NAFDAC calls for enforcement of drug safety policy in all Rivers hospitals

The Director-General of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, NAFDAC, Professor Mojisola Adeyeye, has urged the Rivers State Government to ensure that all health facilities in the state fully implement the National Policy on Pharmacovigilance

She made the call in Port Harcourt during a stakeholders’ meeting themed “Grassroots Community Sensitisation on Pharmacovigilance.”

The National Policy on Pharmacovigilance is a government guideline that ensures all medicines are closely monitored for safety and that any harmful reactions are promptly reported and addressed.

Speaking through the Director of the Pharmacovigilance Directorate, Dr Uchenna Elemuwa, the NAFDAC DG explained that the policy, created in 2012, outlines the responsibilities of health ministries, healthcare workers, and patients in ensuring the safety of medicines.

According to her, the policy requires every health facility to monitor the safety of medicines. She appealed to the state government to involve all levels of healthcare—tertiary, secondary, primary, as well as private hospitals—so that reports of adverse drug reactions can be properly documented.

Professor Adeyeye also warned about the rising rate of drug abuse among young people. She said the problem has serious consequences and advised parents to pay closer attention to their children.

On his part, the Rivers State NAFDAC coordinator, Emmanuel Onogwu, encouraged the public to “report any strange or harmful reaction noticed after using a medicine.”

Breaking: Lieutenant Yarima escapes assassination attempt in Abuja

A young Nigerian Navy officer, Lt. A.M. Yarima, who recently had a confrontation with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, reportedly escaped an assassination attempt on Sunday evening

Military sources told Vanguard that Yarima was trailed by unidentified men dressed in black and riding in two unmarked Hilux vans with no number plates. The vehicles allegedly followed him from the NIPCO Filling Station off the Line Expressway to Gado Nasco Way.

According to the source, the officer noticed the surveillance and executed a “strategic maneuver,” successfully evading the suspected assailants. The incident reportedly occurred around 6:30 p.m.

The source added that the matter is under investigation and is receiving “the seriousness it deserves,” noting that further details are being withheld so as not to compromise the process.

development comes days after Lt. Yarima, while on duty with other security personnel, engaged in a tense confrontation with FCT Minister Nyesom Wike over a disputed land site in Gaduwa District. The clash, captured on video, sparked widespread public debate and prompted intervention from the Presidency, which subsequently halted the demolition exercise at the site.

Following the incident, military veterans nationwide criticised Wike for verbally insulting the officer and rejected calls for disciplinary action against Yarima.

Spokesman for the Coalition of Retired Veterans, Abiodun Durowaiye-Herberts, warned that ex-service members would “occupy the office and residence of the FCT Minister” if the officer faced any punishment.

He stressed that military personnel owe allegiance to Nigeria—not individual public officials—and insisted that Wike must apologise for his remarks.

“How can a public office holder call an officer ‘a fool’ on camera?” he queried, adding that such conduct undermines national institutions and demeans the dignity of public office.

Meanwhile, Minister of Defence Mohammad Badaru Abubakar has assured that no military personnel acting lawfully will be sanctioned over the altercation.

“We will always protect officers and our armed forces personnel on lawful duty,” Badaru said during a ministerial briefing for the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day celebrations at the National Defence College.

“Any officer on lawful duty will be protected if he is doing his job lawfully and doing it well.”

Veterans had earlier vowed to mobilise and occupy the FCT Ministry if Lt. Yarima faced any form of disciplinary action

The event was witnessed by the Governor of Enugu State, Peter Mbah.

Addressing journalists after their defection, the spokesman of the defectors and member representing Nkanu East/Nkanu West Federal Constituency, Nnolim Nnaji, said their decision was influenced by the need to align with the project-oriented administration of Governor Mbah.

This is not just a political move — it is a bold step into the future! A step borne out of courage, clarity, and our shared determination to reposition Nkanu East and West for greatness.

That era is over! We refuse to remain spectators when we can be key players in Nigeria’s progress.

By aligning with the APC — the party steering national transformation — we are connecting our constituency to the heartbeat of national development. This alignment will bring more projects, more jobs, better infrastructure, and greater empowerment for our youths, women, and communities.

Speaking during an emergency JUSUN Congress in Osogbo on Thursday, Adeniran explained that the motivation for the strike stemmed from the backing received from the labour movement and the determination of union members to secure their rights.

He noted that the meeting was convened to remind members of the reason for the industrial action and to reinforce their collective commitment to the struggle.

According to him, “The strike has not been called off because it was directed by the JUSUN National Secretariat. Until they instruct otherwise, we remain on strike.”

Adeniran stated that the union’s grievances go beyond the planned meeting with the Judicial Service Commission, JSC, insisting that there must be a formal agreement before any negotiation could proceed.

Our strike is beyond the JSC meeting. We must have an agreement before any Judiciary Service Commission meeting can take place.”

The JUSUN chairman informed members that the national president of the union, Marwan Adamu had agreed to visit Osun State in solidarity with the workers due to the ongoing strike.

He emphasised that he could not negotiate alone without the involvement of members and the intervention of the national leadership of JUSUN.

“I cannot negotiate by myself except our members are carried along and the JUSUN national leadership is fully involved,” he declared.

Adeniran assured the workers that the long-awaited promotion letters for JUSUN members would be issued before the strike would be suspended.

He also insisted that the earlier scrapped 2023 promotion exercise must be ratified before the industrial action could be called off.

“The 2023 promotion must be ratified; that is a major condition for ending this strike,” he stated firmly.

The chairman pledged that the confidence and trust of members in the union leadership would not be betrayed, promising continued transparency and unity in their pursuit of justice.

In his remarks, the Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, in Osun State, Comrade Christopher Arapasopo, assured judiciary workers that they would not face any form of intimidation, stressing that the strike was legitimate.

He lamented the prevailing national situation, saying the country had reached a point where legitimate demands could only be achieved through painful means such as strikes.
