    Nigeria to host lighting expo on low-carbon technology

    The Nigeria International Lighting Expo (NILE) 2025 will showcase low-carbon technology in Lagos from Sept. 17 to Sept. 19.

    The Expo is organised by Zhongsheng International Business (Zhongshan) Co. Ltd.

    At a news conference on Saturday, Ms Lisa Lin, General Manager of Zhongshan Company Ltd., said the event would hold at the Landmark Centre, Lagos.

    She said the Expo would explore the theme ‘Zero-Carbon Lighting: Supporting Nigeria’s Energy Transition Goals’, which aligns with the nation’s energy transformation agenda.

    Lin noted that the exhibition would provide a platform to showcase low-carbon and smart lighting technologies, while boosting Nigeria’s lighting industry and enhancing global influence.

    She disclosed that the exhibition would attract nearly 100 top exhibitors, including C-TORCH, AKT, VELLMAX, OKELI, BLUE CARBON, SHINNINGSTAR and VANGE SOLAR.

    According to her, the Expo will cover 3,000 square metres and host over 5,000 professional visitors and buyers from Nigeria and neighbouring countries.

    “The Expo will feature commercial, decorative and outdoor landscape lighting, alongside products for industrial use, stage entertainment, transport, medical applications and vehicle lighting.

    “It will also showcase solar-powered lighting, LED innovations, intelligent display systems, advanced manufacturing materials and precision testing equipment,” she added.

    Lin stressed that the Expo would drive regional industrial collaboration and position Nigeria as a gateway to the African market.

    Also speaking, Mr Emmanuel Akintubosun, Senior Special Assistant to the Lagos State Governor on Energy, reaffirmed government’s commitment to energy transition.

    He said this had been demonstrated through solar street lights, energy-efficient public lighting and integration of smart technology.

    Akintubosun urged collaboration with international manufacturers and technology providers to foster innovation and create opportunities for Nigeria’s energy sector.

    On his part, Mr Xu Fan, Director of Commercial and Trade Affairs at the Chinese Consulate in Lagos, said the Expo would enhance Nigeria-China trade relations.

    He noted that demand for high-quality, energy-efficient and environmentally friendly lighting products in Nigeria was growing as consumers increasingly embraced smart and sustainable solutions.

    Xu added that China was ready to strengthen partnerships with Nigeria through zero-tariff treatment and deepen bilateral ties under the China-Nigeria strategic partnership framework.

    “China is willing to sign an economic partnership agreement with Nigeria, implementing zero-tariff treatment for all tariff lines.

    “Through concrete actions, we aim to deepen the China-Nigeria strategic partnership and build a high-level community with a shared future,” Xu said. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

    Excitement builds at Issa junior tennis championship in Lagos

    The sixth Alhaji Adewale Issa Foundation Junior Tennis Championship has reached its fourth day, featuring thrilling contests in the U-12, U-14 and U-16 categories.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the competition is being held at the National Stadium, Lagos.

    The tournament, which began on Monday, has witnessed outstanding performances from young players representing different parts of Nigeria.

    The championship covers three age groups, U-12, U-14 and U-16, with both boys and girls competing for honours.

    NAN reports that Precious Ohima defeated Destiny Dahzosou 4-1, 4-0 in the U-16 girls’ quarter-final, while Bisola Ogunkolade beat Mariam Ogunbanwo 4-0, 4-0.

    Oyinkansola Adejumobi outclassed Sarah Achibong 4-1, 4-0 to reach the U-14 girls’ semi-final, while Tiffany Oshi overcame Whitney Orimoloye 4-1, 5-3 to also progress.

    Success Godwin cruised past Benjamin Alaere 4-0, 4-0 in the U-14 girls’ category to secure a semi-final place.

    In the U-14 boys’ matches, Goodluck Akinfunmiloye trounced Jerry Goodluck 4-0, 4-0, while Peter Ubiebi overcame Daniel Igbinovia 4-2, 4-0 to advance.

    Marvelous Bolarinwa edged John Ilerioluwa 4-1, 5-3 in the U-16 boys’ quarter-final, while David Edwards beat Toheeb Oseni 5-3, 4-1 to qualify.

    Players are displaying skill, resilience and fair play, producing an electrifying atmosphere throughout the matches.

    The Adewale Issa Foundation has continued to encourage tennis development in Nigeria through this annual championship.

    The event provides a platform for young talents to gain valuable exposure, experience and competition.

    Players across the age categories expressed delight at participating, describing the tournament as a strong platform for grassroots tennis development.

    They said they looked forward to enjoying one of the best experiences of their young sporting careers.

    The championship concludes on Saturday, with winners in each category expected to receive prizes and recognition.

    Inspenonline launches insurance industry think-tank

    An insurance platform, Inspenonline, has launched a research-based initiative aimed at harnessing knowledge and maximising opportunities in the Nigerian insurance industry.

    The initiative falls under the Nigerian Insurance Industry Reform Act (NIIRA) 2025 and the ongoing recapitalisation of the sector.

