AXA Mansard urges firms to prioritise employee wellbeing for productivity, growth

    By Taiye Olayemi

AXA Mansard Health, a health insurance company and member of the AXA Group, has urged organisations to view employee wellbeing as a strategic investment that enhances productivity and drives business growth.

The Chief Executive Officer of the company, Mr Tope Adeniyi, made the call at a breakfast meeting with senior human resources and business leaders in Lagos.

Adeniyi said the discussion focused on the rising cost of healthcare and its impact on employee wellbeing and overall corporate performance.

He noted that while many organisations face increasing operational expenses, investing in employee wellness offers measurable benefits in productivity, talent retention, and long-term cost management.

According to him, prioritising employee wellness yields measurable returns in performance and cost management.

He said, “Every business leader knows the pressure of cost containment.

“But we have learned, from more than a decade of serving thousands of employees across Nigeria’s most demanding sectors, that companies which treat wellbeing as a performance driver not a cost centre are the ones that thrive.”

‎He said that data from AXA Mansard Health’s portfolio revealed a clear link between proactive investment in employee wellbeing and reduced claims costs per employee.

“Cutting health or wellness budgets to ‘save’ money often backfires.

“When employees are stressed or unwell, they may show up physically but be mentally and emotionally absent.”

‎Adeniyi emphasised that supporting staff health should be viewed as sound business strategy, not corporate social responsibility.

“Taking care of our employees is not a sentimental choice it’s good business,” he affirmed.

Adeniyi reiterated that AXA Mansard Health remains dedicated to equipping businesses with data-driven insights and practical tools to sustain a healthy, productive workforce.

‎Other participants at the session, comprising HR heads and business executives, discussed the challenges of balancing rising healthcare expenses with meaningful employee support.

They also stressed the importance of embedding wellbeing into leadership culture, noting that executives who model healthy practices foster loyalty and enhance productivity.

‎AXA Mansard Health showcased its wellness platform, which provides employees access to over 2,000 hospitals nationwide, telemedicine consultations, health education programmes, and lifestyle management tools.

By focusing on preventive care and real-time health management, the insurer said it helps organisations reduce costs while improving health outcomes.

‎Reaffirming its commitment to holistic employee wellbeing, the company pledged continued partnership with employers to address the dual challenge of rising healthcare costs and workforce performance.

“MACBAN commends the Kebbi government for the prompt visit to the affected areas and called on the state authority to arrest and prosecute all those involved,” Aliyu-Gotomo advocated.

The secretary decried that the alleged attacks on pastoralists would make livestock and crop production extremely difficult, adding that the harassment of both bandits and other none state actors was constituted serious threat to agric sector.

Aliyu-Gotomo said that the association is concerned that allowing “lawlessness to rein in the rural areas will have an unpleasant consequences on agriculture and livestock production in the country.”

Kwairanga made the call on Tuesday at the Oxford Global Think Tank Leadership Conference held in Abuja, with the theme, “Better Leadership for a Better Nigeria.”
Drawing from over three decades of experience in leading various organisations, Kwairanga, in a statement on Wednesday, noted that leadership in today’s dynamic environment remained complex and demanding.
He said that it must, however, be anchored on key principles such as strategic vision, effective management, and clear communication.
The NGX boss noted that successful leaders must define a clear direction for their organisations, articulate their strategy to stakeholders, and ensure unity of purpose in execution.

“Leaders need to quickly identify the right team to help achieve their goals and steer them in the right direction,” he said.

According to him, the publication is aimed at tarnishing the hard-earned reputation of Imaan Suleiman-Ibrahim.

NAICOM tasks new NCRIB president on innovation, professionalism, trust

    By Taiye Olayemi

The National Insurance Commission (NAICOM) has urged the newly-inaugurated President of the Nigerian Council of Registered Insurance Brokers (NCRIB), Mrs Ekeoma Ezeibe, to lead the industry with innovation, professionalism, inclusion and trust.

The Commissioner for Insurance and Chief Executive Officer of NAICOM, Mr Olusegun Omosehin, gave the charge at the investiture ceremony of Mrs Ezeibe as the 23rd President of the NCRIB, held in Lagos.

Omosehin highlighted three key imperatives that would shape the future of the industry: education, ethics and public confidence.

He urged the new NCRIB president to make them central to her agenda.

“Empower professionals through knowledge; uphold integrity and transparency; and build public confidence through consistent performance and fair practices.

