SON partners FTAN, LASG to implement standardisation in hotel services

    By Taiye Olayemi

The Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) says it has partnered with the Federation of Tourism Associations of Nigeria (FTAN) and Lagos State Government to implement standardisation in hotel services across the state.

Dr Ifeanyi Chukwunonso-Okeke, Director-General, SON, said this during a standardisation conference organised by the agency for tourism and related services industry, on Friday in Lagos.

The conference has as theme: “Implementing International Best Practices in Hospitality Businesses”.

Chukwunonso-Okeke said that standardisation was important to strengthening quality in tourism businesses in Nigeria.

He said that in line with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, it had become neccesary to redefine the direction to ensure Nigerian tourism businesses are acceptable to all markets, locally and internationally.

“Today, SON is collaborating with private sector umbrella body, FTAN and Lagos state government authorities, to implement existing international and national standards.

“These are: NIS ISO 22483:2021- hotels service requirements and NIS 489:2020- hotels and serviced accommodation management system and rating, requirements and guidance for use.

“These are built into a certification scheme, to carry out certification of hospitality establishments within Nigeria.

“SON certification will ensure international best practices in the different tourism business operations.

“In hospitality establishments, it will steer up the zeal for hospitality businesses to adequately train their staff and ensure consistence in their service delivery,” he said.

Chukwunonso-Okeke noted that SON’s certification would add value to the hospitality establishments.

He said it would also assist them to compete globally, improve reputation, increase confidence of employers and employees as well as earning power.

He said tourism being one of the largest employer of labour in Nigeria and capable of gainfully engaging the youth, could also increase the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

According to him, most countries in Europe and Africa who survive on tourism businesses have come into Nigeria as investors to put in huge funds in building hospitality establishments.

He said most of these nations have gone as far as acquiring leading international brands in the hospitality sector to make their businesses preferred, to that of their competitors.

“It is important to mention that some investors come to Nigeria because they are aware that Nigerian tourism market is open and has less competition in the aspect of quality.

“Nigeria has what any country needs to boost its economy in tourism. We have unique tourist sites, rich culture and population.

“Nigerian tourism experts participate actively in national, regional and international tourism standardisation activities.

“Their contributions in the development of ISO Standards for accommodation, restaurants and adventure tourism, is still appreciated by the international standards community,” he said.

Earlier, Mrs Toke Benson-Awoyinka, Lagos state Commissioner for Tourism, Arts and Culture, underscored the importance of standardisation in the tourism industry.

Benson-Awoyinka, represented by Mrs Oloruntoyin Atekoja, Permanent Secretary of the ministry, said standardisation plays a pivotal role in ensuring quality, consistency and competitiveness within the tourism and hospitality sectors.

Benson-Awoyinka explained that standardisation remains the cornerstone upon which the tourism industry can thrive on a global stage.

“Embracing international best practices not only elevates our offerings but also strengthens our position as a premier destination for travellers seeking unforgettable experiences.

“While we acknowledge the challenges in meeting international standards, we also recognise the immense opportunities that standardisation brings for growth, innovation and sustainable development within our industry.

“Let me reaffirm the unwavering commitment of the Lagos state government in supporting initiatives that promote standardisation and excellence in tourism and hospitality related services.

“It is in line with this standardisation that the ministry is currently digitising its hotel licensing processes and other regulatory activities.

“As we all know that true progress can only be achieved through collaborative efforts.

“I, therefore, encourage all stakeholders, government agencies, industry players, academia, and international bodies to work hand-in-hand toward implementing international best practices and setting new benchmarks of success,” she said.

Also, Mr Nkereuwem Onung, National President of FTAN, said standardisation in the tourism industry was long overdue as he advised tourism practitioners to embrace collaborations. (NAN) (nannews.ng)

    By Taiye Olayemi

Mrs Adaku Chidume-Okoro, Group Managing Director, Gum Arabic Company Nigeria Ltd. (GACON), has commended the Federal Government’s role in sustaining and promoting the non-oil sector through tax exceptions and expansion grants.