    Publisher of Inspenonline, an insurance and pension research-based news platform, Mr Chuks Okonta, disclosed this in a statement on Thursday in Lagos.

    Okonta said the initiative, tagged ‘Insurance Industry Think-tank on NIIRA and Recapitalisation,’ would generate robust data to support the growth of the insurance sector.

    According to him, contributions will be sourced from chief executives of insurance firms, shareholders and policyholders, and published daily on a designated “Think-tank” page.

    He added that a communiqué would also be developed from the submissions and shared with stakeholders for broader industry engagement.

    Okonta said inputs would be collected through interviews and questionnaires, while the findings would be disseminated across print and visual media platforms.

    He urged stakeholders to support the initiative, which he described as a vehicle for knowledge exchange and the development of a strong knowledge bank for the industry.

    The publisher stressed that research-driven initiatives remained vital for advancing the sector.

    APWEN tasks senior engineers on continuous mentorship

    Association of Professional Women Engineers of Nigeria (APWEN), Lagos Chapter, has urged senior and retired engineers to mentor younger professionals to sustain excellence and inspire resilience in engineering.

    Its Chairman, Dr Atinuke Wuraola Owolabi, made the appeal on Wednesday at the association’s 2025 Annual General Meeting, Awards and Election, held at the APWEN Lagos Resource and Innovation Hub, University of Lagos.

    “Mentorship is at the heart of our progress.

    “We encourage our senior and retired members to stay actively engaged with younger professionals because their wealth of experience is invaluable to building confidence and resilience in the next generation,” Owolabi said.

    She noted that APWEN Lagos had impacted hundreds of young female engineers through its mentorship and capacity-building programmes, including the SheEngineers Consultancy Apprenticeship Programme (SECAP).

    According to her, SECAP has empowered 200 young female engineers and reached more than 1,500 girls through STEM education.

    Owolabi highlighted that the newly inaugurated APWEN Lagos Innovation and Resource Hub at UNILAG was one of the chapter’s achievements, serving as a platform for collaboration, mentoring, and knowledge sharing between senior and younger engineers.

    “As part of bridging the classroom and real-world experience, we organised site visits to Schneider Electric, Greenpeg Engineering, Microsoft Africa Transformation Office, and other leading organisations. We guided career paths, created apprenticeship opportunities, and expanded our student chapters across UNILAG, YABATECH, and LASU,” she said.

    The outgoing chairman also listed other milestones, including training members in AutoCAD and digital manufacturing, cybersecurity workshops, and the SHEnovation Hackathon, which attracted over 100 submissions.

    She added that the chapter’s membership base had grown by more than 120 new members, with stronger student-to-professional transitions to ensure sustainability.

    Owolabi, who handed over to new executives at the AGM, expressed confidence that the chapter’s initiatives would continue to expand opportunities for young female engineers while promoting innovation and leadership in the industry.

    Moppet Foods, Nigeria’s natural baby food brand, has announced a significant expansion of its global reach by launching on Amazon for the United Kingdom and European markets.

    Founder of Moppet Foods, Ms Roberta Oyedokun, disclosed this in a statement on Tuesday in Lagos.

    According to her. the launch comes just a month after Frills by Berta, the makers of Moppet, made history as the first Nigerian children’s food brand to sell its products on Walmart USA.

    Oyedokun noted that European families could now purchase Moppet Foods’ products with the convenience and reliability of the Amazon platform.

    She described the expansion as a pivotal moment for Moppet, affirming the company’s commitment to making wholesome, naturally sourced nutrition accessible to a broader global audience.

    She said: “We’re thrilled to partner with Amazon to bring our mission of healthy eating to European homes.

    “This launch is a testament to the universal appeal of our products and our dedication to providing parents with a healthy, convenient choice for their little ones.

    Dysphagia is the medical term for difficulty swallowing. It can occur when there’s a problem in the mouth, throat, or esophagus (the tube connecting the throat to the stomach).

    According to Oyedokun, Moppet will also be partnering with key health institutions in the United Kingdom to ensure the nutritional needs of both the adults and children are met.

    WAICA conference to focus on insurers’ climate Role

    The Nigerian Insurers Association (NIA) says the 2025 Education Conference of the West African Insurance Companies Association (WAICA) will highlight insurers’ role in tackling climate change.

    NIA is organising the programme on behalf of Nigeria’s insurance market.

    Mrs Ebelechukwu Nwachukwu, Chairperson of the Local Organising Committee, in a statement on Tuesday, said the conference would promote regional cooperation.

    She said the conference, scheduled for Oct. 12 to Oct. 15 at Eko Hotels, Lagos, would equip insurers with tools to manage the evolving climate landscape.

    Nwachukwu added that the meeting will address climate-resilient insurance models, regulatory frameworks, digital claims processing innovations, green underwriting, regional collaboration, and public-private partnerships.

    She noted other issues include premium discounts for low-carbon assets and government-backed reinsurance pools to strengthen the industry’s response to climate risks.