“Perception and performance in insurance are inseparable. Trust grows when our actions meet stakeholders’ expectations,” he said.

Omosehin further advised brokers to evolve with the changing market environment by embracing client-focused advisory services, data-driven claims management and digital innovation.

“Brokers must move beyond product-driven solutions to client-first advisory roles.

“They should expand inclusion through affordable micro-insurance, leverage digital tools to cut costs and maintain high ethical standards,” he said.

The commissioner reiterated NAICOM’s commitment to fostering innovation, protecting policyholders and building public confidence.

He said the Commission would strengthen market conduct oversight to ensure transparency, fairness and value delivery, while also promoting digital transformation in the insurance space.

According to him, this will be through initiatives such as the electronic Know Your Customer (e-KYC), API-enabled placements and efficient claims portals.

Omosehin called for closer collaboration between NAICOM and the NCRIB in developing broker-led micro-insurance and takaful solutions, which, he said, would deepen penetration and financial inclusion.

He described Ezeibe’s emergence as the third female president in the Council’s 63-year history as a testament to her resilience, excellence and professionalism.

He said her leadership marked a new chapter for the Nigerian insurance brokerage profession.

He commended the outgoing President, Prince Babatunde Oguntade, for his visionary leadership and the steady progress made under his tenure, particularly in promoting integrity and professionalism within the brokerage sector.

Also speaking, the outgoing President of the Nigerian Council of Registered Insurance Brokers (NCRIB), Prince Babatunde Oguntade, expressed gratitude to stakeholders in the insurance industry for their support throughout his tenure.

Oguntade commended the National Insurance Commission (NAICOM) for providing the enabling environment that allowed the industry to thrive, as well as for its remarkable efforts in facilitating the signing of the Nigerian Insurance Industry Reform Act (NIIRA) 2025 into law.

Mrs Ezeibe, in her response after the investiture, expressed appreciation for the confidence reposed in her as the new President of the Nigerian Council of Registered Insurance Brokers (NCRIB).

She pledged that the Council would work closely with NAICOM to ensure the full implementation of the newly enacted Nigerian Insurance Industry Reform Act (NIIRA) 2025.

Ezeibe also assured that her administration would prioritise strengthening the NCRIB’s existing partnerships with other industry bodies and relevant organisations to advance the growth and credibility of the insurance sector.

Lagos climate summit to unlock funding for Africa’s ocean sustainability – Commissioner

    By Taiye Olayemi

The Lagos State Government says its 2025 International Climate Change Summit (LICCS) will focus on unlocking sustainable financing and innovation to strengthen Africa’s coastal resilience and blue economy.

The Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Mr Tokunbo Wahab, said this on Thursday at a news conference held in Lagos, ahead of the summit scheduled for Nov. 6 to Nov. 7.

Wahab said the summit, with the theme: “Blue Economy, Green Money: Financing Africa’s Coastal Resilience and Ocean Innovation,” would provide a strategic platform for governments, investors and global development partners to develop actionable solutions to climate-related challenges.

“Lagos, as a coastal megacity, faces increasing threats from flooding, coastal erosion, and rising sea levels, but we are determined to turn those challenges into opportunities for economic growth and environmental sustainability.

“The summit embodies our belief that vulnerability can be transformed into vision, and that Lagos’ coastal challenges can become a source of economic and ecological strength,” he said.

Wahab said the 2025 edition would attract over 1,200 delegates from across Africa and beyond, including global chief executive officers, financiers, researchers, and young innovators, all focused on mobilising resources for Africa’s climate resilience.

According to him, the summit will highlight four key areas: the blue economy, green finance, innovation and youth empowerment, and partnerships.

He said that these are aimed at creating long-term transformation for Lagos and other African coastal cities.

Wahab described the event as an avenue to position Lagos as Africa’s climate leadership hub, ahead of the COP30 global climate conference.

“Our goal is to make Lagos the climate capital of Africa, a city that not only adapts to change but leads it,” he said.

He appreciated the support of partners such as Eko Atlantic, NIMASA, the International Finance Corporation (IFC), the African Development Bank (AfDB), and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), among others.

The commissioner noted the roles of its partners in advancing sustainable development in Lagos.

Wahab called on the media, private sector, and the global community to actively engage in the summit, which, he said, would serve as a launchpad for innovative financing models for Africa’s climate resilience.

