedom for 4,068 prisoners begins from Kuje

The Federal Government has disclosed that it has raised N585million to be used for the payment of fines to secure the release of 4, 068 inmates across the federation

Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, said the money was donated by several organisations as part of their Corporate Social Responsibility, CSR, to the country.

He said the first phase of the release of the inmates would commence from the Kuje Correctional Center in Abuja.

The Interior Minister spoke on the sidelines of the 27th Ministerial Committee Meeting of the Inter-Governmental Action Group Against Money Laundering in West Africa, GIABA, which held at the State House, Abuja, yesterday.

In attendance at the meeting were Ministers of Justice and heads of anti-corruption agencies from all the countries within the Economic Community of West African States, ECOWAS.

Tunji-Ojo, who was a special guest at the meeting, said the Ministry of Interior would further collaborate with the Ministry of Justice to tackle the swelling number of awaiting trial inmates in various detention facilities in the country.

He said: “While the Ministry of Justice is in charge of judicial administration, the Ministry of Interior controls the Correctional Institutions, which are transformatory centers that are meant to ensure that inmates have their fundamental rights protected. Of course, they become rehabilitated to be reintegrated back into the society.

“Synergy is key and that is what we have, especially with the Justice Ministry.

“The Justice Ministry and the Ministry of Interior must work hand-in-hand to make sure that the target of the judicial system comes to fruition. The target is not to punish people. It is to remodel, rehabilitate and reintegrate them.

The Attorney-General of the Federation, AGF, understands that. So, it is like end-to-end- a value chain. The Judiciary will do theirs through the courts, then, the Ministry of Interior will take it from there to make sure that they (inmates) come out better and are integrated back into the society.

From here, I am heading straight to the Kuje Correctional Center. We are flagging off the release of about 4,068 inmates. These are people that are non-violent offenders. People that are in, due to their inability to pay fines.

“I said it a couple of weeks ago that we are going to raise about N585m through CSR from corporate bodies, which God has helped us and we have been able to do that.”

  • Adeleke makes u-turn, says he didn’t suspend Osun chief judge

Adeleke makes u-turn, says he didn’t suspend Osun chief judge

Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke has reversed himself, denying the suspension of the State Chief Judge, Justice Oyebola Ojo.

The Governor stated that he only forwarded the resolution of the House of Assembly asking the Chief Judge to “step aside” pending the investigation of the allegation of corruption against her.

The spokesperson to the Governor, Olawale Rasheed had in a statement on Thursday disclosed the Governor’s approval to the suspension of the CJ pending investigation of allegation against her. Another statement issued by the spokesperson the same day stated that the Governor has appointed Justice Olayinka Afolabi as acting Chief Judge with a swearing-in for his inauguration following (Friday).

However, the swearing-in ceremony could not hold as both the Deputy Governor, Kola Adewusi, scheduled to oversee the event, and Justice Afolabi did not show up at the Executive Lounge, venue of the programme on Friday.

However, in a statement issued by the Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Kolapo Alimi on Sunday, he said the Governor has not even appointed any judicial officer as acting Chief Judge, saying he only recommended the judge to the National Judicial Council, being the most senior in line.

It reads, “The government of Osun state has denied news reports that Governor Ademola Adeleke has removed the Chief Judge and appointed an acting Chief Judge, clarifying that the Governor had only forwarded the resolution of the House of Assembly and recommendation for an acting appointment to the Chief Justice of the Federation for decision and action.

“With all sense of responsibility ,it is important to set the records straight that Governor Adeleke has only duly notified the Chief Justice as the Chairman of the National Judicial Council (NJC) in writing about the resolutions of the House of Assembly following a series of petitions made against the sitting Chief Judge of Osun State.

“In the communication, Mr Governor intimated the CJN of the recommendation of the House that the Chief Judge should step aside and included his own submission for an acting appointment to fill the vacuum while the NJC reviews and decides on the petition.