Chidume-Okoro said this during the commemoration of the company’s 25th anniversary in Lagos.

She said that the government over the years had deliberately made provision for certain incentives like tax exemptions and giving expansion grants to non-oil exporters.

She said this was highly commendable as she also called on the government to ensure the support was upscaled in the coming years.

“Government knows that it is the non-oil export industry that can sustain the economy. This is the reason for supporting the industry.

“Government has gone out of their way to support non-oil exporters by giving incentives to encourage us so that we can ship more.

“All our export proceed are tax exempt, also there is government expansion grant whereby government pays us certain percentage of our annual turnover as incentives to encourage us to invest more in the sector, the more we export, the more the balance of trade,” she said.

She said the main challenge confronting non-oil exporters had to do with bad roads, which usually results in delayed supply of goods at appropriate places.

Chidume-Okoro emphasised the need for continued government support to enhance the growth and resilience of non-oil sector.

She advised intending exporters to remain focused, consistent and unshaken in the face of challenges if they must record remarkable success as non-oil exporters.

In 2010, Chidume-Okoro was honoured with a Nigerian Presidential Award as “Woman Exporter of the Year 2010” (Non-oil Exports).

Chidume-Okoro said that GACON specialises in the export of various agricultural commodities, herbs and botanicals.

She said the company’s flagship products include fresh ginger and dried split ginger, dried split turmeric, dried hibiscus flower, gum arabic of all grades, hot chili pepper, cassia tora seeds, dried kolanuts and prosopis juliflora. (NAN) (nannews.ng)

According to him, notable events in the year under review included the commissioning of the Phase one of Westlink Iconic Villa, Alakia, Ibadan, comprising 67 residential units of three-bedroom apartments, four-bedroom and five-bedroom duplexes.

He listed the sectors as: real estate, hospitality, financial services, agriculture, energy/power, ICT/ digital, healthcare/pharmaceuticals and logistics/e-commerce.

“It is such focus on ‘’Sweating’’ that necessitated the consolidation of the entire group real estate portfolio under our Wemabod Ltd., subsidiary.

“This led to the massive redevelopment either through own resources or joint venture partnerships of our real estate portfolio to optimise yield and return.

“‘’Revive’’ is manifesting in our renovation and redevelopment of Premier Hotel at Ibadan with significant progress made in both the existing building and new developments on the site with phased re-opening starting in half year of 2025.

“‘’Create’’ reflects in the significant step up in our BITA Exploration and Production Ltd., marginal field (PPL 249) funding thrust to implement the Field Development Plan with our partner, Pioneer Global Energy Resources.

“The company expects that once these funding and regulatory requirements are met, it will be able to achieve ‘’First Oil’’ within the first quarter of 2025.

“All these translated to remarkable success in its financial performance, corporate governance, risk management, and asset optimisation across its chosen sectors,” he said.

Raji expressed confidence that the incoming group managing director of the company, Mr Abdulrahman Yinusa, would deliver on the ongoing redevelopment of the company’s hotels and the group’s new pipeline of premium residential and commercial projects.

He assured that the new managing director would also secure viable joint venture partnerships for the agriculture portfolio and achieve ‘’First Oil‘’, in the implementation of the field development plan of BITA marginal field.

According to him, Yinusa would facilitate the company’s mainstream participation in the turnaround of the power sector.

Raji expressed optimism that President Bola Tinubu administration’s pursuit of a market-driven approach to resolving underlying problems of the economy would attract long-term investments into the country to fund infrastructure and social services.

He said that these include roads, rail, power, healthcare, and education, among others, that would translate into sustainable economic and human capital development.

Prof. Olanike Adeyemo, Secretary to Oyo State Government, comemended the board of OICL for piloting the affair of the organisation to an enviable height.