“Through this summit, Lagos is sending a clear message: Africa is not waiting to be rescued; we are ready to lead,” he said.

Earlier, the Head of Corporate Communications, Eko Atlantic City, Ms Joanna Fabikun, outlined the city’s contributions to coastal protection and environmental sustainability.

She described the city as a model for resilience against climate-induced erosion in Lagos.

Fabikun, who narrated how the city was reclaimed, said the Eko project was born out of the need to tackle the severe coastal erosion that had threatened Victoria Island and parts of Lagos for decades.

Speaking on the structure of the summit, Mr Michael Bankole, Technical Lead for the summit, noted that the first day would feature different technical sessions and high-level panel discussions with international participation.

Bankole said this was aimed at addressing the economic, environmental, and policy implications of climate change.

“The two-day programme will have stakeholders share insights on climate financing, economic resilience, and sustainable development.

“The discussions will also focus on how to catalyse market-driven climate solutions, strengthen economic systems, and influence policy direction in line with the Federal Government’s climate adaptation agenda,” he said.

Bankole noted that President Bola Tinubu’s administration had shown commitment to addressing climate-related economic issues.

He said that the summit would complement such efforts by generating actionable strategies for implementation at the subnational level.

Also, the Director-General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), Dr Dayo Mobereola, assured the Ministry of the agency’s readiness to partner with it in hosting the event.

Mobereola, who was represented by the Deputy Director of the Deep Blue Project at NIMASA, Mr Tuti Hebron, said the summit would provide opportunities for entrepreneurs to harness the vast potential of the blue economy.

He said that the platform would serve as an eye-opener to the world on what Lagos had to offer in areas such as coastal tourism, fishing, and marine resource development, as well as its potential for wealth creation and job opportunities.(NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

Presidency unveils initiative to empower 200,000 women nationwide

    By Salisu Sani-Idris

The Office of the Vice-President has inaugurated ‘Advancing Sustainable Heritage and Autonomy’ (ASHA), a project aimed at empowering 200,000 women through renewable energy, digital literacy, entrepreneurship, and banking initiatives across Nigeria.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that ASHA is coordinated by the Presidential Committee on Economic and Financial Inclusion (PreCEFI), Government Enterprise and Empowerment Programme (GEEP), and the Pan-African platform, WawuAfrica.

WawuAfrica is a digital platform that empowers women professionals, artisans, and entrepreneurs by providing tools, community, and opportunities to learn, earn, and grow their businesses sustainably across the African continent.

Dr Nurudeen Zauro, Technical Adviser to the President on Economic and Financial Inclusion, inaugurated the ASHA project Thursday at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, marking a significant step towards women’s economic empowerment.

Zauro stated that beneficiaries would be financially and technologically empowered through the pilot phase, helping women take advantage of opportunities within the renewable energy and entrepreneurship sectors nationwide.

He emphasised President Bola Tinubu’s administration’s commitment to improve Nigerian women’s economic status, stressing that empowering women was the most effective way to combat poverty across the nation.

Zauro noted that government alone could not shoulder women’s empowerment, highlighting strong partnerships with private local and international sectors to deepen economic inclusion and deliver sustainable impact.

“President Tinubu stresses government cannot do it alone; partnerships with private sectors are vital. The Aso Accord on Economic and Financial Inclusion reflects this commitment to support vulnerable groups.

“We are focused on reaching vulnerable groups, especially women. Training a woman means training the entire nation, which is why we convened today to ensure effective delivery of the programme,” Zauro added.

Dr Abiodun Essiet, Senior Special Assistant on Community Engagement (North-Central), emphasised the importance of including all women categories, including those with disabilities and various business sizes, to ensure equitable programme reach.

“Empowering women brings hope and happiness to society. Women with different needs and characteristics, small traders to large business owners, must be included, especially those often overlooked,” Essiet said.

She urged inclusive outreach efforts targeting the most vulnerable women who typically lacked support, calling on media to publicise the programme and its inclusivity goals widely.

Alhaji Hamza Baba, National Programme Manager of GEEP, said the ASHA project aligned perfectly with GEEP’s mandate to expand credit and enterprise support for underserved groups, especially women, youth, and persons with disabilities.

“Our mission focuses on building sustainable livelihoods and meaningful national development by supporting underserved individuals.

“We are committed to working hand-in-hand with partners to impact Nigerian women and communities,” Baba affirmed. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)