“To that end, the Governor in the same letter recommended to the CJN ,the appointment of the most senior judicial officer, Hon.Justice Olayinka David Afolabi for thorough consideration and further processing by the same NJC through the CJN.

We urge the public to note that while the House of Assembly recommended the appointment of a replacement to the Governor in its resolution, the Governor however, toed the line of law by writing the CJN on the entire development and submitting all materials for NJC as mandated national agency

We therefore wish to state categorically that Governor Adeleke has not appointed any judicial official as acting Chief Judge and nobody has been sworn in as Acting Chief Judge of Osun state.

“Governor Adeleke is a man of due process and rule of law with a deep level of respect for the bar and the bench, the NJC and the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

“We assure the public that Mr Governor is fully aware of the limits of his powers as well as the responsibilities of the various agencies of government and will therefore not act in any way to violate the constitution and rule of law”..

Women Affairs Minister drags couple to court over defilement of 9-year-old daughter

Minister of Women Affairs, Mrs Uju Ohanenye, has instituted a lawsuit against an Enugu couple, Mr Ifeanyi Enwelum and Mrs Christabel Enwelum, over the defilement of their nine-year-old daughter.

Counsel to the minister, Mr Chuma Oguejiofor, told newsmen on Saturday in Enugu that the suit, numbered E/987/2023, was filed at the Enugu State High Court to enforce the fundamental rights of the minor.

According to Oguejiofor, the suit is seeking six prayers from the court.

“First, a declaration that the minor is entitled to respect for the dignity of her person and should not be subjected to torture or inhuman or degrading treatment by the respondents.

“Second, a declaration that Mr Enwelum’s carnal knowledge of the minor between Jan. 2022 and June 2023 constituted an infringement of her right to dignity.

Third, a declaration that the respondents’ attempt at compromising and sweeping earlier charge, Number MEN/319C/2023 under the carpet, was against the law.

“That taking the minor to their residence, Number 13/15 Onoh Crescent GRA, Enugu, to live with them as if nothing had happened constituted mental, emotional or psychological torture for the minor.

“We are also seeking an order of the court that the applicant in the person of the Minister of Women Affairs and the Ministry take immediate custody of the minor and cater for her needs henceforth.

“Fifth prayer is a court order restraining the respondents by themselves or through their agents or privies from having anything whatsoever to do with the minor till she reaches the age of 21 years.

“The sixth prayer is that respondents be made to pay N10 million damages jointly and severally,’’ Oguejiofor said.

Mr Enwelum, step-father of the minor, reportedly had several unlawful carnal knowledge of her between Jan. 1, 2022 and June 10, 2023 at his 13/15 Onoh Crescent, GRA Enugu residence in Enugu North Local Government Area.

The minor’s biological mother, Mrs Christabel Enwelum, was reported to be negligent as she did not protect her daughter from repeated penetration of her vagina.

The penetrations were confirmed by Dr Samuel Ndukwu, medical practitioner at the Nigerian Police clinic, Enugu.

A bail earlier granted Mr Enwelum by an Enugu Magistrate’s Court caused public outcry making the minister to query the rationale behind it.

The minister queried the rationale for the bail considering the nature of the crime and the spate of Sexual and Gender-Based Violence in the country, especially in Enugu State.

At a news conference on Oct. 17, the minister said the Ministry would take up legal action against the couple to ensure that the minor gets justice as well as serve as deterrent to others who might want to toe the same line.

“This minor has been molested severally by her stepfather who has deflowered her and given her diseases as confirmed at the hospital and by the lawyer and mother of the girl.

The matter was taken to court, but unfortunately, a magistrate released the man on bail.

“We want to know why he was released in spite of grave allegations made against him simply because the minor’s mother cried that she did not want her husband to be jailed,’’ the minister told the October news conference.

“What about the voiceless girl? What about the torture and emotional pains the girl went through and threat not to disclose the molestation?” she queried.

“We are suing the woman for negligence. If she was not negligent, this girl would not have suffered this thing for a long time,’’ the minister stressed