Climate change: Stop felling trees, killing wildlife species – Don

    By Taiye Olayemi

Prof. Edem Eniang, Executive Director of the Biodiversity Preservation Centre in Uyo, has expressed disappointment at continued engagement of some Nigerians in tree felling and wildlife killing for commercial purposes.

Eniang told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos on Tuesday that in spite of warnings, some Nigerians had continued in the acts, making the effects of climate change to be worse.

According to him, trees serve as physical barriers capable of reducing wind speed and redirecting its force, thereby helping to prevent soil erosion, which can damage crops and destroy wildlife habitats.

He added that trees could reduce the likelihood of damage to buildings and other structures by strong winds.

He said that wildlife species being killed were capable of attracting eco-tourism traffic to the nation and aid in generating foreign exchange earnings.

He advised Nigerians to refrain from the acts and rather engage in tree planting and general biodiversity conservation.

“In Nigeria, the challenge of endangered species conservation has become a matter of urgent concern requiring positive actions from governments at all levels and all individuals.

“We must all work together to address this situation for a better future, balanced ecosystem, and to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals in our country by 2050.

“We have disregarded, disrupted and altered the planetary boundaries within our spheres of influence, allowing our daily activities as humans to have a negative impact on the environment or ecosystems.

“Acid rain is now a reality; our water is acidified, and if we do not take action, 2025 will bring even worse consequences with increased temperatures and more severe wind disasters.

“Currently, the only opportunity we have to view our wildlife species is presented by those sold at the bushmeat markets, whereas those are the same species that could have drawn eco-tourism traffic and bring in the much-needed foreign exchange.

“Unfortunately, they are, on daily basis, displayed at wildlife markets or at pepper soup joints, where they are being sold indiscriminately.

“We are cooking crocodiles, antelopes, gorillas, chimpanzees, dolphins, African manatees and more. This is unacceptable,” he said.

Eniang said that, to safeguard Nigeria’s endangered wildlife species, the Federal Government should consistently educate Nigerians about the dangers of killing them.

He said that due to reckless killing of some wildlife species, animals such as Forest elephants, Atlantic humpback dolphins, African manatees, red-capped mangabeys, colobine monkeys and pangolins were on the verge of extinction.

“Species such as the Ukpam stingray, snakefish, two-headed snake (Calabar ground python), Angwantibo, Nigerian-Cameroonian chimpanzee, Cross River gorilla and the Slater’s monkey, declared in 2000 as the 15th most important monkey on the planet, are all on the brink of extinction.

“Cheetahs, Giraffs and hunting dogs have disappeared from Nigeria.

“Since the removal of fuel subsidy by the Federal Government, many Nigerians cannot afford the cost of PMS, diesel and kerosine; so, they have embraced firewood to cook.

“This development has increased the rate at which trees are brought down and converted to charcoal. Nigerians must desist from it,” he said.

Eniang urged Nigerians to make conscious efforts in the preservation of Nigeria’s fauna and flora endowments for wealth creation and environmental preservation. (NAN) (nannews.ng)

