Food Poisoning Menace: Garuba Olumide Blames Lack of Farmer Education for Nigeria’s Rising Crisis

    BY ONYEKA EZIKE

Following a recent report on foodborne illnesses by the Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, Dr. Iziaq Salako, the founder of Voice of the Farmers, Afeez Olumide Garuba, has expressed deep concern over the root causes of food poisoning in Nigeria. Garuba attributed the rising menace to a critical lack of education and awareness among local farmers regarding safe agricultural practices.

According to the Minister, unsafe food accounts for more than 53,000 deaths annually, with an estimated 50 million people suffering from food-related diseases. These staggering figures have sparked critical concerns over current food storage practices, preservation methods, and regulatory oversight.

Speaking on Villa Square, a special segment of Cr8tive 9ja, the popular weekly tourism and cultural magazine program anchored by veteran tourism journalist Frank Meke and Bunmi Bade-Adeniji on Mainland 98.3 FM, Lagos, agricultural expert Afeez Olumide Garuba stated that these numbers reflect a harsh reality confronting Nigeria’s food market. Garuba highlighted several factors driving the high fatality rate, noting that public discourse heavily favors food security over food safety.

”Many people focus on food security rather than food safety,” Garuba observed.

“When food issues make the news, the conversation is almost always about failing to achieve food security, while food safety is ignored. True food safety spans from farm to table. To achieve it, farmers, logistics providers, processors, and the government must all play their respective roles across the supply chain.”

Garuba raised specific concerns regarding agricultural production, pointing to the improper application of fertilizers and chemical treatments by some farmers.

”There are established guidelines for applying fertilizer to ensure a healthy crop yield,” he explained.”

However, many farmers mishandle this process. We face significant issues with chemical residues in our food, particularly in vegetables. When fertilizers or pesticides are sprayed, there is a mandatory ‘withdrawal period’, a timeframe during which the chemicals must naturally break down before harvest.”

He added, “Unfortunately, due to greed and unprofessionalism, some farmers harvest their crops prematurely and rush them to the market. Unsuspecting consumers purchase these items, unknowingly ingesting dangerous chemicals that lead to severe illness.”

According to Garuba, this dangerous trend extends to livestock farming. He noted that many farmers inject livestock with medications or chemicals and fail to observe the required withdrawal periods before sale. He emphasized that farmers bear significant responsibility for these failures.

”Our goal is to create robust awareness around food safety in Nigeria, moving beyond just food security. We are actively sensitizing farmers on proper storage and handling,”

Garuba said. “A few years ago, the federal government introduced a fertilizer application guide utilizing the ‘Four Rs’: the Right source, the Right time, the Right place, and the Right rate. These principles empower farmers with essential knowledge.”

Garuba also noted that improper chemical use carries economic consequences for producers. “It is not just about food poisoning; it is also about cost. When a farmer applies excessive fertilizer hoping to force rapid growth, they are indirectly losing money. Many farmers simply lack the proper training, and ultimately, it is the consumers who pay the price with their health.”

He urged the government, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and other agricultural stakeholders to collaborate on widespread educational campaigns for farmers. He also called on regulatory bodies to strictly enforce food quality standards, stressing that “food safety is everybody’s business.”

Award-winning tourism journalist Frank Meke, emphasized the urgent need for structural policy adjustments and proactive government intervention.

Meke warned that the worsening food poisoning crisis poses a severe threat to the country’s younger generations.

In his final note, Garuba cautioned against an over-reliance on food imports. While recommending that the country look inward to achieve sustainability in food safety, he lamented that Nigerians often undervalue their local agricultural potential.

23 Years of Persistence and Patience: Why Senator Sabo Nakudu’s ADC Governorship Ticket in Jigawa State Is No Surprise

    By Mati Ali
The emergence of Senator Sabo Muhammad Nakudu, CON, as the gubernatorial candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Jigawa State has generated widespread political discussion across the state. However, to many political observers, his victory in the party’s primary election is not an unexpected development but rather the culmination of a political journey that began more than two decades ago.

A careful examination of Jigawa State’s political history reveals that Senator Nakudu’s governorship ambition predates that of virtually all current aspirants. Since 2003, he has consistently pursued his aspiration of becoming the Governor of Jigawa State, demonstrating remarkable resilience, commitment, patience, and political endurance. For 23 years, he has remained steadfast in this pursuit, navigating various political transitions while maintaining his relevance and influence across the state.

Over the years, Senator Nakudu has painstakingly built one of the most extensive political structures in Jigawa State. His support base spans all 27 Local Government Areas, with thousands of loyal supporters who have stood by him through different political seasons. This loyalty was once again demonstrated during his recent move to the ADC, where a significant number of supporters followed him into the party.

Historical records show that among those who sought the governorship of Jigawa State in the modern political era, the only individual whose ambition predated Senator Nakudu’s and who eventually became governor was former Governor Senator Ibrahim Saminu Turaki. During the 2003 governorship election, Turaki, then seeking a second term under the All People’s Party (APP), contested against Senator Sabo Nakudu, who flew the flag of the People’s Redemption Party (PRP).

Since that period, Senator Nakudu has remained one of the most experienced and longest-serving political figures associated with the governorship contest in Jigawa State. Many politicians who later contested for or occupied the office of governor entered the race years after he had already established himself as a formidable gubernatorial candidate.

Viewed against this backdrop, Senator Nakudu’s victory in the ADC gubernatorial primary election appears to be the natural outcome of years of political engagement, grassroots mobilization, and sustained public support. His entry into the ADC attracted a substantial influx of political stakeholders and supporters from across the state.