    The conference will also discuss insurers’ role in safeguarding communities and economies, while aligning with international climate commitments, including the Paris Agreement.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the meeting will bring together delegates from Nigeria, Ghana, Gambia, Sierra Leone, Liberia, and other West African countries.

    NAN also reports that the theme of the conference is ‘The West African Insurer in the Face of Climate Change.’

    According to Nwachukwu, delegates will gain insights into best practices from Anglophone West Africa and engage with leaders shaping climate-aware insurance in the region.

    “Confirmed speakers include Mr Olusegun Ayo Omosehin, Commissioner for Insurance and Chief Executive Officer of the National Insurance Commission (NAICOM), who will deliver the keynote address.

    “Also expected are Mr Bockarie Kaloko, Sierra Leone’s Deputy Minister of Finance; Mr Wole Oshin, Group Managing Director, Custodian Investment Plc; and Dr Abiba Zakariah, Ghana’s Acting Commissioner of Insurance.

    “Other participants include regulators, government officials, industry professionals, and development agencies,” she said.

    The Association of Professional Women Engineers of Nigeria (APWEN), Lagos Chapter, on Friday organised a free STEM holiday camp for girls in Makoko community.

    The initiative, held in honour of Dr Felicia Agubata, a past president of the association, aimed to inspire girls’ interest in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).

    Speaking at the event, APWEN Lagos Chairman, Dr Atinuke Owolabi, said the camp was designed to nurture curiosity and encourage early engagement with STEM subjects among young girls.

    She explained that the camp also marked World Humanitarian Day, serving as a platform for APWEN to give back by empowering future female innovators and problem solvers.

    “The focus is on girls aged six to twelve, a crucial stage where curiosity is high and proper guidance can ignite a lifelong passion,” Owolabi said.

    Through fun experiments, STEM games, drawing and quiz competitions, the holiday camp sought to build enthusiasm and endear the participants to science and engineering.

    Owolabi stressed that science and technology were vital tools for nation-building and reaffirmed the association’s commitment to ensuring no girl was excluded from STEM education.

    She urged government, the private sector, community leaders and families to collaborate in supporting girl-child education and empowerment, stressing the need for collective responsibility.

    Owolabi also commended APWEN partners, volunteers and the STEM Committee for their efforts, encouraging the girls to remain bold, curious and confident in pursuing their dreams.

    In her remarks, Dr Agubata encouraged the girls to stay determined in their studies, noting that her rural upbringing in Anambra never hindered her growth.

    She said that rural life should not be seen as a barrier and emphasised that faith in God and commitment to learning could unlock success.

    According to her, education enabled her to travel the world and achieve financial independence, proving that discipline and perseverance remain vital tools for advancement.

    Agubata urged the girls to cultivate obedience, honesty, respect and strong character, while prioritising education as the gateway to exceeding their expectations and achieving greatness.

    She further described STEM as a driver of economic growth and advised the participants not to allow environmental circumstances to limit their ambitions.

    In a remarkable gesture, Agubata awarded a scholarship to Miss Adijat Ajeigbe, an out-of-school girl, covering her education from primary to university level.

    Ajeigbe, recently bereaved and with a deaf and dumb mother, said the scholarship rekindled her hope and renewed her determination to pursue her dreams.

    Mrs Gbemisola Lanre-Shobona guided the children through basic engineering concepts, demonstrating a volcano eruption experiment using vinegar and baking soda, alongside lessons in electronics and magnetism.

    The event also featured career talks, STEM games, fun experiments, drawing contests, scholarships for disadvantaged girls, and other activities designed to spark interest in engineering.

    Commending the initiative, Chief Akeem Adeshina, Baale of Makoko, praised APWEN for bringing the camp to the community and pledged support in guiding children towards engineering.

    He described the Makoko people as transparent and peaceful, while welcoming continued collaboration with APWEN for the empowerment of the community’s younger generation. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

    National Insurance Commission (NAICOM) has launched a newly redesigned website, aimed at improving user experience, transparency, and efficiency.

    The commission disclosed this in a statement in Lagos on Wednesday.

    It said, “The revamped website is designed to provide easy access to information on insurance regulations, policies, and industry developments.

    “Key features include: Improved Navigation, Insurance Industry Insights, publications and resources as well as contact information.

    “This contains user-friendly interface for easy access to relevant information, updates on industry trends, regulatory developments, and best practices

    “Individuals can gain access to NAICOM publications, reports, and guidelines. Also, there is easy access to NAICOM officials’ contact details for inquiries and feedback.”

    According to the commission, the launch of the redesigned website aligned with its commitment to leveraging technology to enhance service delivery, transparency, and accountability in the insurance industry.

    It note that the initiative is part of the broader effort to digitise government services and promote good governance in Nigeria.

    Commenting, Commissioner of Insurance, Mr Olusegun Omosehin said, “We are excited to unveil our new website, which will serve as a valuable resource for the insurance industry, stakeholders, and the general public.