Envoy canvasses creation of visa free policy for Africans to boost tourism

    By Taiye Olayemi

The Rwandan Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr Christophe Bazivamo, has called on African leaders to unanimously create a visa free policy to guarantee seamless travels and boost tourism within the region.
Bazivamo made the call during the 48th Annual General Meeting of the National Association of Nigerian Travel Agencies (NANTA), held on Thursday in Lagos.
According to him, Rwanda has implemented a visa free policy and has been able to boost its economy through this.
He said due to the nation’s visa free tourism policy, Rwanda’s MICE industry (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibitions) recorded a significant growth of 48 per cent in two years, from 2022 to 2023.
“Africa is full of breathtaking natural tourism sites but in spite of such vast assets, the economy is not as vibrant as it should be.
“We need a visa free Africa to facilitate investment, trade and tourism within the region
“In Rwanda, our visa free tourism policy has boosted our economy. As Africans, we should not be bothered about security issues, we have the population and the resources to unlock our economic potential.
“MICE industry in Rwanda has risen by 48 per cent in the last 2 years due to our visa free tourism policy. This can be replicated across the region,” he said.
Also, Mr Ikechi Uko, a tourism development expert, said it was high time Africans took advantage of their huge population to grow their economy by opening the borders within the region.
According to Uko, trade will be impossible without travels and the major factor to facilitate seamless travels is to have open skies across Africa.
Mr Nkereuwem Onung, National President of the Federation of Tourism Associations of Nigeria (FTAN), said: “By promoting travel within the continent, we pave the way for deeper cultural exchanges, stronger business collaborations, and increased investment flows.
“Let us envision a future where Nigeria can work hand in hand with other countries to create a seamless and interconnected travel experience.
“The potential benefits are immense. Increased tourism will not only lead to job creation and economic growth but will also foster a sense of unity and understanding among us as a nation.
“It is through travel and tourism that we can truly appreciate and celebrate our common heritage.” (NAN) (nannews.ng)

World Copyright Day: Commission holds reading challenge in honour of Wole Soyinka

    By Taiye Olayemi

The Nigerian Copyright Commission on Monday in Lagos held a book reading challenge in honour of Nobel Laureate, Wole Soyinka, ahead of the World Book and Copyright Day, celebrated annually on April 23.

The programme, tagged, “Wole Soyinka Reading Challenge”, had 90 students from five schools read Soyinka’s books, recite and present some of his poems to encourage reading culture among students.

The schools include Bisney College, Idimu; First Zion High School, Ijegun; Light of Little Saints School, Idimu; Christ Dominion Imperial School and Idimu Junior High School.

The programme was organised in collaboration with the Centre for Research, Information Management and Media Development (CRIMMD).

Earlier, Mrs Lynda Alphaeus, Director, Nigerian Copyright Commission, Lagos office, said the theme for the 2024 World Book and Copyright Day is “Read Your Way”.

Alphaeus said in commemoration of the Day, the commission had deliberately dedicated the programme to honour Soyinka as he prepares for his 90th birthday on July 13.

She encouraged the students to cultivate the habit of reading and emulate the good virtues Soyinka represents.

She described reading as the easiest access to knowledge as she decried the role social media and the new media had played in discouraging reading among schoolchildren.

She also advised them against using people’s intellectual works without giving them credit or seeking permission.

“We want you all to go back to reading, to impact the world, also, learn to respect copyright,” she said.

Educating the students on who Soyinka is, Dr Raphael James, CRIMMD Curator, described Soyinka as an overtly talented and compulsive writer.

James said Soyinka’s significance cut across local and international reach with over 1,000 awards received across the globe.

“Many do not know Soyinka to be a hunter, a musician, a palm wine lover and a lover of Nigerian culture.”

He urged the students to aspire to be great and even greater than Soyinka, to continually make Nigeria a great nation.

James said CRIMMD was established as a free public library in 2004 to encourage young ones to gain access to books on Nigerian history.

Also advising the students on hardwork, Mr Bayo Fadairo, President, Lagos Philatelic Club, said: “There is dignity in labour, Wole Soyinka started like all of you, he took it to the high level with great commitment to his academics and that fetched him lots of awards.

“Please, develop lots of passion and love for this country. Like Soyinka, take off your minds away from travelling abroad, seeking better means of livelihood but focus on developing yourselves.”

On his part, Mr David Obaro, popularly known as “World Wrapper Man”, advised the students to always believe in their abilities and work on laying good legacies like Soyinka had done.

Victoria Shomorin, a student of Mass Communication at the Lagos State University (LASU), gave a demonstative presentation of Soyinka’s “Abiku”.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the programme featured an exhibition of Soyinka’s plays, novels and portraits while his music was also aired.

Some other dignitaries also paid tribute to the playwright and his contributions to the development of arts. (NAN) (nannews.ng)