Among those who joined the ADC following Senator Nakudu’s defection were supporters of prominent political figures such as Malam Aminu Ibrahim Ringim, Senator Ubale Shittu, Alhaji Ahmed Isa Barayan Dutse, former Local Government Chairmen under the leadership of Hon. Bala Chamo, as well as several notable figures from the APC. The movement also included former Special Advisers and other influential political actors who resigned from their positions to align themselves with the ADC.

Political analysts have observed that Senator Nakudu’s victory in the ADC gubernatorial primary election was largely driven by the combined support base brought into the party by Senator Sabo Nakudu himself, His Excellency Ahmed Mahmoud Gumel, Malam Aminu Ibrahim Ringim, Senator Ubale Shittu, Alhaji Ahmed Isa Barayan Dutse, former Local Government Chairmen, and several other prominent political figures. Their collective influence and mobilization efforts significantly contributed to Senator Nakudu’s emergence as the party’s gubernatorial candidate.

The conduct of the primary election itself has also been widely commended. The exercise was carried out peacefully, transparently, and in accordance with democratic principles. At the conclusion of the process, Senator Sabo Nakudu secured 35,939 votes, while Hon. Bashir Adamu Jumbo garnered 19,533 votes. The outcome was seen by many party members as a clear reflection of the collective will of ADC members across the state.

Senator Nakudu’s emergence as the ADC governorship candidate therefore represents more than just a primary election victory. It marks a significant political milestone and reinforces his position as one of the most enduring political figures in Jigawa State’s democratic history. For many supporters, it also signals the beginning of a new chapter and a renewed push for political transformation in the state.

As preparations for the 2027 general elections gather momentum, party stakeholders and supporters are being encouraged to unite behind the ADC’s vision and work collectively towards achieving electoral success at all levels. The call for unity, inclusiveness, and shared purpose is expected to play a crucial role in determining the party’s fortunes in the years ahead.

  • Hotel Managers Conference Africa Set to Redefine Hospitality Gatekeeping Across the Continent

    By Onyeka Ezike

In medieval times, gatekeepers were entrusted with protecting city entrances from external threats and ensuring that only authorized individuals gained access. In today’s hospitality industry, hotel professionals occupy a similar strategic position as the first point of contact between a nation and its visitors. Their attitude, conduct, and service delivery often shape the first impression tourists have about a destination, making them critical stakeholders in defining a country’s image and visitor experience.

For Olugbenga Sunday, Convener of the Hotel Managers Conference Africa, hospitality gatekeeping extends far beyond customer service; it represents a transformative force capable of reshaping Africa’s tourism and hospitality narrative.

Speaking on *Villa Square*, a special segment of *Cr8tive 9ja*, the popular weekly tourism and cultural magazine programme aired every Thursday on Mainland 98.3 FM Lagos and anchored by renowned tourism journalist Frank Meke alongside Bunmi Bade Adeniji, Sunday emphasized the indispensable role of hospitality in the tourism value chain across Africa.

According to him, the hospitality sector significantly influences tourists’ experiences and ultimately determines how destinations are perceived globally.

“When we discuss tourism at the national level, we must prioritize the hospitality sector because of the critical role it plays in shaping the overall tourism experience. Hospitality professionals serve as the interface between a country and its visitors, and their service delivery greatly influences tourists’ perceptions and the image of the nation,” he stated.

The Hotel Managers Conference Africa, regarded as the continent’s largest gathering of hotel managers and hospitality professionals, is scheduled to hold from July 11 to 12 at Lagos Continental Hotel. This year’s edition marks the eighth outing of the conference since its establishment.

Founded in 2016 in Akwa Ibom State, the conference experienced a temporary disruption during the COVID-19 pandemic but has since grown into a leading platform promoting innovation, professionalism, and service excellence within Africa’s hospitality industry.

Sunday explained that the conference was created to equip hotel operators and managers with global best practices while fostering collaboration across the sector.

“The conference features workshops, networking opportunities, and extensive discussions on guest experience, which remains at the heart of hospitality,” he said.

“You cannot talk about hospitality without discussing guest experience. Guest experience is about service delivery, how you make customers feel, and the lasting impression guests leave with after interacting with your brand.”

The two-day conference will feature keynote presentations, panel discussions, workshops, and networking sessions designed to elevate hotel service delivery across Africa to international standards.

Beyond its business objectives, Sunday noted that the conference seeks to create sustainable impact by raising service standards, strengthening industry capacity, and building a legacy for future generations of hospitality professionals. Participants will also engage with leading stakeholders, hospitality executives, and hotel managers from across the continent.

Among the distinguished speakers expected at the event are Wasiu Adeyemo Babalola, Nigeria’s first Professor of Hotel Management and Tourism and an academic at Atiba University; Karl Hala; Ahmed Raza; Justina Ovat; and Martin Bredenoord, among other industry experts.

The conference has also attracted support from major corporate stakeholders, including [OPay]. According to Sunday, the fintech company is working towards developing payment infrastructure solutions that will better integrate the hospitality industry into its platform. He noted that such partnerships would help address payment-related challenges within the sector while improving operational efficiency for hospitality businesses.

Speaking further on the industry’s growth trajectory, Sunday expressed optimism about the future of hospitality in Nigeria and across Africa.

“When you look at the Nigerian hospitality landscape today, you can clearly see remarkable progress in areas such as manpower development, service delivery, and culinary excellence. Lagos, for instance, hosts several leading international hospitality brands, reflecting the significant growth taking place within the sector.

“Local brands are also making remarkable strides. Africa is steadily redefining its tourism and hospitality narrative by embracing its culture, heritage, and indigenous cuisine as key drivers of global appeal.”

As Africa’s tourism industry continues to evolve, the Hotel Managers Conference Africa aims to remain a strategic platform for innovation, professional development, and service excellence, further reinforcing the continent’s emergence as a formidable force in global hospitality.
